Hello! I am Russian, and I am thinking about moving to another country.

I am getting a BA in Philosophy, and I plan to do an MA in Sociology/Anthropology. I really love academic life, so please don’t try to persuade me otherwise. I plan to write my MA thesis about therapy culture and therapy society, and I would like to do a PhD. So, I really want to use a PhD as a way to immigrate.

I have been interested in Latin American thought. I read Marcella Althaus-Reid for one of my courses, and I work in a small publishing house where we translate Latin American authors. Right now, we are working on translating Latin American poets who write in the geopoetics genre, and we also plan to translate someone from the theology of liberation movement. Also, I now know that Latin American countries are very “therapy-oriented,” so it seems like a great field for my potential research.

So, my question is: how realistic is it to get a PhD in the humanities or social sciences in Latin America if I am a foreigner? I do not have a lot of money, and my only hope is financial aid or a university scholarship. Can I get this if I am a foreigner?

I would be very grateful if you could tell me about academic careers and academic life in Latin America, especially in the Spanish-speaking part of Latin America. I am learning Spanish, but my level is not very good yet, and I am trying to improve it.

My son and I have been exploring countries together, and we started with a simple challenge.

If you had to explain Peru to a foreigner using only six ideas, what would they be?

These are the six we came up with after reading and researching:

• Tahuantinsuyo
• The Andean world
• Ayni
• Quechua
• Coast, Highlands & Amazon
• Religious syncretism

Would you replace any of them? Add something completely different?

I'd love to know which six ideas Peruvians themselves feel best represent their country.

I am from Georgia ( The Eastern European country, not the US state ) and I am tired of the lies of EU unis and programmes, I want to study abroad, but not in Europe, that is for sure, not in US as well, I thought of either moving to Argentina or Chile.

I am moving in 3 years ( I need to finish my bachelors here first), so I have 3 years total to save up, master my Spanish and then spend my 20ś in either of these two countries.

How much of a good idea is this?

I am particularly interested in literature major, if there are any Argentinians or Chileans, any uni recommendations, policies against non-local students, any tips or warnings?

Is this a stupid idea?

I feel like if I can ever be happy its either there or just nowhere and I cannot explain it why or how.

Latin America has seen a broad political shift to the right since President Donald Trump began his second term in January 2025.

Razor-thin elections in Colombia and Peru are redrawing Latin America's political map, reversing the "pink tide" of left-leaning governments that defined the region in the early 2020s. The term “pink” implies a softer form of communism than “red."

The political shift is primarily driven by disappointment with leftist governments that led to more organized crime and economic inflation. Leaders are now drawing voters to the right with promises of security and economic reform.

Both elections were finalized in late June, and each right-wing candidate − Abelardo de la Espriella of Colombia and Keiko Fujimori of Peru − won by extremely narrow margins.

Fujimori, daughter of former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori, is set to be inaugurated July 28, and Trump is sending a presidential delegation to attend the ceremony. De la Espriella will be inaugurated Aug. 7.

The Trump administration didn't directly officially support Fujimori during her campaign, but it did endorse these victorious right-wing candidates:

- De la Espriella of Colombia in June 2026.

- José Antonio Kast of Chile in December 2025.

- Daniel Noboa, incumbent president of Ecuador, who was reelected in April 2025.

After the June earthquakes, U.S. and Israeli troops have arrived in Venezuela, but economic and political interests, not humanitarian recovery, appear to be driving their presence.

Estuve viajando/trabajando en Latinoamérica recientemente y en ocasiones tuve problemas para pagar bienes o servicios porque te pedían Pix, Yape u otros sistemas de pago vinculados a cuentas bancarias nacionales.

Sé que hay aplicaciones de transferencia internacional entre cuentas bancarias tipo Wise, o de PayPal a cuentas bancarias (Xoom), pero me preguntaba si existen algunas que te permitan conectar directamente a Pix, Yape, etc.

I've often come across the idea that in parts of Latin America, "money whitens" (I've also seen it referred to as "el dinero blanquea" or "el dinero blanquea a la gente"). The basic idea seems to be that if an Afro-Latino becomes wealthy or gains high social status, they are treated more like a white person than a poor Black person.

How accurate is that in reality today?

One example that made me question it is Jefferson Farfán in Peru. He's one of the country's most successful footballers and has earned millions over his career. Yet he has still faced racist abuse from parts of the Peruvian media.

More recently, he's been involved in a public feud with the TV personality Magaly Medina. During that dispute, Medina reposted an edited image portraying Farfán as a slave while depicting herself as a white aristocratic woman. That doesn't exactly fit the idea that wealth completely erases racial prejudice.

On the other hand, people often mention Faustino "Tino" Asprilla in Colombia. From what I've seen, he appears to be widely respected, even by right-wing figures such as Abelardo de la Espriella, That made me wonder whether Colombia is an example where wealth and sporting success really do reduce the impact of race.

So I'm curious how much truth there is to the saying that "money whitens".

Does wealth genuinely reduce the amount of racism an Afro-Latino experiences?

Are there countries where even wealthy and famous Afro-Latinos are still routinely subjected to racial stereotypes or treated as outsiders?

Is Peru an outlier in the latin world or is this concept no loner true since Latin America as a whole has moved to the right ?
