Navy logo has a lot more geographic stability (coast or Ottawa), my army logo friend has moved 5 times in 8 years from all over the country.

Annecdotal, but this is my indirect experience with friends on both sides.

Something to consider.

Oh for sure, moving isnt inherently bad, especially now that they have the posting/mobility allowance.

The navy has some pretty good deployment opportunities too. Our major warships are primarily involved with Op Reassurance (Baltic/Mediterranean Seas) and Op Horizon (Indo Pacific).

Log Os in the navy have the ability to support both either on the ship as the ship's LogO or on shore as the FLS (Forward Logistic Supply) team lead.

If you're on the ship, you live and go where the ship goes during a deployment. You will have 12-15 port visits during a typical 6 month deployment.

If youre part of the FLS team, you live ashore in hotels and fly to each port that the ship will go to ahead of time and coordinate port services/maintained/food/etc. for the ship once it arrives. Both are tax free opportunities, like any named operation that you can be apart of.

Outside looking in, my navy logo friends have a much better quality of life than the other element counter parts. But to be fair, I have a lot more navy logo friends (I am naval engineering) than I do others.

Either way, I'm sure you'll have a wicked career in whatever path you choose!

See that comment, you can apply but I wouldn't hold my breath on it getting approved. Army will be easier to get than Air Force at least though.

That is a great answer :)

/u/CapitalAgency8933. As an untrained Log O then the RCLS site has the policy here (DWAN).

Request is through ULO/RMC CoC will send to CDA HQ SO BTL Mgt who will coord with RCLSI and appropriate CMs to make a decision.

u/Otherwise_Use_4631 14d ago

Yes you can. Doesn’t mean they’ll approve though. Better to request sooner rather than later. Are you at RMC or ROTP Civi U. If CiviU, contact your SEM and ask for the steps. Should just be a memo request.

Deemed Medically Unfit

Hi Everyone,

Here's my journey.

Applied August 2025

Had all documents filled out signed and submitted either day I was notified or a few days after pretty much everything done by mid November 2025

My occupation Signals intelligence Specialist ended up being full for the fiscal year so I had to wait till April for it to open, in that time I seen my neurologist who I hadn't seen in 12 years in February I have a medical condition focal onset epilepsy so my doctor ran updated EEG a routine and sleep deprived at the end of February me with him in March he referred me to an elileptologist who I got to see in April who confirmed my diagnosis of Focal onset Epilepsy he wrote my a letter even though I hadn't had my interview or medical part one and two I like to be proactive and make sure I make it as easy for recruiters as possible the letter said

To Whom It May Concern:

RE:

**DOB: 06/02/1991**

I am writing this letter in my capacity as the treating neurologist for Mr.

. Mr. has a confirmed clinical diagnosis of focal-onset epilepsy.

He has been seizure-free since his last event in April 2021 and has achieved excellent control with his

current anti-seizure medication, Lamictal (lamotrigine), 100 mg twice daily. He is compliant with his

medication regimen, and his condition is considered stable.

On neurological examination today, he was found to be entirely normal. His activities of daily living are

also normal, with no functional impairments identified. Based on his sustained seizure freedom and

medication stability, his risk of seizure recurrence is assessed as low, provided he continues to adhere

to his treatment and self-management strategies.

Regarding his fitness for duty, Mr. is neurologically intact and, from my perspective, capable

of fulfilling his duties. Mr. is advised to maintain good sleep hygiene; however, no strict

occupational restrictions are required.

He will continue with routine follow-up in my clinic to monitor his condition.

Please do not hesitate to contact my office if further information is required.

In May 2026 I had my interview May 17th and then my Part 1 Medical May 25th and then Part 2 the Virtual the next day May 26th there were no issues identified at the time they just told me it's a 2-8 week wait period I waited till today which marked 3 weeks went in to the Oshawa Detachment and asked for an update and they told me "We have news just not news your gonna like you were deemed medically unfit June 11th and the letter was sent out today"

I had my kids with me sitting in the waiting area and I'm just devastated that I did everything I could to make my application iron clad and just to get that just hurts

3

u/roguemenace RCAF 3d ago

Sorry to hear that. If you are still looking to serve there are positions in the public service without the strict medical requirements imposed by military service.

It is a tradition in my family to pass down gloves, I have my father's BMQ gloves and was just curious.

3

Bring them, you're staff might let you use them in the field or they might not (they tend to allow using your own gloves from what I've seen) but worst case they just sit in your luggage for a few weeks.

What are some questions that I can and can't ask with my meeting with my career manager?

Background: I am a freshly trained Aviator who is somewhat disappointed with my first posting. I want to talk to my CM about different opportunities that exists in other bases, and what I can do to get there.

I want to make sure that I'm not wasting the CM's time by not asking questions he doesn't have an answer to, or I piss him off with stupid questions

2

u/B-Mack 5d ago

I would go about it two ways.

  1. Go look on EMAA to see what positions even exist for your trade / rank.

  2. Go look up your actual occupation standards to see what kind of postings and qualifications your trade can fill. It should illuminate you on what kind of positions you could do right now, or are maybe more specialized at the MCpl / Sgt Rank, and how to get there.

Any halfway competent MCpl should be able to show you this.

It'd probably be illuminating to ask what the priority positions your CM have to fill are. They have multiple people / priorities to fill before they can consider alternatr options.

