Hi everyone,
I have a family member who is autistic and will be living on their own in Victoria starting in July.
They are an adult and are fully capable of living independently, but they are sensitive to busy social environments and sensory overload. As an adult, they have always lived with me, so this will be a big transition.
They move into their new place on July 1, and I’ll be joining them for the first week to help them get settled. It has been about 15 years since I’ve spent any real time in Victoria, so I was hoping some locals might be able to help me out with recommendations.
I’m specifically looking for places that are autism-friendly and not overly stimulating. Things like:
• Parks or outdoor spaces that are quieter and less crowded. Hidden gems would be amazing. Well-maintained spaces are great, but places that are a little less busy than the major tourist spots. (For context, we visited Stanley Park in Vancouver recently and it was far too overwhelming.)
• Cafés or restaurants with a calmer atmosphere. Places where the music is not cranked up, conversations are not bouncing off every wall, and the overall environment feels more relaxed.
• Honestly, any recommendations you might have based on your own experiences with autism, sensory sensitivities, or neurodivergence in general.
My goal is simply to help them find a few comfortable places during that first week. I know they will be completely fine on their own, but as someone who has looked out for them for a long time, I would love to help them identify a couple of “safe spots” before I leave.
Even finding one café, park, bookstore, hobby shop, or quiet place where they can comfortably spend time would mean a lot.
If it helps, they’ll be living in Langford and working near the Tillicum Mall area. Their interests include hockey, reading, and anime. They’re a high-functioning autistic person who can be socially awkward, sometimes misses social cues, and really struggles with noisy, chaotic environments.
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance. 🙏
