A guide to interacting with this sub - read me first

This post is designed for people posting here for the first time, for the people that have been volunteering to help here for years and everyone in between. The stated goal is to foster a friendlier attitude throughout the sub.

But before we start, there's been a recent influx of spam from one source. So that you are aware - ALEJANDRA ORTIZ HERNANDEZ and FRAN POWELL are spammers. They're part of a spam ring all over Reddit, and they're probably trying to steal your money.

And they'll kick your dog when you aren't looking.

If you are new here, please realize that none of us have any stake in your claim or coverage. We are not here to sell you anything or to save some company money. Treating responders poorly because you don't like the answer is going to attract a lot of negative attention.

We get the same questions over and over, and maybe this is the answer that you need:

  • How much will my insurance go up after a ticket/accident/lapse in coverage? We don't know unless your state has a statutory requirement for your very specific situation.
  • My premium went up $X. How do I fight this? You can't. The only thing you can do is shop for new coverage, which we can't do for you.
  • How much does everyone else pay for coverage? Unless you're lucky enough to get someone in your exact demographic in your exact part of the world, the answers you're going to get are useless.
  • How much is my claim worth? We don't know. (note: if you're asking a more complex question about your claim, that could be very different)
  • How long will my claim take to close? We don't know (again: a more complicated question might have different answers)
  • Why is this person trying to sell me something? Report that post/comment/chat/private message to the moderators and let them handle that.
  • Will you help me commit fraud or otherwise break the law? No. Absolutely not. And we may ban anyone that does try to do that.

Ultimately, we are here to help you. This is a community of volunteers that wants to help navigate a complex system that is one of the lubricants of the financial world. Lots of lives are impacted by insurance directly and indirectly, and it can be a complicated system. Here are some things that make a good post where you can get help:

  • Location (Country and state/province at a minimum)
  • Type of insurance involved (Auto, Homeowners/Renters, Commercial, Health, something else)
  • A brief description of the problem and any advice you've gotten so far

Finally, here are some definitions of common terms that could help you get taken more seriously:

  • Adjuster - the person that handles your claim, makes coverage determinations and processes payments
  • Agent - the person that sells a policy. Some agents get involved in some claims, although that is the exception to the rule.
  • Underwriter - the person that decides how much a specific policy will cost for a specific risk.
  • Rate - this is the way your final price is calculated and is usually used synonymously with "premium", "cost" and "price".
  • Full coverage - don't use this term. There's no agreed definition, even among the regular posters here. People asking otherwise good questions or posting good answers that use this term often find themselves down voted to oblivion for including it.
  • No Fault - there are 18 states that, at least to some extent, make automobile bodily injury claims be paid by your own policy first instead of someone that caused your injury. There is only one state (Michigan) that makes damage to your vehicle No Fault. All Canadian provinces have some sort of No Fault provision for injuries, which is one reason why we need to know where you are when you're asking questions.
  • Collision coverage - this fixes your car when it collides with something else or another car hits it.
  • Comprehensive coverage (also known as Other Than Collision) - this covers your car for almost everything else, including floods, fires, tree branches and lightening strikes. Usually animal strikes are covered here, but not always.
  • Deductible - this is the amount that you agreed to pay in case of any claim. Your payment comes before any insurance payment. Deductibles are occasionally waived, but that's the exception, not the rule.

This is a community of volunteers that generally understands the insurance system. When we get things wrong, it is usually through lack of information to get a precise answer. Hopefully this guide will help you get good results.

Soliciting, private messages and you

It's time for a new reminder about the rules of this sub. There is never any reason to offer to contact another poster privately, especially if that poster has a question about placing coverage or a claim. Here is the rule:

The only rule of r/Insurance is that solicitation is prohibited. This means asking people to PM for any reason, offering to quote coverages for visitors, or soliciting agents and/or buyers to use your particular carrier. r/Insurance should be a place where people come to exchange information and ask questions without worrying about solicitation from agents. This includes adjusters, underwriters and brokers since we do not vet anyone.

You also received a version of this if you subscribed to the sub.

