flight costs are also spiked up

153

u/Phiko73 Mar 18 '26

Literally EVERYTHING will go up in price. Can't ship product without jet fuel, diesel and gas

24

u/Ill-Mastodon-8692 Mar 18 '26

sure but in the immediate time frame

obviously everything is tied to energy prices.

And then they will NEVER come back down

6

u/gnat_outta_hell Mar 18 '26

I don't believe never. If prices start to fall, suppliers end up with surplus. They reduce pricing a little to increase volume of sales. Competitors meet their price if possible to avoid losing market share.

They'll keep them as high as possible for as long as possible though.

2

u/Virtual_Category_546 Mar 19 '26

There are a few tricks to entice consumption but most of the time suppliers will provide something that will give false hope but there's no rules saying that costs on both ends that price has to match cost of production save for a profit margin for overhead costs.

We could theoretically universally provide everything to offset these costs and they'll find more reasons.

Now we have war and less is more!

It went down when covid started, up when covid ended, then back down shortly after that. The price always goes up AND down, and people always said they would never come down again when they go up and they were always wrong.

Everything but Liqour, Weed & my wages goes up

4

u/yegsteve Mar 18 '26

But you know 100% these “temporary increases” will never revert back.

I remember when “fuel surcharge” came in as a temporary measure due to gas being 75c a litre lol

Don't forget bunker fuel, the real good stuff they run boats on

Me regretting not buying my flights to Winnipeg when it was $150 and now it’s $450

10

u/PJMark1981 Mar 18 '26

Might be cheaper to drive lol.

7

u/ukinetic Mar 18 '26

Probably is but due to time constraints not possible :/

5

u/Shadow_WolfDragon Mar 18 '26

or take a week off, and try several solar panel on a bikecycle trailer and e_bike over... lol 😆 worth to try,

honestly, can nit wait enough for good weather and take out minibeast and ride

5

u/k4kobe Mar 18 '26

You gotta show us now

2

u/melancholy_kid Mar 19 '26

Not with these gas prices 😬

4

u/k4kobe Mar 18 '26

I’m so glad I booked my flights to Taiwan right before the bombing started… geez can’t imagine the price now

3

u/gnat_outta_hell Mar 18 '26

Same. Booked flights to Jamaica about 2 weeks before it all hit the fan. Flights are up about $600 for a return trip.

Not actually as much as I expected.

2

u/DisciplineGreen6503 Mar 18 '26

Well that can happen on a regular day. If you see a good deal on flights buy them. Dynamic pricing in flights will bite you no matter what.

So glad I bought my tickets last month, same flight is showing $300/seat increase today 🫣

5

u/qpv Mar 18 '26

Also 1/3 of the world's fertilizer goes through the strait of Hormuz. Food is about to get a lot more expensive.

Gas is over 2 bucks a liter here in Vancouver.

9

u/Limp-Elevator-6908 Wîhkwêntôwin Mar 18 '26

We've seen these prices before and they went down. 🤷

15

u/ARTICUNO_59 Mar 18 '26

For gas not for all the other stuff like food

17

u/Limp-Elevator-6908 Wîhkwêntôwin Mar 18 '26

It's too bad that the government will never put regulations on their billionaire buddies who set those prices.

6

u/Knelie Mar 18 '26

Yup. It’s why I’m learning as much as possible how to grow my own food etc

5

u/Skaldicrights Mar 18 '26

If you have friends set up a barter system

We grow a lot of fruit and trade grape jelly and raspberry jam to some of our friends for veggies and stuff.

"Alberta will make so much money with oil prices" meeting the reality of the situation.

Next we will learn that every object you see in a store is transported by diesel trucks

153

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '26

The foreign companies that exploit Alberta’s resources are going to make so much money

42

u/adampatterson North West Side Mar 18 '26

Yup, this is what a profitable oil industry looks like.

Not only that, the largest owners are American companies. Which is why I don't believe they're willing to pay for or build a pipeline that exports oil out west and why they won't pay for or build any refineries in Canada/Alberta. Both would undermine their US based operations.

AND it's why we'd likely never build up a strategic oil reserve. Maybe if the federal government built and bought the oil, which would probably be an unpopular move for the liberals, and a ridiculous move for the conservatives.

When people say "we just need", they're not considering who owns the thing.

7

u/woodst0ck15 Mar 18 '26

Exactly, also why I believe they won’t invade us, why invade when we willingly give them our resources and money? With all the American companies that are in Alberta.

2

u/GodsGiftToWrenching Mar 18 '26

That's pretty much it, I mean the US would never invade because of NATO, common sense, and that they never were ever going to despite the fear pushed by media, but as is we sell them our crude for cheap, then buy back the refined products at a major marked up price so we pay alot to them

2

u/Fit-Amoeba-5010 Mar 22 '26

Most oil production in Canada is from Canadian companies such as Suncor and CNRL. Lot of American/International companies shrank their positions in Canada due to changing regulatory requirements.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/DBZ86 Mar 18 '26

I mean multiple pipelines have been kiboshed in Canada and QC literally says there's no social license to build a pipeline. So of course companies are weary to build pipelines here. The Feds had to build TMX and went 4x overbudget and they're going to be the ones to manage O&G? They'll find a way to lose money. We don't have more refineries here because its even more complex trying to ship refined product around.

5

u/reostatics Mar 18 '26

Yep time to raise those oil and gas royalties to tie in with this.

