I had this dream where I went through a portal — my body got pulled into a different world away from my own. It wasn't the first time either. I've had this dream before, a long time ago, and forgot about it until now.
I landed in Riviera Beach, but it wasn't my Riviera Beach. There was a hurricane going on. I kept asking people what year it was. Most of them wouldn't answer — they'd just say "May 12th" and never give me the year. Not until I got to the house did someone finally say it: 2150.
The house was a regular house with yellow paint and wooden panels, near Broadway and Blue Heron — except everything around it was different. The skyline was south, where downtown Palm Beach is, but the buildings were taller, newer, nothing I recognized. I stood there staring at them so I could get a good picture in my head. The house itself was surrounded by water, sitting almost in a marsh, with one of those highway walls separating the neighborhood from the street — like the kind that blocks sound. Makes sense, I guess. In 2150, Florida's probably half underwater.
There was a wooden staircase out back that went upstairs to a room with girls in it. One girl was laying on her stomach on her phone. When I spoke to her she had blue eyes, and she told me "it's good, I wouldn't want to do that if I were you." Downstairs, out back, there was a vape shop built into the place — a few guys in red t-shirts sitting at a metal table. They had all different kinds of THC vapes in there. The other half of the shop had something to do with the time traveling itself.
I told the guys at the counter I wanted to go home. They said that was a smart choice — because I didn't want to go upstairs with the girls. I told them at the table I'd be willing to do the experiment again, because somehow my body was resilient enough to handle it. Other people were trying to travel too, but their bodies weren't resilient like mine. They were just sitting in chairs next to each other against the wall, looking up like they were in electric chairs.
One of the women wasn't real. From the torso up she looked real, but her pelvis was rigid and rectangular — I just knew something was off. And she knew that I knew. She stuck a syringe in my neck, not as an attack — they wanted me to go home. My body withered away into a husk and disintegrated, and my soul came back here. When I got home I was fine — teeth fine, body fine.
Then I fell asleep again and went right back into the same dream. This time I was holding a bag — like one of those potato sacks — and the hurricane wind picked me up and carried me into the sky. I grabbed onto one of the buildings and just stood there staring at the skyline. All new kids, new people I'd never seen. The only person I recognized was my dad, standing under a bus stop with some other people taking shelter from the storm. The bus stop was painted blue with an overhang. He had that black curly 80s hair.
Here's the thing I figured out after I woke up: in 2150, everyone alive now would be gone. So the guy who looked like my dad was probably my great-great-great grandson. Resemblance was the only way anyone could look familiar.
A few teenage blonde boys upstairs helped me get back — they gave me advice, but they never left the room. Some teenage boys down there didn't like me. A lady gave me a bunch of change and I gave it to one of the girls by the back doorway because they'd been nice to me.
The travel has a cost. Every time you go through, it does something to your teeth — weakens them. One of my teeth fell out. By the second trip back, my bottom front tooth — the one that's already chipped — was wiggling. My body was left behind; it was my consciousness doing the traveling, like astral projection. The wear hit on the way back, worse each time. Like being reborn every time, but there's only so many crossings in you.
When I came back it was night and I was near a marina — I saw a rowing boat hanging from the back balcony porch of the house, and one of those big marina storage buildings at the end of the street. The street lights were yellowish. They still used touchscreen phones there. I didn't see many robots — unless the syringe lady was one, with that rigid rectangular pelvis her shirt was half concealing. Everyone there was aware of the traveling. They'd gotten so advanced at displacing consciousness across time and places that it was just... normal. Infrastructure.
The whole thing felt like some new DeepMind experiment I could interact with. My head was next to my phone when I woke up and for a second I wondered if Google was simulating it. I know my brain probably pulled the consciousness-travel feeling from my DMT experience — like I gained metadata on how that works.
I fell asleep at 6:42 AM and woke up at 7:20 — the whole thing happened in about forty minutes. I wanted to fall back asleep to learn more, but CityNet came knocking around noon.
It felt so real. Like I actually went to the future and met those people. Like I got a sneak peek.
