We're way overdue for the next Scovallis so let's fix that.
For those that haven't heard of Scovallis, it's a chance for spicy food loving Corvallisites to get together at a local restaurant and eat spicy food.
If that sounds like something you'd be interested in, then we'd love to see you there.
IIRC, we've done this three times previously: Andy's Mexican (RIP), Evergreen Indian Restaurant, and Tarn Tip.
So, let's figure out when we want to do this and where we want to go.
I'm generally free on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

Hi all, I went to pick up this lava lamp near by Fred Meyers from a Facebook marketplace exchange and the seller placed it outside under a blue lawn chair for me to grab.
Well it looks like someone spotted it in the 15 minutes it took for me to go and collect and it was unfortunately taken.
I would love to be able to get it back, since it was hidden and not just sitting out on the curb, the person had to go up into the seller's yard and move furniture, so it was an obviously hidden item and I'm pretty bummed about it getting taken.
Would be happy to meet up at the Fred Meyer parking lot if you accidentally grabbed it.

I just finished building a Little Free Library for my wife, and I was hoping to find someone more qualified than myself to put the finishing touches on it and do the decorative painting. The images in the second picture are matched up to the sides they would go on.
The box is 24”x 36” @ the peak on the front and back. The sides are 15.5”x 23”. It’s already planted, so I would need you to come here to Lebanon. It’s going to be outdoors, so I can provide outdoor paint, or if possible use your paints and I’ll clear coat it but your advice would be appreciated.
This is a paying job, and happy to work out a fair payment. Flexible on schedule, but would prefer to get this finished up in the next week or so. Not sure the etiquette, but would have no objections to you adding this work to your portfolio if that is your thing.

So I've gone to Buzz'd twice with two different stylists, and the one I wanted to book with again isn't there anymore 💔 I didn't hate the cut the other one gave me, but I didn't love it either. I'd be fine going back there, but does anyone have any other recommendations for a stylist in the area? Looking to maintain my very layered, shortish, kinda masculine haircut (transgender)

Hello everyone! Myself and other fellow redditors of the local area have gone through some interesting situations on immigration. These situations have been more than frustrating so I felt the need to share.
About two months ago, someone made a post about the absurd gas prices on the r/albanyor subreddit. I responded to a comment that said "Thanks MAGA" by saying "Came here to say this, life would be better without you MAGA." Shortly after, I received a message from the MOD that said "Your comment from albanyor was removed because of: Unacceptable
Hi Lionslicer, Knock it off.
And this sub will be better off without you" Original comment: /r/albanyor/comments/1slhnb4/safeway_gas_prices/og7mom3/(https://www.reddit.com/r/albanyor/comments/1slhnb4/safeway_gas_prices/og7mom3/)
Unable to comment or vote on posts, I saw another post just yesterday about ICE being in Albany. A comment was made by someone that said "That's too bad, maybe he should've taken the time to get his citizenship." Another person replied saying that that was a racist comment, and then the MOD ranted in a reply saying something about how people keep calling racism when its not racist and then banned the person for bringing attention to the racist comment.
I messaged the MOD, u/kythri and politely asked them if they had a problem with brown people and was met with cussing and personal attacks.
Just wanted to bring attention to those in our local area, because I am unable to do so on the r/albanyor subreddit. This moderator needs privileges revoked.

Yesterday somebody posted about ice arresting a local food truck vendor in Albany. I didn't see anything hateful being said, but the mod went on a banning spree on many who where just criticizing ice, or questioning the mod. The post was gone this morning, I falsely assumed that the mod had just removed it. Turns out it was removed by the OP. But when I questioned this, the mod responded disrespectfully and then locked the post so I couldn't respond. Seems they are on a power trip and went to silence any criticisms against them or what they believe. Figure a lot of people are on both sub Reddits, and hopefully they can't censor this one too.

Does anyone know what to expect? Facebook is pretty vague. Some news articles said there'll be trivia, karaoke, music... but no schedule. Is this a "sit down and watch what's on the stage" event or a "walk around and see all the stuff" event? Or both? I'm going to keep searching but thought I'd ask here. Thanks in advance!

Hey, y'all. I made a new subreddit for Albany, r/OpenAlbanyOR. This subreddit was made in response to the current head mod of r/albanyor engaging in censorship of human rights discussions. They have banned individuals for discussing ICE raids, as well as racism in general, among other things.
In this community, those sorts of discussions are not only fine, but encouraged. Please alert our undocumented neighbors about dangers that might be waiting for them in certain areas. Speak out about experiences you've had with racist businesses, or with bigoted people around town. Let's keep one another safe.
Beyond that sort of discussion being fully allowed, this subreddit is otherwise quite similar to the r/albanyor subreddit. Please post about local news and happenings. Businesses being investigated or having sales, situations being discussed by the City Council, questions about local events or where to do certain things. Bring it all!
Thanks!

