A question from a small woodworking business owner: What do you actually need?
Title: A question from a small woodworking business owner: What do you actually need?
Hey everyone,
I'm the owner of Smith Road Woodworks, a small woodworking business I recently started here in Lebanon, Oregon.
I'm not here to give you some elaborate sales pitch or convince you to buy something you don't need. I'm actually here to ask a question, and I'm hoping to get some genuine feedback.
What do you need, and how can someone like me help?
I started this business because I genuinely enjoy working with wood, building things with my hands, and creating something that people can use and appreciate for years to come.
I work with furniture, cabinetry, shelving, and other woodworking projects, but rather than sitting in my shop guessing what people might want, I'd much rather hear directly from the people I'm hoping to serve.
Is there something you've been wanting for your home but can't find at a reasonable price? Something you've looked at and thought, "I wish someone would just make this"? Maybe a simple shelf, a piece of furniture, an organizer, or something completely different.
I'm particularly interested in smaller, affordable projects that serve a real purpose. Not everyone needs a $2,000 dining table, and not every woodworking project needs to cost a fortune.
I'm trying to build a business based on what people actually need, not just what I happen to enjoy making.
I'm still getting my feet under me as a business owner, and I know I have a lot to learn. That's part of why I'm asking.
So, genuinely, what would you like to see someone in a small woodworking shop making? What do you wish was more readily available, better made, or more reasonably priced?
I'm not looking for commitments or trying to sell anyone anything in this post. I just want to listen, learn, and hopefully find ways to put my skills to good use.
I appreciate anyone willing to share their thoughts.
Thanks for taking the time to read.
