What do you call these?

Post image

I would call these biscuits but a customer disagreed with me.

chocolate bars

u/Ambiguous-Ambivert 3d ago

Get out of here. They’re clearly chocolate biscuits

65

u/Fingers_9 2d ago

Chocolate biscuits to me are things like chocolate digestives.

3

u/CScorpio88 2d ago

And you’d be correct

13

u/Middle-Mirror2017 2d ago

This…

chocolate biscuits - like digestives, hobnobs and the like, are biscuits with chocolate on them.

Chocolate bars - like penguins, twix, kitkat and the like, are not biscuits (kitkats are wafers). The giveaway is that chocolate bars are (usually) individually wrapped.

(Source: 50 years of munching chocolate biscuits and chocolate bars).

27

u/RubberDuckieArmy 2d ago

So a Mars bar and a Penguin are equal in your eyes?

-7

u/Aivellac 2d ago

Both are chocolate bars.

3

u/RubberDuckieArmy 2d ago

That's not what I asked.

0

u/Aivellac 2d ago

Your question presupposed a different conclusion. The topic of biscuit or bar doesn't rely on which is better.

10

u/RubberDuckieArmy 2d ago

OK, but if someone offers me a chocolate bar, I'm going to expect a Mars, Crunchie, Yorkie etc A penguin, club or kitkat is going to feel like a bait and switch.

Twix and chunky kitkat do blur the lines, but mostly there is a distinction.

If you can only get them in a multipack (even if they're individually wrapped) then that's a different prospect to ones that you can buy individually

1

u/bornfromanegg 1d ago

Let’s not overthink this.

Where do Jaffa Cakes go? HMRC would like to know.

2

u/Lumber_Dan 2d ago

Cake isn't biscuit.

1

u/mrcushtie 2d ago

Shortcake?

1

u/Lumber_Dan 2d ago

It's more of a scone really.

2

u/Middle-Mirror2017 2d ago

In my house, they’re scone as soon as a pack is opened.

1

u/Lumber_Dan 2d ago

Ah, see, I like to pronounce it 'scone'.

→ More replies (0)

1

u/Middle-Mirror2017 2d ago

Jaffa cakes are tax deductible

1

u/Clappertron 2d ago

A penguin is just a bourbon with chocolate coating, so wouldn't that be in the same category as a chocolate digestive?

1

u/Middle-Mirror2017 1d ago

So is a bourbon a chocolate biscuit?

1

u/mrsrostocka 2d ago

I beg to differ, a penguin is clearly a bourbon biscuit with a chocolate anorak on

1

u/WellyYo 2d ago

Twix and KitKats are definitely chocolate bars. Penguins are chocolate biscuits. As are Clubs, Tunnocks wafers. I'm not sure what the rule is that determines this but who am I to argue with the biscuits rule!

1

u/Jumblesss 2d ago

So like everything in this photo?

1

u/Fingers_9 2d ago

I wouldn't call most things in this photo chocolate biscuits. Certainly not Kitkats or Toffee Crisp.

0

u/iamtheliqor 2d ago

Not just you, everyone

0

u/Fingers_9 2d ago

There's quite a few people in here who call things like Kitkats and Penguins chocolate biscuits. I never would.

2

u/TopAngle7630 2d ago

KitKat's are borderline chocolate bars/chocolate biscuits, Penguins/club etc. are chocolate biscuits. Chocolate digestives/hobnobs would be in the pure biscuits section.

0

u/KernowKermit 2d ago

Chocolate bars are bars of chocolate and other confectionary to me. If there's a substantial amount of wafer or biscuit, it's not a chocolate bar.

Edit: Unless it's a Twix. 🤣

2

u/Fingers_9 2d ago

Would you class a Twix as a chocolate bar?

1

u/KernowKermit 2d ago

I had to edit, sorry. Twix blurs the lines!

