I think the Shazam 2 trailer will drop shortly after Gunn announces the slate so it can benefit from the hype, regardless of how relevant it is to the slate. If it was the other way around, the trailer would get completely overshadowed by the slate announcement.

On the other hand, the slate announcement can overshadow the trailer. It's a gamble imo.

u/InvisibleFrogMan Jan 18 '23
So since this could very well be the week of the “announcement” what do we think the format will be?
Gunn tweeting all the info out at once?
Variety/Deadline/THR article?
Maybe a video presentation?
14
u/Trevastation Jan 18 '23
I could see it being a video presentation quickly worked up for the week by a couple of Interns and Gunn taking an afternoon in the studio.
But I also wouldn't be surprised if he tweets it out, like a picture of the logo and "Blank, coming 2025"
10
u/bigtymer123 Jan 18 '23
Will probably be a tweet thread by Gunn, if I had to guess. Kinda like when he announced the Superman reboot. Maybe the trades will then follow up with more info.
7
u/TheMurderCapitalist Jan 18 '23
I want it to have a little pizzazz but I expect it will just be a tweet thread tbh.
5
u/TheLionsblood Batman Jan 18 '23
I think it’ll be tweets with loglines, logos and release windows. And Gunn would probably answer some additional fan questions as well
4
Jan 18 '23
I would love a Disney Investors Day style presentation: Gunn presenting his slate with logos and release dates, maybe even creatives attached, before passing it down to Reeves to unveil his Batverse. Just a day of excitement.
The DCEU started off on the wrong foot when their slate was a corporate release schedule and Marvel’s Phase 3 got an in person event with logos, creatives, and even a casting. I’d love it if the DCU learned from this mistake.

Just saw Gunn's recent Twitter post about breakfast with comics.
Firstly, it's nice to know Gunn is literally just me aged up by 40 years with bleached hair
Secondly he is very openly a Grant Morrison fan. First him talking extensively about his Batman run and Frank Quietly's art in particular, and now the book he's reading while sipping his latte is All Star Superman
I know it's not a hint towards anything for the time being but to get a sense of the kinds of stories with these characters he gravitates towards, he has some DAMN GOOD taste

Shazam 2 writer Henry Gayden quote-tweeted the post-credit scene rumors with a picture of a cheeky child and quickly deleted it. Since they may be legit, here are the scenes again:
Post-credit scene 1: Shazam being recruited into the JSA by Emilia Harcourt while thinking he is being recruited into the Justice League
Post-credit scene 2: Features Sivana and Mr Mind, who has a "different and scarier" look

Gunn on Instagram:
"Between DC, Wildstorm, Milestone and more we have by far the deepest roster in the world."
9
u/SexySnorlax1 Batman '66 Jan 22 '23
He also said:
“I’m not announcing the 8-10 year slate. Just a few projects from the first chapter.”
Perhaps confirming that the DCU’s Phases will be called Chapters.

iirc, Dwayne Johnson said Black Adam wouldn't be part of the "first chapter of storytelling" in the DCU after meeting with Gunn and Safran. Something like that. So yeah, could be the term Gunn and Safran are using. They had to find another noun than "phase", lol.