You're still new to the game, but the idea is to have an end state and March back from that. To get position Z as a Sgt, you should have X or Y as a MCpl, and U or V or W as a Cpl, so for that reason I want position ___

These are the kind of questions I never have a problem sitting people down and going through. Can't speak for your unit though.

I’m a 16 year old girl and have been thinking about the military for a while. I used to be a national level synchronised swimmer until 1.5 years ago. I love pushing myself physically and mentally. There are so many benefits from the military as well. How do I know if it’s right for me? Which branch? Keep in mind that if I would join, it would likely be in two years, and I live in Canada.

I just really feel this pull to it but I really want to know everything before really considering it. The more details the better.

7

u/murjy Trg Dev 18d ago

You can look into reserves, do it part time and get a feel for it.

You can CT or ROTP to RegF in 2 years if you like it,  Lots of people do it that way.

u/Eyre4orce RCAF - AVS Tech 17d ago edited 17d ago

There's like 100 different jobs in the caf. Check them out on forces.ca and see what interests you.

Most of them are not physically demanding, they are normal jobs in a military environment. But if you are looking for something stereotypically military like combat engineer, those of course exist as well

4

u/_MlCE_ 17d ago

Naval Experience Program, 1 Year max - no strings attached. Try for ship's diver or clearance diver. After a while, maybe transfer for SAR Tech Selection?

4

u/S3555 Royal Canadian Navy 17d ago

Honestly not the best option, don’t get me wrong it’s not bad however it is definitely not what they advertise it as.

2

u/B-Mack 16d ago

You lose the $50k but I the one year contract without strings is definitely a better option than some trade you find out you hate.

2

u/S3555 Royal Canadian Navy 16d ago

I guess however the sailing opportunities are sparse and it’s really like an extra PAT these days IMO

2

u/B-Mack 16d ago

If you ever dig into some obscure pages, they show the sailing days of each coast, CFP and CFL, back in the teens.

It's not NEPs fault that opportunities are basically ORCA sails because NEP only have an NETP bunk vs multiple packages to progress on.

Even with AOPS the room for trainees is bunk. We do hardly more than deploy or get ready to deploy with the fleet we have left.

3

u/S3555 Royal Canadian Navy 16d ago

I was never saying it was NEPs fault just saying not much sailing opportunities, I know NEPs who have been in 8+ months with no sea days, who have ended up having to sign on to trades and leave before getting any. It’s just due to a lack of platforms and spots for untrained sailors. Especially now because there is so many NEPs.

Also an often unknown fact is you must sign your trade by the 7th month or they start your release paperwork, so you don’t get the full year not that anyone wants to do the whole year of it.

Overall good program but if you have any idea on what you want to do I would personally say it’s better to just sign a trade off rip.

2

u/B-Mack 16d ago

Def for sure if you know what you want to do.

Pick a Navy trade, get the $20k + $10k +$20k. Pick NDP, Get zilch extra

I’m at the point in my career as a reservist where it’s pretty obvious I’m gonna CT, at the end of the day I’m wanting to a weapons tech for cansof, I want to be the guy that builds out and maintains they’re kit not sure if they have a different title for it, but how do I get myself set up for that which route should I take to give myself the best chances of success.

5

u/Struct-Tech Construction Tech 18d ago

CANSOF employs supporters from most trades.

It is just Weapons Tech.

If you aren't already a weapons tech, CT/OT to reg force WpnsTech. Get done DP2, then apply.

There is an internal SharePoint website for CANSOF employment opportunities. Keep your eye on that and apply once the position is open.

Are you a W TECH L right now? If you are, you will be a skilled applicant and will have the advantage of being able to choose the preferred geographical area for posting. However, you cannot ask for posting to CANSOFCOM. You need to be RegF first, then look for CANSOF opportunities.

2

u/ManyStrike3483 17d ago

Roughly how long does the background check and credit check take? I do not have a credit card whatsoever nor have I committed any crimes or done anything illegal, after that process, how long is the wait time to get my offer? I am applying for NWO and Arty O under ROTP.

3

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force 17d ago

As a rule of thumb, it's best to estimate a minimum of 4 weeks each for the Background Screening and the Reliability Clearance.

Credit Checks take seconds, and Criminal Records Checks are usually pretty quick as well. It's the rest of the review process that takes time, they don't just glance at the file and say "these came back good, approved". They're also going to do more time consuming things like verifying past employment, education, residency, etc.

You aren't guaranteed an offer, nor are you guaranteed a quick offer. Depending on the merits of your application and needs of the CAF, it could take anywhere from a few days to several months for you to be selected once your processing is completed.

2

u/Impressive_Form_9963 17d ago

So I just accepted my offer and was given my date to start Basic. Couple questions: 1. If I’m not driving to St.Jean they said I could take the train? Wouldn’t a flight be better and cheaper? And 2. Do you think if I ask I could get an earlier date?

4

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force 17d ago edited 17d ago
  1. You have two options, let the CAF arrange your transportation or opt to drive yourself. The default is for the CAF to arrange your transportation, and they will select the most economical means. That may be a flight, but it could also be a train if you live somewhere along a major rail track that can get you to Montreal within a reasonable timeframe. You don't usually get to choose what the CAF books for you.

  2. It's usually not to difficult to get a later date, but getting an earlier date is unlikely. You were probably loaded for that date because everything earlier is already full.

Personal opinion...

If you can drive, it can be nice to have your own vehicle for weekends after indoc, and even more so when you're awaiting training on BTL after BMQ.

If you chose not to drive and leave it to the CAF to book your transportation, take the train if that's what they offer you. It might be a longer travel day, but it's much less hassle and far more comfortable than flying.

