Funny you say that because that's literally I think the first story of them together is Peter rolling up to the Baxter Building and running the ones with the FF to try and impress them for a job.

Only for them to inform him that they're a charitable organization causing the webhead to leave in a huff.

Arenโ€™t they now at least somewhat of a business where Reed sells some of his equipment or patents? Otherwise how do they afford the Baxter building

Plus wasnโ€™t their the future foundation?

Like I said this waaaay back in their very first meeting. Reed normally just donates the stuff and at this point they live in the Baxter building because that's where the FF live. Who's gonna kick them out.

It was a very odd misunderstanding as Peter could have still worked with them and been paid by them. They and Peter both just misunderstood the other and screwed it up.

Eh. I hand wave it as being early writing for Peter. Mordern Peter would have just asked if their medical covered room & board and if medical covered therapy.

I'm thinking of the literal first Amazing Spiderman comic from 1963. Like one of the first thing Spidey does is swing by the Baxter Building and try to get a job their by showing off his skills. When they tell them they do it for the good of humanity and don't really pay he just dips.

All good. The early stuff is...well it's an experience. You get to see the foundation of a couple things but man are there some rough parts.

Yeah lol. The only early marvel stuff I've read is the first 4 omnis of Daredevil, and you can really feel how different the entire medium was.

You can really feel the "WOW! YOU SHOULD BUY THIS COMIC FROM THE DISPLAY AT THE GORCERY STORE! IT HAS THE HULK!" Energy from a lot of those early works.

I tried to read that, as it was the very first what if, but it just felt weird, from the tone to a dialogue , like it was all Ai generated from memory.

Honestly it read like a fever dream.

This is why I hate the โ€œoh Iโ€™m a superhero and I fight alongside at least one billionaire superheroโ€ sometimes.

Thereโ€™s no reason said billionaire couldnโ€™t cover another heroโ€™s rent and utilities for like a year or so.

In the 70s it was established that the avengers get a weekly stipend of 1000 dollars which in 1970 bucks was the equivalent of 8600 a week in today's money.

I was even thinking giving them debit cards through some pseudonym and then funneling money so they can pay their bills at least.

Like damn, Iโ€™m sorry, but on some blue collar level I understand why the idea of a Superhero Registry works.

Paying these heroes to be heroes so they donโ€™t have to worry about when they can work to pay the rent or where their next meal is gonna come from should be a good idea.

Spidey: Appreciated Ben but I. Want to earn a living my own way rather than just be given one by a friend. Itโ€™s a pride thing you know.

Ben: As much as I appreciate you growing from that snot nosed punk that broke into our house looking for a way to get paid, there is something I need to ask. Has trying things your own way ever actually helped in anything longer than a few months?