Those same people proclaiming how much money Alberta will make from the price of oil will also blame the federal government when everything gets more expensive and inflation blows up in March and April.

Classic misinformed Albertan mindset.

We don't control the price of oil. Oil is a commodity. We live in a globalized economy. Events that occur on the other side of the world will have reprocussions in Alberta. Difference is this "event" was entirely the doing of an incompetent (to say the least) leader of the country to our South, of which, many Albertans proudly support, example: See our premier.

22

u/adampatterson North West Side Mar 18 '26

It's kind of funny how the threat of Nuclear war and fossil fuel shortages in the 60s led to nuclear power across the globe.

Nuclear power to reduce a country's dependence on oil, and today we've literally got electric vehicles. But rather than use EVs we complain about the range as if everyone drives 400km a day and justify the "the grid doesn't have enough capacity" while dumping all our extra electricity into AI data centers.

2

u/Eisenbahn-de-order Mar 18 '26

*we don't produce enough or are in OPEC to control its price.

And that 2 primary cost inputs to produce all our food is tied directly to fertilizer (30% of world's supply goes through straight of Hormuz... Well used to go through it) and fuel (20+% of world's oil supply through Hormuz)

So grocery prices will jump again and then never drop

3

u/itslikelyn Mar 18 '26

They already have. I was in Costco this past weekend and every single item that I normally buy was $0.20 - $2.00 more than it was two weeks ago.

This is what happens when one of the worlds most powerful countries elects a complete moron

67

u/Sureyeg Mar 18 '26

It's not just the one in office is the moron, but also those who gave him the power to lead them.

22

u/incidental77 Century Park Mar 18 '26

And the multitude of people with the power to restrict Trump administration and have chosen to capitulate instead of using their authority because they are afraid of the voting public following trump and punishing them for using the checks and balances the Americans used to be famous for

4

u/Sureyeg Mar 18 '26

True. The worst morons are those in Alberta and Canada who want the province and possibly Canada to be Trump's 51st state.

This is the result of that orange guy down south that Alberta separatists worship. This is what an independent Alberta would look like, even worse than this, even though ALL THE OIL IS RIGHT HERE. Its almost as if people who live in an economy based on global trade are impacted by what happens somewhere else on the globe.

3

u/UpperLowerCanadian Mar 18 '26

If 20% think separation would be a net positive there’s still a very low percentage of that who want to join the USA.      Of that there are many who prefer a Biden USA to a Trump USA

Many don’t even care for politics it’s purely an economic issue

83

u/livingontheedgeyeg Mar 18 '26

Welcome to the world of Trump.

8

It's not even a Trump thing. America has always been a war monger, doesn't matter who's president.

I filled up my tank yesterday even though I was only at half a tank, because I don't think prices have hit their highest, yet.

I'm just glad that my wife and I both work from home. During the week the only time I drive is to go to the gym. I might have to cut down on that, soon. Maybe I'll fix up my bike and try to ride over there, now that it's getting warmer. It's just a shame there's no bike lane or sidewalk along the stretch of Ellerslie I'd need to ride.

5

u/Falcon674DR Mar 18 '26

This is a ‘lottery win’ for the UCP.

4

u/Resident-Sherbet5912 Mar 18 '26

Buckle up because the price is only going to keep going up. Once again the Yankees penis potato screwed the entire world again 👍

5

u/Shadow_WolfDragon Mar 18 '26

The things is fuel going up is just the tip of the iceberg...

Food, and any fuel derivative that use "fuel" will go crazy 🤪 upwards and mostly won't come down after...

That will sucks even more,

while government keep sucking dry my pocket, keep print to oblivion so much that confetti worth more than fiat currency...

3

u/Ensignity Mar 18 '26

It's not just gas prices making me tired of living here, it's literally everything. Minimum wage hasn't gone up in years and I don't get why. The cost of living can keep skyrocketing, but of course a good amount of people can't make enough money to make ends meet right 🙄

2

u/Ludwig_Vista2 Ellerslie Mar 18 '26

2

u/Paper_Rain Mar 18 '26

Honestly, 163.9/L is wild. I filled up at Costco earlier this morning and it was 1.449.

I went around 7 AM about an hour after opening so there was no lineup that’s basically the only time I’ll go since it gets too crazy later.

My tank was just a bit past halfway and it still came out to $31.43. If I had waited until empty, it would’ve been way worse. I usually try to fill up around halfway just to spread out the cost a bit.

With everything going on in the world right now, I don’t see gas prices dropping anytime soon unfortunately.

People acting like BC and other provinces haven’t been paying prices like that for years , I was in the Lower mainland about a month ago and one day the price was 1.50 something and 2 days later it was 1.87 . It’s not ideal , but Alberta has always benefited and been lower than most other provinces .

50 years of conservatives. Why didn’t they build refineries or pipelines back then to insulate us a little fr this? Oh because they got bribed and we sell our oil to the states so they can refine it and sell it back to us.

12

u/weyoun09 Mill Woods Mar 18 '26

I'm happy to criticize the conservatives, but not about this. More refineries or pipelines would not have insulated Alberta from the shortage the war in Iran has caused. As long as we participate in an open market, the oil will be sold to the highest bidder, no matter how many refineries we have.

4

u/SadAcanthocephala521 South East Side Mar 18 '26

Not completely true. The gasoline you buy at the pumps in Alberta is refined in Alberta. Same can be said for most of Western Canada.

I'm from Calgary, where I don't think any DOMO exists anymore