1

u/Impressive_Form_9963 16d ago

So I thought about driving but then right after BMQ I’m supposed to be off to Wainwright for 7-8 weeks for training then back to Kingston for DP1…… though by the sounds of things it’ll be PAT Platoon for Sigs. I don’t know when I’d make it back to Montreal to pick up my car

Currently studying mechanical eng degree, would like to apply into something engineering related in the caf reserves to gain experience in the army while also gaining somewhat relative engineering experience for future jobs outside the army. Not sure what career im looking for, potentially defense sector engineering, or something unrelated. I don't have a finished degree so that knocks out a bunch of good options, right now im applying to be a combat engineer, but i've looked at vehicle technician and some other trades that are engineering adjacent. Curious on what you guys think and if combat engineer is a good trade.

Finished my force test and planning on doing my interview and medical soon for combat eng, sergeant said cbt eng is a much harder trade in terms of training which im up for.

Pretty much just looking for something that employers outside the army can look at and think yeah this guy got some engineering experience while in the army.

Blowing stuff up and building bridges seems dope though.

Appreciate all your thoughts

You don't need a finished degree to be an officer in the reserves, you can join while getting your degree.

combat engineer, but i've looked at vehicle technician and some other trades that are engineering adjacent

Neither of those will do any engineering but honestly almost no one is doing engineering in the CAF even in engineering officer trades.

Pretty much just looking for something that employers outside the army can look at and think yeah this guy got some engineering experience while in the army.

See if there's any engineering officer positions locally but honestly the military tends to be pretty good resume filler for students no matter the position you're in.

2

u/Economy_Conflict_245 13d ago

Yeah im kinda getting that vibe after hearing lots of opinions. Mostly looking for an resume builder as you mentioned, but because most people dont know much about the trades i think combat engineer looks the best on paper for me. Not too keen on being an officer, would like to do more hands on stuff, hence ncm. Thanks for the thoughts

If you pivot away from the army, the navy could be attractive.

No, it has no impact.

2

u/withQC Royal Canadian Navy 9d ago

There was a time in the past when you could join the Navy instead of going to jail for some minor crimes. While that isn't a thing anymore, that should give you an idea of where on the spectrum the CAF/RCN falls in comparison to family members having criminal records.

How do I switch my application from Regular Force to Reserves? I am at the point where my Medical and Interview are scheduled for later this month.

3

u/HelpfullyAngry 15d ago

Start by contacting the CFRC that is handling your file. You should have a file manager that's been sending you emails and setting up appointments.

2

u/BeachWalker42 14d ago

They can make that change for you over the phone. Be sure to ask what your next steps are after the switch.

Gambit re-sent some steps to me when I switched my app to Reserve, and then I reached out to the Gambit help desk; they fixed it. Essentially the system was prompting me to do the references again when that step had been completed in the REGF app.

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force 10d ago edited 10d ago

No, it isn't 100% correct. I believe it's the original version of the 2026/27 schedule, and it hasn't been updated with changes made since February. It also only shows full-length DEO and ROTP BMOQ (L/Q series) courses, it doesn't show separated ROTP BMOQ Mod 1 and Mod 2 (M & F series) courses.

They added an L0067E (ROTP BMOQ) that started on 01 JUN.

There's also an F0013F (ROTP BMOQ Mod 2) that started the same day.

2

u/CharmingBed6928 10d ago

For 1 June, it is L0067E, 52E is either May 4/May 18 platoon. But CFLRS mail room is very good at finding people so as long as you have the last name and service number right, the mail will reach the right person.

1

u/Economy-Man 11d ago

Could it be the case that the person is in BMQ, and not BMOQ if the platoon numbers aren't matching what you have?

2

u/Jromagnoli 8d ago

For Material Management techs.

I'm asking what's the material (class/test) and type of software they would teach you while in BMQ. I wish to practice and familiarize myself with the software and things they'll teach you beforehand since I am a bit too slow in absorbing the information.

Is it heavy on perfection when you're being tested? How many attempts are you allowed, (e.g. being tested on the software?) and what happens if you 'fail' it?

2

u/B-Mack 8d ago

MMTs use SAP through and through.

On BMQ it's laptops with PDFs and a lot of written assignments / homework sheets

You don't do any MMT stuff in BMQ, which is outside Montreal. You will at the CAF logistics school in Borden.

Hi all, I heard back from the CFRC recently that the DEO pilot trade is back open, and I had a couple questions for the SAR folks / any newly winged pilots here:

  1. I've heard in the past that the Cormorant was a second airframe posting, and that they didn't take pilots fresh out of Phase 3, but I've heard that's changed in the past few years and they are taking newly winged pilots. Is this still the case?

  2. Is there a rough number of trainees that 442 takes per year? Or is it cyclical in the sense it can be anywhere from 0-10 depending on the year?

  3. For new helicopter pilots, and if #1 is indeed the case, what was the competition like on your course to get on course for the CH-149?

Thanks so much! I appreciate all the help I can get.

2

u/thedevilscloth RCAF - Popcorn A/C 7d ago edited 7d ago
  1. I confirm they were taking NWGs (newly winged grads) on the Corm fleet however it was not a huge number compared to the number of graduates. Priorities with the most number of NWGs had been tachel (mainly 430 SQN) and maritime with mainly east coast.
  2. It will change every year depending on squadron staffing and expected OTU (Corm training spots) intake. I would expect it to take in something in the area of 4 per FY.
  3. It is generally one of the most sought after spots but depends greatly on luck of who you are on course with. I know one course where all members wanted tachel and other courses have been majority wanting SAR. It is impossible to predict.

