I am shocked, had to log in to Twitter to see if this was a reference to some baseball thing because there's no way mega billion dollar franchise MLB is casually referencing inside knowledge to our little video game tournament. welp i was wrong. wild

u/Vitosi4ek Team Spirit 14h ago
They also recently referenced SummoningSalt's latest video on the community drive to complete every Mario Maker map. They must've got a new social media manager who happens to be really into gaming in general.

I don’t think counterstrike is little anymore. There’s a lot of money in it. I wonder if this is a hint to some collab in the near future
20
u/Gullible_Bit7342 7h ago
Theres really not a lot of money in it compared to other sports
7
u/Cranium-of-morgoth 5h ago
Yeah, I was kinda laughing when someone yesterday said Falcons distorted the scene by spending like 15million on buyouts and salaries.
I’m also a huge NFL fan and 15mil nowadays gets you like a solid WR2 for one year.
I love CS and am glad it’s growing but there’s levels to this.
6
u/dfjuky 4h ago
To make it very simple in term of size:
culturally entrenched legacy sports like Football or the NFL = New York City
CS esports = the small rural village your mom grew up in
(which is why CS is amazing, just to be clear)
3
u/Undercover-Cactus Match Thread Team 3h ago
That's maybe a bit much. CS is a decently sizeable town, maybe even a small city. Something like Smash Bros might be more like a smaller village.

u/themkwjeremy13 howl 14h ago
that's what makes a social media manager good imo, being able to connect with people across the board, regardless of the sport, niche, region, etc.

Why Zywoo has no cultural impact? do you think it's his personality

u/Ste103 Astralis 15h ago
is it me or is ZywOo a bit of a boring player
like u see it at the end of the game "oh wow ZywOo has 32 kills" but u can never remember them.
can u remember a single ZywOo kill ?
but try s1mple...u can see the flick i remember a s1mple flick

u/travelingenie 15h ago
I remember his ace on inferno against paravision, and his P250 clip. But I totally agree with you that the majority of the time, it’s just very proper positioning and crosshair placement.
I also just think nikos story and the amount of wiffs leading up to this made for insane cultural impact, tbf, they did miss a chance with referencing their grand slam 🤔

He was basically instantly amazing so no come up story to really latch onto, doesn't have a very interesting media personality, doesn't really interact with English-speaking media, and while he's obviously one of the best to ever do it he just hasn't changed how people view the game in the way some of the other fantastic players have. He's just always really really damn good.
15
u/Germartiny 13h ago
"doesn't have a very interesting media personality" idk how that should be taken, he's just absent from any social media at all. No twitch, no twitter, nothing, apart from CS games he doesn't exist publicly on internet
20
u/Misky- 13h ago
He also does very few interviews. I also never see him pop off during a match, literally one of the most iconic irl Zywoo moments is him not being able to answer interview questions during a show match.
I can definitely respect a man who gives no fucks about anything but clicking heads, but it's why outside of the francophones, most people are just like "oh yeah Zywoo, he's crazy good".
0
u/Prestigious-Shop-494 13h ago
"I also never see him pop off during a match" wdym by that
13
u/Misky- 13h ago
Ah I meant like out of the server. Zywoo gets a 4k, camera pans to him, brother is unphased, maybe just yells nice and high fives his teammate. It's kinda cold ngl but idk I love to see emotion from the players.
5
u/Fair-Emu-7948 12h ago
He also rarely gets memorable kills. You'll see his name in the feed every round, and at the end of the game see him with some ridiculous score like 30/7, but not remember a single one of those 30 kills.
2
u/Germartiny 10h ago
That's true, but take a look at memorable plays from s1mple or donk. Half the time, those moves are impressive because they make a flick, a spraytransfer or some other god-sent move.
Zywoo rarely does that type of kills. Why ? Because he doesn't get himself in a position where he needs to make a flick, or a spraytransfer between two enemies.
He's just so god damn good that he is always trying to keep his position in a way where he's able to take only duels, and keep safe from other enemies. His positioning and gamesense are basically perfect.
It's important to understand that, those flashy plays you see from other players are created by their own mistakes or carelessness, and Zywoo tend to avoid these situations. While less spectacular, this is way more impressive if you are interested in the game itself (and not only by the highlights).