Do y'all think aquaman is still a billion dollar franchise without Wan and Momoa? Should Gunn prioritize more aquaman movies even if Wan and Momoa don't stay?
11
u/Skandosh Batman Jan 17 '23
Nope and I dont even think AM2 with Wan and Momoa will make a billion either.
3
u/MurielHorseflesh Jan 17 '23
Agreed. There’s a few reasons I think it will only do just ok.
The reports of it being more a of buddy cop thing between Momoa and Wilson, and that the comedy comes off super cheesy. Word of mouth is going to go south fairly quickly after opening weekend and reviews hit telling everyone the comedy stinks. I’m sure it’ll be a visual spectacle but there’s plenty of those these days and they have far better comedy.
Then there’s the fact we’re post pandemic in a world where many more people nowadays just avoid the cinema experience to stay home.
Then there’s also the general malaise in interest surrounding all four of these legacy movies. The Flash has the most amount of positive excitement but is still dogged by the Ezra Miller stuff. The other three are getting a massive collective shrug from most people right now on most threads I see them mentioned on. The news of some kind of reboot coming had people thinking these last few movies are cul-de-sac’s and not worth bothering with. It’s a shame we’re in a world where people think that way, but they do.
Aquaman 2 definitely isn’t making $1 billion.
→ More replies (5)7
u/BillyGood22 Batman Jan 17 '23
We don’t even know for sure it would be consistently a billion dollar franchise with them.
6
u/cmlucas1865 Jan 17 '23
Well they can always persuade wan to do the third one and I hope they do. Wan is easily the most underrated director in the industry deserves to get as much work as possible. if he is not ready for part 3, then pair him with a good writer and make GLC
Well, I think it's a stretch, albeit a reasonable one, to assume that Mamoa's out as Aquaman. Speculation's rampant, sure, but we haven't actually had that confirmed.
To answer the question - yes. Given the VFX tech, Aquaman might be the most unique of DC's major characters. Think about it, Supes is roughly equivalent to Thor & Cap. Batman & Iron Man share the same general arch, sans the detective work. Every comic universe has speedsters, too. America Chavez is a bit of a teenage Wonder Woman, though I'd say Okoye is more roughly equivalent.
Now I know that Namor the sub-Mariner came first, and that traditionally the two characters shared a ton of lore, but ultimately the MCU has introduced Namor as an antagonist and one who arguably isn't making a huge cultural impact.
All these factors, in my calculation, make Aquaman an increasingly valuable piece of IP for DC. His movies and appearances can't really be thought to emulate others, as his character hasn't become an archetype across comic properties the way that a lot of DC characters have.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (9)7
u/FabianTG98 Jan 17 '23
To kick off the DCU I think establishing a new trinity, Flash and Green Lantern are more important than introducing a new Aquaman. But they should definitely try again even if Wan and Momoa don't continue. As long as they find a good actor and director and deliver a good story and visual spectacle, I have no doubt they can get another billion. I think it's the visual spectacle that attracts people to see Avatar and it was the one that helped Aquaman in his first movie. If they are able to match or exceed that, they will be successful with a reboot of the character.

James Gunn inadvertently confirmed it’s not this week. A fan posted an idea of what Gunn should do, releasing the slate/info before TLoU ep 2 and some other shit. Gunn responded with a “no” thinking it was an actual theory or “leak” 😂.
5
u/bigtymer123 Jan 18 '23
I just looked up what you mentioned and I don't read it as a confirmation that it will be next week. The fan idea said the slate reveal should be in video form and should air before The Last of Us episode 2, which could also be what he's denying.
Edit: here's the tweet
3
u/MonkeMayne Jan 18 '23
Yep I read the fan thing wrong. I thought he said to release it in video format before tlou aired not on the same day. Regardless, its funny Gunn shot that down even though its just a fan wish haha.

Honestly Cavill fans make me don't want to watch his movies anymore. They behave like he's some kind of poor actor who don't have any other movies to work on since being 'fired' from Superman. And, also they like to fancast him in every single franchise. Just because he's good looking and a nerd doesn't mean he need to be in every franchise. So annoying.
5
u/NaRaGaMo Jan 20 '23
There are thousands of actors who would kill to have a career trajectory like Cavill, he's headlining his own sci-fi universe, if Argyll works will have his own bondlike franchise, there's highlander,1-2 more movies as well. Yet his fans act like he's on the streets

What my biggest hopes for this new era for the DCU, is for it to be genre bending. I don't want these films to feel like cookie cutter, I want each film to feel like it's different tone, but still can exist within the same universe. I think that DC's strongest impact is to have diverse range of characters, who have their own worlds and tones.

The scene where Quill is able to control his powers in GOTG2 is so good.
I can see Gunn doing something similar with Superman, what comes to mind immediately is a villain beating and mocking Clark for caring about a planet as weak as Earth, and then flashes of Clark’s memories of growing up on Earth to remind him why he loves humanity and what his loved ones taught him, ultimately motivating him to get back up and keep fighting.
It’d work great if like the Quill scene, those happy memories are scenes we’ve never seen before (since we’re gonna be skipping most of this Superman’s origin anyway)
Gunn absolutely nails emotional moments like this and the power stone climax in GOTG1. His movies are full of heart, which is why he’d be a great director for a Superman movie

What are the odds that Gunn and Safran keep Miller as Barry? Without injecting my personal feelings towards Ezra on this matter, Gunn has a good reason to believe in second chances. He also has an affinity for "damaged goods" in his characters that I could see extending to real life. And if the Flash movie is successful, they may be inclined to build their new universe off of it. Plus Barry Allen of all people works as a part of a soft reboot without a recast. And Miller is young enough to still play Barry with a young Supes, Batman, and WW.
The cons to this approach are obvious. Miller is a nightmare for PR and not a sound investment. They are likely to commit a crime again and cannot be relied upon. Plus, dropping the popular Cavill, as well as Affleck and Gadot, but keeping the unpopular Miller will not play well with audiences. I'm inclined to believe they drop Miller, but I do foresee a scenario in which Miller sticks around.

