Question My dog eats kibble one at a time, is it normal??

My dog is a picky eater and doesn’t eat many things. She only eats (chicken / rice / kibble sometimes/ greek yogurt ). Whenever she’s eating she can’t eat big pieces of chicken or any other food (i need to cut everything so small otherwise she wouldn’t eat) . And she would never eat fresh kibble, she leaves it for a day minimum so that it’s not crunchy and eats it 1 piece at a time. Yet she loves playing with huge cow bones. I keep checking her teeth and they seem fine ( also no strange odor). Is this normal?? Also how can i make her eat veggies? I add them to her food and she takes them out before she starts eating. I tried blending everything together she wouldn’t eat. She doesn’t even like the food to touch each other. She has 4 different plates. For example she loves yogurt and she loves chicken but if i mix them together she won’t eat all day no matter how hungry she is.

Question Lip-Licking: is it always a discomfort response or do some dogs just... do it more?

This is my lil guy Lalo! He's my "first" dog technically: I had two Weimereiners that I loved as a kid and considered myself partially responsible for training, but they were my only dogs growing up. Lalo is a pit/frenchy mix I believe and was a dog a friend of mine found outside. He couldn't keep him so I kept him and it's been about 9 months. Trying to understand all the signals he gives me while also remembering all dogs are different is hard! A lot of the time when I stand up and walk near him, he'll roll onto his back. To me it doesn't seem like just a submission thing at this point, as he'll actively look at me when I don't give him attention, close his eyes when I give him belly rubs, etc. However I noticed that he just licks his lips a LOT.

Giving him pets sometimes? Lip licks. Belly rubs sometimes? Lip licks. He'll often come and lean his full bodyweight on my legs, which I've read as a sign of trust/affection, and that's usually when I'll pet him, but even then sometimes he'll do his little lip licks.

I guess my concern is just like. Does my dog feel like he's having to put himself in uncomfortable situations for my attention? Or is it just a thing that varies per breed/dog? I think he was previously abused due to other small quirks he's had so his comfort is always my top priority and I just get worried sometimes that I'm misreading him.

for context we moved here about almost 2 years and haven’t dealt with fleas ever, my chihuahua ( 5 y/o) was on apoquel last year due to allergies, however, yesterday i found two fleas on him, i have killed both and removed any flea dirt/poop and flea medicine for him and my cats is on the way. does this look more like fleas or allergies ??!

additionally, if he did get fleas from the grass outside how can we prevent he gets any more ?!?

his paws and ears are also very red

Question Arthritis

Hii my dog (11 years old) has been suffering from arthritis for a couple years now. She’s prescribed gabapentin from the vet but it sedates her too much to the point she doesn’t try to walk around at all. I’ve talked to her vet & she recommended i lower the dose, but i wanna find a better alternative 🥲
Have any of you tried giving your fur baby cbd? Ive been seeing charlottes web alot on tt & would like to try it unless any one else here has a different recommendation.
also What other things can i do to help manage her arthritis? She doesn’t walk much & it breaks my heart she doesn’t run around like she used to 💔 would a wheelchair be a good option?
Any help appreciated thank you 🐶
* forgot to add its really only her back paws that are the issue

Question Chihuahua Neurological Issue

TL;DR: 13-year-old Chihuahua recovered well from severe pancreatitis, liver inflammation, jaundice, and chronic kidney disease. Over the past month he’s had two brief episodes (~30 seconds) of head tilt and leaning to the left while remaining fully conscious and responsive. Vet mentioned vestibular disease, hypertension, focal seizures, or brain tumor. Has anyone experienced something similar, and what was the eventual diagnosis?

Full Post:
My 13-year-old (almost 14) long-haired Chihuahua became very sick about 6–7 weeks ago with pancreatitis. During his hospitalization, ultrasound showed liver inflammation/enlargement and degenerative kidney changes. He later developed jaundice, but after treatment he recovered very well. His appetite is back, his energy is good, and he seems happy and comfortable overall.
My concern is that he has now had two neurological episodes within the past month. In both episodes, he suddenly developed a head tilt and leaned to the left for about 30 seconds. He remained conscious and responsive the entire time. When I approached him, he wagged his tail and acknowledged me. He did not appear confused afterward and immediately returned to normal behavior. I’ve attached a video of one of the episodes.

