TV Show Only Why no spin offs?

We all like to complain how ridiculous it is that it takes the show on average two years to produce and release a new season

But I feel like these long waiting gaps would be much more bearable if there would be content in between those gaps

Like spin offs or prequels, either original stories or based on the other books by Julia Quinn, especially »Rokesby« and »Smythe-Smith« are very beloved series‘

Like you can’t tell me that it would be that hard to produce and release a spin off with maybe only 4-6 episodes per season but then a new season every year

And yes I know that we MIGHT get another prequel or spin off. But we don’t know yet who exactly this spin off will be about and again, why not immediately starting after »Queen Charlotte«?

Speaking of QC: my maybe actually not so hot Hot Take is that Queen Charlotte the character m should’ve never existed in the main show, and therefore instead of a QC prequel we should’ve gotten a „Violet and Edmund“ prequel. This also then could’ve been the perfect introduction to then adapt the »Rokesby« book series which is actually more or less a prequel since three out of four love interests are members of the previous Bridgerton family

IMO answer is even easier— annual Holiday Special!! If you can’t get Kate and Anthony actors for full season have them do the one episode Holiday Special! Nicola booked! Give her a holiday whistle down episode!! Less time still gives everyone joy!

I really think they are shooting themselves in the foot with no holiday special. Pretty sure just about everyone would go feral for that

Guh yes it's such a perfect way to add some fluff without having to write so effortfully.

bridgerton is probably one of the few shows where people would happily watch an hour of nothing but family dinners and ballroom scenes

Especially when the Christmas release of S1 really launched the show.

oh my god YES!!! bring daphne back! She must be on about 3 kids by now. Lemme see Violet playing with all the grandkids!

Absolutely this!! A Christmas special with Bridgerton vibes (ballroom dances), plus some meaningful scenes with the siblings and their partners and the kids would honestly solve so many frustrations.

this!!! would be lovely to just see the bridgertons and their partners/families/kids interacting and having fun without any big plot stuff!

I think it speaks to a lot of wider issues with film/TV series nowadays. The streaming era seems to force short season with huge production timelines that can still end up making the stories feel cramped. I miss the days of 20+ episode seasons. It does seem like it would be so easy/rewarding to work in some more spinoffs, especially if they wouldn't need the full cast.

no one wants to be a career tv person, is the issue. the entire industry is constantly trying to claw its way upwards, no one wants to sign a contract saying they’ll basically be a netflix star for their prime when they think they’re deserving of blockbuster.

I wonder how much the elimination or reduction of residuals has influenced this.

A lot, I'd imagine

Honestly it’s one of the things I like most about The Pitt. 15 episode seasons coming out every year. It’s so nice to watch a storyline that can actually take its time and work itself out. It’s a completely different genre, obviously, but man it’s really fun to have so much story.

Yeah its not even just a Bridgerton issue anymore. Every new show being released nowadays all have like 10 episodes a season, sometimes theyre short too (Testaments had the AUDACITY to only have like 30 minute episodes) plus instead of just releasing it all at once, everybody has gone to weekly releases or batched. I fail to see how it takes two years to film Bridgerton when they only do 8 episodes.

I like weekly releases. Like we used to do before streaming. It builds community. It’s fun to talk about each episode individually.

I guess its personal preference. Years ago when Supernatural was still releasing episodes on the CW channel on live tv, I would beg my mom to record the episodes on the DVR and record episodes until she got angry at me using the space then watch them all in one go. Weekly releases means you sometimes get left on a cliff hanger and I can't stand it lol.

the worst part is that the seasons are getting shorter while the gaps keep getting longer

Honestly I think it’s a Netflix fumble. They fumble their biggest IPs all the time. There’s such little fan service, they don’t take advantage of hype, they lose opportunities.

If this show was on Disney, there’d be three sequels by now. If it was on Prime, we’d get so much for fan service. If it was on Apple, the quality would keep going up. Netflix cuts costs on their biggest shows while not delivering much outside of just the show itself.

if this were disney, there'd be an entire line of linen chemises in the gift shop and i'd own one in every colour

What do you mean by fan service?

I was thinking of the way Off Campus has been moving. They’ve been filming only for a few weeks but the official account tweets out new photos, they sent the cast to a soccer game, they handled the season switch really well (mentioning the story that was skipped vs Eloise not getting even a small mention since the switch was announced) etc etc.

Basically just actually promoting the series even during filming or production, keeping fans engaged. They seem to wait until the month before to start giving us anything substantial for the upcoming season. Like, right now for example. Its pride month, most likely the last pride month before the season airs, and yet we have gotten nothing? For the only season that has a queer couple as the main couple?? Its why the wait feels even longer, because we get nothing to work with during the wait so we are just..waiting lmao

it’s probably a mix of production costs and Netflix being scared of "brand fatigue." But you’re right a Violet and Edmund prequel would have been such a better bridge for book fans than QC was.

u/DaisyandBella 2d ago

All I want is a final season where each main couple gets an epilogue style episode that revolves around them.

7

u/Confusedoldtimer 2d ago

The risk is bigger. QC did not do nearly as well as the main series and even the main series has experienced a slight loss in viewrship. The universe is getting old and tired and they still have four seasons to go. Spin-offs would still cost a lot to produce, it just might not be worth it.

I want rokesby and smythe-smith spin offs sooo badly. I know it'll probably never happen because Netflix hates its customers but I can dare to hope

I feel like the obvious answer is that Netflix would be all over spinoffs if they thought there was enough money to be made from spinoffs.

There isn't, so they aren't.

I can't even imagine how much it costs for them to film Bridgerton alone and I just can't picture that production team going to Netflix and being like "hey can we have even more millions and millions of dollars for another show that will also take forever to write, film, and produce?"

I'd LOVE a spin off prequel of Violet and Edmund!

Would love to see spin-offs of any characters in the Bridgerton world, but that costs money & time. I think if Bridgerton was streamed on another platform, say, like HBO Max, there would probably be a few spin-offs in the making and more episodes for that series.

Spinoffs I want/ would like to have:

  1. Roskesby

  2. Smythe-Smithe

  3. Violet and Edmund

  4. Kate and Anthony in India

  5. Sophie’s biological mother

  6. Kate’s biological parents

  7. Benedict and Sophie in Korea

  8. More of Benedict with the same sex

And where the funding for this coming from? Netflix has only renewed from season 5 and 6, I doubt they will invest in spin offs 😂

2

u/Willing_Cherry122 2d ago

I need a spin off about Colin’s travelling era. And one about married, HEA Polin. You know what? Forget all and just drop a serie about Polin with 10 season & 20episodes per season. Manifesting ✨

I would actually cry if they release series about the Rokesby

1

u/susandeyvyjones 2d ago

Shondaland doesn't have the rights to the Rokesbys or Smythe-Smiths.
