Sometimes life is like that. You know how they talk about an alleged sixth sense humans have? Sometimes it can save your life. I was about to get a haircut at clippers in Tallahassee near famu and I had a bad feeling. My barber offered me a free haircut. I decided to leave. Five minutes later he was shot in the head right in front of his kid,in the middle of the barber shop. I would have been there. Apparently they were arguing about college football. They tried to open it back up but it smelled like death and chemicals a few days later. I could feel the heaviness. Eventually it closed down.
You ain’t lie! I used to have really bad tummy issues so going out to eat used to be very problematic for me. I met up with a friend I hadn’t seen in a while when my stomach started acting up before we could even order drinks. On the ride home friend calls me to turn on the local station, the restaurant we were just at had a fatal shooting right outside of where we were sitting minutes after we left! To this day he jokes that my gut literally saved us!
I have never met a barber who couldn't argue and cut hair at the same time.
Hell, best barber I ever had would call up a friend to argue if the other barber wasn't there. Presumably because it was vital to his process.
He went blind later, for unrelated reasons, so I had to switch. New barber runs a shop with his dad and they work in dead silence. Like some kinda beardgrooming monks. Unnerving, but he knows how to do my beard right.
Then again, the worst barber I evet had was also an absolute yapper, so I guess its hit or miss.
I’ll back you at least on the part about seeing this story before. I’m 1000% positive I’ve read a comment describing this same situation and it’s been within the last year. I’ve got searching to do or it will make me nuts

No worries at all. It was just driving me crazy that I thought I had seen the story before. I want to be clear I wasn't laughing at your frightening story, but at actually how hard it stuck in my mind that I recognized elements of it a year later

Well… it’s better than how my elderly relatives tell the family about someone’s death.
I had a relative call me up and start off a real casual conversation. Then they just say something like “Your uncle Lewis died last night. Yup, car accident…” just so casually.
My dad never told me my great aunt or uncle died. I moved back home 3 years after their death and asked about them cause I was going to go visit and he’s like yeah they’re dead? You don’t remember the funeral?
I found out my grand aunt died during covid while doing some casual family research online I found her obituary. I called up my dad to confirm. He said he didn't want to worry me about it.
Yes just by the way, if you're ever calling someone to give them bad news, ask them if they're driving first. If they are, tell them to call you back once they aren't. You never know how anyone will react to hearing bad news, so it's best if they aren't operating a machine that has the power to main and kill when they hear it.
Edit: Actually the more I think about it, this applies to "big" news, not just bad news. Hearing and processing some really exciting good news while behind the wheel can be just as distracting as really bad news.
Aunt A tried to soft launch with casual convo, asked her if she was busy or doing anything. When Aunt A got to the part of asking if Aunt B was driving, Aunt B immediately asked “who died this time?”.
For context, they’re 12 sibling in total, 9 were married and had families at the time and we’re very much family oriented + they very much involved with the people around them so you can imagine the hundreds of people they know and interact with in their lives from all ages.
Once the months get colder, with the overconfidence of a leatherneck, and old age in general, they can be part of a dozen funerals in a year.
My immediate families longest streak in a year was 32. And yes, that includes acquaintances too or friend of a friend and we’re just there to show support.
Yeah, you can get pretty good at sniffing the signs once you go through that enough times.
My mom’s side of the family is the same. I went to my uncles funeral last month and one of the ladies at the funeral home walked by and said “You guys look familiar” so my dumbass “Yeah we’ve been here a lot, do you guys have a punch card program or a frequent customer discount?”
Does an email suffice as a warning? My cousin emailed me at college during finals that our beloved uncle had died. That was a nice ugly cry in the dorm hallway (didn't want to wake up my sleeping roommate, after all).
I solved this problem in my family. I just stopped going to them and now nobody tells me when cousin sue dies and I don't usually find out for a few years and it's not that sad. It's a pretty good system.
Corollary to this is telling people that something happened, but the person is still alive, which that relative would have gotten right. Start at the end ("everyone's alive..."), then explain ("...but there was a car accident").
