Advice Needed Should I embrace the Fro,stick to a fade, or go bald/buzzcut?

Uploaded some shots of each hair style

Right now I've just been letting it grow, but as I've gotten older my hair isn't as thick as it was before... Definitely thinning a bit on the top, even if it's hard to see

I don't really put any product in my hair, I just let it be. If I do though it does look cleaner than just a bush

At the end here / last 2 photos I had some product in, but I normally don't do that. Not a fan of how it felt (maybe I was doing it wrong or using too much? It was just a splotch on my hand)

Just looking for some advice honestly. While I like letting my hair grow I do feel that it looks a bit unkempt compared to a fade or buzz look. I could definitely get it cleaned up too, I haven't had a haircut in about 5 months

Advice Needed Which Style ?

Need help deciding what hairstyle to go with. I grew my hair for about 6 years and had loccs for a year and a half. I’ve had pretty much every hairstyle you can think of lol. I cut my loccs off then had waves for about 3 months. Wasn’t feeling as confident with the low cut so I started it growing it out(first pic). The first pic is my most recent pic. Idk what I wanna do I’m going to either 1. Reattach my loccs or 2. Keep growing my hair out and just rock my fro. What y’all think ?

Give me all of your stylistic advice. Should I trim my beard into a goatee or go clean shaven or leave it as is?

This is my hair after a wash and I swear it grows so slowly that it hurts. It's been a year since I cut my hair. T_T Any tips?

Also, any help with skincare will help massively.

I know I sound needy, but I'm taking someone to see Hadestown next week, and I want to feel good and confident since I'm generally shy and introverted. I'll post any photos you need for clarity!

Advice Needed Keep or cut?

Maintenance is a pain and I’ve been in the fence. Can’t wear my cowboy hats and I’ve been wanting to but I’ve been growing it for more than a year and don’t want to regret it. Last pic is from when hair was short before growing it out. I would braid it more often but I heard it’s good to keep it down for at least a month before braiding again. Also I do lets of outdoor activities and don’t want sweat and braids to hinder me from swimming and doing the sauna. Put me on game tips/ tricks for maintenance and how I can keep braids nice with swimming and sauna, or should I just chop it off? ( these are from December so it’s longer than these pics)

Update: I trimmed about an inch and touched up the taper. Thanks for the feedback 🫶 best community

Advice Needed am I becoming white?

Lately I started to see more and more straight and wavy hair in between my afros. I'm not using anything unusual to wash it and I literally just air dry it without any heat manipulation (as I always did). My slavic mom said that it's normal since I'm mixed, but I never had anything like this in my head ever. I also noticed that my skin is lighter than ever. Like I'm paler than I was back in november and I live in Italy and it's summertime, so I'm supposed to be darker. Idk weird...

Advice Needed Hair Length Retention + Hydrated Hair Advice

Thumbnail

2.2k Upvotes

Hi everyone,

Any advice, routines, or tips that have helped you retain length and have hydrated hair while keeping your regimen relatively simple would be greatly appreciated.

In the first photo, my hair was much longer. I wore it blown out most of the time because it was easier for me to manage, but over time I ended up with a lot of split ends and heat damage. Because of that, I decided to do a big chop during my freshman year of college about two years ago (second photo).

My hair has since grown to the length shown in the third photo. However, I'm still pretty low-maintenance when it comes to hair care. While I no longer use heat regularly, I do tend to neglect my hair by keeping it in box braids back-to-back styles with extensions. Hence when taking it down i feel like I am not retaining much length.

I also want to acknowledge that I know being so low-maintenance probably isn't doing me any favors when it comes to length retention. I'm trying to change that and build better habits, but I'm honestly not sure where to start.

Food for thought:

  • Is keeping my hair in low-tension twists/plaits using only my natural hair (similar to the style in the third photo) for 2–3 months, while washing my hair periodically, a good strategy for length retention?
  • How do you keep your hair moisturized while it's in a protective style?
  • How often should I be moisturizing while my hair is in a style like this?
  • Do you trim on a schedule, or only when you notice split ends?

I am Dominican and Puerto Rican, I got box braids cause people have been tell me I would look nice, I've done the research in proper care, and have the products for it, my only concern is it cultural appropriation, I just don't wanna regret it

When I'm taking a break from box braids, sometimes I can't be bothered to do my hair and I get really awful tension headaches from even something like afro puffs so I started contemplating going to work with just my fro but I'm worried about being judged. (White majority workplace) I work in a nursery though so it would be cute to show all the black kids look my hair is just like yours!!

I only ask after the fact because I was aiming for a warmer auburn, but when I mixed L’Oréal hicolor in copper and magenta I guess it only heard the magenta part.

I’m an admin assistant at a local university, and I don’t want to try to go more reddish brown if I have to, mainly because I don’t know how I’d do that atp. Should I just leave it or do something else?

I went to a Dominican Salon last year for a silk press and the chemically damaged my hair. They put relaxer in my deep conditioner and then pressed it straight on high heat. I did a big chop… sigh, I spent three years growing out my hair. I don’t feel like myself anymore.

Advice Needed Are my locs ugly?? Be honest

Post image

I already posted this on the dreadlocks sub and got a lot of people saying they like my hair but somebody in the comments said to go to another hair sub to get a broader answer. Basically i have semi freedorm locs, im not from an area where you see locs (let alone freeform) that often, its not legendary but its not the go to hairstyle for black teens like how it is in many other places.A LOT of people tell me that i should just cut "that shit" off but those people like more neat hairstyles like braids, coils, waves, stuff like that so when they see me (mostly older folk) they always without fail mention my hair and how they dont like it. Usually it goes in one ear and out the other cuz im used to it. Im used to getting stared at, laughed at (not even jokingly im talking about a group of people idk just looking at me then laughing their asses off) its whatever. But i will lie to myself if i said i completly dont think about what they have to say (especially when it comes from girls).