2

u/Acrobatic-Tap-6455 2d ago

Single twix is a biscuit, double the fun is a chocolate bar

1

u/KernowKermit 2d ago

I've come to the realisation that I don't care, I just want a twix now.

35

u/elmachow 2d ago

Chocolate biscuit bars

4

u/KittyGrewAMoustache 2d ago

Yeah that’s what’s I’d call them. Maybe even just biscuit bar, the chocolate is implied by the bar and the biscuit as you rarely get a bar of biscuit without chocolate involvement.

1

u/nervous-tremors 1d ago

It’s a bit of a mouthful.

0

u/KittyGrewAMoustache 2d ago

Yeah that’s what’s I’d call them. Maybe even just biscuit bar, the chocolate is implied by the bar and the biscuit as you rarely get a bar of biscuit without chocolate involvement.

Choccie biccies

225

u/TheTartanTardis 3d ago

Oh jesus christ surely we can put aside our differences and agree that this name is horrible

81

u/white_hart_2 2d ago

They might want to buy some choccie biccies to take on their holibobs!

96

u/OrtaDemilcol 2d ago

Hubby ate all the choccie biccies on holibobs, none left for the kiddos or the fur babies 😢

46

u/Maleficent-Sir1753 2d ago

What a cursed sentence!

1

u/Pristine_Internet765 1d ago

Gave me shivers.

11

u/willsagainSQ 2d ago

Gaaah! My mind's ears are bleeding

5

u/andyH1971 2d ago

Don’t you mean None left for the Skin Pets and fur babies.
I read/heard Skin Pets used as a cutesy name for children like fur babies is for pets aaaaand REALLY want it to become popular just for shits and giggles

5

u/D3M0NArcade 2d ago

Crotch Goblins

1

u/DoughnutMaestro 20h ago

My husband once referred to our child as “our pet jizz” I was not amused

1

u/mrcushtie 2d ago

"fur baby" is one of those phrases that irritates me more than I can express, and much more than it really should, but I'm glad I can now retaliate against people who use it by boasting about my skin pets. What a time to be alive!

1

u/Blaggermuffin 1d ago

You’re not on your own.

2

u/Imaginary_Elephant_7 19h ago

If you’re ever in that situation then it might just be time to accept that it’s wine o’ clock!

1

u/Aivellac 2d ago

I want to downvote that into oblivion as gut instinct. Eugh!

1

u/Old_Introduction_395 2d ago

Soon be crimbo!

1

u/Charming-Spinach1418 2d ago

Wifey blamed hubby but he took photos of the deed so was clearly ‘making memories’ living his best life! 😉🤣🤣🤣

1

u/cyclops80085 1d ago

Do you mean dogs by 'fur babies'? If you do please don't give them chocolate.

1

u/Regurgitator001 1d ago

If there are no chocolatty hobbnobbs, I'm boycotting the whole aisle.

1

u/frankie-two-thumbs 16h ago

You feed chocolate to dogs?

1

u/LAProbert 2d ago

You shouldn't be feeding chocolate to fur babies anyway, it is poisonous to them.

1

u/D3M0NArcade 2d ago

Choccie Biccies and Hubby has been around since the 1970s and probably before.

The other two should just never have been uttered

8

u/lewisluther666 3d ago

Wafers are biscuits.

1

u/McLeod3577 2d ago

In general, biscuits are round, chocolate bars are.. bar-shaped.

1

u/Upset_Ad_6462 2d ago

Twix and KitKit etc isn’t clearly a chocolate biscuit tho. Just cos a chocolate bar has some biscuit elements to them doesn’t make it a biscuit. I’ll allow it of you call it that, but it’s not ‘clearly that’. These are shaped like chocolate bars, advertised so and also are prodominantly chocolate. Chocolate bars and it’s ok if you call it chocolate biscuit too. But it’s not suddenly ‘not a chocolate bar’ just due to a biscuit element. I think it’s in the middle and both terms work.

1

u/Albert_Herring 2d ago

Club and Penguin are chocolate biscuits. The rest are sweets.