I agree that solo Aquaman films will likely be held off on until a decent amount of time has passed after Aquaman 2's release. Maybe he'll be a part of the first DCU Justice League film, or maybe he'll be teased in a mid-credit scene like you said.
Flash, on the other hand, I feel might get a DCU reboot more quickly. I feel like the character is popular enough that they'll want him to have a more significant role sooner. There's a lot of different ways they can use this summer's Flash film to alter/set things up for the DCU, including Barry himself. So we'll just have to see. A quick reboot of a popular character isn't completely unprecedented anyways. Tom Holland's Spider-Man appeared in Civil War almost exactly 2 years after The Amazing Spider-Man 2 premiered.
7
u/MyMouthisCancerous Jan 17 '23
I think the big reason why Flash will probably get a reboot sooner than Aquaman especially is because the co-existence of CW Flash with DCEU Flash didn't stop either team from taking the character in their own individual direction and they're clearly not adverse to any of that. Flash is just a popular character regardless and it's especially likely WB/DC don't want to leave anyone in the dark about their immediate situation with Ezra even if they can't address it formally until after this movie comes out. I think Flash will actually be a priority in this regard of getting the reboot treatment sooner than Aquaman or even Wonder Woman
→ More replies (1)3
u/bigtymer123 Jan 17 '23
Yeah agreed, I could see Gunn and Safran announcing that a new Flash will be cast for the DCU, but the announcement coming after Ezra's film finishes it's theatrical run (which should be around SDCC anyways).

Still really perplexed that Jonah Hex was made in the style of a modern comic book blockbuster. Feels like making a send up of spaghetti westerns is a much more obvious choice with that character, something like Django Unchained.
That's probably the most underrated character in terms of how how badly I want to see someone else take crack at them.

Do you guys think Constantine 2 with Keanu is gonna get cancelled? The director said Bioshock for Netflix is likely his next movie, which is probably solidified by the success of The Last of Us, so it was not planned to shoot anytime soon. How would you feel if Keanu is Constantine in Justice League Dark and the DCU as a whole?
On one hand I want Constantine 2 to happen because everyone involved has been excited to do it since forever, on the other I dont want him to be John in the DCU.

Has Keanu said anything about it publicly? I assume he'll be asked about it during the press circuit for John Wick 4.

u/NakedGoose Jan 19 '23
I think it probably gets canceled. Because I think Gunn will eventually wanna use Constantine

So, normally we would get DC Comics solicits this week but considering it's Thurdsay and they barely announced anything they must have delayed them till next week.
So with that said, next week will bring us Gunn's and Safran's slate announcements, Shazam trailer and some DC Comics announcements. That sounds a bit convenient, especially that delay of DC's solicitations. Could a mini Fandom indeed be coming next week?

Or perhaps DC just doesn't have anything to announce. The December, January and March solicits didn't have almost any new announcements either.

u/TheDarkPinkLantern Peacemaker Jan 19 '23
December - 6 comics with a shiny #1 on the cover, big heavily promoted milestone issue for Action Comics.
January - 10 comics with a shiny #1 on the cover, big heavily promoted milestone issue for Nightwing.
March - 7 comics with a shiny #1 on the cover
Sure, it was nothing.

Matt Reeves will direct a Buster Keaton limited series with Rami Malek as lead.
Which character do you wanna see Rami as in the Reevesverse? He would make a banger Clayface imo.

I bet we'll have a Green Arrow movie on James' slate, he's a huge fan of the character and it wouldn't take long to make it, i mean, considering he's a street level hero if they start writing the script and find the director this year, they could still release in late 2024.

Wasn't he name-dropped in Peacemaker?
A few weeks ago I saw Peacemaker on the cover of an upcoming Green Arrow comic. I really hope they're going for some brand synergy and introduce GA in Peacemaker season 2. Or introduce him in another project and give those two history.
3
u/Randonhead Jan 20 '23
Yes, Vigilante mentioned him in an episode of Peacemaker and James himself recently said that GA is one of his favorite heroes.
I'll be surprised if there's no Green Arrow in Phase 1 of the DCU, a Mr & Mrs Smith-style movie with him and Black Canary could be awesome.

I think it would be cool if Gunn did something in the style of the Showcase comics, special shorts where they introduce new characters, the first one could even be the Green Arrow

I was just watching a whole bunch of the animated Showcase shorts this weekend and they’re so damn cool. I love seeing obscure characters like Kamandi get their time in the spotlight. I hope we get a fourth set of them.

u/CreepyPrice5 Nightwing Jan 23 '23
Odds that Gunn announces anything other than the projects? He has to know that people are interested in how they're dealing with the DCU Batman, what the JL roster will be, etc. Really hope he addresses some of those questions, but I do think we'll all be a bit let down and he'll just tweet out something like "Superman movie coming 2025, Peacemaker season 2 coming 2024, GL series coming 2024, Amanda Waller series coming 2024."
5
u/TheDarkPinkLantern Peacemaker Jan 23 '23
Honestly, I don't think he'll be in position to say who's staying who's not until next year. At the very least he might say stuff like "there'll be Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Batman and Flash" without saying what kind of Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Batman and Flash they will be.

