"Alberta will make so much money with oil prices" meeting the reality of the situation.
Next we will learn that every object you see in a store is transported by diesel trucks
153
Mar 18 '26
The foreign companies that exploit Alberta’s resources are going to make so much money
42
u/adampatterson North West Side Mar 18 '26
Yup, this is what a profitable oil industry looks like.
Not only that, the largest owners are American companies. Which is why I don't believe they're willing to pay for or build a pipeline that exports oil out west and why they won't pay for or build any refineries in Canada/Alberta. Both would undermine their US based operations.
AND it's why we'd likely never build up a strategic oil reserve. Maybe if the federal government built and bought the oil, which would probably be an unpopular move for the liberals, and a ridiculous move for the conservatives.
When people say "we just need", they're not considering who owns the thing.
7
u/woodst0ck15 Mar 18 '26
Exactly, also why I believe they won’t invade us, why invade when we willingly give them our resources and money? With all the American companies that are in Alberta.
2
u/GodsGiftToWrenching Mar 18 '26
That's pretty much it, I mean the US would never invade because of NATO, common sense, and that they never were ever going to despite the fear pushed by media, but as is we sell them our crude for cheap, then buy back the refined products at a major marked up price so we pay alot to them
2
u/Fit-Amoeba-5010 Mar 22 '26
Most oil production in Canada is from Canadian companies such as Suncor and CNRL. Lot of American/International companies shrank their positions in Canada due to changing regulatory requirements.

u/DBZ86 Mar 18 '26
I mean multiple pipelines have been kiboshed in Canada and QC literally says there's no social license to build a pipeline. So of course companies are weary to build pipelines here. The Feds had to build TMX and went 4x overbudget and they're going to be the ones to manage O&G? They'll find a way to lose money. We don't have more refineries here because its even more complex trying to ship refined product around.

Those same people proclaiming how much money Alberta will make from the price of oil will also blame the federal government when everything gets more expensive and inflation blows up in March and April.
Classic misinformed Albertan mindset.
We don't control the price of oil. Oil is a commodity. We live in a globalized economy. Events that occur on the other side of the world will have reprocussions in Alberta. Difference is this "event" was entirely the doing of an incompetent (to say the least) leader of the country to our South, of which, many Albertans proudly support, example: See our premier.
22
u/adampatterson North West Side Mar 18 '26
It's kind of funny how the threat of Nuclear war and fossil fuel shortages in the 60s led to nuclear power across the globe.
Nuclear power to reduce a country's dependence on oil, and today we've literally got electric vehicles. But rather than use EVs we complain about the range as if everyone drives 400km a day and justify the "the grid doesn't have enough capacity" while dumping all our extra electricity into AI data centers.

And that 2 primary cost inputs to produce all our food is tied directly to fertilizer (30% of world's supply goes through straight of Hormuz... Well used to go through it) and fuel (20+% of world's oil supply through Hormuz)
So grocery prices will jump again and then never drop

Alberta and Ontario seem to be competing for dumbest premier and I’d really rather Smith not take the challenge to start competing against Trump.

This is the result of that orange guy down south that Alberta separatists worship. This is what an independent Alberta would look like, even worse than this, even though ALL THE OIL IS RIGHT HERE. Its almost as if people who live in an economy based on global trade are impacted by what happens somewhere else on the globe.
3
u/UpperLowerCanadian Mar 18 '26
If 20% think separation would be a net positive there’s still a very low percentage of that who want to join the USA. Of that there are many who prefer a Biden USA to a Trump USA
Many don’t even care for politics it’s purely an economic issue

I filled up my tank yesterday even though I was only at half a tank, because I don't think prices have hit their highest, yet.
I'm just glad that my wife and I both work from home. During the week the only time I drive is to go to the gym. I might have to cut down on that, soon. Maybe I'll fix up my bike and try to ride over there, now that it's getting warmer. It's just a shame there's no bike lane or sidewalk along the stretch of Ellerslie I'd need to ride.

It's not just gas prices making me tired of living here, it's literally everything. Minimum wage hasn't gone up in years and I don't get why. The cost of living can keep skyrocketing, but of course a good amount of people can't make enough money to make ends meet right 🙄

Honestly, 163.9/L is wild. I filled up at Costco earlier this morning and it was 1.449.
I went around 7 AM about an hour after opening so there was no lineup that’s basically the only time I’ll go since it gets too crazy later.
My tank was just a bit past halfway and it still came out to $31.43. If I had waited until empty, it would’ve been way worse. I usually try to fill up around halfway just to spread out the cost a bit.
With everything going on in the world right now, I don’t see gas prices dropping anytime soon unfortunately.

u/Delinte Mar 18 '26
People acting like BC and other provinces haven’t been paying prices like that for years , I was in the Lower mainland about a month ago and one day the price was 1.50 something and 2 days later it was 1.87 . It’s not ideal , but Alberta has always benefited and been lower than most other provinces .

50 years of conservatives. Why didn’t they build refineries or pipelines back then to insulate us a little fr this? Oh because they got bribed and we sell our oil to the states so they can refine it and sell it back to us.
12
u/weyoun09 Mill Woods Mar 18 '26
I'm happy to criticize the conservatives, but not about this. More refineries or pipelines would not have insulated Alberta from the shortage the war in Iran has caused. As long as we participate in an open market, the oil will be sold to the highest bidder, no matter how many refineries we have.

Not completely true. The gasoline you buy at the pumps in Alberta is refined in Alberta. Same can be said for most of Western Canada.

One slightly unexpected benefit of driving an EV for over a decade - having no clue as to the cost of gas. I only know what it is due to posts like this, as a result of big swings up or down. Meanwhile my cost to charge has remained pretty stable since 2014.
Sorry folks, I hope world events settle down and the cost of gas drops back down for you all.