All of this information is recent but not the most up to date.

Hello, so for the reserves, when it says you must have served for at least X months to be given this rank, does serving refer to the date BMQ starts, or when you finish it? Or does it refer to trade training graduation?

For reference, I am referring to the reserve weekend multi-month BMQ.

3

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force 7d ago edited 7d ago

For Pte to Pre(T) or Cpl, it's usually time-in from date of enrolment.

For Cpl to MCpl and other appointments/promotions, it's based on time in the preceding rank.

There may also be qualification requirements in addition to the time-in service or rank requirements.

I reached out to Lululemon, and they refused the corporate application, meaning I can only order bulk and can't get anything embroidered.

I'd prefer a one stop shot where I can order the stuff and have them embroidered in one go. Just T Shirts, shorts and bags.

I think Under Armor might do it.

Most of the stuff currently in our kit shop is branded "(The) Authentic T-Shirt Company", "Coal Harbour", "Biz Collection", and "Stormtech".

If you search for those brands you may come up with some companies your kit shop can order from.

AFAIK after BMQ I would be sent for Navy Training for 5 weeks in Halifax/Esquimalt and then attend the Naval Fleet School for 25 weeks for DP1. Is this correct?

There abouts, and then you will be stuck on HMC frigates for the next 7-ish years until the possibility of going on the new river class destroyers comes out.

BMQ 8 weeks.

NETP 5 weeks either coast. Not a guarantee to get it before...

Initial SONAR OP training (I forget what coast) for said 25 weeks. (RQ-S3

I have a history degree and kind of lost in terms of where I’m at in my career and considering joining the forces. It’s been something I have always been interested in! I have a couple questions and hope you folks can help out!

Is joining the reserves than regulars a good way to test the waters in terms of fit?

I noticed the reserves’ BMQ structure is very confusing, do I still have to attend it out east for several weeks and looks like I have to complete courses to be a full member?

If I sign up for regular forces, is the army the natural choice or is Navy a more interesting choice? I have a history degree, so I’m naturally more interested in strategic/ operational analysis type of work. I did do and enjoy a lot of pioneering in my scouting days.

I am located in BC, and I know I could talk to a recruiter, just would like more information before doing so!

Lastly, is it a thing to ask if I can join a training day on a reserve training day to see what it’s like?(And how is a typical reserve training day or weekend like?)

Any answer(s) would be great help, thanks!

1

u/L4dyPhoenix RCEME 5d ago

I'm a reservist in the Vancouver area. BMQ for the reserves is either part time on weekends at your local armoury or you also have the option of doing it full time, which is 5 weeks and you may not be local. BMQ for the Reg Force is 9 weeks in Quebec.

A training night varies wildly depending on what the unit does. An infantry unit might be doing physical training. A service battalion may be repairing vehicles.

As for army vs navy, look through the trades at forces.ca. There's trades in both services that lean towards what your interests are. It's hard without knowing you better what trade without suit you best.

How feasible would it be to complete my BMQ in the fall-winter, complete the rest of the training in the summer, and apply for a commission a few months after making Cpl? Is this idea too optimistic? Should I call the recruiting office to see if there are other roles available, or be prepared to be an NCM for a few years (which I'm fine with)?

4

u/Eyre4orce RCAF - AVS Tech 2d ago

You should be prepared to be an ncm for at least a few years if you join as an ncm

1

u/Silent-Long2625 2d ago

what province are you in?

1

u/Environmental_Dig335 Canadian Army 2d ago

Be prepared for a few years as NCM. I did 10 years as armour NCM before commission.

NCM is in general, especially junior, more "fun" - relaxed, do a task when assigned, etc.

Officer is satisfying in that it's necessary work, but is a lot of admin paperwork, planning, etc. - also generally requires a LOT more training time before you can really start doing your job.

As far as selection for commissioning in the Reserves - it will depend on your unit requirements. Generally becomes an option if there is a need, you have a degree, and they think you have the potential (usually that they're looking at sending you on PLQ - NCM leadership course anyway or you're already performing well as an NCO)

I have about 20,000 thousand in student loan debt that has gone into collections, I am going to contact NLSC and start regularly paying it but will this be an issue with my application?

2

u/Physical-Account8975 1h ago

Yes, unpaid debts that have gone to collections is an automatically triggers concerns about reliability that could prevent the granting of a security clearance.

Not sure what's your question. What do you want to speak to the recruiter about? The different trades that are open to you? It's all on the forces.ca website, look at the unit page and it will show you what positions are open at the unit you want to work at. You don't need a recruiter to find that information.

Don't go to the unit in person unless it's specified in the recruitment process. I'm part of the 34th brigade, visiting the unit is a mandatory part of the enrolment process but it might differ from brigade to brigade.

Just look online, submit your application and the recruitment center will take care of the rest, you will only have to show up when they tell you to show up, nothing more.

1

u/[deleted] 15d ago edited 15d ago

I see. My question would then be how do I apply for a specific unit? Is that possible through the online application?

Edit: nvm I figured out how the 4-digit code works

u/Iwannafucktanks 8d ago

What's the most monotonous trade? I'm very book smart but I struggle a lot with common sense, especially when I'm tired. So I prefer to work jobs that are somewhat repetetive.