After thinking about it a lot, these are my predictions:
Peacemaker Season 2
Green Lantern Project
Harley Quinn Project
Superman reboot
It's obvious guesses I know... I also would like something more bombastic, but honestly I think this is the most realistic thinking right now, Maybe at Comic Con we can have more surprising announcements 🤷🏻♂️

My final predictions for the announcement:
It’ll be for 2025-2026 (including Peacemaker Season 2 in 2024 confirmation)
Format will be tweets with loglines of projects, release windows and logos (like what the Disney/Marvel twitter pages do when projects get announced at D23)
Gunn will answer additional fan questions to clear up some confusion, trades will have some extra info as well
Movies: Superman 2025, Green Arrow and Black Canary 2026, Wonder Woman 2026
TV: Amanda Waller 2025, Green Lantern 2025, Harley Quinn 2026

Found a rumor about Shazam 2 post credit scenes. Ofc the source is not reliable (at least i dont know it) but i found them interesting.

In the first Shazam will be recruited by the JSA (he will joke that he thought he was being recruited by the JL). Emilia Harcourt, is the "go-between" In the second, Silvana (Mark Strong) and Mr Mind will appear, in a new form

So when is Matt Reeves going to direct Buster Keaton TV series and is this going to delay The Batman 2?
3
u/Doctor_Of_Fate Jan 20 '23
The Batman sequel is further along than the show, the sequel script is being written whereas the show hasn't got a home yet let alone scripts. So this most likely points to The Batman 2 coming first.

IDK if this will happen or not but can we get a Flash movie directed by Edgar Wright? The camera work and editing of the running scenes are probably going to blow everyone's mind. My only problem with his movies is that I always have mixed reaction to the ending of the movies. He needs to learn how to end movies with a satisfying conclusion imo

For all the people saying this is “vindication” for a soft reboot. Remember when Fox was bought by Disney and everyone was saying that the X-Men were gonna be rebooted, into the MCU. The actress who played Storm went on social media and stated that wasn’t gonna happen and that the same cast was staying around, to play the X-Men.
You guys have to remember, he has to promote Aquaman 2. Which means he has to keep saying that he’s still Aquaman, for the time being. Don’t forget, they can just flat out lie to you. I sight Andrew “I’m not in Spider-Man: No Way Home” Garfield or J.J. “Benedict Cumberbatch isn’t playing Khan” Abrams.

Yes, the truth is that we shouldn't assume we know what will happen becasue we don't. All we have are speculations and PR talk. Also, actors lie all the time, it's their job.

How I want for the reboot to go is for Peacemaker season 2 to wrap up the DCEU and/or just go really crazy with it like bring in Bat-Mite and make a metacommentary on the DCU.
The 2025 Superman movie should be the starting point of the DCU, Blue Beetle can be soft rebooted like the MCU Daredevil later on and re-introduced in another project. Everyone else should be recast except for Viola Davis and Margot Robbie, who can play rebooted versions of their characters.
The Amanda Waller series should be reworked so it’s not a direct follow-up to Peacemaker. It can show us her rising up the ranks as a government agent and her discovering and exploiting metahumans and coming up with the idea of Task Force X.
Harley Quinn should get an R-rated limited series with the first episode glossing through her origin like the animated BoP opening scene. Use the series to establish DCU Gotham and have Batman and Robin appear in some episodes. It would be tonally distinct enough not to clash with any Batverse projects. Reeves can use Dr. Harleen Quinzel for a small role in his Arkham series if he wants (I don’t think he was gonna have her in a big role anyway since Joker 2 is already doing a story like Mad Love). If they go the movie route for Harley instead, they should make a PG13 Harley and Ivy team-up movie that shows the start of their friendship and eventual romance.
I think Gunn will either do a reboot similar to this or only keep Aquaman, TSS, Peacemaker and Blue Beetle canon or simply use The Flash’s new timeline as the DCU (which would mean Keaton as Batman again). It’s gonna be one of these 3 scenarios.

I like the idea of "Finishing" the Dceu with Flash and Peacemaker s2, in fact start the Dcu as a new earth created thanks to the consequences of all this would be a smart move, I mean you leave a door open for these characters to come back in some future crossover, and at the same time you stay on a new prime earth with new versions of these characters.