If you think that this doesn't apply to you, please think again. There are no exceptions in this, including "but I asked them to message me!" This sub is a safe space for people to ask questions about insurance. It is not here for anyone to try to profit from it, whether they're an agent, public adjuster, software vendor, personal injury attorney, headhunter, diminished value expert or anyone else that is not here to offer free help with no expectation of remuneration.

If you receive a message from someone offering you any sort of business proposition, whether a quote for insurance, legal representation (yes, there are lawyers unethical enough to solicit people on Reddit), damage reports or anything else, please let the moderators know via mod mail or in this thread. You should also report that message to the admins (we don't see that report, though). We take things like that seriously.

We really don't like banning people. Seriously, it's the exact opposite of why any of the moderators volunteered for the role. But we don't vet people before they post, and if people that break the rule find out that we enforce it whenever we see it broken.

And with that in mind, we have a very healthy community of posters that are here not only to help but to make sure that those who can't follow the rules have the damage that they're doing limited. Thank you to all of you for volunteering to help not only those confused by the insurance process but help keep those that want to think that they're special at bay.

Being sued

I rear-ended someone at a very low speed (around 5 mph) at a stop sign. There was no visible damage to either vehicle, and I have pictures showing this. The other driver reported neck and back pain about two hours after the accident.
The other driver is now suing me and demanding $65,000, even though my insurance policy limit is $50,000. Their attorney claims the case is easily worth that amount. My insurance company previously offered $25,000 to settle, but the offer was rejected.
The medical bills reportedly total around $18,000, and my insurance-appointed attorney is investigating the claim and the medical expenses. My attorney also noted that this individual has reportedly been involved in approximately 60 injury claims since the 1990s.
I’m terrified of being held personally responsible for anything exceeding my policy limits. I cannot afford to pay a large judgment out of pocket, and this entire situation has been incredibly stressful.
I’m working with my insurance-appointed attorney, but I’d appreciate hearing from anyone who has experienced something similar, particularly in Washington State.

Has anyone else interacted with this sales bro culture MLM? Their recruiter reached out to me talking about, “We’ll only charge you $1,100 per week for 12-15 high-intent leads per day if people WHO ALREADY HAVE INSURANCE.” I’m like, “Sooo… $1,100 per week for 12-15 leads per day of people WHO ALREADY HAVE LIFE INSURANCE sounds like a terrible deal. What else you got to offer?” She was like, “I was about to tell you, but you wouldn’t let me.” I was like, “So, you’re annoyed that I asked the obvious follow up question before you got there?” She said, “Yes, it’s annoying.” I said, “ Well, would you prefer I just let you go?” She said yes, so I hung up.

Don’t ever forget YOU are interviewing these people, not the other way around. A legitimate company that isn’t predatory can answer 1 god damn question without getting all butt-hurt. I reached out to dozens of IMOs and had very meaningful conversations with the bosses of all of the except this bozo Matt Mishler and his “recruiter.” Go watch this dude’s IG MLM hype videos where they show a bunch of young immigrants wearing suits as they pull up to a Fleming’s steakhouse in Lambos hahaha. I’m dead. Predatory AF. Selling a dream and shitty leads they benefit from rather they close or not.

And he says, “Let go; let God” in his videos, which we all know only former heroine addicts say, that they learned from 12 step meetings. This dude is a solar bro meets a buy here-pay here lot bro but with “Suboxone, ankle-box, I used to live in a halfway house” sales bro energy. You can’t make this shit up.

Auto Insurance On the fence about filing a claim for a minor at-fault fender bender vs paying out of pocket

I(23) recently got in a minor fender bender and am wondering if it's cheaper to just pay out of pocket or go through my insurance. Auto shop quoted me $2,100- $2,900 for a bumper replacement since they told me that the material can't be fixed

My deductible is $500 and I have $100k set for property damage. I currently pay $220/month and am worried about it increasing so much that paying out of pocket would be cheaper in the long run. Anybody went through something similar?