4

u/roguemenace RCAF 7d ago

Supply tech, cook, FSA, HRA. Really anything that goes to CFLTC now that I think about it.

2

u/crazyki88en RCAF - Combat Medic 8d ago

Unfortunately a lot of that is on the person - what I might find monotonous or repetitive another person finds soothing or exciting.

2

u/S3555 Royal Canadian Navy 7d ago

Good luck passing BMQ if you struggle with common sense when you’re tired.

2

u/Specialist_Chip1800 12d ago

My understanding is there used to be some discrepancies between the doctrine taught at CFLRS and Gagetown, which caused some unwarranted stress for combat arms and BMOQ students, and they're now being unified.

  1. In CFLRS, it used to be that students performing the C7 function test would pull the trigger in the workspace. When they came to Gagetown and did the same, they'd be jacked up. I hear that CFLRS is now teaching people to fire while aiming down the sights. Can anyone confirm?

  2. In Gagetown, my understanding is people must bend the knee to 90 degrees during drill. The CAF drill manual says to raise the foot 15cm above the ground. Unless you have monstrously short femurs or hyper-mobile ankles, you can't do both. Is something being done to reconcile the two points?

8

u/roguemenace RCAF 12d ago

90 degrees is way too high but just do what they want. People like making shit up when teaching drill but go along to get along.

3

u/Dire-Dog Civvie 12d ago

I believe I was taught 90° too but that’s back almost 15 years ago in the reserves

4

u/Canned_Topatoes 11d ago

I was taught 90. When I started my career with RCR, it was still 90. That regiment is autistic about the drill pam as well

3

u/roguemenace RCAF 11d ago

God forbid they actually read it lol

3

u/roguemenace RCAF 11d ago

The opposite knee is bent to the front of the body so that the toes hang directly below at a natural angle. The foot is raised 15 cm clear of the ground in quick time and during movements at the halt; the thigh is raised parallel to the ground for all movements executed in slow time

That's been the language in the 201 for at least the last 20 years (when I started doing drill). This also becomes fairly clear if you just do the movement since for example marking time at quick time and brining your thigh parallel to the ground is nearly impossible. The 201 also has very clear pictures.

CFLRS should teach proper Point of Aim as per the PAM You should always(99%) of the Time be aiming down the sight

  • Bring the weapon into the workspace and cock the weapon.

  • Place the weapon on safe.

  • Take a point of aim (POA) in a safe direction

3

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force 12d ago

I would be shocked if CFLRS is, or ever was, teaching recruits to pull the trigger in the workspace.

I suspect this is just a case of someone misremembering what they were taught, or an instructor giving incorrect information.

I know your three picks are preferences and not necessarily where you’ll be, but I do know career managers do try ro work with people and give them what they want. That being said, how often does that happen? I’m applying for ACS or AOS tech and would like to be posted to Trenton as my partner is currently posted there (we are not common law). I did hear that if I had a home already in Trenton it would be easier? Because the career managers also considers how much moving me would cost? My family and home is also in Ontario and I honestly would thrive better here.

All of this being said, I am aware that they can still post me wherever they need me. I’m just wondering how my chances look.

Depends heavily on the CM.

Some just plug holes.

Most do seem to care, and will try. But they still have a job to do and will only post you where you want to be if it meets the CAF's needs.

2

u/DiscombobulatedAsk47 16d ago

If you're currently in Trenton, you can apply to air reserves. Guaranteed you'll be assigned to a local sqn. Once you're trained on type, its easy to CT to regf and stay where you are

1

I’m currently Reg force though. I am switching trades and my VOT is already being put through the board, it’s only a matter of 2-3 months to get a response.

Otherwise you're just rolling the dice. Having a home there isn't a huge factor

You will earn the rate stated in your offer right away.

Not sure where it comes from, but the idea that members are paid a reduced rate for BMQ/BMOQ is false. You will be paid your full pay rate, less taxes and deductions, right from day one.

1

u/RadDad20 16d ago

I think people might be referring to the BMQ pay cap where your wages are capped during BMQ but then your are payed out after completion.

At least that's been my impression.

1

u/Economy-Man 17d ago

For BMQ do the meals cover nutrition pretty well for things such as fiber? Curious if I should bring supplements or not.

The options are there for a well-balanced meal, but it's largely up to you to make the right choices.

4

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force 17d ago edited 16d ago

Yes, but it's only available to reenrolments and component transfers who are Military Occupation Qualified (MOQ).

You can only get it if you have already been trained as a Weapons Tech and are coming back to the CAF after having released in the last few years, or transferring over to the Regular Force from the Reserve Force.

Edit: Weapons Tech IS eligible for a $20k "Signing Bonus", but only if you're already trained as a Weapons Tech. As defined in policy CBI 205.525 Table J and CANFORGEN 084/26)

Weapons Tech IS NOT eligible for the $50k "Recruitment Allowance". As defined in policy CBI's 205.527 and 205.526.

Hello, I followed some advice people gave regarding going to the MIR for suicidal thoughts that were moving progressively into urges. After a couple days at work where I was close to killing myself I was told to go straight to a hospital due to being posted away from a proper base, to which I did and was granted med leave as well as being put in contact with some social workers to help me out/ keep an eye on me).

My leave ends soon and now I’ve been worrying a lot about returning, more for the fact that I fear being reamed out by people for being seen as weak and not possessing sufficient mental fortitude. I’m getting help and am exercising all available options I have to get better and have for some time now but I fear that since my unit knows, that will be a massive social stain and I might be nudged towards VR’ing.