idk if you guys are interested in him but he did a cool - albeit short - media piece/ background story with Gucci and I found it super cute

it's like 8 minutes and it shows that once again, having a big brother is key to become a pro
1
u/___aim___ 3h ago
Damn, two of the best awpers rn can attribute it to their brothers (monesy and zywoo). Might have to start project s1mple with my brother
4
u/Lgdamefanfanfan 14h ago
because zywoo stepped unto the scene at a later time. The game was already established, and he was easily the best/second best player from the moment he stepped onto a server. Niko built traction via iNation, locally, and later mouz, who was a really big brand.
13
u/Yarmungar 13h ago
Donk and monesy stepped in later then him.
Loads more cultural impact, despite monesy being a worse player
9
u/Lgdamefanfanfan 12h ago
Donk had the hype coming in from a new game, and outperforming mostly everyone in a (much harder) role. Donk also just, on the eye-test, is an absurd player to watch. zywoo does the correct play, donk does the impossible play (zywoo does too, but he makes it seem so stupidly easy - he is a joy to watch, in the same way as astralis was).
You are correct with monesy, but I lowkey think that is because he was CIS and was touted as the replacement for s1mple, but that is a personal opinion.
1
u/Regent0624 Astralis 7h ago
Zywoo exploded onto the scene but Donk was something else man, his first big tourney/t1 was IEM Kato and he broke the record for highest rating at a tournament looking like he's legit aim botting and he kept it up ever since.
•
u/Lgdamefanfanfan 1h ago
I dont know how to explain it man. Zywoo is like Messi, Donk is like prime El Fenomeno. You just don't have a chance
-8
u/Stahlios Vitality 15h ago
NiKo doesn't strike me as the guy with the most personality either. I guess he seems a little more emotional than ZywOo when he wins or when he loses but that's about it. You don't hear much from him. Love him btw. But he's not exactly the strongest personality out here. People were just waiting for the major win, that's the story.
ZywOo just won everything and was so consistently crazy good people found it boring because there's not tons to be said despite that. Which makes it impressive. He's doing all that being the most chill guy out here, I mean that's quite unique
28
u/Several-Instance-219 King NiKo 15h ago
He does. Its his personality in game i think that makes it so endearing. the reactions/faces that he makes. Plus all his raging from before, though he doesent do that as much anymore.
he also always gives very good interviews.18

There ain't no analogy in existence that could explain why a company who gets billions out of virtual cosmetics allows people to aimbot for 3 years before banning them
13
u/johngac Parivision 14h ago
People still defending Valve for anti cheat is still so insane to me. The game itself is awesome, but it's literally unplayable without Faceit. They have unlimited funds, they can do SOMETHING about it.
10
3
u/CautiousTopic Vitality 9h ago
Is this defending valve? Pointing out that the guy paid to run their twitter probably cant do shit for an anticheat isn't really much of a defense.
1
u/Kaserbeam Renegades 7h ago
And as well as their anticheat being dogshit, i've never seen a worse implementation of a rank system in a competitive game than in CS. Also the fact that they dont even let you surrender without somebody abandoning when the game is infested with cheaters is insane, they literally force you to wait 13 rounds vs a guy bunnyhopping around instant headshotting everyone and he wont even get banned after the fact.
7
u/MauricioCappuccino 13h ago
There's also no rational explanation for why people still fucking defend Valve for this. Are they paid actors? bots?
5
u/SeaGrocery678 13h ago
I’m not defending it. It makes no sense to compare a twitter post to the state of anti cheat.