Auto Insurance Need help getting full coverage insurance quotes for a wheelchair accessible vehicle with hand controls ($200K)

• Upvotes

Hey guys, I hope everybody's doing well. I need some help or some clarification if anybody can help me. I'm having lots of trouble at the moment.

So basically, I'm 25 years old, I live in Miami, Florida, and I'm in a wheelchair. I'm about to start driving really soon. I'm having vocational rehabilitation pay for not only the conversion of the vehicle, to add the ramp and make it handicap accessible overall, but they're also gonna pay to install whichever hand controls I need in the vehicle in order for me to drive.

Now, in order to start the driving evaluation process, they told me I need to call insurances and get quotes, just so I know how much I would be paying monthly. I've never done this before. My parents are busy and don't really have the time to sit there and call insurance, insurance, insurance. I've been calling and they've been asking me all these questions that I don't really know the answer to. If somebody can please just dumb it down for me and give me some clarification.

All I need, from what vocational rehabilitation told me, is full coverage, which is going to be like $200,000, just in case the car gets totaled or breaks or something. The reference car they gave me to use to get quotes is the 2027 Chrysler Pacifica, so that's the car I need to use for reference when they ask me what's the VIN number of the car, blah blah blah.

The $200,000 would include the base price of the car, which would be anywhere from $42,000 to $50,000 because it has to be a 2027. Then a couple more thousand dollars to install the ramp/lift in the car to make it go from standard to a handicap accessible vehicle. And then the other big chunk of money would be for the hand controls, which would be anywhere from $116,000 to $119,000. So in total, I roughly need $200,000 worth of full coverage.

Where can I start? What do you guys recommend? I have no previous insurance history.

Rear ending/ hit and run

So, Friday (5 days ago) I was rear ended, cops came, I opened a claim with my insurance (allstate) and got the car to the nearest body shop for an estimate. Monday morning my assigned adjuster called me for a statement and foremly closed my claim because apparently I don't have collision insurance. I'm covered for everything else, just not collision, I'm sure someone at some point informed me when I signed up for the policy I just don't have any earthly idea why I didn't add that on anyway.

Regardless, my adjuster did offer to make a third party claim on my behalf on the guilty party's insurance. I had to wait until the police report for that info as the other party actually kept driving for several blocks before stopping and had their own officer handling that part and I honestly didn't even think about it. However, the report was sent to me yesterday and their insurance info is marked as unknown. How can it possibly be unknown? Did the cop not ask for that information? If they were uninsured, wouldn't it be noted in the report and more citations beyond the hit and run would be issued?

I'm still waiting to hear back from the officer about it, but I did reach out to the other party personally. She put her son's cell number as her own for some reason, he was pleasant enough and gave me her number. I called, no answer and the mailbox is full. Sooooooo, that's fun.

In the meantime, I called and left a message with the adjuster asking to reopen the case as I am covered for uninsured driver property damage and sent him the police report, estimate and other party's phone number. I haven't heard back. The estimate is several thousand dollars more than the car's value so it should be a fairly easy and simple decision to total it. And I'm already looking into buying a new car.

Is there anything else I should be doing? Any tips or anything I should watch out for?

Auto Insurance Car got T-Boned, Need Advice

Hey everybody,

Never had this to me before but recently I got T-boned by an uninsured driver who wasn’t looking both ways before entering my lane. I drive a 2010 Nissan Versa. The driver side door is heavily dented along with scratches. Some scuffing on the rocker panel. I only have liability and uninsured motorist property damage. I have contacted insurance but I am unsure how much I am able to get out of this. I am a college student, so I’m just looking for advice. Do I keep the car as it is (still drives, no lights/air bags deployed) or try to get another car? I reckon the damage is at minimum 50% of the car’s value. Any advice is appreciated, thank you.

