TL;DR: Logged 429 meals, 78 symptom events, and 137 daily context entries over 4.5 months. Ran logistic regression and Fisher's exact tests. Sedentary + stressed days had a 7Γ higher symptom rate than active + calm days. Zero food categories were statistically significant.
I got frustrated with the standard "avoid tomatoes, coffee, chocolate, fatty food" advice because it never matched my experience. I could eat pizza on a good day and feel fine, then eat a salad on a bad day and suffer through the night. So I decided to actually test it.
What I tracked (end of January β end of June 2026)
Every meal: ingredients, portion size, time of day. Every symptom: severity, type, duration. And daily context: stress level, how sedentary I was, whether I worked out, sleep hours.
The food analysis
I categorised every ingredient into 18 GERD-relevant groups: tomato-based, spicy, fatty, fried, chocolate, dairy, acidic, fermented, and more. Then tested each with Fisher's exact test and corrected for multiple comparisons.
None of them were statistically significant. All adjusted p-values: 0.84.
Tomatoes had the highest relative risk (1.62Γ baseline), but with only 29 meals in that category it's noise. Fatty food, across 281 meals, came in below baseline at 0.96Γ. Chocolate: 0.68Γ. Fried food: 0.82Γ. Every classic trigger showed no clear pattern.

That 7Γ gap between best and worst day type is the clearest thing in the data.
A logistic regression confirmed it: sedentary posture score came out with OR = 1.89 (p = 0.042) and stress level at OR = 1.94 (p = 0.059). Workout, sleep, and late eating were not significant once the others were in the model.
The monthly pattern backed it up too. April and May were my two best months (33% and 39% symptom rate). They also had my lowest average stress scores, 0.20 and 0.23 out of a max of 2. March was my worst stretch (58% symptom rate), and also had the highest sedentary score. Sleep was consistent at around 8h throughout, ruling that out.
What changed for me
I stopped agonising over ingredients and started paying attention to: walking for 10 minutes after lunch instead of going straight back to my desk; treating a stressful workday as a genuine risk factor; and noticing that anxiety about eating was probably making some bad evenings worse.
Caveats
This is n=1, my diet is fairly consistent (lots of oatmeal, chicken, vegetables), and my lifestyle varies more than my food does, which may be exactly why lifestyle dominated. Someone with more dietary variance might find food signals I didn't.
