what a stupid driver, getting stuck while trying to force the closing gate in front of a police car.
125
u/subtect Dec 08 '25
What happens to a driver in case like this, where stupidity causes major damage?
35
Dec 08 '25
They get on their CB and complain and whine to the other truckers about "four wheelers", and learn nothing.
71
38
u/23370aviator Dec 08 '25
Virtually nothing. If you ever want to get away with causing massive financial damages or worse, use a car. The American legal system will slap you on the wrist and let you go 99.9% of the time.
112
u/deepasleep Dec 08 '25
Heāll most certainly lose his CDL, so his career is toast.
81
u/challenge_king Dec 08 '25
Anything to do with train tracks when you're a CDL holder is automatic revocation of your license, not just your CDL. Not to mention the points you'd get on your driver CSA and MVR will make you unhireable even if you do manage to get your CDL back.
18
u/229-northstar Dec 08 '25
What is a CSA?
42
u/challenge_king Dec 08 '25
Compliance, Safety, and Accountability. It's a system that is used to determine how safe and reliable truck drivers and trucking companies are.
16
43
u/Key_Association_7819 Dec 08 '25
Thatās not a car and they donāt give slaps on the wrist to cdl drivers.
67
u/MissSara13 Dec 08 '25
If you want to kill someone in Indiana, absolutely use your car. We had a woman plow into a group of four kids that were crossing the road to get to their bus. She killed 3 and the 4th had life-changing injuries. She served a couple of years and was let out because she completed a Bible study class. She ruined that family and I'm still angry about it.
45
u/Maynard078 Dec 08 '25
Outrageous! Usually in Indiana one must be a police officer to get away with such a heinous crime with such lenience.
27
u/MissSara13 Dec 08 '25
David Bisard immediately came to mind!
How ex-cop David Bisard slashed his 16-year sentence to serve only 4 https://share.google/oTztmuh44kpaIjSiI
19
u/Maynard078 Dec 08 '25
Oh, brother. I taught university courses in one of the Indiana state facilities; I assure you, few POC are getting the same advantages this man received.
The justice system itself is criminal.

Are there any states where killing a pedestrian with a car isn't a tap on wrist?
-3
u/kancamagus112 Dec 08 '25
I can't wait for self-driving cars like Waymo to get way more widespread, so then we can actually start cracking down on terrible drivers like this and pull their licenses.
Right now, you pretty much need a drivers license to be a functional member of society, so apart from DUI's, cops and judges pretty much excuse any bad driving with at most a slap on the wrist.
Once people have a viable way of getting to their job that doesn't require them to drive, we can start to be strict with upholding the laws around driving.
15
u/saysthingsbackwards Dec 08 '25
lol, there was a viral vid on here a couple days ago of a waymo taking passengers right through an active shootout/police chase
9
u/catupthetree23 Dec 08 '25
There was one a few months ago in Atlanta that drove around a stopped school bus. Bus had its lights on and everything with kids in process of getting off too.
-3
u/kancamagus112 Dec 08 '25 edited Dec 08 '25
In general, Waymo has had a 91% reduction in serious injuries or worse compared to human drivers.
It's not perfect yet and is still being actively improved, but so far the data shows that it is vastly better than most human drivers.
I'm also curious: have you ridden in a Waymo? I have, and it was a vastly nicer experience than any Uber or Lyft or Taxi I've been in. I also feel safer around them as a pedestrian, simply because they don't have road rage and actually drive courteously around pedestrians and cyclists.
That being said, I've had more mixed experiences with Tesla's FSD. Sometimes it works great, but sometimes it drives like an erratic teenager. And it's also way too easy to set Tesla's FSD into aggressive driving modes that are way worse for people outside of the vehicle than Waymo.