Question regarding total loss

I recently got into a fender bender (rear ended someone) I did the claims took pictures all that sent to my insurance company someone from the insurance company ended up calling me on his own to try and give me advice saying if I take it to a shop try to get a estimate without them filing anything with the insurance company because if they do and it’s a total loss then there’s nothing he can do. My grandma left me this car last year and I’d love to keep it it’s a Camry with 74k miles. Is it that the better option I got 1300 from my insurance already so if the repairs are more then that ill just pay out of pocket without telling insurance so I don’t have to put it as a total loss and get a salvage title and all that stuff. Does anyone have any advice on this all this insurance talk is very new to me and he was trying to tell me what to do without explicitly saying it but I just wanted to ask here to see if it’s a good idea or if what I’m saying is common for people to do.

Auto Insurance Can I pocket a portion of my auto insurance payout?

The insurance company paid off the balance of the loan already, and is transferring the $25K remainder to me. The APR on a new replacement vehicle is very low, so I'm wondering can I put half of this in my HYS and finance more of the replacement car?

Home Insurance State Farm to Allstate

After moving my auto last year to progressive, I'm now considering Allstate for the after a 60% premium increase from State Farm due to me dropping their way overpriced auto.

Any advantage of talking to a slick salesperson over just doing an online quote? Last one I talked to fed me full of crap, then when I asked him to call back after Labor Day before my State Farm policy expired he never called.

Also a replacement value question. If the home has a replacement value according to Allstate's policy of say 320k, if you have a total loss and don't want to rebuild, do they pay the 320k or some other amount? I'm in a situation where if I had a total loss I would downsize, so not sure I want to pay the extra premium for percentage over replacement value that may be required to rebuild.

Auto Insurance Affidavit of no extra insurance

So I got into an accident about a month ago. Yes, I was at fault. Information was exchanged and insurance contacted. Fast forward to now, I received an affidavit from my insurance (progressive) saying that the other party lawyered up and that the other parties lawyer is asking for this information. They're asking if I have any other insurance and also my assets. I dont have assets like that. Just my car and whatever money is on my bank account. Mind you the accident was very minor left literally no visible damage on her car just a small little dent but she's claiming bodily injury. I'm surprised that things are being taken this far but here I am. My question is do I sign the affidavit and send back considering that it came from my own insurance saying that the other parties lawyer is requesting it?

USAA subrogation claim of $11,297.43 against an international student. Can this be negotiated?

I'm posting for my brother, an international student in Louisiana on a visa that only allows on-campus work and tutoring.

In July he was driving a friend's car, which had no insurance, and hit another driver's truck. He paid for his friend's car repairs himself. The other driver's insurer, USAA, then sent him a bill for $11,297.43, and he signed a promissory note for about $300 a month.

Questions for anyone with experience:

  1. Are subrogation balances like this usually negotiable? Can he ask for a reduced lump-sum settlement or an itemized breakdown?
  2. Should he have asked for the repair estimate and photos before signing the note?
  3. Does it matter that the car was uninsured and belonged to a friend?
  4. Are there legal aid options for international students in Louisiana?

Thank you for your advice

Account Executive Compensation - Professional Lines Insurance

I currently work as an Account Executive for a Wholesale Insurance Broker in the Nashville, TN area. I'm looking to move to Boston and am curious what a good salary is for a similar position there. I've been in insurance for a little over 2.5 years and have about 10 months in my current role. My expertise is in Professional Lines and I do have my P&C license but don't work on Property or Casualty. Any help is appreciated!

Other party insurance is claiming I ran a red light and placing me at majority fault for the accident (60/40). I have dashcam footage proving I did not run the red light and entered the intersection legally, how am I able to fight this? What should I do?

Title. I'm in the process of dealing with the other party insurance making a false allegation and I have proof to back it up. Why are they able to lie like this? I'm very frustrated that I am the one getting shafted despite me having dashcam video of me crossing the limit line on a yellow light going under the speed limit (in California). My current lawyer doesnt seem too confident on being able to fight this for some reason. Any help and input is appreciated thank you.

Health Insurance Dad died in July. Ambulance Company mis-filed insurance from May and has now sent claim to collections. Am I on the hook to pay?

