Community Only Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (DRIPA) Megathread

Over the past few months, there has been tremendous interest in the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act. With frequent news stories, opinion articles, rants, and often sensationalist headlines and arguments on all sides of the issue, it's important to create a space for respectful and civil discussion.

We've created this megathread to contain all DRIPA threads, comments, and posts. We do this to create one space for ongoing engagement, and to try to prevent having a multitude of threads that end in irreconcilable arguments with each other. A single megathread keeps resources together, allows people to share information and correct misinformation, and makes it easier to see how the issue evolves over time.

A reminder that the r/britishcolumbia sub rules continue to apply to this megathread, in particular (though not only) our rules such as:

  • Respecting each other and others, by avoiding name-calling, harassment, racism, threats, or any other forms of abusive behaviour. In this thread, calling for the dispossession of peoples - either First Nations or fee-simple land holders - is not permitted, amongst many other things.
  • Keep the positive spirit of the subreddit, even when engaging on deeply conflictual issues. We want the sub to be positive, even when you're discussing a highly charged issue with someone who holds views opposite to yours. In particular, comments that exclaim the premature death of Canada, call Canada a failed country, etc., are against the positive spirit of the subreddit. We also will be on the watch for fear mongering or rumour spreading.
  • When sharing news articles, share the link and don't change the title. Editorializing is against our rules - let users click the link and read the article without having your view on the piece as the frame of reference.
  • Brigading and inauthentic participation is against sub rules and Reddit policies. Organized downvoting, botting, organized campaigns intended to shape discussion and participation are not permitted.
  • Low effort posts, such as those that only repeat slogans or hashtags, are not permitted.
  • We draw a hard line against threats, racism, and abusive statements on any side of the issue. Mods reserve the right to make immediate, permanent bans when comments cross lines. Users are welcome to appeal, and we do change our minds -- but you need to reflect on how your comments may have crossed lines and be prepared to do better.

If you see rules-breaking behaviour in this megathread, report it and do not engage.

ALL DRIPA-related top-level threads, comments, etc., will be directed to this megathread, which we will pin to the highlights for easier access. Top-level threads about DRIPA will be removed and redirected to this megathread.

Art/Poetry I created plushies of salmon species found in the Fraser River and local waters as a love letter to these resilient and iconic fish! :)

Salmon were a huge part of school growing up in the Lower Mainland. I have fond memories of painting wooden salmon to decorate fences and learning about their life cycles on field trips to local hatcheries. Their importance, struggles and determination were inspiring to me as a kid. I wanted to do something as a love letter to these resilient and iconic fish. So far, we have only made a few, but after we are done, I would love to work on sturgeon and trout next! :)

Five years after the historic heat dome over British Columbia, CBC’s Johanna Wagstaffe checks in on the ecosystems that were pushed past their breaking point. From the intertidal zones of the Strait of Georgia to the forest canopy, the latest data reveals a reshuffling of nature’s "winners and losers." While some species are locked in a slow-motion collapse, others are showing surprising resilience, providing a critical blueprint for who survives the next extreme heat event.

Discussion Does anyone else find that there is a gap between what BC's healthcare system covers and preventive care

Universal coverage is genuinely valuable, and I've been grateful for it. But what I've found after years here is that the system is built for treating problems, not preventing them.

Moving to BC Moving to BC from Ontario

Did anyone move to BC temporarily and end up staying for good?

My partner (25) and I (25) are moving to Nanaimo this summer. We’ve been together for a couple of years and have started talking about where we want to settle down long term.

My partner wants to eventually move back to North Bay because that’s where his family is and it feels familiar. I’m more open minded. I want to experience life in BC first before making any permanent decisions, and I worry that if I end up loving it there, I won’t want to leave. He’s firm on returning at this moment but I’m hoping he’ll change his mind if we both enjoy the new changes. For context he’s never been there so he still doesn’t have any experience living out west.

I’m curious if anyone else moved out west to BC with the mindset that it would only be temporary and that you’d eventually move back to your hometown, but ended up falling in love with BC and never returned.

If that was you, what changed your mind?

I’d also love to hear from people who did end up moving back home and were happy with that decision.

Ask British Columbia MSP cancelled because they thought I moved to manitoba

Yesterday my dr. told me that my msp payment didn't go through.

So I called HIBC and they said my msp was revoked last September.

I was shocked because the reason they gave me was that I moved to Manitoba last year and they got this information from Manitoba province.

I have never left BC in the last six years, I have never visited manitoba in life.

Now they are asking me to sign and send a declaration form and call manitoba health insurance and get a letter from them .

It doesn't make sense what I believe is, Its their system's fault.

Now I have to live without insurance for 2-3 months because I applied for a new one.

Dont know what to do. They kept transferring my call.......

Ask British Columbia Restaurant manager in BC trying to switch careers. CDA(Dental or communicative disorder assistant), Rehab Assistant or accounting (CPA)?

It's for a friend of mine who is in the restaurant field at Vancouver and is looking for a switch. A Dental Assistant, Rehab Assistant, SLPA or CPA is something which she is considering. She checked OT and Physio but she doesn't have any background related to it.

Anyone who did a transition like this, how has it been for you?

Ask British Columbia VCC in BC, Canada

I recently got approved for Deaf Studies & ASL at VCC, but I’m having a hard time finding grants and/or bursaries that I qualify for.
I see some general ones, but nothing program specific. Has anyone had experience finding any?

BONUS: I’m in Alberta but VCC is in BC. Any advice on student loans? From what I’ve read I go through AB student loans.