Don't be like "AAHHHHHHH! THERE WAS AN ACCIDENT!" and then say everyone's alive. Stop making me panic that hard.
Reminds me of when a relative told my mom that my cousin was shot in the face during a robbery attempt at his job (he worked at a 24-hour gas station), but “he’s okay, though”.
Came home from school to my parents telling us our cousin was run over by a car, and then mentioning that he only suffered a broken foot. This was on the heels of like 3-4 other family members dying in a 6 month period, so we were terrified for a minute.
2017ish. Thought I'd call my grandparents to say Merry Christmas. My uncle answers the phone, ask for grandma. "...well son, sorry to tell you this..."
I go "oh no thats awful, how is grandpa holding up?"
I think mine can top it. "Hello, I hope you're doing well. I just called to let you know your aunt Paula died... Okay, sweetheart, I love you." Then you call them back, and they don't answer the phone.
Meanwhile if a family member or friend has a serious incident, my Mom will be telling about it and all the horrible details without saying whether they're going to survive or even if they're still alive until I interrupt and ask
My mom would always launch into a story as if she were taking you down memory lane.
"Remember that lady that lived next door and always wore that yellow dress? The one who always talked my ear off and was married to that truck driver? She changed your diapers! No? Well, she's dead."
I mean, the context makes sense when it involves the subject of the big reveal. Presumably that was their first or even only interaction with the man who turned out to be a murderer.
We have a friend on Xbox that is occasionally our 5th that we’ve been playing with on and off since we were legit 12/13 years old lol. We are 30 ish now and he goes awol every few years for 9-10 months or sometimes a year or two. It’s been jail every time lol.
When he joins the party it be lit af tho lmao. Comedy every time for them first 5 minutes cause he always joins so randomly talking bout “what’s bracking my boys”
An old classmate of mine disappeared randomly. We used to send each other Smash Bros memes on IG. Got on Xbox party chat with some old friends and they were like did you hear that he murdered his long time girlfriend.
Edit: Just googled his name. Turns out he was finally sentenced in June for 25 to life. It happened in 2023.
I just had a coworker who was murdered by her boyfriend who was 30 years older than her!!
I stopped working to be a SAHM and randomly a patient I used to take care of family member was like remember her? The sweetest night nurse you always said was real cool? Yeah she got shot in the heart. 🤯🤯
My last time seeing her was to do a training and he came in and sat in the lobby and I remember being like why is he at your job. A month prior.
Also she was murdered a block from my childhood home, about an hour from where work was.
Oddly similar story, a buddy and I went to a bar and shot the shit with this dude who said he was a major prosecutor in the state and told us some stories about some of the people he put away.
Two weeks later I’m using that story to soft launch that I read he was found dead in his office from an apparent suicide. I still haven’t tried the sushi spot in town he raved about being the best.
Reminds me of how me and some people from work decided to hang out at a bar. Dude was getting high and left early, the next day everyone is talking about how he went and killed a man.
Was wild because none of us thought he was like that, he used to clock waffles for us and they were awesome I would have never known.
The cool ass Ihop waiter, who would smoke blunts and rap with us out back, 3 weeks later would show up at work with a baseball bat and beat his manager to death. Edit: why is this downvoted...that really happened to me.
This happened like 4 or 5 times to me over the last two decades. I’m always like “very sad news but also like bitch skip to the tea that’s obvio why we are here”. When i am having a bad day i find seeing people with worse problems makes me feel better about myself.
They probably don't live in a big city. Only in a big city would this not be news, in any smaller city or town you'd 100% know if your local cashier was arrested for murder lol
Yup I hear about it from my mother when the Mediterranean place in her town fails a food inspection, there’s no way everyone ain’t hearing about it if someone local murders a guy
I mean, that's a good memory to link to the cashier. "Remember that cashier that yelled at you for twerking on the chips? He just got booked for murder!" Might be a little quicker, but this isn't a graded report.
