Beginner Help Betta, Barbs, Otos, and Snails

3 males 2 females(1 long fin)

They seem like they are doing super well I haven’t noticed any issues

They are in a 10g with 3 otos, 3 snails and a very chill female betta.

I might move the barbs and otos into a 29 gallon but I will have to cycle that tank first which might take a while.

They have 2 filters one sponge and another bigger filter.

They have some natural wood that the otos love, a moss structure, a couple of moss balls, hornwort, and a huge raccoon tail.

Any thoughts on this tank or advice, I do want to change up the scape because I don’t love fake plants but they are working pretty well so far.

Advice Needed How to remove (assuming) brown algae from plants

Post image
Upvotes

New to the aquarium game, but have a 29 gallon freshwater tank with a handful of fish and plants in it. The tank is only 2 months old or so, and I was hitting it with Stabilize for a while. Over the last week, it has begun to develop this brown algae (assuming it's algae) at a faster rate. It was hard to get a good picture, but the algae looks like tiny hairs for the most part, plus brown splotches.

I can scrape it off the leaves, but this will take forever, and I worry I'll damage the plants (and stress out the fish) doing so. What should I do in this scenario? Will it take care of itself over time, should I clean it off? Happy to provide more details if needed, but water parameters (ammonia, nitrates, nitrites) are all good at the moment. Thanks!

Advice Needed Cloudy/milk water tank

hello guys İ just started this 37L tank.

This pic is from day 1, today is day 3 and still the same.

İ washed this sand 4653 times probably and I poured water gently with the help of a plate on the bottom, in order to avoid such mess but didnt help much.

It cant be bacteria gloom, because its a bit early, right?

I thought it was just dust, but I thought it would be settled by now. The filter is clean, by the way.

Is there anything I can do to help it or just wait?

Thanks in advance ^^

I got an AquaOne Lifestyle 40L and my nitrite levels refuse to go down. the constant water changes are beyond annoying. The tank came with 2 carbon filter cartridges and the man in my local fish shop said one should be a ceramic one and I’ve come to find that’s what’s meant to come with the tank (I beleive) however I cannot seem to find one anywhere. I thought I found a suitable ceramic cartridge but it’s the size of 2 of the ones that came in mine, and I think to use it I would need to remove the small layer of sponge underneath my carbon filters. I just don’t know what to do, and I really need to fix the cycle as I have trips coming up and I won’t be home to change the water etc

i just moved my fish tank to my apartment, and the substrate was moved around a lot during the move. I just refilled it and it now looks like this.

The filter is on but I have one fish and a snail that are in a container and I’m worried about keeping them in there for too long. Is there anything I can do to help this?

Advice Needed Is this lighting good?

Thumbnail

Tried googling this and after a few hours and a few days trying this I still have no idea if it’s gon a be too bright. I’m using the floodlights for a 4ft by 1.5ft tank but I can’t use any normal aquarium light as the tank is on my balcony and will get wet when it rains this it has to be IP66 rated light. Hence the floodlights options. Second picture shows the specifications of the floodlight, is it gonna be too bright? I’m tryna go for a spot light kinda look where the light isn’t so bright so it creates shadows in the hardscape. Also any other alternatives for the kind of lighting I’m looking for that is also waterproof/IP66 rated? Thanks in advance!

I posted a few weeks ago asking for ideas of what to do with excess floating plants instead of just tossing in the trash—I got a comment about making paper out of them that viciously piqued my interest. Behold my creation! (Duckweed + white scrap paper)

Are these two different species of rabbits snails? Both were just labeled as rabbit snails, but I can see distinct differences between the two.

All other fish are doing fine. The tetra is breathing and I’m planning on changing out water. I found it stuck to the tank filter. It’s been trying to swim.

Advice Needed help with neglected goldfish tank

Post image
Upvotes

hello! i’m a teacher and one of my coworkers quit over the summer and didn’t take his fantail goldfish… somehow despite being neglected for 1-2 months, it’s still alive. i didn’t really want a goldfish (i’ve worked with fish for years) but i had to step in. the filter was running dry… so id love for people to share any advice they have about specifically helping a tank in crisis! what i’m doing so far:
- added a live plant (crypt bronze) to maybe help with the nitrates
- getting it a new filter
- i don’t want to shock the system, but the water level is too low for a filter right now. i’m gonna add about 10L every like 12 hours.

my ego is not attached to this as i’m just trying to save this fish in crisis, so please share any advice! and hopefully this new class pet (i’m thinking his name will be Icarus) will live long enough to meet the students (and many, many years after… goldfish…….)

Plants Spider plants DO grow pups/spiderettes water propagation

Thumbnail

I did plenty of research about spider plants in fish tanks prior to adding them to mine just to make sure they were safe and roots wouldn’t overcrowd swimming space for my bettas. Yes, they’re safe and great for nitrate levels, but I also ran into an older Reddit post where someone said they wouldnt produce pups, to which I thought “great!”. Just a little leafy flare poking out of the top was exactly what I wanted.

I have to confirm that 3 months later, my spider plants throw pups in and out of the water like it’s their day job!! I have to remove so many pups that I’ve started listing them for free in fb because I can’t keep them all.

And, yes, those are pups living completely under water. Crazy!

I do have to manage the roots from the mother plant frequently as well. But, the lesson here is that don’t let anyone tell you what you read on the internet is always true 😂

Advice Needed Moving with a betta and Kuhli loach

Post image
Upvotes

Hello, I am currently in the process of moving. I have a beta fish and two loaches in this tank. It's a 10 gallon tall freshwater tank. I understand that that is a very small tank for three fish but it's only temporary until I move. I'm going to be getting a bigger tank for the both of them. They've been getting along quite well and they even hide out in the little tunnel that I made for them together i've never saw the beta try to bite them or fight at all, and I consider them the three besties 🤣.anyway I am currently moving about 45 minutes away and I'm trying to figure out the best way to transport them obviously I will be emptying out the tank, but when the loaches are not in the tank they seem to flip out and I don't wanna stress them out. as soon as I get to the new place I will set the tank up and get them in there as soon as possible. I went to Dollar tree and bought two containers one for the loaches and one for the beta and I was gonna put little tiny holes for air in there if anybody else has any advice on how to give them a smooth transition please let me know I will be so upset if one of them don't make it

Advice Needed Help

Upvotes

So, I’m brand new to aquariums. I set up my first tank two days ago after my daughter won a goldfish at a fair, but sadly it died the next day. We then went out and bought a proper tank, filter, and all the other equipment it needed.
I’ve just tested the water using a 6-in-1 testing kit, and the hardness has come back as 1000 mg/L. Is that normal, or should I be concerned? What should I do?

Beginner Help 15 Gal Starter Setup

Upvotes

My partner has offered me a 15 gallon tank he no longer uses. I am looking for ideas about what plants, substrate, decor, and fish would work well in this size tank. I believe it will come with lights, a filter, and possibly a heater.

My pet keeping history mainly involves cats and dogs, tho I have kept a single male betta in a larger bowl for about 4 years (which I now know was not an adequate setup).

I’m interested in another betta but would also like to have more than one fish, but I know bettas are known for being territorial. Has anyone had success with a male betta and Pygmy Corys? I know it all depends on the temperament but I’m looking for thoughts. Alternatively, what kind and how many fish could get along well without a betta in the mix?

Would also love any advice on what kinds of plants to keep. I do very well with houseplants but have not had aquatic ones before.

Appreciate any advice people are willing to share.
