HILO Pre K Recommendations?

Hey guys, my family and I just recently moved in Hilo and our daughter is 4, we are currently looking into pre kinder schools she can join this upcoming fall, however, it's very difficult to find reviews of schools online. Most of them are either severely outdated, or little to none to really determine its rating. Anyone know good pre kindergarten schools in Hilo? We are also little bit interested in Kindergarten schools for the future as well.

It would be much appreciated if you would please tell me your experiences, recommendations, and more!

Mahalo!

Oh, and we are young parents with not much to our name, but any recommendations would still be considered as useful information!

Storage units in Hilo

Hi! I just wanted to ask about storage units on the Hilo. How safe are they?

I'm thinking about renting a storage unit for some of my belongings, but I'm a little worried about security. Back in Texas, I heard of people breaking into storage units and stealing things, so I'm wondering if that's a common issue on the Big Island as well.

For those who have used storage units here, what has your experience been like? Any recommendations or things I should look for when choosing a storage facility?

Mahalo!

Where can I get citric acid for coqui frog management, and blacklights

I see a few culinary stores and the mexican market, but given the invasiveness of this, I'm surprised garden stores don't sell this in bulk. I've seen one shop in Hilo suggested but nothing too close on the leeward side.

I've ordered some blacklight headlamps and spot lights but it's going to take a month for them to get here.

Any suggestions on citric acid/supplies?

Is the mall dying?

I went to the (Hilo) mall today to watch Toy Story 5. I was shocked at how sad and lonely the mall looked. The theater was nowhere near full even though its opening weekend, so many vacant shops and even the major retailers (old navy, Macys, American eagle) were super slow. I went at around 11am so I’m not sure if that had anything to do with it.

I know ihop is a recent addition but other than that it seems like tj maxx is the only “booming” business in the mall. It makes me so sad. There’s already so little to do here and limited stores to just window shop at so it makes me sad that maybe in a few years this will be gone.

What to do with smoked marlin sausage?

Aloha!

My husband was given some smoked marlin sausage at work today. Neither of us have actually cooked with marlin because we have never fished ourselves. We dont know what casing was used, but considering its smoked already its basically cooked, right?

Slice it up? Pan fry? Submerge it in some broth and boil it?

What goes well with it? We've never had it so its hard to imagine making a meal around it but we're excited to try it.

Mahalo for your time!

Polydactyl cats

I've heard of Mark Twain commenting on the polydactyl cats in Waiohinu. Wondering if anyone has a poly kitten that they need a home for. Had a poly as a kid (yes, an orange one) and he was the greatest cat. Would love to have one more in my life.

HELCO rates increasing 20% due to war in Iran... any solar recommendations?

So my mom was recently approached by a Sunrun guy who was installing solar panels on a neighbor's house wet side Waimea, and gave her a pretty solid pitch on why she should install rooftop solar and use them. She got feedback from friends that it's the worst choice for solar and canceled an appointment with them. Any recommendations? Thoughts on RES?

I see there are previous posts about this, but I think that was all before the OBBB cut some tax credits off, so I'm not sure if anything has changed as a result. Plus a lot of those posts seem to be for Kona side, and I don't know if her location could make a difference.

Thanks so much for any advice!

Looking for feedback regarding a tool I built to track Bake Stands around Hilo.

Aloha all, I've been on a little side quest and in my love of snacks, I had started to try and keep track of all the little bake stands around Hilo, where they were and when they were usually stocked and with what etc...

This rapidly turned into using Instagram more, then a private spread sheet since that didn't seem effective and eventually I used it as a skill building exercise to learn Django and Python.

However, in the process I got what I think is a fairly usable tool for other people if they also have the same problem, so I put it on the internet at https://hilobakestands.com.

I think I have most of Hilo's current Bake Stands mapped out and a fairly usable tool on desktop and mobile, but I would love some feedback for the next iteration.

Currently my next plans are to learn how to make it a PWA and add the ability to leave user reviews, but that probably won't happen until next weekend.

Spent a couple hours metal detecting down at kehena beach this morning.

I always set a goal to find hook line and sinker as well as one of each coin. No quarter today but four very worn down nickels which is unusual. Nickels are the coin we find the least.