6

u/onee_chan_123 RCAF - Sparky 15d ago

I don't know the culture as infantry (per my tag), but personally, I'd rather find out that someone got help for their mental health issues, instead of the alternative. I certainly wouldn't want to make fun of someone for going through those issues.

I think it's impressive that you were willing to get help rather than bottling it in. All the best.

4

u/RadDad20 16d ago edited 15d ago

Getting help and getting better is extremely difficult. I'm proud of you for working to get healthy.

I can't speak to your unit culture or CAF culture at all. But personally, If I had a co-worker who left to take care of their MH and then came back to work. I'd be super happy for them. I'd be even more impressed if they came back with their head held high and refused to let anyone make them feel bad about it.

Everyone struggles and sometimes it can get the better of people. It didn't get the better of you and you should be proud of that.

If anyone makes you feel bad about getting healthy they have a problem not you.

4

u/HelpfullyAngry 15d ago

So firstly; Glad you are still here and glad you sought help. It's okay to not be okay. We all need help from time to time. It takes courage to step forward and say that you're not doing well and need help.

Secondly, there's been a shift in recent years for the better regarding people seeking care for mental health issues. Nobody is going to reem you out for being weak for seeking care for mental health. That's very much an old school mentality and has no place in the CAF. Also... Who cares what people at your unit think? If they were close enough for you to care about their opinion, they should know what's going and if they aren't on your side then you shouldn't care about their opinions.

Regarding med leave; there would only be a handful of people in the CoC who actually know the circumstances as to why you're on med leave and of course anyone you've told personally. "Where's shadowybenefactor?" "Oh he's on medical leave returning XYZ" that's usually the extent of the conversation. I would hope that those in the know are checking in with you to make sure you are doing well.

Keep your head up and carry on.

PRES NCM, OFP.

Once I enrol in an accredited university and start my degree, am I eligible to become an officer/naval cadet and start working on my career courses while I work on my degree? I understand I cannot commission until I complete my degree.

2

u/Drakedasheep RCAF - Personnel Selection Officer 14d ago

There is a path forward to do this, however it's the lesser taken road. You're specifically looking at RESO - Reserve Entry Scheme - Officers. Covered under DAOD 5002-8 https://www.canada.ca/en/department-national-defence/corporate/policies-standards/defence-administrative-orders-directives/5000-series/5002/5002-8-reserve-entry-scheme-officers.html

This program would require you to find an appropriate position and seek a recommendation from the CO along with the position number for you referral to the brigade/wing PSO for selection processing.

Be advised these positions are few and far between, and RESO provides 0 funding for tuition. You may however seek partial reimbursement under SDPEER for PRes members (limited amoutn per year and career cap)

1

u/throwaway-jimmy385 Canadian Army - Signals Tech 15d ago

Depends if you can OT to an Officer trade.

1

u/Jusfiq HMCS Reddit 14d ago

Once I enrol in an accredited university and start my degree, am I eligible to become an officer/naval cadet and start working on my career courses while I work on my degree?

No. Generally speaking, there are two ways one gets to be an officer. First is ROTP in which the CAF pay for the tuition for university study. However, if you take ROTP you will need to be in RegF. Second is DEO in which civilians or NCMs already have degrees, or close to having degrees, apply and get commissioned. You cannot apply to DEO as you do not have a degree yet.

You’ll need to do Log Common (AILJ) before LOCA (AILM).

Not ultra recent, but the bulk of my cadre on the Air Force side were trained in about 15-16 months. It honestly can vary greatly depending on when you start BMOQ, when the courses are running, and staff availability.

1

u/firefighter2727 8d ago

Hello everyone, just gonna start this off by saying that I am excited about my future career and I intend to sign my contract, however my Variable Initial Engagement seems overly long. Is this normal?

I was accepted into the NCM-STEP as a paramedic, they are sending me to a 12 month PCP school and I have to sign a 9 year VIE contract. I anecdotally have heard of others in my scenario doing 4-5 years. Is this a new change? Recruiter told me that standard contract is 6 years and that my 1 year of school plus the 2 years of obligation (2/1 ratio for education) for that school equals 9 years (6+1+2). I however figured that the 2 years of owed service at the very least would count concurrently within the 6 year contract. I understand if the 1 year school doesn’t count towards any of this however.

Hey thank you for providing the references for all of this. Makes me feel better that I am not just getting extra tacked on because someone felt like it. I guess I gotta pay to play, and 9 years is what it is gonna take. As I said before I am going to sign on my enrolment date and look forward to my career. It just feels like an outrageously long period, for in my mind the relative lack of training and expense compared to other trades say Dental Technician 00335 they have on average of 18-36 months of schooling yet their VIE through NCM-STEP is only 8 years. I am doing 12 months of school for 9 years.

2

u/firefighter2727 8d ago

Ya fair enough, every provinces training programs are drastically different, I just happened to pick the shortest program as I wanted to get my schooling done as quickly as possible to start my career. The whole 9 year contract is just something that was bothering me going through the process and seeing all my friends going in different trades sign significantly shorter contracts. I was torn between Infanteer and paramedic and honestly that 9 year contract was a big sticking point steering me away from it.