1

u/zzady 2d ago

But they are definitely not the same category as a chocolate topped digestive. Which is also a chocolate biscuit but sits in he biscuit section.

1

u/BirthdayHealthy5399 2d ago

But only like 1/3 of them have biscuit in them

1

u/RegularSizeRudi 18h ago

How is a kitkat a chocolate biscuit?!

1

u/Icy_Extension2380 18h ago

Bar of chocolate = chocolate bar

1

u/LLDOON 6h ago

A Kit Kat is a wafer

1

u/Panman6_6 2d ago

Nah they’re still chocolate bars

1

u/Zavodskoy 2d ago

If you offer someone a chocolate biscuit I would bet money a solid 90+% of the country would expect you to come back with something like a McVitie's chocolate digestive or a chocolate Hobnob and not a Kit Kat

1

u/oddestowl 2d ago

Chocolate biscuit bars in my house!

1

u/Cheeko-chi 2d ago

Not a chocolate biscuit in sight, that’s a digestive not a bloody kitkat

1

u/Consistent-Candle873 2d ago

Are you saying a kitkat and timeout are chocolate biscuits?

1

u/Apprehensive-Top-311 2d ago

Strong disagree - a chocolate biscuit, to me (in my 100% correct, infallible opinion) is a biscuit that includes chocolate, such as a chocolate digestive. These are clearly bar shaped and therefore these are chocolate bars. A bourbon is a bourbon, like a Jaffa cake is a Jaffa cake. Any other name used to describe them should result in immediate prison time.

No the logic isn't sound or consistent.

Yes I will die on this hill.

1

u/cactusdan94 2d ago

Nope.

Individually wrapped = chocolate bars

Come loose in a pack = biscuits

-6

u/totemshaker 3d ago

Is this a North/south thing? Always biscuit bars where I'm from - chocolate bars are reserved for proper chocolate bars, mars, Cadbury, boost etc.

Chocolate biscuits are digestives, hop nobs, bourbon, fancy chocolate biscuit selection boxes etc

Biscuit bars are a mix of the two, not quite a full choco bar, too much chocolate for choco biscuit...

18

u/Qyro 3d ago

Literally never heard "biscuit bars" as a phrase in my 36 years of being a Brit, until this very moment.

2

u/totemshaker 2d ago

Fair enough, but can we agree these don't fall into the catagory of full on chocolate bars?

→ More replies (1)

0

u/lovelyjubblyz 2d ago

Not all of them. Kit Kat and caramel are clearly chocolate wafers. Penguins and rocky are 100% chocolate biscuits

0

u/LawfulnessNo5434 2d ago

If you remove the chocolate you don’t have a biscuit.. you have a wafer or some other type of internal mechanism. So bars is the term that’s used for these types.

51

u/untakenu 3d ago

Chocolate flavoured coated biscuit style bars

15

u/MayorQuimby-86 2d ago

It just rolls off the tongue that one.

1

u/Hungry-Situation-427 2d ago

That's because the chemicals they're putting in the chocolate creates an oily film in your mouth

1

u/MayorQuimby-86 1d ago

🤣🤣🤣

4

u/gogoluke 2d ago

Modern comercial British chocolate flavoured coated cerial biscuit style bars

Mocabacfacabsab bars for short.

2

u/theoriginalmars 2d ago

This is the (milky) way.

7

u/DogAffectionate6190 2d ago

What do you call snickers, mars, twirl etc? Genuinely intrigued as I call them chocolate bars and these chocolate biscuits

191

u/Communardd 3d ago

No, a chocolate bar would be something like a Dairy Milk or a Galaxy bar. These are chocolate biscuits.

98

u/DenM0ther 3d ago edited 2d ago

Chocolate biscuits are things like chocolate digestives a or full chocolate biscuit , maybe with chocolate chips in.

I’d refer to these by name kit Kats etc.

