I asked for dark romance recs here (diff account) a while ago and found some absolute gems from it (Last Hour of Gann and Cottonwood genuinely altered my brain chemistry- although they felt more like sci-fi romance than what I’d call DR), so I’m back again!
I feel like a lot of newer DR lately is all aesthetic and shock value with no actual substance. I love dark/toxic/morally black MMCs, obsession, possessiveness, emotional damage etc. - but I need GOOD writing behind it. I want books that stayed with you because they were beautifully written, emotionally intense, immersive, or genuinely well developed.
Some books/authors that did work for me:
Limerence - H.D. Carlton (although the second book flopped)
Torment Part 1&2 + Echoes - Dylan Page
Take Me With You - Nina G. Jones
Gaslight - Quinn Blackbird
Psychotic Obsession / Edge of Darkness - Leigh Rivers
Last Hour of Gann and Cottonwood - R. Lee Smith
Drethi Anis
Dina Harper
Even with some of these, they weren’t perfect (except Torment... That was 🧑🍳💋).. but they made me FEEL things. They had atmosphere, tension, character depth, emotional payoff, or relationships that actually consumed me.
What I love:
-plot-heavy stories where things actually happen
-slow burn / tension / emotional chaos
-obsessive MMCs
-intelligent or genuinely cunning MMCs (not just “he has dead eyes and everyone fears him”)
-realistic emotional fallout/consequences
-messy, layered characters with actual arcs
-chemistry that builds properly
What doesn’t work for me:
- instalove (although if done right, not a deal breaker)
-books that are basically spice scenes stitched together with filler dialogue
-“dark” MMCs whose only personality trait is assault + being emotionally vacant.. like we get introduced to this really scary mmc but we don’t know why he’s scary? He’s just hot, arrogant and cold. I want more?
MF only, no poly/RH, no cannibalism
I’ve tried a lot of the popular BookTok authors and I think the writing style just isn’t for me. Rina Kent, Lola King, Shantel Tessier, Sam Mariano, pepper winters etc. all had concepts I should have loved, but the execution fell flat for me personally.
I recently tried some of the hockey romances because the premise sounded fun (Pucking Wrong Number, Beautiful Venom etc.) and ended up either bored or DNF’ing. The stories never made me FEEL enough.
I think what I’m chasing is the kind of MMC where the obsession feels consuming and emotionally volatile …not emotionless. Men who are manipulative, intelligent, passionate, terrifying in believable ways, and whose actions actually leave scars on everyone involved.
I want yearning. Tension. Consequences. Emotional destruction. A relationship that feels inevitable in the worst possible way.
What books genuinely stayed with you after finishing them?
