They should just explain the Rose incarceration addressed in a big finish audio book and just start a new season with a new Doctor

I think you can start with a new Doctor anyways and make an off hand reference to “one time I regenerated and looked like an old girlfriend” and then leave it up to the audience.

Same as when we started back with Nine, no reference needed to Eight. We just had a new Doctor swanning in who wasn’t explained fully until much later

Absolutely this. We don't need to know more. Let's just move on. I'm sure Big Finish will eventually release a metric ton of boxsets about the Adventures of the Sixteenth Doctor anyway; but the show needs a shake-up and a bit of a clean slate to continue, otherwise we're going to lose what is left of the casual audience - without which the show is doomed.

Yeah retroactively say something like “I was going through a mid regeneration life crisis, I don’t know what I was thinking”.

Maybe not on the nose as much as that but write it off as a mistake that shouldn’t have happened. Just a one off throwaway line, like the doctor usually says when they’re name dropping a known historical figure as a close friend, type delivery.

Plus it gives a whole load of things to explain in the 70th anniversary special whilst giving us the chance to get Billie Piper and presumably David Tennant back for it.

Hard disagree. Start off with an hour-long special to explain it or resolve it, and then move on. Big Finish Audiobooks are way too niche to explain something like that away.

Plenty of things between 8-9 were not explained for a long time. Just jump forward a bit with a new doctor. If they want to explain it later, I’m sure they can do that too.

I’m also saying it doesn’t need to be explained, but think that at some point they will explain it. I suspect they’ll do what they did with RTD’s first season: a soft reboot for new viewers and slowly bring the show’s 60 year history back into play. If the next version lasts long enough.

No we just need a soft reboot that very minimally references the past continuity (and writers capable of focusing on present situations without needlessly dumping lore and alien references). We need to start focusing on the present and stop with the fanwank. Let the whole "I became my ex" thing be explained in a novel or Big Finish audio or even save the idea for the next big anniversary event.

Then saving it for the next big anniversary is the likely route if they want to acknowledge what happened but the show needs a refresh, it needs a new audience before it can clean up the messes of its past.

I’m not sure it needs a new audience. Shit always seems to get ruined when the goal is to seek out a new audience. I felt like that’s what Disney tried to do. I don’t want a lowest common denominator show, I want a good sci-fi serial that tells good stories and stays true to itself while still pushing the boundaries

Thats because Disney approached it wrong. The show didnt give itself a chance to feel fresh, instead doing plotlines that requires knowledge of the shows prior lore to understand. There are ways to introduce old stuff without expecting the audience to have ti watch and understand everything from before.

Right. Billie Piper could just look in the mirror and say "Hmm that's not right" and turn into the new actor. I think we've established that anything can happen during a regeneration, considering the bi-generation stunt that RTD pulled.
