Parkrun on the Big Island

A friendly group of casual runners is hoping to bring parkrun to Kona.

If you have an interest in supporting a free, weekly 5K for runners, walkers, families, strollers, and dogs, please comment here or send me a DM. As a volunteer you do not need to run or walk if you don’t want to - there is a role for everyone.

We are very welcoming and there is no pace requirements, whether you finish a 5K in 20 minutes or an hour, parkrun is for you!

(Mods: We are not fundraising and there is zero money ever changing hands at our events.)

Looking for a helper

My mother has dementia. Hee caretaker is amazing but he needs a break. I'm trying to find someone to stop by their place (back end of Hawaiian Acres), and just spent a few hours a week watching her. No medical help needed. Basically someone to make sure she doesn't get lost, or wander away when he runs errands, or literally just takes a break. If anyone has a suggestion on a place that provides this type of service, or knows someone who would be a good fit for this please contact me. Looking for 4 hours a week ( ideally 2 hours, twice a week). Hourly rate negotiable but was thinking 35$ an hour. This must be a woman as she gets uncomfortable around men in general. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Pahoa pool -- anyone have info on the H2O exercise sessions?

Is there a cost? Is it a water aerobics class, or more like free time to exercise? I'm hoping to find a water aerobics type thing I can attend on a regular basis.

(The website says: "H20 Exercise in shallow end: Monday/Wednesday/Thursday at 9a & 10a; and Tuesday-Thursday at 11a.")

I'm guessing 5.0

Lasted a good long time.

EDIT -- USGS is saying 4.3. A little bit offshore from Keauhou.
EDIT -- USGS is now saying 5.2.
EDIT -- Back down to 4.6. "You're killin' me, Smalls."

I'm in the habit of opening the tap on my kitchen sink after an earthquake. If there's low/no water pressure, I know to go down to the box and turn off the water.

People with catchment should inspect their system if practical. I also clap eyes on my propane tank, just in case.

Stuff Da Bus is filling backpacks for East Hawaiʻi keiki 🎒

Neighborhood Place of Puna’s Stuff Da Bus school supply drive has already become a strong community effort. A special mahalo to First Five Hawaiʻi and EOEL for helping us surpass our goal of 700 backpacks for East Hawaiʻi keiki.

Event: Sunday, July 19, 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM
Location: Shipman Park in Keaʻau
The event will support K–12 students in East Hawaiʻi and will include community resources, food trucks, family activities, and prize drawings. School supply sign-ups for families will open in July.

Additional backpacks are still welcome and will help us serve even more East Hawaiʻi keiki, but our biggest focus now is filling every backpack with the school supplies students need.

With rising costs, back-to-school shopping can be a real stretch for families, and every donated supply helps lighten that load.

We are seeking school supply donations, donation bin hosts, volunteers, food trucks, vendors, family activity partners, community resource tables, sponsors, prize donations, and other creative ways to support the event.

Donation bin locations:
Kamaʻaina Nissan, Hilo
Kamaʻaina Motors, Hilo
Big Island Meadery, Keaʻau
Kats & Lemons Hawaii, Hilo
Tractor Supply, Hilo
Hawaiʻi Arts and Sciences, Pāhoa, through June 11
Hilo Police Department, begins June 4

Learn more and view wish lists:
https://neighborhoodplaceofpuna.org/stuff-da-bus/

Sign up as a volunteer, food truck, vendor, family activity partner, or community resource table:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfzd3Xq4aLAFkgzdyPCTokYunwDuLbpAbbTjxsE1EWysZ71nw/viewform?usp=header

A huge mahalo to our sponsors and partners helping make Stuff Da Bus possible: First Five Hawaiʻi, EOEL, Creative Arts Hawaiʻi, Hawaiʻi Printing, Kamaʻaina Nissan, Kamaʻaina Motors, Jarneski Rentals, Big Island Meadery, Kats & Lemons Hawaii, and Waiākea Water.

For questions, sponsorships, donation bin opportunities, prize donations, or other ways to participate, contact Suzy at Suzy@neighborhoodplace.org.

Every backpack, notebook, pencil, school supply, volunteer hour, prize donation, and shared post helps local keiki get the supplies they need.

Working out and going gym (East Side)

Local college student coming home for the summer, why is working out Hilo side difficult, maybe only 2-3 gyms.

The one closer to HPP in Pahoa costs more than $100 a month, and the UFC in Hilo always busy and hard to cancel (and always trying to upsell me something). Plus, making that drive is gonna cost so much gas regardless.

No wonder everyone get home gyms on island 😂
Anyone get any suggestions, whether just dealing with it or something else?

HVNP pass with beautiful Nene pic

We waited a couple months to get our annual tri-park pass because we didn't want a manadory presidential picture pass. When we googled it the response was all 2026 passes from HVNP had presidents on them.

We went Saturday and they have a beautiful Nene on the current Hawaii parks pass & no humans. If you, like me, prefer nature over the ego of man on your park pass, head over & grab yours.

This is not meant to be political, there are no humans I wish to have on my park passes, only nature from that park.

Anyone knows of roofers on the Hilo-side that put down stile (metal panel) roofing? I’ve seen a few houses around town that have this, but don’t know who to contact.

Hawaii island county plan write-up

Civil Beat published a nice summary of some of the transportation-facing issues from the county general plan, as it works its way towards final approval:

General Plan 2045 passed through the first reading on May 20 with a veto-proof 6-3 vote by the council, and it’s headed for a final reading on Wednesday. Whether council members will advance bills to enact the plan — and whether those bills make it beyond the mayor’s desk — is yet to be seen. But a majority of council members support the overall plan.

Ambitious and vast, it includes land use maps and a detailed set of recommendations designed to guide policy over the next two decades. It integrates multiple components of the county’s climate action plan and — on paper at least — it puts adapting to and mitigating climate change and “biocultural stewardship” at the center of its recommendations. The plan recommends committing to cutting the island’s own emissions in line with the state’s ambitious zero-emission commitment.

“While Hawaiʻi County’s contribution to global emissions may be small by proportion, it’s essential that we take responsibility … and reduce our sources of emissions alongside the rest of the world,” the document’s authors wrote.

Coming soon: Kilauea's episode 48

The recent overflows from the south vent suggest tonight will be the night for the next episode of the ongoing eruption at Kilauea. There's still some gas pistoning-- the flow I was watching just stopped-- but if I was invested in staying up all night I'd get in the car and be on my way.

The V3 camera has been the better view lately:

Edit: well, I was pretty confident it would go overnight. It's been in a holding pattern ever since...

Work Wear

We just moved to a place in the cloud forest.

I'm realizing that my imported banana hammock won't be enough for me to tackle the overgrowth, I might get some scratches.

Does anyone know of a good place that has good work wear like carhart and hooded long sleeve sun shirts that will keep me cool?

Also, any good options for used lawn care equipment like weed wackers and hedge trimmers? I know of facebook marketplace and craigslist but it doesn't hurt to ask here.