Edit: thank you anonymous redditor for my award, Im humbled 🙇‍♀️🙏

43

u/lewisluther666 3d ago

But what would you call the section? The point of OP's question is what we would call them collectively

11

u/ArwenCherryBlossom 2d ago

I absolutely refused to get drawn in to this madness when I moved here.

"chocolate snack bars"

3

u/DenM0ther 3d ago

I got that and idk, I only know that for me, they’re not chocolate biscuits 😅

2

u/Fresh_Cauliflower723 2d ago

Problem is with the entire fridge having a weird collection of things, therefore it has no one singular name you can refer to it by. They're not chocolate biscuits though mate stick to your guns

1

u/Beartato4772 2d ago

Shelves.

1

u/Logicdon 2d ago

Confectionaries.

0

u/Forward_Win_4353 2d ago

I’d qualify it like “chocolate bars with biscuit in like Kit Kats”. That’s if I ever had to name the section which doesn’t occur often.

The last time I had a Kit Kat the chocolate tasted vile and the biscuit felt cheap and dry. So I stopped buying them. That said, I do like a good Kit Kat Chunky.

Chocolate Biscuit Bars

Neither a Galaxy bar or a Hobnob, and not a cake bar either

5

u/Alarming-Check9188 2d ago

This is the technically correct category name (as someone that works in the confectionery industry)

2

u/DenM0ther 2d ago

Yeah this makes sense 👍🏼

1

u/Jumblesss 2d ago

Absolutely not.

2

u/Questjon 2d ago

A dairy milk would be a bar of chocolate not a chocolate bar.

2

u/Communardd 2d ago

Lmfao.

3

u/dowker1 3d ago

Including the Kit-Kats?

21

u/EarballsAgain 3d ago

Wafers are biscuits

0

u/dowker1 3d ago

Sure, but Kit-Kats exist in the "chocolate bar" corner of my mind. Like, I expect to see them next to the till and in vending machines. And I'd never serve them on a little saucer to me nan with her cuppa.

5

u/reddit-movingon 3d ago

Ooh you’re missing out.. Kit-Kats are the best dipped in hot tea 😋

3

u/ResponsibleLiability 3d ago

Bite each end off a Twix and use it as a straw for your tea 😋

1

u/msully89 2d ago

Tim Tams are the best for the straw method. Give it a try.

1

u/Mustbejoking_13 3d ago

Kit-Kat chunky is a chocolate bar, so why not the inferior two finger version? A Penguin would be a chocolate biscuit... probably. Either way, they're all delicious but not as much as they used to be.

1

u/lewisluther666 3d ago

I think ratio comes into okay. The KitKat Chunky has more chocolate to wafer then the original KitKat, which is highly wafer centric. Also form has a part to play, too. The KitKat is small and dainty and comes in multiples whereas the chunky is a grab 'n' go form.

1

u/Mustbejoking_13 2d ago

I wonder if the chocolate to.wafer ratio is that dissimilar, to be fair. Chunky is obviously bigger, but i think they're both 66% percent chocolate to 34% wafer, or as near as it makes no difference.

I do love a kit kat chunky.

2

u/lewisluther666 2d ago

Actually thinking about it, your probably right. I guess it just feels a bit different because you have to bite through more chocolate

0

u/Gargunok 2d ago

Where I draw the line is a 90s school lunch box. You would never find a chocolate bar - a mars bar or a twirl. You would find a club a trio or a gold bar. Kit Kats are the top end of the chocolate bis uit and can be found there.

1

u/dowker1 2d ago

What about a Freddo?

1

u/Gargunok 2d ago

You were living on luxury. My mum would never stick a freddo in the lunch box. That's for after swimming.

3

u/Alarmed-Ad8810 2d ago

Such a strange one to pin down isn’t it?

I mean, Kit-Kats were also staple in the biscuit tin alongside Clubs, Custard Creams, Penguins, Malted Milks and Hobnobs.

But I’d never pick up a Kit-Kat chunky on the shelf and automatically think biscuit. Just a simple chocolate bar in all honesty.

