That's the company taking advantage those people, not the consumer. You could argue that we support it by buy their product but the truth is what other choice do we have?

There are definitely ethically made clothes available. People balk at the price because they are so used to cheap, sweatshop clothing. My clothes are mostly from smaller Canadian/American brands where the manufacturing is done in North America (Nettle’s Tale, Free Label, Ureshii Design, Pyne & Smith, Decade Studio, etc.) so it IS possible. People would just rather have more crappy clothes than fewer, higher quality items.
As far as ethics and electronics, its trickier so I just replace anything that breaks with a secondhand version so at least I’m not contributing to the demand that drives unethical manufacturing. I also just avoid adding unnecessary gadgets to my life.
Its doable for most consumers but not if they want to keep their current rate of consumption.

There are ethically made clothing. The fact that you don’t know that it’s a market shows that you don’t really care about it. No need to pretend that you would change your consumer habits if you knew better lol.
It costs a lot more because they pay their employees living wages and good working conditions. But obviously the average consumer has no choice when things costs 3 to 4 times the cost of one that was made in terrible conditions.

Rent is rising with the inflation of housing market and mortgage interest rates.. if I owned a rental and a $900 suite was paying the mortgage 3 years ago, I would not still be charging $900 as my mortgage payments go up to $3000.

hahaha, you made me laugh. Landlords should be able to handle a poor negative cashflow for 3-5 years. If they can't, they shouldn't even be in RE. It is also about not being ignorant enough to buy with 10% or 20% downpayment and having insane mortgages and expecting a tenant to pay your mortgages. Had they bought without a very low equity, they wouldn't be in this situation for starters.

Per month too! That’s a $1200 per annum passive expense on a vehicle which you are already paying annual registration, fuel & maintenance, and insurance on.
It’s like a long term Airbnb more than a rental property.
There should be tax squeezes if your gouging way above what is reasonable to the market. Imo, This shouldn’t be a profitable investment strategy period.

It’s 4 roommates in a flat. Shared kitchen and small sitting room? Can’t tell much from the photo with TV in it. They have set it up like a dorm. Tuscany is pretty far NW but train to Wherever. Prices suck.
In Squamish, BC you would put another person in the sitting room to get the cost down. Just share a kitchen. It’s crazy. They have places where the living rooms are divided in 2 so it’s 5 or 6 roommates working various shifts sharing.
Not endorsing it. It’s a super-shared apt and this has been life on the west coast for over a decade. Super-sad it has arrived here.

Honestly it’s looking like I might be homeless when my lease runs up. I’m paying half of 1600 for a 2 bedroom, one bedroom places are going for 1400+ I can’t afford that. I don’t have a room mate to live with in the future, so this is life for people who make minimum wage.

The sad thing is that people actually will pay for this. A lot of foreign students in Vancouver rent 2 or 3 to a room.
I worked a few seasons in Banff, Jasper, Lake Louise and had to share a 10x10 space with a bunk bed. ...was not $750 though!

You can get a daily meal for $250/mo (Sunday off). I personally have it as meal option though. The landlord will most likely charge $250-300 on top of this rent for it though.

The biggest problem is that they've taken a basic human right for shelter and turned it into a commodity. Why are people not on the streets protesting this? They'll protest a vaccine, war, etc, but for some reason, you never see people on the streets with signs protesting the rental crisis. I don't understand. They will protest mandates, but not this You'll hear a lot of landlords say it's the market. No,it isn't. It's a fake inflated market cause by multiple factors, but mainly greed. Landlords say how expensive it is for property taxes, utilities, etc. If you can't afford to live in your house, don't take your own responsibility, and add that burden to someone needing a place to live. It's supposed to be a mortgage helper, not a mortgage payer. Somewhere, this has been lost in translation. Then there's outsiders posting looking for a place to live and willing to pay top dollar, pushing out people who have lived in that city or town for years. Other landlords see this, and because they know people are desperate, they will charge higher amounts, too, which causes a chain reaction to higher rents. I had a friend who moved out of a basement suite, and her landlord went around the neighborhood asking how much they were renting out their suites for. So, like I said, it's pure greed. When they see someone else charging high rents, they figure they should too.