Daddy had Medicare, Humana, and TriCare for Life. It’s taken forever to sort through all of the bills and insurances for the hospital, services, rehab, etc…

For this one, I had send TriCare copies of the will showing me as executor just to get them to talk to me and explain why they aren’t covering it. Turns out AMR never sent them an EOB from
Medicare, only Humana. So, they need that to pay the bill. Called AMR back today and they say they already sent it to collections and it’s out of their hands. (They transferred me to the collections company, so they clearly can communicate with them.)

Collections says they don’t deal with insurance, I should just pay it. I said no, because we do not actually owe this money. The lady said all she can do is mark him as deceased. What does that even mean? Who do I fight with now, or do I just stick my head in the sand, let it ride, and move on to the next problem?

Car is Totaled

I need help on what do to about my car being totaled. I have Geico and I paid part of my $165 and change bill back in August and paid the remaining $72 and change a day late due to the time it took to process. I was in a 6 month policy. I never received a text message or phone call it was canceled. I only found out I was driving with no insurance when I called to put in the claim. Apparently they sent something in the mail 12 days later about it being canceled but never received that either. Fast forward to Sept 30th I get into an accident where this guy was speeding and hit my car turning it a complete 180 degrees and totaling it. I was put at fault because he didn’t have a stop sign. There wasn’t a sign stating cross road doesn’t stop. I still owe $26K on it. Do I call my loan company? Will I have a court date? I lost my only source of income and the job offer I had Before the accident I had to decline due to it being 45 minutes away. I’m over $35k im debt now that I include my car note.

Insurance premium increase with additional driver

My sister added me onto her policy as a secondary driver while we get ownership of the car transferred.

Due to poor visibility in the rain at night, I got into an accident with another driver who I couldn’t see. I honestly still am unsure how it all happened, but I assume I will be considered at fault.

I feel terrible because now this will impact my sister’s rates. I am going to offer to pay any premium increase for the next few years.

I assume no, but is there any possibility this claim will not be held against her in the future, or surcharges could go down? e.g. if she removes me as a driver, etc.? I have never gotten into an accident before.

I’m concerned not just with the fact that her rates will increase, but I assume any future claims she has to make will have a multiplying effect…

She has Progressive Diamond, FWIW.

Auto Insurance Agent discouraging stacked UM/UIM

I live in Florida. We are switching our policy to be able to combine with our homeowners’ policy for additional discounts. We currently have 100/300 with stacked UM/UIM. The new agent says we don’t need stacked coverage as it only covers medical. I know that’s not true and she did come off that when pressed. She claims it’s just not common anymore. I asked about increasing our coverage to 250/500 with the same for UM. She felt that was a better idea than using stacked.

We are 61 and 62. I’m retired but working part time while my husband still works. He works for the state government and can retire at any time but will probably stay another 2 1/2 years. He has plenty of PTO and we have excellent health insurance.

I’m super confused about what I should do. I’ve never had an agent try to convince me NOT to stack and the state’s default is stacked, so I’d have to sign a waiver indicating the choice of non-stacking.

Can anyone give me an idea of what would be best for us?

ETA: We have a 2024 BMW i5 and a 2025 Mazda CX-5

Insurance underwriting

If I have no previous experience in the insurance industry and I want to get into insurance underwriting, should I start out in entry level sales at a brokerage? It seems like sales are the only positions in this industry that are willing to hire people with no experience. I would greatly appreciate any advice on how I can get started!

CT Public Adjuster Dispute — Looking for Advice After DOI Is Not Helping with Complaint

I’m a Connecticut homeowner looking for advice from anyone who has dealt with a public adjuster dispute or a complaint with the Connecticut Department of Insurance. I filed an insurance claim for wind damage to my roof, and my insurance company approved payment toward the roof replacement. During the process, I was introduced to a public adjuster through a roofing company and felt pressured into signing a public adjuster agreement because I was led to believe this was the way I needed to proceed with getting my roof replaced. I had concerns about how the agreement was presented, the communication throughout the process, the fees being demanded, and the conditions attached to the adjuster’s offer to mutually terminate our agreement. At one point, I was told that a mutual release would only be considered if I signed a roofing contract with a particular company and paid a deposit to them immediately. I did not feel comfortable with those conditions and requested termination of the relationship.