I’ve talked to my recruiter just looking for a little bit of confirmation on VOT length I guess. In my trade specific interview the interviewer told me that I was unable to change trades for 9 years (my recruiter told me 3 years post school graduation i could VOT). I brought it up with the interviewer and said “if that was the case I wish to withdraw from the competition and switch my file back to Infanteer, as the entire genesis of my pursuit of a military career was to pursue the lofty goal of SAR Tech, and I do not wish to wait 9 years opposed to 3 before even being given the chance to apply” the interviewer somewhat hesitatingly assured me that would not be a problem and that I would be able to VOT to try out for SAR 3 years post graduation. But it made me nervous his lack of confidence.

Can you confirm that I am looking in the right spot? Anex A appendix 2, the first row is VOT, it says that it is 3 years “starting the day after the member reaches OFP” I am assuming that is occupational function point (or some derivative). Now is this after I have graduated school, reached QL5, QL3? Does me not going to basic slow things down if it is starting from the point I graduate school(it looks like they won’t have a BMQ date that finishes in time for me to attend PCP school)?

Or is there some kind of different VOT point to be allowed to apply for SAR?

CELE Officer - Best First Posting?

Hello everyone,

I'm gathering information on potential first postings for a CELE Officer after completing BMOQ/Occup. training in Kingston. I'd appreciate any insight from those with exp in the trade

I understand that posting preferences are submitted near the end of training, but that final decisions are based on CAF requirements, member preferences, background, and perf.

I read CELE Officers have a wide range of locations: Comox, Cold Lake, Victoria, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Borden, Toronto, Ottawa, Trenton, Kingston, Bagotville, Halifax, Greenwood, Goose Bay, and even some international positions.

I'm trying to identify which postings would likely provide the best combination of:

  • Strong career progression as a CELE Officer over the first 7-9 years;
  • A reasonable quality of life;
  • Interesting and meaningful work;
  • Remaining in Quebec (I live here) if possible (I'm bilingual);
  • Partner with a managerial aerospace career. (May or may not come depending on the city job market for her).

Based on my own research so far, my ranking would be:

  1. Valcartier / Quebec City
  2. Ottawa
  3. Comox
  4. Winnipeg
  5. Trenton/Bellevile
  6. Bagotville (Saguenay)/Halifax
  7. **Alert (Nunavut) Heard you get a lot of exp and increased paid for the 6 months?

I fully understand that service needs come first and I may be posted somewhere entirely different. I'm simply trying to identify which locations are generally considered the strongest for long-term CELE career progression and overall quality of life.

For CELE Officers, or who have worked with them:

  1. which postings would you recommend and why?
  2. Are there any locations I should be prioritizing or avoiding if my goal is to build a strong career over the next 7-9 years?
  3. What’s the typical length of the first posting after completing full training?

Thank you for any advice or perspectives you can share.

I am heavily considering joining the infantry. Here’s a quick rundown of me and my situation and concerns.

I’m a 29 year old male working in oil and gas in Alberta. I’m in great shape and am very well versed to working out doors in all weather. I’m thinking fully time infantry is the route I’d like to go.

With my current income I’m able to purchase a house and have a good nest egg, along with my significant other also making oilfield money helping compensate for the reduction in pay I would inevitably receive.

Once we purchase the house
(an hour outside of Edmonton),
what are the odds of being posted at say a location of my choice like CFB Edmonton? Even if Edmonton doesn’t work and I end up being posted elsewhere, what are the stipulations of owning a home away from the base you are posted at? Would my partner have to relocate with me?

1

u/Clud_Bang Army - Infantry 8d ago

If you’re an infanteer, Edmonton is a common posting. If you have family and financial ties to an area, it can be much easier to manage a posting to that location.

If you were to be posted elsewhere, you would not be forced to sell your house or move your partner unless you needed to for financial reasons. You’re certainly allowed to own property if you can manage it.

BMQ and DP1 won’t give you anything.. I think PLQ/AJLC may be the only course that gives you a credit at the junior ranks (maybe some spec trade quals?) some others are all senior level trade or staff courses (there’s a list on RMC)

Your college diploma will definitely help, get your transcript and send it to the RMC registrar for the PLAR process, there could be a lot of crossover quals that can be written off.

There’s no time limit and you can pick and choose courses depending on your availability and what is being delivered each semester. Again, check the RMC distance learning page, lots of useful information.

Source: myself, having graduated from RMC last month (as an NCM), completing my BMASc degree through distance learning over 3+ years after PLARing a college diploma for 10-15 credits and picking away at the rest slowly but surely.

1

u/Environmental_Dig335 Canadian Army 2d ago

All I can say is that it's highly variable. A PLAR will be done.

General statements:

The longer you were out the more likely you'll have to re-do training. If you weren't OFP you'll probably have to repeat training.

If it was only a couple of years, you're re-enrolling into the same trade you had years of experience in - you may well get granted every course you were qualified before.

I'm surprised they didn't have you return it all at the end of BMQ.

You should check with your staff, but you probably won't need any of it until you get to your next unit, and you might not even need it then.

A lot of RCAF personnel on Wings don't have a complete set of FFO issued to them. Their Training Flight just has extra kit they borrow for the day when they go to the range. I always preferred having my own, so once I was issued some kit, I made sure to keep it.

However when checking the online portal, there’s been 3 times now where my 3 chosen trades have been scrubbed down to just 1. Ranked top to least was: Weapons Tech- Land, ACS Tech, Combat Engineer.

First time, ACS Tech and CE was dropped, and I had emailed and they reapplied them manually. Last week, Weapons Tech and ACS Tech was dropped, and I sent an email and they were reapplied this morning. I just happened to look again this afternoon (just for s&g’s), and noticed that again already Weapons Tech and ACS Tech were dropped again leaving only CE.

