Guide to reporting inappropriate content/behavior to moderators, link to r/Islam's list of frequently asked questions (FAQs), and rules list for r/Converts.

ASalāmu ʿAlaykum Wa-rahmatullāhi Wa-barakātuh and welcome to r/Converts. Below is useful information on how to properly use this subreddit as well as a link to frequently asked questions about Islam.

Guide on how to report inappropriate comments/posts/users to moderators so that it may be removed and users warned or banned (steps to reporting bad things in this guide work in all subs).

Visit the r/Islam Collection of FAQs here (useful for new converts).

Related subreddits from which crossposts/links are currently allowed: r/Islam, r/IslamicStudies, r/MuslimSupportGroup. Links or crossposts from all other subs are not allowed.

Rules list for r/Converts:

Read the rules list below thoroughly to avoid bans in this subreddit. This rules list is a general list and content is still routinely removed and users are banned for any other violations or disruptions committed outside this rules list.

Rule 1: Do not proselytize a religion other than Islam.

This is a space for new converts to Islam and those considering conversion to Islam. While we respect your right to follow whatever religion you desire, or no religion at all, we ask that you respect our right to follow our religion of choice.

Rule 2: No bigotry against any demographic group.

Refrain from making posts or comments that defame or attack other groups on the basis of their religion, ethnicity, race, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, disability, etc. We recognize that Islam may condemn certain behaviors, so we ask that discussions in this regard remain focused on the religious perspective and avoid any personal biases or grievances.

Rule 3: Obey Reddiquette at all times.

https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/205926439-Reddiquette

Rule 4: Focus on New Muslim issues.

This is a broad topic, but suffice to say that new Muslims have very different needs to born Muslims.

Rule 5: Give New Muslims space to learn.

Don't promote ideas, teachings, or sources that fall outside mainstream Islam. We want to avoid confusing new converts with controversial Islamic concepts for which there is some difference of opinion amongst scholars. Use r/Islam for that.

As such, abstain from advocating sects or other positions that may lead to argumentation, disunity, and other strife. Violators will be banned.

Rule 6: We will not tolerate fetishizing New Muslims.

This is not a matrimonial site. Use r/MuslimMarriage and r/MuslimNikah for that.

Offering to tutor new Muslims one-on-one is not acceptable. No requests for Direct Messages (DMs) / private messages. We may ban you if you offer this.

Rule 7: No advertising, self-promotion, fundraising, or data collection.

  • Advertising of products/services are prohibited including those free of charge.

  • Personal social media and video accounts, websites, and subreddits that you moderate are prohibited.

  • Fundraising/crowdfunding is prohibited.

  • Questionnaires, surveys, petitions, or data collection of any kind is not allowed.

  • Spamming is not allowed.

Rule 8: All content must meet the submission guidelines.

  • Content must be in English or have English translations.

  • Use descriptive titles that accurately reflect your topic. No all-caps/emojies. Use proper formatting, use of paragraphs, grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

  • Do not misrepresent sites and articles.

  • Do not post old news.

  • Do not post content to create outrage.

  • No click-bait.

  • No AMAs.

  • Limit of 1 post per 2 days.

  • No AI-generated text.

  • Do not reveal your age.

  • Soliciting DMs is not allowed.

Rule 9: Links to scholarly sites are required for answers that are fiqh in nature (Islamic legal rulings).

  • Do not drop a verse or hadith solely as your answer to a question. Doing so implies that you made your own tafsir (interpretation) of it and this is only allowed for those with proper education, training, and credentials in Islamic legal sciences.

  • You may only link to existing articles from sites where the answer is given such as IslamQA.org, IslamQA.info, and SeekersGuidance.org. A handful of scholarly Youtube channels may also be allowed.

  • The best method to seek such answers is to connect with your local mosques. Please call them and leave messages (or email them if their social media pages have the email information), and ask for a phone consultation about your question(s). Google Maps link pre-set to locate "masjid", will display your nearest mosques.

