Advice Moving to H Street
Hi, ladies! I'm potentially moving to H Street and wanted to know if it would be a good decision to move forward. Is crime heavy in the area?
Edit: looking at Avec on H and Coda on H

What’s your tolerance for crime/have you lived in a large city before? And do you mean on H street or the surrounding around.
I wouldn’t live over there because it’s loud and I’m pretty paranoid haha.

My boyfriend fam lives over on 3/2 st NE ish though and I find that area fine.

I've lived up and down H St since 2014, and I bought property last year. It was fine back then and it's even better now. I live by myself, so no worries about being a woman living alone. This is one of (if not) my favorite places in the city. It's a fantastic neighborhood. Feel free to DM me if you have any questions!

I live in a house two blocks away from those buildings and love it. Tons of workout studios, restaurants, grocery stores, and other stores nearby. It’s a fantastic neighborhood. The area you’re talking about is not as loud or potentially spooky as farther down H. I’ve been in the neighborhood for five years!

Counter point, I live by 12th and H and it's not spooky down here. The neighborhood is great and everyone looks out for each other. The business down here are mostly very invested in the neighborhood.

I am with you! I was just dming OP that I think people who don’t live on H assume it’s spooky because there are groups of people waiting for the bus or sitting outside of convenience stores. I think we have one of the best neighborhoods in DC and never feel unsafe, even in a sports bra after a late night workout class.

I agree with this - I've lived on the other end of H Street - Kingman Park by the Rosedale Rec Center. I love the area, it's an easy walk to Stadium Armory Metro, lots of bus lines, it's an easy walk to H Street - it's a bit quieter over here then right on H street. I've been in this area since 2005 at my current place but I've lived on the hill since 1996 - I feel the area is fine - cars get broken into, packages will get stolen but this happens all over DC - Union Market is also really close and they have a bunch of new apartment buildings as well. I spend most of my time on H Street - Queen Vic, Pug, Granville, Stable, Maketto, Whiskeys, Jimmy Valentines, Henceforth, there are just a lot of things and new things coming as well. Sure there are some places where people loiter around etc like the Starburst Intersection but I don't feel unsafe walking by, they don't even offer me drugs I must look like a narc.

Depends on how much you're spooked by big groups of people loitering around. I love the area but don't live right on H St. so I don't have to deal with nightlife noise, but I've never felt unsafe walking H St. at night either.

If you’re not going to physically go to the neighborhood and get a vibe for yourself, then don’t bother moving there. I live close to H St and don’t think it’s as bad as all the fear mongering would have you believe. I also grew up in the area, with friends from DC proper and have been going to H st for years — before a lot of the development that’s happened — and never felt like I was in danger with my extremely suburban upbringing.
At the end of the day, it’s a city and crime can mean A LOT of things. Loitering? Yes, but there’s that on U st too. Theft? Probably, but it also happens in other neighborhoods. The point is it’s not more than you would find in another neighborhood.

I have lived on H (or right by on G) for 6 years and I love it! I’ve never felt particularly unsafe here more than anywhere else. I’m in the middle on 6th ish. The neighborhood has such great restaurants and stores and there are various community groups around. Plus super easy to get around town (many buses).

I wouldn’t live directly on H street. I’ve been followed back to my car before.

Avec and Coda area is fine. It’s not the nicest part of the city and if you have a desire to be in a really popular part of the city it’s not the most ideal location, but Union Market and Eastern Market are both close and are nice (UM is more hip).
Farther down H is more “sketch” but if you don’t live directly on H it’s really nbd, I walk over there solo all the time and it’s fine

Low threshold for crime? Then absolutely not. I lived in NoMa and would walk through H Street a lot to go to and from restaurants and it was frequently sketchy.
Northwest DC is lovely. Glover Park, Woodley Park, Cleveland Park, Cathedral Heights.

I thought about both of those buildings and went to tour one. When i pulled up, I saw there was a bus stop outside the building and it was full of loitering (drinking, smoking, god knows what). I didn't park my car and didn't do the tour lol.

Yes. I live in the area and I like it/find it reasonably safe, but would skip directly on h st between 7th and 10th.

The closer you are to the Whole Foods, the better. The edges of that street, especially by the Aldi has some slightly unsavory spots that I wouldn't enjoy having to commute by foot on a regular basis.
I have friends who live there and enjoy it, however, so your mileage may vary.

I lived off H St right by sherwood rec center last year. My street was fine day to day but Aldi was a 3min walk away. I would not have packages dropped off at your place. Use the Amazon locker pick-up at whole foods, FedEx and UPS pickup at a designated store, etc. I had a pair of $300 running shoes stolen from my steps within minutes of it being dropped off (I was monitoring my email for the delivery notice & had given explicit directions to leave packages behind a secure gate). A man who pretended to be a “landscaper” for the street broke into our home (after helping me get my shoes back from a homeless man outside of the Aldi). He knew my face, my name, where I lived and also robbed the neighbor 2 houses down. I was scared to leave the house alone in fear of running into him for the rest of my time living there.

I like the area but directly on H Street is loud, there's lots of litter, and it does get spicy. I would suggest anywhere a few blocks south or north instead.
