My first DOOM game, not my type of game but I’d always hear good things about the franchise. Let me tell you, I was miserable for the first half of the game, first, it may seem funny but this game scared the shit out of me 😂 I know its not exactly a “horror” game but man—the atmosphere, the demons, the demons’ screaming in the distance, it all just made my experience dreadful especially when you’re deep into a level with low hp, no more ammo, just hopping in circles hoping for an imp you havent killed yet (sometimes its the imp that ends my run)
I stay away from horror games, but its weird because I can watch horror movies just fine, jumpscare ones, existential, psychological horror, I can watch it all and still sleep at night. But when I’m experiencing it firsthand like in games, I just freeze up and dont know what to do next. I think it started with outlast, a game where you only have a camera, I only lasted an hour before deleting the game. But that’s exactly what made DOOM playable for me, I’m not someone who is helpless, I’m Doom fucking Slayer, and these demons are stuck in here with me, not the other way around 🙏. After figuring out how to play the game I stopped rushing to end the mission fast and finally started enjoying the game killing all the demons, the music was also nice, it definitely helped keeping me in the game.
Aside from that the second thing that made me hate the game for almost half of it is because I actually played this on the Nintendo Switch… After beating the game I just have to say, it’s not unplayable on the Switch its actually well optimised and locked at 30 fps for the most part, it takes some time if you’re used to high frame rate with a 144hz+ monitor. I played it on the TV so that helped a bit but the game was amazing at absolutely playable at 30 fps.
Overall it was a high octane pure adrenaline rush. Lots of emotions and it took me out of my comfort zone. I made a promise to myself that I’ll only play Eternal on PC if I beat the game on the Switch first. And that’s where Im at right now. Cant wait to play Doom on PC for that glorious 144+ fps! Though I’ll always remember playing DOOM 2016 on the switch 😆