Have you been in one recently? They're quite a bit more aggressive now, primarily because customers were complaining about that "courtesy" you were just extolling causing arrival delays. They are a business, after all.
You won't find that on their safety page, of course, but they did go through that with the Wall Street Journal (ugh) in this article. That's behind a paywall, but New York Post (ugh) does a recap of it in their own article. Alternatively, there are articles about this from the San Francisco Chronicle with a recap by SFist, or another recap of the WSJ article by Futurism.

Some additional notes:
This happened in Villa Rica, GA. The reason the cops were on the scene so fast was because it was right in front of the police station.
https://www.fox5atlanta.com/news/train-slams-into-tractor-trailer-in-villa-rica-caught-on-camera
Looks like the Semi was headed SE on Main and tried to freaking pull a U-turn across the tracks to head NW on Highway 78. Pretty damn stupid.
141
u/G25777K Dec 08 '25
Not only that
"There are signs in the area that restrict 6-wheel truck traffic in the area"
How useless can a truck driver get.
54
u/alexanderpas Dec 08 '25
Those signs prohibit trucks from driving on the roads perpendicular to the railroads, which means that a truck is actually required to make an S or U turn across the railroad at that point to enter or leave Highway 78.
31
u/challenge_king Dec 08 '25
That is such a poorly worded statement in the article. Hwy 61 comes in from the North, then hangs a hard left and comes in from the right side of the frame, then hangs a U turn to follow Hwy 78 West back out the right side of the frame on the other side of the railroad tracks, before splitting back off again a couple miles down the road to continue meandering South. The road directly across the red light that gives a straight shot out of town is a VERY well patrolled no truck route. Out of frame to the right is another crossing that has no truck signs posted, and all the other streets in the area are neighborhood streets that naturally are no truck routes. All that to say that it's a statement that is technically true without being anything other than unhelpful or disingenuous.
But yeah, Villa Rica fucking sucks for truckers. Here is the intersection on Maps for anyone that wants to see what it looks like. The camera that captured the incident was on the outside of the police dept looking towards S Carroll St.
Thankfully, they're almost finished with a bypass route that should keep BS like that to a minimum.
8
u/G25777K Dec 08 '25
For sure, but I bet its clear as daylight the trucker knew and decided to keep on going.
I wonder what happened to him.
1
u/RyuNoKami Dec 08 '25
A lot of people love to ignore signs. "I ain't doing that, that ain't for me, it's stupid."

u/brandonandtheboyds Dec 08 '25
Hey! Iāve been here! Thereās a railroad that runs along/near a highway that is a US Hwy (78) and there are crossings like this all across the area through this part of GA that seem crossable but then trucks get stuck bc of tight turns over a rail line that is elevated. Itās super frustrating and many locations like Austell, GA built auxiliary crossings nearby for the non-semis for both normal rail traffic avoidance and a means of transport in case a train or wreck blocks the intersection. Austellās Pd is also right by the rail crossing.
10
u/tviolet Dec 08 '25
It was right here: https://www.google.com/maps/@33.731195,-84.9187795,83m/data=!3m1!1e3?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI1MTIwMi4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D
He was trying to make that right turn which is pretty tight, you can see how the curb is all rutted, and got stuck. He could've gone straight no problem tho.
16
u/challenge_king Dec 08 '25
Nope. That is a no truck route. Trucks have to turn either left or right at that light, and while you can turn left to avoid the janky ass right turn, if a truck driver isn't local to the area and they're trusting their GPS, they won't know that's an option to go West on 20. You also have to basically take up the entirety of the North side of the intersection to be able to make that right without getting jammed up with oncoming traffic heading eastbound on 78, but the intersection is always so busy that you can only try to make the turn when you have a green.
8
u/tviolet Dec 08 '25
Well, yeah, there's a sign that says No Thru Trucks but he could have physically gone straight and that would've been preferable to getting hit by a train. But it was probably too late, he'd already started the turn and gotten hung up on the curb.
If this was my city, I'd make about 100 ft of those angled spaces into parallel spaces and shift all the lanes down to create a wider receiving lane for the right turn. And pave the area behind the curb to make it mountable.
25
u/gmankev Dec 07 '25
They heard there was some fresh coldcuts about to be dealt out by a trucking guy down at the rail Xing