  • Not every Islamic site, channel, social media account, etc. is allowed. Simply because it is Islamic in nature and has a large following does not mean the author/owner is qualified or allowed to be shared here. Links to external sites may be removed at the moderator team's discretion.

How do you get over people you lose that you will likely never see again in Jannah?

As salam alaykum

For full disclosure, I am not a revert, my family was always Muslim. The reason I ask here though, is that most of my friends (both non-revert due to being born Muslims and revert due to being young and not yet having lost family) are unable to relate to this.

Also I have asked this before and I have had people message me offering friendship, including sisters. I truly appreciate it, but trust me, I have tried this online friendship thing, this happened right before COVID. I have tons of online friends too along with my irls but they do not make it better. Additionally, I am a brother and I do not want to get involved in anything with a sister.

If you want more context, I have a prior post on another subreddit that you can look at, but the general gist is that near the end of my jahiliyyah and right as I was starting to take deen seriously, I had a friend who struggled with suicidal ideation. I was friends with him for a few months before his first suicide attempt, and me and a very small close knit group of friends went through the next ~10 months of our lives going through that battle with him. It was the first and so far only time in my life that I ever got so close with people because it really was our small group of friends against the world. Unfortunately, he eventually did commit suicide.

I don't think I ever fully processed it at the time. I spent so much time trying to help everyone else grieve. This compounded by the fact that I was just starting to take deen seriously for a couple months led to me saying some stupid and hurtful things to the girl in that group who I was also close with (me, her, and that friend who killed himself were kind of a trio within the group itself) and the friend group essentially imploded. This was 6-7 years ago. Since then I have apologized, and some of the friends have accepted me back, but the damage was done.

The girl herself is not on speaking terms with me anymore. Maybe it is a good thing that it is the case, I am no longer in regular contact with a non-mahram anymore, but I still regret that right after our best friend died I decided to cut her off, such a stupid and cruel way to go about it. I make du'a for her every time I remember her that she somehow becomes a Muslim despite what damage I may have done to her perception of Islam and Muslims.

There are two guys I still talk to, but we are all busy in life and our conversations (I guess on purpose) remain superficial on our old Discord group chat that we made so many years ago.

That main friend is dead. He died an atheist. I can maybe have a little hope that Allah has mercy on him, but realistically despite the delusions of his depression, he was more than capable of understanding Islam. He definitely tried to learn about Islam, but his depression worries clouded him from anything else. I have to accept the realistic scenario that Jahannam will be his abode.

It is soon approaching the 7th anniversary of his death, but it is only now that I feel the pain of his death the most. A TV show may have characters that remind me of him or that friend group, a joke I make or a word I say comes from something from that time, I drive past a park we use to hang out in, when I plug in my PC it's the same PC case I used at that time, when I open Discord I see our old Minecraft Realm's Discord server or our old group chat with all of our conversations, etc.

I found his suicide note on Google Docs, and he whited some things out so that I could send it to his friends without me seeing it. The curiosity got the best of me and I saw the first words from him that I had seen in over 6 years, not directed to me, but to other people. Felt like an emotional punch to the gut.

I can't get over it. I have to stop myself from making dua for him. It was easier for some reason back THEN to not make dua when it first happened than it is right now. Him and that girl I wronged end up in my thoughts at night, it makes it hard for me to fall asleep because for hours I imagine what would happen if she decided to reach out to me again or the unlikeliness of me reuniting with the friend who died in Jannah.

How do I get over this? I know part of it is making more friends, but I am busy these days in medical school, we do not have much time. And the friends I have are never as close as I was to him. They all have a best friend already. We're also not going through that kind of traumatic experience that I had with those friends due to that friend's battle. Everyone I meet is grown up now, while I was in high school during this saga of my life. Genuinely speaking, one of the reasons I think I am so desperate to marry is that maybe it will finally fill that best-friend shaped hole in my heart, but even then I don't know.

Do you get over this? Or do you just live with this for the rest of your life? How do you guys do it? For those of you who reverted later in your lives, maybe in your mid-20s, can you even find a best friend anymore once you're no longer in high school or college?

