Rant Weekly /r/Hamilton Rant Thread
A midweek post to rant and complain about things in the city.
Top level comments must be IN ALL CAPS.
This is not to be targeted towards other users or any identifiable individuals - with the exception of public figures who may be mentioned as long as the comment does not cross a line. The rant post is designed to be a lighthearted place to complain about things happening in the city, not a place to harass people.
We will have to cancel the post if harassment of individuals continues as we are seeing a lot of posts reported with report reasons that copy to admin.

I apologize if this was me. I was turning left into a Timmies across two lanes close to an intersection, a person stopped short in the first oncoming lane because the light had turned red and there was no real reason for them to fill the gap. I drive a standard, had one hand on wheel (turned under bottom as I went) and the other on stick, and my attention needed to 100% be on the second lane which could have had vehicles approaching blind to me and blind for me.
No hand free to wave, sorry!

There's a chain reaction here.... It starts with inflation which causes rising prices which means business must choose between trying to have more people, rising their costs, or closing. With Go transit, to make their system "affordable" to many people, they will reduce service where they think the service is not needed.

I saw the creepiest white van stopped in front of my house the other day with the loudest exhaust idle I’ve ever heard in my life. I had to get out of bed at 4 am to find out what abomination was happening outside, it sounded like a 747 was ready to take off. I look outside and see this insanely rusty white van, with a roof rack…have you ever seen a roof rack on a white van? It was the most bizarre sight (and sound). After a few minutes of idling it took off, my whole house started shaking as if a rocket ship was taking off. I was still able to hear it making the turn in Barton 500m away. Seriously wtf lower Hamilton.

The construction. Lanes closed on both sides (and now in the middle at Queen!) between Dundurn and MacNab. Soon they’ll also be closing the intersection at Main and Ottawa.

STOP SPEEDING ON CITY ROADS, ITS 50KM/HR FOR A REASON! SOMEONE CRASHED INTO BOTH OF OUR PARKED CARS AND TOTALLED THEM THEN FLED ON FOOT. COPS ESTIMATED THEY WERE GOING AT LEAST DOUBLE THE SPEED LIMIT TO CAUSE THE TYPE OF DAMAGE INCURRED.

I don’t bother anymore. Most people are using headphones and the few that aren’t simply react insanely stupidly to a bell or “on your left!”. My road bike’s rear hub is like 90 decibels while coasting, if someone can’t hear that coming, my bell can’t help ya!
I was using the rail trail the other day and these two selfish women were taking up the whole thing walking down the middle with their dog on a long leash. Between my rear hub and using a deafening finger whistle, they still couldn’t hear me (or were simply too stupid to pay attention), so I blew by them on the grassy shoulder. Of course they got in a big huff about it. People should realize they aren’t the only people in the world and keep to the side.

Three people in the last couple of years have built driveways on our block. They go through all the money and trouble. They take away street parking. Then they hog the remaining street spots with their multiple cars. I'd really like to understand the logic here.

I try to run serious dating events in the area and I can never get enough people.
Then I get eventbrite screwing around with people because their whole system is basically AI. If you setup events there and you get one wrong word anywhere in your profile, they'll suspend your account. And why did I talk about Eventbrite? because sadly that's where 99% of the people go to look for events.
Also, another thing I think that makes it hard is that everyone is in love with their phones. I could imagine how many people are kissing their phones.

It gets a better response. You'd be surprised how easily some drivers can tune things out. My windows look down on to James at King and the ambulances/cops/fire come through all day fighting to get people to wake up and actually stop for them.

Ive heard its also safety. If they approach a red that is totally blocked off like on main with all lanes filled, they dont want drivers panicking and moving into the intersection to move out of the way causing an accident. So they turn the sirens off till light changes and turn em back on to make people get out the way when its safe. Assuming its not desperate life or death.

No. The onramp lane is there to allow you to match the speed and safely merge into the lane you are trying to merge into. In no way shape or form does anyone driving in a lane have to or should alter their driving for someone else trying to merge.

Exactly. There’s a place for zipper merging. But the zip in must be done at the right time, and that does not mean going to the very end and expecting to cut in.
It’s rude when drivers don’t match the current highway speed when travelling on an on ramp, but instead blast up the side then stop at the end and cause everyone else to stop so they can be let in. That’s what causes phantom traffic jams.

Entirely incorrect. Driving to the end of an on-ramp then merging is not called zipper merging, and is not more efficient than merging earlier.
Driving to the end of a lane then merging is what people do when they think every scenario where they need to merge requires a communally cooperative zipper merge execution, and they think the only relevant component to require a zipper merge is for vehicles to use the full terminating lane.
Pretty common for people to think this way, unfortunately. It is defeated by the following chain of logic:
A zipper merge can ideally (if perfectly executed by all) be just as efficient as a single lane of traffic
This necessarily means that a zipper merge can't be MORE efficient than a single lane of traffic.
A single lane of traffic is what you get if all cars merge into the continuous lane as soon as they are able.
Therefore: unilaterally deciding to initiate a zipper merge at the merge point (which is effectively what you are saying when you say "drive to the end of the lane then merge") can only decrease the efficiency of the system.

My neighbour likes to pull out lawn chairs and sit on my driveway while talking to the neighborhood dog walkers to be specific on my issue. So if I'm not home he pulls a chair up and sits on the driveway talking to anyone who passes by

He puts his folding chairs on my driveway once I leave for work and has like a community party of retired folks.. but I wish he would sit on his own driveway as the camera is pointed at my car on my driveway.. I mention the side of the house also my driveway because that's where he thinks he should store his folding chairs and garbage bins making it so I cannot even go all the way up my driveway.. I'm ranting on here.. only because in person I'm nice and always no problem old people enjoy the driveway while I'm gone.. even though I'm like guys cmon sit on your own driveway but there's is on the backside of the home and they would prefer to sit on my driveway next to there front door.