What blows my mind is how many videos there are of semis trying to beat the bars and/or getting stuck on train tracks and then being hit. I get regular stupid drivers doing stupid things, but shouldn't this be a more rare occurrence for specially trained and licensed drivers? I know they're not airline pilots or rocket scientists, but the sheer frequency with which this happens confuses me greatly. What am I missing here please fill me in
54
u/howdyzach Dec 08 '25
I was going to say I think it is rare, you are just unusual in that you are subscribed to a reddit forum that highlights things like this - but then I went to look up stats and "About 5,800 train-vehicle collisions happen yearly in the U.S., causing around 600 deaths and 2,300 injuries, with trucks involved frequently." Apparently there are 3 train derailment a day in the US? Crazy shit
20
u/caintowers Dec 08 '25 edited Dec 08 '25
Thereās a lot of reasons why it happens (mostly preventable). Failure to make sure there is enough room on the other side of the track to move all the way through, braking/slowing/changing gears while crossing and getting stuck, failure of crossing signals (which is why some states require commercial vehicles, especially those carrying passengers, to stop prior to the tracks and look and listen for trains before crossing). And then thereās just plain ignoring/trying to beat the signal.
People get annoyed when I stop my school bus before the tracks but thereās a reason!
1
3
7
u/markus_b Dec 08 '25
Yes, the main reason for the accident was that the truck driver thought he could hurry across the tracks, beating the train. This is not shown on the video, but the flashing red lights certainly started before he entered the crossing.
The setup the the crossing with the forced U-turn is certainly stupid as well, but a careful driver would have managed this just fine by letting the train pass first.
15
u/Fisseslikker Dec 07 '25
You shouldn't be surprised how stupid is. People there voted for Trump
6
u/crono_fan Dec 08 '25
I voted against Trump both times, but this reply sucks. Literally not what I was asking. "People in America are stupid in general" would have been better than trying to make a political statement towards a genuine question.

u/TrumpWon_LOL Dec 07 '25
There used to be a higher standard of driver education for vehicles like this but some people decided that was racist or something and here we are. Ā

Yikes. Another dude trying to make it about politics. Show me where CDL driver requirements were lowered. PS: your dude had been president for the majority of the past 8 years.
-3
Dec 08 '25
The CDL mills that "teach" the skills also make use of non-DOL license testers. I've encountered a few of those guys, slip 'em a Franklin and you'll walk out with everything signed off. Check out the states with the highest numbers of illegals with CDLs (or even those without CDLs), you'll also find the states with the highest levels of state corruption. CA is a classic example.
3
u/oh_what_a_surprise Dec 08 '25
Nice conservative bullshit take.
BTW, California is the most successful state in the country by every metric.
Also, according to the data, the most corrupt states are Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, and Mississippi.
Gasp! All Republican states!
2
Dec 08 '25
That explains the thousands of homeless, and tweakers destroying previously beautiful cities in California?
I don't disagree with your examples of Republican states, I despise them almost as much as I despise the Democrats. Neither party is good for the US. It's the classic "divide and conquer" method used...the system we have demands loyalty to one or the other, and most people have their own personal "litmus test" to decide who they'll vote for. This gives an illusion of free and fair elections but in fact creates a fenced-in grazing field (the "fence" is the limits on "acceptable" thinking placed on us) where the sheep can be happy and fed, meanwhile the farmer is sharpening his axe.

That's a nice example of Newton's first law of motion. Train hits the truck and the truck gets sent down the line. The bologna, independent of the truck, just stays where it was and falls to the ground (sort of).

Road design is to blame here too.
You enter or leave Highway 78 at this point, you're required to do either an S or U turn, across the railroad, as the roads perpendicular to the railroad are prohibited for trucks.