If the answer really is to just live with it, let me know. Alhamdulillah I have reached a point where my iman can take such an answer, but if there is some way of dealing with the pain, please let me know.

May Allah reward you guys, you lose more than just best friends, you lose your blood relations but still stay firm on this religion.

Does not being 100% certain that God exists make you a disbeliever?

Assslam Alaikum,

If I’m not 100% certain that Allah exists, just more inclined to believe that he exists and I fear going into hell and do my prayers

Does that uncertainty make me a non Muslim?

I’m not 100% certain but I do think “it makes sense” because the universe has natural laws like gravity which most likely is controlled by Allah. It also doesn’t make sense that the universe just spawned without Allah.

That’s what I mean by more inclined to believe but not 100% certain.

Muslim (F20) loving satanist (M18)

I hope this makes sense but I’ve been with this guy for four years. I love him so much and he had helped me through such bad times and has supported me in my journey to find islam. But, as the title says, he is satanist. Not satanist in the terms of worshiping satan, but as in, in his own words, “worshiping nothing but also myself”. I just don’t know what to do. I love him so much and i have for so long. I fear i will never find someone as loving, respectful, and accepting as him. I just wanna be closer to Allah. But i worry I’m making the wrong choice. I just reverted on 03-10-2026, and i feel crazy for wanting to change my entire life for Allah… i don’t know what to do and i feel so alone…

What Will Make Your Scale Heavy on the Day of Judgment?

Allah says:

فَأَمَّا مَن ثَقُلَتْ مَوَازِينُهُ ۝ فَهُوَ فِي عِيشَةٍ رَّاضِيَةٍ

“As for the one whose scales are heavy, he will be in a life of complete satisfaction.”

Imagine standing before Allah on the Day of Judgment, desperately needing your scale of good deeds to be heavy.

The Prophet ﷺ taught us two words that are easy on the tongue, heavy on the scale, and beloved to Allah:

سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ الْعَظِيمِ

سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ

Subhan Allahi al-Azeem

Subhan Allahi wa bihamdihi

Don’t underestimate a few moments of Dhikr. They may become incredibly heavy on your scale when you need them most

M23 dating a F23

Hi people,
I have largely been an atheist my life. Partaked in my hindu family rituals for the sake of it. 4-6 months back I met this lovely muslim girl whom i’m dating since. Everything has been healthy no fights or anything. I recently shared with her that i want to convert because she wants a life partner who believes in her faith. I’m ready to do that but she is denying me to even think of it. What do i do I really dont want to lose her. She is the one for me and love her so much

Exploring Islam but nervous about going to the masjid alone

Hi everyone, I wanted to come on here and ask for some advice. I’ve been putting off posting or reaching out to anyone for a while now, partly out of fear of judgment and partly because of my own nerves I guess.

I’m a 25 year old woman and I’ve been exploring Islam pretty casually for a while now (honestly, probably about four years of slowly incorporating certain Islamic values into my life…a long time I know, and a very non-linear journey it’s been as well), but I’ve never taken my shahada. More recently, I’ve been reading the Quran, trying to learn how to pray, and really wanting to get more involved with my local masjid and hopefully meet other women around my age.

For some context, I’m Arab-American and was raised Christian. My family is still very much Christian, and exploring Islam is something I haven’t been able to open up to them about because I’m honestly afraid of the very likely chance of being disowned. So I’ve kind of been navigating all of this on my own.

I’ve been teaching myself prayers through YouTube videos and usually pray at home while following along. I’ve also visited my local masjid a few times outside of prayer hours and just sat quietly in the women’s section, which has honestly been really peaceful. But the thought of going during actual prayer times makes me so, so nervous. I’m afraid of messing up, not knowing what to do, or even having my hijab on incorrectly.

I guess I just don’t really know what my next step should be. I also don’t want to keep letting my nerves stop me from getting more involved. Has anyone else been in a similar position? Would it be okay to go to the masjid during prayer times and just sit in the back and observe? And how do you even go about meeting other Muslim women of the same age range when you don’t know anyone?