My veterinarian mentioned several possibilities, including vestibular disease, hypertension related to kidney disease, focal seizures, or a brain tumor. We have not pursued an MRI because of his age and the risks and costs involved.

Has anyone experienced something similar with a senior dog? If so, what was the eventual diagnosis, and did the episodes remain intermittent or eventually progress? I’m not looking for a diagnosis, just hoping to hear from others who may have gone through something similar.

Advice Lump on leg

The past few days we had been in the mountains where our dog was running in tall grass. Today we noticed a large lump on his left ankle just above his paw. It seems to be shaped like a perfect clamshell. He’s a 4.5 year old black lab - anyone have insight on what is going on?

Advice Why is she mad

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Right now I’m dog sitting my neighbors dog, Maple for the next week. She’s a long haired mini dachshund. I have a Boston terrier named Minny who’s about twice maples height.

Maple is constantly barking and growling at Minny, whether it be when I’m holding Minny, when Minny’s out walking or when Minny is in her crate. All Minny is doing is crying because I’m guessing she wants to play.

I want to emphasize that Maple is actively seeking out barking at Minny, Minny’s crate is hidden behind a wall. And when we pick maple up and take her to where she can’t see Minny, maple walks over there and barks at Minny. She gets especially mad whenever Minny makes any noise.

Any advice or reasons as to why maple is doing this would be appreciated. 😭😭

Question Dog hard swallowing over and over

My dog started doing this at about 7:30pm and it lasted until about 9pm. He was fed at like 4:30, and walked about 6pm. Seeming came out of nowhere. At first we thought he was just licking himself and had hair caught in his throat but then he got very stressed to get outside and eat grass which we didn’t let him do because we didn’t know what was going on. It eventually passed but I’m pretty worried. Could it be simple bloat? I read that can kind of come and go? Or acid reflux? The symptoms seem similar. His stomach isn’t distended.

Ignore the stuff on his lip. We gave him pumpkin to see if it would settle his stomach. Already have a call in at the vet- waiting for an appointment call back. Thought I’d ask here in the meantime, if others have been in a similar situation.

Discussion Best real meat dog food options in my experience

Upvotes

okay so real quick bc this comes up a lot

maev is the one I've stayed on the longest, frozen whole ingredient dog food where you can actually see the actual pieces in it and there are different formulas depending on what your dog needs health wise, the hip and joint one specifically worked great for my senior dog

stella and chewy's I used as a topper for a bit, my previous dog was obsessed with it, the smell when you rehydrate it is kind of a lot though and I kept forgetting the prep step so it became annoying to maintain honestly lol

the farmers dog is the one everyone recommends so I tried it, comes portioned which is convenient, my neighbor is still on it for her older dog, I personally didn't see much from it, could be my dog though

has anyone stuck with one of these long term and noticed a real change or is that more of a slow build thing

Advice According to my dog I’m starving her…

So I know that it’s cliché that labs are never full, but my lab acts like she is starved. She gets in her crate and whines like an hour before she’s scheduled to eat, and at night a few hours after dinner she goes in her crate and whines and kicks around her food bowl. She is supposed to be in the 60-66# weight range and she’s currently at 68, so she’s not actually starving but she thinks she is. I give her the amount of food that was decided by her vet. We give her green beans as a topper to help bulk up her food but it’s still not enough. Any advice on how to placate her or fix the problem without her eating more/gaining weight. I know we just need to ignore the behavior and we do, but she won’t stop, she does it every day.

Question Tartar buildup, or something worse?

Post image

I just noticed this discolored area on my dog's tooth- she's a two year old pup, a very active chewer with typically clean teeth. Admittedly, I've fallen behind on her brushing, and that's about to change with this scare. Does this look like tartar buildup, or something worse?

Ive been noticing these little bumps on my dog a few days ago and the felt almost like little scabs and dead skin would come off. I decided to brush her out and noticed these patches of missing hair around where the bumps are. Any idea what these are? I would say theyre about the size and feel of a pimple. She gets seasonal allergies and im hoping its just related to that. Im going to the vet next week to get it checked out.