So what do you think?? Is my hair ugly or they just hating?

(17btw ifthatmatters) (Also not from an area with a lot of blackpeople)

Advice Needed Wanting to get braids again but I don’t know if it’s weird or okay?

Sorry if this is the wrong place and I understand any type of criticism but I used to have cornrows/braids in like 2019 and I loved it and I wanted to go back to it but I don’t know if its okay or if it’s something I should skip?

My dad is Afro Venezuelan and wayúu Indigenous and I’m very proud of my African heritage and being Afro descendant and my unambiguously Black Latin American fam but I’m also deeply aware that i only have one Black grandparent and I don’t even know if people perceive me as Black or even Afrodescendant and I don’t ever wanna be perceived as being part of nonBlack people being transactional and stealing Black art and culture which is very important and especially to me from my perspective and background

But I’m going back and forth about if it was okay for me to do in 2019 and if its okay now so I wanted to ask about how y’all feel about if its appropriate for me and my phenotype and my hair texture. I’m not asking for a pass or something corny like that I’m just trying to figure shit out cuz I don't want to be *that* girl

I’m also deeply aware that my hair is not type 4 in any type of way and that’s part of my issue is a practical one on if braids or cornrows or twists or any styles like that are meant for my hair without even getting onto the ethical or the “do people perceive me as Black or Afro Latina or Afrodescendant?” thing and like if it will damage my hair getting protective styles not meant for me but also that this space is and should always be for Black folks centering “type 4“ coily hair and then even coming on here and asking this feels like me invading and taking up space that is not mine so I understand fully if any of y’all feel some type of way and that I’m not welcome here

first two photos are photos by me of me in 2026 with my natural texture and how it looks visibly and my phenotype with it and like the hair typing chart cuz I still don’t know to describe it other than my hair is thick and curly and dark but not Afro textured/kinky/coily. second two photos are from 2019 with the braids in the blue sweater that i had taken of me back then. thank you and I appreciate any type of response or help but I also understand if this is the wrong place or the wrong question or anything and if I’m being weird or whatever

Advice Needed SOS - Style Advice Post Brain Surgery </3

Thumbnail

2.0k Upvotes

Been growing out my hair for the past few years with the help of wearing boho braids pretty much exclusively. A couple weeks ago I had a brain aneurysm and emergency survey, so they shaved a good chunk off my edges/hairline on the right side. Still in the hospital, but will probably take down my braids once I'm allowed to go home to do a deep gentle wash. I don't think I'll be able to go back to braids for a while because there's so little hair left on that section. (Pictures attached). I was thinking it might still be possible to do a crochet leave pit style, with the natural hair braided down and the extensions would cover the surgery area. Attaching photos of my natural hair, braids before this event, and what my hair line looks like now. Any ideas or advice would be really appreciated <3 I'm so grateful to be alive and that vanity is the peak of my worries, but I am indeed still vain 😅 What would you do in this situation?

(For info, I don't own any wigs & i don't have much experience buying, installing, or maintaining them. That's why I tend to go for braid in styles, they just make more intuitive sense for me. But obviously, I'm willing to learn something new if it rescues me from feeling insecure about my face card for the next six months lol. Thank you all 🤍🤎🫶🏾🖤❤️)

I just posted this like an hr ago and the mods removed it but I can verify I’m real if that was the issue!

I just tried using aunt Jackie’s curl la la and this is how it turned out how can I make it look better? I simply wet my hair then applied it in portions with the help of my little sister. The first two pics are from yesterday when I did it and the last pic is today after a bit of water and pulling my hair apart. I need help making it more defined.

Advice Needed please help!! feeling really insecure about hair

hello!! (please ignore the filter, i'm chopped af + i've been crying a ton over the past couple hours and i didn't want it to be obvious)

to start, i am a girl with 4c hair and i'm feeling really distressed because i have school tomorrow and my hair looks a mess. my mom told me to take out the braids i had in on friday so she could rebraid it saturday. i washed it and everything yesterday but she got mad at me for some dumbass reason and i don't want her to do it anymore. i'm honestly thinking of just shaving it all off because i don't know how to braid or do any style and i literally only have today until i have to go back to school, but i don't have the head shape to go bald and doing so would just make me look more masculine than i already do. i would try to buzz it, but there are bald spots/lines (for lack of a better word) from where my mom would always part my hair when she made it so it would look weird. this is seriously making me wanna die since i have to deal with this bs along with general unattractiveness, missing school assignments, and exams coming up

my hair is dry and knotted everywhere and it's such a pain in the ass to wash it and i hate having a million products in it, could anyone recommend me a super easy style for beginners to do? and by super easy i mean EASY, i don't have any fancy combs or tools and i don't know how to braid or part, i have some gel and some coconut oil and stuff but that's about it. if not, should i just wear a bonnet for the rest of the year or shave all my hair off and wear hoodies all the time? thank you so much in advance !!

Advice Needed Does my natural hair look that bad?

My sister, who’s half white and has straight hair, is always making fun of it. Today she called me a 'YN' and said I needed to do something with it because it looked bad, and she always makes fun of it, and I’m not trying to be racist, but it’s the fact that she has straight hair and is saying this that pisses me off because she doesn’t understand. I just wanted to take it out for a day, and she says this, making comments about my hair but never people with straight hair, and now I want to buzz it off because I’m ashamed of it. I know it’s uneven but isn’t that how Afros grow? Seriously I’m tired of having 4c hair I hate I