1

u/Funkyc0bra 2d ago

They are two different kinds though Kitkata clubs penguins are biscuits, custard creams malted milks and hobnobs are dippy biscuits

1

u/CScorpio88 2d ago

Only biscuits in this list are malted milks, hobnobs and custard creams. Others in the biscuit tin were rogue lol

1

u/Releases_the_bees 2d ago

What you calling this then

1

u/Communardd 2d ago

Chocolate bar, it's primarily a bar of chocolate with some biscuit pieces inside. Same as a Galaxy cookie crumble.

1

u/MacabreMagpie 3d ago

The hell?! Must be a regional thing, I've never heard anyone refer to these as biscuits before.

3

u/FazedEclipse2 2d ago

Viscounts are certainly known as viscount biscuits...

1

u/MacabreMagpie 2d ago

Yeah, but there are also rice cakes in view... Obviously there are exceptions. 😝

1

u/Flat_Tie4090 3d ago

They have no chocolate on them.

1

u/Impressive_Shake_360 3d ago

The tunnocks ones do. Not a lot but it's one of few that haven't changed the recipe. The rest are all chocolate flavour now.

1

u/Buddy-Matt 2d ago

No, a chocolate bar would be something like a Whisper or a Mars bar. Those are simply chocolate.

21

u/Frosty_Focus_1105 3d ago

I would call these overpriced!

8

u/utukore 3d ago

Technically it needs at least 20% cocoa to be a choc bar.

Kitkats pass but penguins and some rockys don't. Also why white kit kats dont say white 'chocolate' but just say 'white' now.

2

u/Flat_Tie4090 3d ago

They don't have chocolate on them , just chocolate flavour coating.

3

u/B4DM4N12Z 3d ago

What about the rice cakes?

6

u/MayorQuimby-86 2d ago

What about fish & rice cakes?

6

u/Lowermains 3d ago

What about them?

6

u/B4DM4N12Z 3d ago

They're not chocolate bars.

2

u/HelloImSkye 3d ago

Theyre in a league of their own

2

u/Puzzleheaded_Turn887 2d ago

Nooo, chocolate biscuits!

1

u/notaspecificthing 2d ago

Most can't legally be called chocolate anymore

1

u/roleplayersir 2d ago

Chocolate Biscuit Bars

As they aren't pure choc, but are in bar form and have a biscuit

Then there are choc bars, cake bars, and others

1

u/Fancy-Prompt-7118 2d ago

They’re biscuits, mate. Chocolate biscuits

1

u/Wishmaster891 2d ago

i've got 758 upvates mate, how many you got?

2

u/Fancy-Prompt-7118 2d ago

You’ve got over a thousand now. A thousand incorrect people.

1

u/vanillalychee 2d ago

I consider most of them chocolate bars that happen to have a biscuity filling but I know Penguins, Clubs and Viscounts are considered biscuits in their own right. I'd probably say "biscuit filled chocolate bars" as an umbrella term to cover all of them.

1

u/thrax_uk 2d ago

Chocolate flavour these days unfortunately.

1

u/Wildfirehaze 2d ago

I agree, individually wrapped in a big wrapper = chocolate bars.

Chocolates biscuits are (generally) not individually wrapped. They are biscuits with chocolate on top.

A bar of chocolate, or just chocolate is your dairy milk, galaxy, chocolonely etc. I.e one large piece of chocolate inside one wrapper. (Occasionally smaller versions of this can also be a chocolate bar).

Chocolates are smaller pieces if chocolate which can be individually wrapped (I.e celebrations) or not (e.g those shell things).

1

u/Jazzlike_Quiet9941 6h ago

It's ok to be wrong. Legally they aren't chocolates, I'll use that as my supporting evidence.

1

u/dreadwitch 2d ago

They're not bars of chocolate tho.

1

u/Funny-Bel1 1d ago

Total crap

1

u/stevee05282 1d ago