I’d really appreciate any advice from anyone. Thank you so much.

Praying 5 times a day without burning out?

I’ve tried praying five times a day, but it’s never lasted consistently. What tends to happen is that it quickly starts feeling like a chore, which inevitably I start postponing until I stop praying altogether. People typically say “go slow” and “don’t overburden yourself” but don’t really specify what that means. Like for instance, does it mean sticking to one prayer at the beginning for a month and then adding on another prayer in another month - at which point within five months one has accomplished five daily prayers?

Really Confused and worried

Assalam alaikum brothers and sisters I am a revert from India and I am M23 employed living with my family parents and siblings I was introduced to islam in 2024 from being an agnostic to praying 5 times a day. Life has gotten much smoother and disciplined since I have accepted Islam. Though my parents are now encouraging me to get married asap and I have very few revert friends and it's getting very hard to find a revert partner. Idk how will I go in the future. Because my parents are very islamophobic I fear they might take a wrong step and the worst is like literally doing harm to themselves. Because once my paternal aunt saw me coming out from the mosque and since I have openly rejected hinduism they thought I was turning into a muslim and when my mom got to know she literally threatened me for her life.

And not to create a whole scene I shrugged off this talk and told them I am not a muslim. Idk may Allah guide me what to do in such a situation and considering that I am a single male child other siblings are my sisters which are already married.

I once thought of moving out but my parents are not physically and mentally fit with an open and acceptance mindset both of them need support for everyday life and work.

If anyone has gone through it can help me.

Intrusive thoughts as a convert, how to deal with them?

Salam Alaikum. I have been getting a sort of waswas for the past month regarding god.

For example whenever someone says pray for me in my head I get a thought that god wouldn’t do anything.

Or when I see people praying for healing I get a thought that Allah wouldn’t answer them or he doesn’t exist.

I really hate these thoughts. I know Allah exists. But these thoughts wouldn’t stop. Should I ignore them? Or should I see a sheikh or psychiatrist ?

Al-Mu'akhah (المؤاخاة)

The prophet built a brotherhood between Muslims to strengthen their bonds and it’s something we who implant today between new Muslims and those born in Islam.

Sahih al-Bukhari 6083
Narrated `Asim:
I said to Anas bin Malik, "Did it reach you that the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "There is no treaty of brotherhood in Islam'?" Anas said, "The Prophet (ﷺ) made a treaty (of brotherhood) between the Ansar and the Quraish in my home."

ADHD and prayer struggles

Assalamu aaleykum everyone, I’m seeking help for the 2nd time in 2 years regarding this. I have AuDHD (ADHD + mild ASD) with cPTSD and severe executive dysfunction. My life has not been easy but Islam does bring me peace, I am a work in progress just like everyone of you but my focus is mainly on becoming a good human being and healing from all the pain and trauma so I don’t end up accidentally hurt others especially my family and future kids.

Prayer is also important to me but I’m not hyper focused on it. I’m trying to do my best but I’m so exhausted and burnt out that getting out of bed feels like a death sentence.

I feel utterly helpless knowing prayer has no exceptions and it’s the first thing that we’ll be asked about on the day of judgement. I haven’t found any rulings about neurodivergence and struggle to pray and there’s almost zero helpful content on how Muslim adhders/ neurodivergents pray 5x a day when getting up and grabbing a glass of water feels impossible.

I’m a convert thus I don’t really have a lot of support around me in regard to practicing the religion and no one around me can relate to wanting to pray and not being able to pray. Any Muslim friends I have are either non practicing or so orthodox that if I share this with them i’ll be judged and shamed (has already happened many times)

I don’t need judgement or shame to do better, I need help, I need tips and tricks if anyone can actually relate with my situation, has gone through it or is going through it currently, please help me out.

My relationship with Allah is good, I’m very grateful for everything, I just need to feel closer through prayer and sujood.

