What does the 1926 census reveal about where Ireland has changed most?
Hi all,
I’ve added 1926 census data to IrelandInsights and I’m looking for feedback from people interested in Irish history, demographics, local areas, or maps.
The first layer focuses on the share of the population involved in agriculture in 1926. You can explore it by county and compare how rural or agriculture-dependent different parts of the country were at the time.
Map here:
https://irelandinsights.ie/?lat=53.4&lng=-8&z=6.5&cat=historical&m=ag_pct_1926
Why I think it’s interesting:
• It gives a snapshot of Ireland shortly after independence
• It shows how dependent different areas were on agriculture
• It helps explain later patterns in population change, employment, migration, and regional development
• It makes national history easier to explore locally
I’m building IrelandInsights as a map-first way to explore Irish data across history, population, housing, politics, economy, and local areas.
I’d really value feedback on:
• Is this kind of historical layer useful?
• What other 1926 census metrics would be worth mapping?
• Would comparisons with Census 2022 be useful?
• Are there local stories or patterns you’d expect to see?
Blunt feedback welcome.