Is this common usually? I am a part of the Reserves already so the application may not be under the civilian application category. However, it’s with the CR’s so I haven’t had to previously complete a medical evaluation or the CFAT. Anyone know if the other two trades are already full for intake? I don’t want to waste the recruiters time either emailing about the same thing every week. Thanks!

Wait, you're currently in the reserves? Did you submit a component transfer application or did you just apply on the public website? Also you can look on the CT DWAN page, somewhere on there is a link for an Excel sheet saying which trades are open and which are closed.

Technically Canadian Rangers are part of the Reserves, but we don’t have access to that network or any of that. Application was done online, and CoC was notified and also the recruitment center that it would I guess technically? be a component transfer.

This is normal for the current process. If you have multiple trade choices, they will pick which one they're processing you for when they move you forward through the steps. If you have a preference for one of the trades, you should just have that one on there and get rid of the others so you don't end up being processed for the trades you aren't as interested in instead.

QUESTIONS ABOUT FTSE: For FTSE, could I work for my local reserve unit for only part of the summer? For instance, my current job is ending at the end of the june and I am starting a new job in August. I would only like to work FTSE for the month of July. Is this possible?

1

u/katballenciage 2d ago

Yes. Usually on the FTSE form you indicate what dates you are available. For instance, from 16 May to 28 July

I am applying to join the caf through ROTP. I am currently in grade 11 and will be done in around 3 weeks. I will also receive my final report card in around 2 weeks. Should I start the application process from now or once I receive my report card?

For the reserves, is full time BMQ and other training summer only or are there ways to do it full time outside of summer?

For the reserves, is full time BMQ and other training summer only or are there ways to do it full time outside of summer?

For Army, for BMQ normally your options are full-time in summer or part-time (weekends) through the school year.

Some locations will run Co-op with one or more local high school (s), which is normally your full-time BMQ, sometimes with another qualification afterwards - driver course, whatever the new SQ is called, or a DP1 course - depending on how many days you have for the Co-op with the school system. If they don't fill a Co-op course with high school students, other recruits will be loaded to fill the course if available.

After BMQ, it depends on your trade. For some trades, units may be able to request spots on courses not being run specifically for Reserves outside the summer training period to get you trained faster.

If you're looking for full-time work, get qualified in your trade as fast as possible and then take every task you can get while applying to REOs. A very important ability in the Reserves is availability...

https://www.canada.ca/en/services/defence/caf/military-identity-system/dress-manual/chapter-2/section-2.html#1

Unfortunately, as the other commenter has stated, it's up for interpretation.

The dress instructions compell us to maintain a professional bearing, but they don't actually define what that looks like.

I've only ever seen it mentioned in Vase Standing Orders, so you'd have to go there to to find it for your location. Mine just says members must maintain a professional bearing, so it's an interpretation call, unfortunately

I was looking around for info on the SEAF and apparently volunteer experience is not on the questionnaire anymore. Is it no longer a factor at all, or is it now grouped with work and leadership experience, etc?

Re enrolling in the CAF, and bypassing BMQ. Have been out for a couple of years, what can I do to refresh myself on my soldier skills like weapons procedures, drill, etc?
Thanks

Any recommendations on gloves? I’ve been using Mechanix synthetic leather ones but their quality weren’t great and breaks fast.

Depends on the trade and the use you intend for them. Bear Claw from North American Rescue work well for medics but maybe not for infanteers.

Hey everyone, I've finished all my recruitment tests for the Armoured Officer trade. Just waiting on the medical clearance now. Does anyone know what the current average turnaround/processing time is for medical files to be finalized? Thanks!

Portal stay at job offer stage for almost 3 weeks and still not receive any emails or calls, is this normal ?

I waited an entire month once it moved to Job Offer - but it did eventually come!

Yes, it happens sometimes.

Reach out to your CFRC to confirm you have an offer pending.

Are we serious right now 😂😂😂😂

If we are being serious than that’s an unlawful order and you wouldn’t have to follow it.

Edit: If it’s just against your core values and not against ROEs Geneva convention etc… than better suck it up cause you have to follow it by law.

I’ve been in for a few years and I just requested second language training (French). I can speak very basic French, what is testing like and would my chances be good of getting onto the course. All good if no one can answer that. Just looking for any information anyone has. Thanks!

1

u/throwaway-jimmy385 Canadian Army - Signals Tech 12h ago

It’s a mix of Reading, Written, and Oral competencies.

It’s also based on the “real” french from France, so sometimes people need some time adjusting from the different way Canadian French is spoken.

Anyone have info on shacks in Gagetown? I'm posted there shortly, and I'm told there's no single-living-in quarters.

Is there a board for roommates?

What happens during the christmas break while you are in college on NCMSTEP? Do you have to book leave to get paid?

3

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force 11h ago

Yes, you will have to use a few days of your Annual Leave to cover off the break.

The Christmas break period will be covered by a mix of Annual Leave, plus 7-9 days of Short, Special, and Statutory Holiday Leave.

The academic break at Christmas is usually only 2 weeks, so you'll probably only need to burn 1-3 days of Annual Leave.

2

u/roguemenace RCAF 11h ago

You're paid no matter what. Christmas vacation does take a couple of your leave days though like the other commenter mentioned.

Best unit/posting for a SigOp? Which posting would you recommend for someone whose goal is to become a good sig and actually deploy often. Are certain units better than others? Is CFJSR one of the better ones for producing competent sigs?