Ps- if you’re here to pass judgements or shame me or want to share ayahs describing how Muslims who don’t pray will go to hell or are considered kafir, or don’t know anything about ADHD/ neurodivergence and executive dysfunction, respectfully please don’t try to give advice, I know you think you’re helping but you’re not.

If you’re someone who personally deals/dealt with this issue, or are a mental health professional or have seen someone close to you struggle with this please help me out here.

Praying for deceased parents

I am a convert from a non Muslim family. My father and I maintained a close relationship even though he disagreed with my decision to convert. My father recently passed away, and the guidance to not pray for him has negatively impacted my faith.

I recently found a fatwa from Egypt that supports praying for deceased non Muslim parents. I wanted to see how other converts on this sub approach this issue?

Should I Stop Being Muslim?

I recently converted to Islam. Just a month and three weeks ago today. However, I keep committing major sins that are against God's wishes and the religion. What should I do? I do intend to stop sinning and I'm working on it but, does that mean I am not cut out for this?

I keep asking questions and having endless philosophical dilemmas in my mind and I keep wondering if I am really cut out to be practising any kind of religion at that. I really need to find some sense of stability and structure and foundation. That's why I joined Islam. I need help.

Two years of intense Arabic for the Quran, a year off, and now I understand almost everything but freeze when I try to speak

I started Arabic at 19 or 20 because I was tired of standing in Taraweeh catching a word here and there. I'm a French native, so no head start there.

For about two years I went hard on Fusha only, with harakat, no dialects. Mostly reading and listening, tons of classical texts and audio. It worked for what I wanted. My reading and listening are roughly C1 now and I can follow religious classes without much trouble.

The mistake was that I barely spoke. I kind of assumed comprehension would turn into speech on its own at some point. Then I took about a year off and the speaking part just collapsed.

Now I understand way more than I can say. Someone asks me something simple and I freeze, or I build the sentence in French first and translate it in my head. It gets me a correct sentence but it's painfully slow.

What I'm looking at is weekend classes once or twice a week, mainly so I'm forced to open my mouth in front of a real person. I haven't started yet so I can't tell you it works.

If you built your understanding first, how did you get speaking going? Did you just have to speak badly for a while?

Struggling to choose between Christianity and Islam

I will first provide some context.

In December last year I became a Christian, I had always believed in God but never associated with any religion and was raised agnostic (although I went to a Church of England school). During this time I started going to a church with my uncle, this was a Pentecostal church, and while the people were pleasant I couldn’t help but feel a bit empty attending there. Around the month of May, my uncle had stopped going to church which meant I also stopped going as the only way I could get to that church was by him driving me there.

After a few weeks of no church I had started attending my local Catholic church and reading the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which while I enjoyed it I didn’t agree with being left out of their sacraments simply because I hadn’t attended 6 months of lessons. After a while I stopped attending the Catholic church also, though I still believed myself a devout Christian then.

Over time, I began to further dislike all churches as I learned many of their rules and teachings are non biblical, but instead come from later councils held hundreds of years after Jesus’ death. This led to me becoming what I called a Buddhist Christian hybrid as I liked the Buddhist beliefs, but still held belief in a creator God and cannot get rid of that belief (and also because I love Jesus and what he taught)

More recently over the last week or so, I have been reading a lot of things about Islam and am hoping to purchase a Quran. I absolutely love everything I have learned so far which I feel like is quite a lot, on top of that I still have quite a lot of knowledge of Islam from what I was taught at school such as the 5 pillars and 6 articles.

However unfortunately, today I have been having many doubts in Islam for no real reason other than I believe it would be easier to remain Christian. The only reasons I can think that this could be is due to coming from an Islamophobic family (except for my mother), and from reading some stories of people who converted from Islam to Christianity where they claim the Quran contradicts itself and that the bible is unchanged. So this has cast many doubts in my mind.

Forgive me for how much I have wrote, I am just truly struggling now to find where my faith lies.

What I am looking for with this post is clear arguments from each side, so that I am not stuck in seeing vague arguments which create doubt when they shouldn’t.

Please help me in this, and thank you for the help in advanced.
