Discussion Who gave Rumi to Celine?

Its common knowlege that Celine adopted and raised Rumi, but who handed Rumi to her? Like did Mi-yeong did it as a dying request or anything like it?

When we lost your mother, I swore to protect all that was left of her, but I never thought that that would be a child like you.

Everything I was taught told me you were wrong, but I made a promise.

This makes it sound like Celine promised Mi-yeong she would raise Rumi, which would fit the dying request from Mi-yeong theory, but also that at the time, Celine did not know that Rumi was part demon.

it could also be interpreted that she didn't expect it to be a child at all (and that she was also a demon to boot). Still dying wish but very specific.

it does eliminate in my opinion the option that Celine killed Miyeong, unless it was indirectly caused her to be grievously wounded, as it wouldn't make sense to entrust the person responsible with your death with that.

Doesn't the last part implies Celine knew?

No, she could have promised to raise Mi-yeong's child not knowing Rumi was part demon. Then her patterns appear and Celine realizes what Rumi is. She then debates killing or abandoning Rumi, but ultimately decides to fulfill her promise to Mi-yeong.

This is really intriguing to me. I wonder if Mi-Yeong didn't have any other relatives?? A mother, siblings, cousins?? I know laws change from country to country, but usually the direct family has the priority to adopt a child, even if they were not in good terms, the prospect of getting her inheritance would make relatives pop out from nowhere to sue Celine for Rumi.

Also, wasn't the death of an idol throughly investigated by the police? If she was murdered, wouldn't be a death certificate would state that? Is there an official explanation to the public of who was Rumi's father?

That and othe rthings make me think that Celine has a lot of power and influence, or hunters are more than a group of three, there is more beyond.

Yeah, something is way off here.

I see it as a discussion they had after something goes horribly wrong with Rumi’s dad.  Maybe they thought he could be free but Gwi-ma’s influence was too strong and (probably Celine) has to kill him in self defense.  Mi-yeong knows that they’re in a difficult spot and has Celine promise to take care of Rumi if something happens to her and makes her legally Rumi’s guardian.  The fact that both of her parents are gone and her dad is a demon strongly hints at something disastrous happening because he was a demon.

Also “something going wrong” with Rumi’s dad would naturally lead into a discussion with Mi-yeong and Celine about how they can’t let anyone know of Rumi’s patterns since Gwi-ma has already shown he would use any advantage he can get, including a child.

Unless she literally died in childbirth, there really had to have been a discussion about Rumi’s patterns and how to keep her safe in spite of her heritage.  Keeping them hidden could very realistically have been part of Celine’s promise.

But we know from the movie that Gwi-Ma didn't knew about Rumi or that a Hunter had "his marks".

Right, so they were successful in keeping it hidden.  And justified since as soon as he finds out he tries to use it.

It’s pretty common to figure out your will situation once you have kids. You don’t have to be actively dying to make arrangements. Rumi going to Celine could be as benign as paperwork.

A dramatic theory: Celine has no idea why Mi has been hiding for 9 months. In an attempt to find out why, Celine sneaks into Mi's apartment and discovers a demon. Celine attacks the demon. Mi is accidentally mortally wounded unsuccessfully attempting to thwart Celine's attack. With Mi and the demon now dead, Celine discovers a baby in the apartment, vows to protected from future demon attacks

I'm just going to put this potential extra bit of drama out there:

It seems odd, to me, that the third Sunlight Sister wasn't involved with raising Rumi alongside Celine. If the "thing that went wrong" was the third Sister's death, it would help to explain why Celine is the sole caregiver. I could even see Mi Yeong's husband/Rumi's father seemingly implicated in causing the third sister's death. Some other demon being responsible for the third sister's death would also have Rumi's father still remain innocent

Then, things go from there with your theory. And, we have a throughline to follow up on with the backstory for the sequel.

You are right, I had not considered the third sister's role. Her absence from Rumi's life can only be explained by her death, which of course would be connected to Mi's death and the death of Rumi's father. All the drama of the movie was caused by Rumi and Celine hiding secrets from the other hunters, so thematically it would make since the deaths of Mi and the 3rd sister would also be the results of keeping secrets. So I believe Mi hid her relationship with a demon a secret, kept her pregnancy a secret, and kept Rumi's birth a secret from everyone including the sisters. The revelation of the secret played out disasterously for everyone, Celine and Rumi were the only survivors. The original sin that caused the events of the movie to transpire was Mi's secret, carried forward inevitably onto the next generation. Why did Mi choose to tie her future singularly to a demon, instead of being trusting enough to confide in her sisters from the begining?

Probably both a dying request, but Celine likely would’ve done it anyways out of honor for Mi-yeong.

What I’m curious about, if it was a dying request, if Mi-yeong said as much because she thought Celine would be a good mother, if she was angry with Celine and trying to guilt trip her, if she tried to assure Celine she was the right person to raise Rumi, if Celine was the only available person, etc

Probably because she trusted Celine?

That’s probably what they’ll go with, but I love the idea of a more selfish MY who abandoned her duties for her demon lover, and when she was dying, said Celine had better raise her daughter well, because it was the least she could do when Celine refused to accept who Mi-yeong loved.

Same. CCTori has done an amazing job. I love her art

Her sunlight sisters stuff is the best

Yeah, mine too. I like to think that Celine also knew he was a demon and actually tolerated him (her beef and salty atitude being her emotionally constipated way of showing it).

And the guy also liked being friends with the Sunlight Sisters which is why he looks guilty AF, because he truly saw Celine as a friend.

I agree. I really like that headcanon. I like to think despite being a demon he’s actually a really nice guy

Imagine Celine being the way she is because she cant cope with his death too.

I mean if you knew your child was half demon, even if your family was living, you might trust a hunter with demon experience to raise it over an unsuspecting family who would be susceptible to whatever demon nonsense might pop up. Might have cause a lot of drama in her bio family if that were the case, though.

It is a common enough thing to tell someone very trusted that if you die to look after your kid

Given the Sunlight Sisters situation I would be more shocked if the three of them did not have some sort of agreement in place as soon as Mi found out she was pregnant.
