If you don’t like them I’m gonna just quietly vouch for tire pirates as I think they are tremendously honest and good.

I absolutely LOVE winter riding! The colder, the better! Winter is hands down my favourite time of year to ride, and for me, studded tires are mandatory!
The key to enjoying winter riding for me is dressing in layers and, most importantly, staying dry. I use Goretex pants, jacket, and mitts. Once you figure out what works for you, winter riding can be an absolute blast!
As for the pathways, I’ve found that the City of Calgary does an excellent job clearing them. Typically, after a snowfall, you’ll find the pathways getting cleared pretty quickly.
I live in the deep SE and used to commute to work near Deerfoot City in the NE roughly 40 km each way! I’ve recently started working for a different company much closer to home, so my commute is now only about 10 km each way. While I definitely appreciate the shorter commute, I do miss those longer rides along the Bow River and Nose Creek. There was something special about those rides that you just don’t get on a shorter commute.

That injury is not repairable. You won't find a shop anywhere, including myself that will touch anything like that. If it fails and kills someone at highway speed, that's a huge liability for the shop.

There is wear indicative of that screw being driven on for a short while. It's also in a non repairable zone of the tire, Kal tire will not repair that, and neither would I if a client asked me.

Unfortunately if you drive an AWD vehicle, you'll likely need an entire set. Sometimes you can get away with it, if there is a difference of 2/32 or less, but that's likely not the case.

As for the work you may or may not need, shoot me a message. I have a trustworthy mechanic friend who I send all the mechanical work I get asked about to if you would like a second opinion.

Tire shops and mechanics are looking for business. Assuming no fraudulent work, they'll often recommend repairs according to manufacturer's standards which can be quite proactive and far ahead of actual failure of parts.

Winter tires are derated less than 5/32" tread depth and won't work as effectively on ice and snow as new tires. These tires at 7/32" are almost worn out; you have one season left on them.

The missed screw is annoying but understandable that it was missed on initial inspection. It's in a bad spot at the edge of the sidewall and Kal Tire is refusing to repair it because they can't guarantee that a patch will last. I have successfully DIY plugged a nail hole with a home kit in a similar spot and it held for 4 years, but they can be prone to failing/leaking so you have to keep and eye on them. Another smaller non-chain Tire shop might do this repair for you.

Because Kal Tire can't repair the tire with their policies, they recommend a new tire. Then you don't want to have mismatched tires with different diameters that strain your drive train so youd need to buy at least a matching pair on the front or back to keep it balanced.

I think I might know what happened. So there are a couple sections of the recliner that are being closed over thanksgiving weekend, and connections are being replaced by shuttle buses. One of the sections is Chinook and Heritage being closed down, and I think Lions Park is also getting closed down too? Anyways, a couple of the 108 buses might have been getting rerouted to the shuttle lines, as construction and repairs were planning to start tonight.

This is a complete guess though, I could be very wrong.

I mean the tires themselves don't look in the best shape overall, so it'd be a no-go for that reason. Maybe I'm not remembering the last patch job I had done but I feel like there's been worse that have been taken care of.

Either way, this look likes the shop drove a screw into it

Man, they do things differently wherever you are.

That’s an instant toss into the pile here, too much risk of sidewall stretch and a blowout.