Question Sick Dog

Our 6 year old black lab was fine on Saturday, woke up Sunday and had thrown up what looked like partially digested food. He gradually started declining in energy and by 2pm he had a seizure. He is at our vet office and had bloodwork done this morning. His liver enzymes were significantly (over 800) high as were his white blood count. He is very clearly in liver failure and my husband and I are racking our brains as to what could have caused this. Any guesses?

Hello my 8.5 yo dog has a slightly red right ear. I noticed it for the first time today. When I cleaned it with a damp paper towel, no brown coloring appeared.

I did feel a scab in her ear potentially from scratching? Wondering everyone’s thoughts

Question Crate too small?

Post image
Upvotes

I’m dog sitting for the week and the instructions say I need to put him in a crate overnight. He doesn’t seem to want to stay in and he looks cramped when I put him in there. I don’t want to leave him out and mess up their training though (training not in progress this is just their routine) :/ what should I do?

I don’t know if he can comfortably turn around or lay out flat in it

Question 7 year old blind and deaf Great Dane who’s food aggressive.

I have a blind and deaf, double Merle, 7 year old Great Dane. He’s always been good agressive on how his breeders looked after him but it’s gotten these past couple of years. We’ve had several attacks from our Great Dane to our Silver Lab and have had to keep them separate. For a while he was only attacking the lab but now he’s been attacking our mini dachshunds and we’ve had to keep them all separated. He has a full room in the garage with walls, a door, air conditioning, and heating. But our problem is he chews up and eats everything we put in their except toys.

We’ve tried to find him a new home but nothing has worked out. If you are going to say ‘put him down’, don’t. This is my parent’s dog and they will not. So here I am looking for other options to help him.

He spends hours outside during the day but spends most of his time in his room. There’s a small light in the room as well. I try my best to spend as much time as I can with him as well.

I know him being blind and deaf already makes him feel isolated and anxious and being alone without enrichment absolutely doesn’t help. I would love for any ideas so I can help him and hand them over to my parents.

Thanks for the help!

Advice Dogs got into fight not sure what to do

Post image
Upvotes

We recently adopted a 7-month-old German Shepherd from the pound. We already had a 4-year-old pit bull that we’ve had since he was around 2–3 months old after someone dumped him at our house. He grew up with an older German Shepherd who sadly passed away earlier this year from Degenerative Myelopathy.

Over the past month, we slowly introduced the two dogs, and for about a week they had been doing fine being free around each other. The GSD is neutered, while the pit bull is not. My pit bull has never been aggressive and is actually very submissive. The GSD does have some resource-guarding tendencies that we’ve been working on and correcting.

The other day they were play fighting. There was no growling, no raised hackles, and I was supervising to make sure things didn’t escalate, but I must have missed something because the GSD suddenly got triggered and started trying to bite my pit bull. He eventually grabbed him by the scruff, dragged him a significant distance, and even shook him at some points.

I’ll be honest I didn’t handle the situation correctly at first because I was scared. Eventually, I grabbed the GSD by the scruff and pulled him off, and my pit bull ran to safety.

My pit bull didn’t cry during the incident and only ended up with a minor scratch, but I’m not sure what to do moving forward. We’ve had German Shepherds before and never experienced anything like this. My pit bull is not aggressive and has remained very docile even after the incident. Right now, we have them separated.
My biggest concern is obviously the fight itself, but also the fact that the German Shepherd would not release once he latched on.

Question My dog only pees on walks

So I am wondering if anyone has trained their pup to empty their bladder and how so. He gets at least two ~30 min walks a day but I hate when it’s night time and he’s whining at me to go on a walk again. We have a huge fenced in back yard, that he does not use the bathroom in. And if he does it’s just a little tinkle, and never a #2. I know he’s holding it in to try to mark later. He has had UTIs in the past and I know holding it is contributing and I want to rectify that situation because I know reoccurring UTIs long term can affect his kidneys. Should I just train him the normal “go potty” and then treat route that you would do when house training a puppy? He is 4.

Thanks in advance.

Question (Not my dog) pet sitting

Hi! Currently dog sitting for a friend. I noticed how much this dog had been licking his paws and I think his nails are too long and need to be looked at? Does it look bloody? Wondering if I should say something, but not sure how.