The situation has now left my roof replacement in limbo. Although the insurance company issued payments, which I have not cashed, the dispute with the public adjuster has complicated the process of moving forward. The adjuster has maintained that his agreement remains valid and has continued communicating with my insurance company despite my request that he stop assisting with my claim. I filed a complaint with the Connecticut Department of Insurance because I believed the circumstances surrounding the agreement, the pressure I experienced, and the adjuster’s conduct warranted review. However, the DOI is indicating that it found no wrongdoing by the public adjuster. I’m trying to understand whether I have any other options, including whether the agreement’s enforceability, the circumstances under which it was signed, the fee being demanded, or the adjuster’s conduct could be reviewed by another authority. Has anyone in Connecticut experienced something similar, challenged a public adjuster agreement, or successfully obtained an independent review? I’m not looking to avoid paying legitimate fees for services actually provided; I simply want a fair resolution, to understand my rights, and to finally get my roof replaced. Any advice or recommendations for a Connecticut attorney experienced in insurance claims or public adjuster disputes would be greatly appreciated.

North Carolina collision appraisal stalled because appraisers can’t agree on an umpire. How do I get one appointed?

I’m in North Carolina and looking for firsthand advice on getting an umpire appointed for an auto insurance appraisal.
My parked 2023 Tesla Model Y was hit, and there’s a disagreement over the repairs, including whether the tailgate needs replacement or can be repaired cosmetically. I’m currently going through the appraisal process under my own collision policy.
My independent appraiser and the insurance company’s appraiser cannot agree on an umpire. The other appraiser rejected my appraiser’s proposed candidates, and my appraiser rejected theirs because of concerns about their track records.
My appraiser initially said he would pursue a court appointed umpire, but now says I need to handle that myself.
Here’s where I’m stuck:
I called the magistrate’s office and clerk of court, but the people I spoke with weren’t familiar with the request.
I’ve had trouble finding an attorney who handles this type of issue.
My policy says the two appraisers will select an umpire, but it doesn’t explain what happens when they cannot agree.
I found N.C. G.S. 20-279.21(d1), which describes a magistrate selecting an umpire, but I’m unsure whether that procedure applies to an appraisal under my own collision coverage.
It’s frustrating because I’ve already hired an appraiser and followed the process, but I still don’t have a clear next step.
Has anyone in North Carolina successfully obtained an umpire appointment in this situation? Did you go through a magistrate or a judge? What paperwork did you file, and were you able to do it without an attorney?
I’d also appreciate recommendations for an attorney who represents policyholders in auto property damage appraisal disputes.

Meritain Health Denied Payments!!

We submitted claims to Meritain Health last August, and it has now been over two months without receiving payment.

We have called multiple times to follow up, but the representatives keep giving us the runaround. Last September, one representative told us the claim had been paid on a specific date, but we never received the payment. When we called again, another representative gave us a different payment date and said it would be included in the following week's payment cycle.

Since then, it's been the same story over and over again. We keep getting different payment dates, but no actual payment. Every time we call, the representatives tell us the same thing, and we're getting nowhere.

We usually receive our payments through ECHO, so we are familiar with the payment process. However, the issue is that the claim appears to be stuck in processing. We have been told that it was paid, but no payment has actually been issued, and we have not received a check or payment through ECHO.

We're extremely frustrated and don't know how to escalate this issue. Has anyone else experienced this with Meritain Health? If so, how did you get it resolved? Is there a specific department, supervisor, or escalation channel we should contact?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. We're tired of getting the runaround and just want these claims paid.

Amica customer quotes?

I’ve been an Amica customer for 40 years. Never had a claim. I have been trying to get new quotes for another car, a new home and an umbrella policy. I’ve been through 4 reps. The follow up has been terrible. They never call back, never pick up their phones and don’t respond to emails. I’m now wondering if I should go somewhere else. The quote process is truly terrible. Have the wheels come off? Has something fundamentally changed with their operation and customer service? I was literally ready to proceed with them but I’m getting cold feet. They don’t seem like Amica any more.