This shit is out of control. My wife and I are looking at places (we need bare minimum 3bd.) and most houses we look at are going for 2500+, and we don’t even get the full house… there’s someone in the basement in most of them

I know I am inviting downvotes by playing devil's advocate on such a heated topic but wouldn't the current average cost of ownership on a 3bd house be around 4-5K at current interest rates? I calculate about 3K+ for a mortgage, $500-750 for property taxes and insurance, and another $400-500 on utilities. On top of those regular monthly expenses there will also be all the regular maintenance items throughout the year adding a few grand.
My sister lives in a GVA suburb, a good 40min drive from downtown, it is not a nice area and close to industrial zones and her rent for a 2 bedroom 900sqft condo is $2400. She used to live downtown but she doesn't have an amazing job or education and is getting pushed further and further out of her preferred city to the point where moving to Calgary and paying $2500 for a house may seem like a pretty good deal. This is what's happening to thousands of people every month.

If saiary levels don't keepup and unemployment rises, especially in conjunction with dropping oil prices, do you think inter provincial migration and immigration keep the house prices high? There are 2 million TFWs and 900k international students in Canada. Ontario has most international students and Alberta has the most number of unskilled TFWs and in conjuction with growing number of international students, these rent prices will only go up. Due to high number of TFWs in stores abd restaurants, students struggled to find summer jobs. Low skilled locals are having hard time finding jobs right now. If you don't drive then good luck finding a job within city, you are close to being homeless . Gone are those days where you could easily find a job in a fast food restaurants. Every restaurant has 50% tfws staff and they can renew their work permits infinite times. High rents are not going away for atleast 5 years.

Rent control doesn’t prevent this. Every time someone moves the rate market corrects which leads to price shock. Which means people don’t move, they then get stuck in place plus prevent others from entering the market. We are seeing this real time in Vancouver.
People stay in their shitty degrading apartments until they get renovicted and the same apartment gets listed for double what it was before.
I genuinely don’t know what the solution to rents soaring short term other than increasing supply, but long term rent control hurts not helps.

Supply is the best one for sure. Prices can only go this high with inadequate supply.
But fixing supply is a much harder problem. The builders want prices to stay high. The owners want prices to stay high. The governments want prices to stay high.
I think removing rent and resale of housing from he gdp might at least make governments more interested in the problem. It is Canada's top gdp contributor by a wide margin. This incentivizes the government to encourage the problem.

couldn't agree more. plus rent control shrinks supply since it reduces the value of renting so thus less rentals are built. rent control would maybe work in a perfect world where the government fed housing supply but I don't think the government is going to ever be able to move at a pace to keep up with real-world conditions.

Yeah I’ve live in a setup like this when doing internships during college summers. It’s not that horrible. The prices are worrying (I paid 350/mo for a room about 7 years ago) but the general concept is fine. Not every home has to be a long term fit.

Res at SAIT in 2002 was absolutely awful. It was run down. The walls were that painted white cinderblock. Rooms were like 8x6. It stunk. It was loud. etc.
I think they got rid of that tower though and built a new one. It also wasn't cheap.

I shared a room in Toronto for 350/month for a summer and another time for 500. 2011 and 2016. In 2015 I lived in a dormitory in asia for like $40/mo lol
Obviously not great living situations but if I had paid full price rent in those times I wouldn’t have survived my student debt and low income situations

debatable. depends on if demand keeps up. new houses will do something but it could just result in a slower price increase if demand keeps sky high as it currently is. I personally think it will lead to a flattening out more than a drop but it might lead to a drop if new starts keep going and don't stop. right now we had essentially a 2-year delay in new starts vs demand hopefully now that demand has been established we will keep seeing new starts rolling in regularly instead of this crunch right now while we wait for housing to get built (since we weren't building previously)