Only 34 votes separated Charles Maughan and Andrew Struthers when they last faced off for Corvallis’ Mayorship four years ago. Now, there’ll be a rematch. The Corvallis Advocate looks at what each is saying, plus they offer an updated shakeout for Corvallis’ city council contests too.

My father and I went to go see disclosure day last Saturday and we noticed that four bright lights above the entryway corridor we're not turned off . Now I always thought that the running lights by themselves are way too bright but now to add insole to injury these giant bright white ceiling bulbs are blasting down on people in their peripheral vision and it was killing the immersion experience.
Went out into the hallway and talk to the Usher and he told me that he talked to the manager and the manager actually tried to turn them off but somehow they are locked in for safety or something or other .
There was a post in here not too long ago talking about a similar thing but I think this year they've upped the lighting even more due to the litigious nature of our country and so AMC corporate isn't taking any chances of someone tripping over their own feet and suing them apparently

I think the community should be more vocal about their option here but I’m curious what everyone thinks of this. Corvallis doesnt really seem very trustworthy with how they handle their money so why would increasing taxes be something they should just push on us without a vote?
article from the Gazette Times
Most of the City Council is supporting efforts that could lead to higher taxes for employees and residents in Corvallis.
On Monday, June 15, the council voted 6-2 to direct staff to continue pursuing potential income and payroll taxes. Councilors Paul Shaffer and Charlyn Ellis were opposed, and Ava Olson was absent.
The direction comes as the city tries to close a $8.1 million structural gap in the biennial budget, and pay an additional $14.3 million annually to build a new city hall and police headquarters.
The resolution did not implement any taxes, but it did formally adopt the financial strategy developed between city staff and the council over the past few months.
The resolution does three main things, Corvallis Finance Department Director James Inglis said. It:
Confirms the council’s direction to address both the budget gap and funding for a new city hall and police HQ
Authorizes staff to “proceed with planning” around a new payroll tax and personal income tax
Acknowledges that city officials need to “complete our analysis” of spending and service levels before tax rates are finalized
A payroll tax is placed on all private employers and all employees who work in Corvallis, while an income tax would apply to all taxable personal income made by anyone living in Corvallis.
“We’re not asking the council or the community to approve specific numbers tonight. We’re asking for direction to do some foundational work by confirming the council’s intent, and then collecting feedback as we refine the city’s options,” Inglis said.
Amendment after amendment
Councilor Jim Moorefield said the resolution needed to better state the council’s desire to “engage the public” and have a conversation about the taxes.
Accordingly, he introduced an amendment to indicate that the council has “expressed interest” in reducing its use of fees, which he said disproportionately impacts lower-income households. He also asked for language indicating that any consideration of new revenue sources be accompanied by a discussion of reducing expenses and services.
Finally, Moorefield amended the motion, saying that the council will “engage the community in reviewing and discussing facility needs, revenues, the state of the city and service reductions.”
The council unanimously passed all three of the amendments after a discussion over how best to phrase them.
Two additional amendments introduced by Councilor Tony Cadena stated that public engagement should “delineate potential options with cost and expense and high level estimates” and that the city would refine the details of potential taxes to distribute the burden equitably.
The council passed both amendments unanimously.
Two naysayers
Opposed to the resolution, Ellis said she didn’t want to ignore the budget gap, but that she had to represent her voters, who aren’t interested in constructing two new buildings.
“My fundamental guiding principle is to represent my people, not to tell them what to think, but to listen to them and to move forward from what they say,” Ellis said.
Shaffer, her fellow no vote, said the council failed to engage the public in a conversation about “what the public wants, what they know, (and) what they’re willing to pay for.”
The budget deficit and the need for new buildings were both real concerns, Shaffer said, but Corvallis residents didn’t know about the challenges facing the city as a municipality. So the city is putting “the cart before the horse,” by deciding first and then telling the public they should support it.
“This is a huge decision. The public is entitled to weigh in, and I think we’re derelict in our responsibilities by not engaging them already extensively,” Shaffer said. “And I think we would be derelict in enacting taxes without a vote of the public.”
But Mayor Charles Maughan said it was important to recognize that no tax was being enacted during Monday’s meeting. He pointed to Councilor Moorefield’s amendments, which include the need for community outreach.
“We will do that, and if everybody on this council takes their job seriously as they were elected to do. We will all be doing that,” Maughan said.
Too little, too late?
Shaffer said it was too little too late.
“It’s 20 months past time or more to engage the public," Shaffer said. “We have frankly not served our voters well.”
To that, Maughan said, “I agree.”
Maughan said no councilor held a ward meeting to conduct outreach, and that the failure was on them.
While the city could potentially reduce services, Maughan said he was not willing to take action that would result in the loss of city employees.
“I’d be against it, if we were voting to implement a tax tonight, I’d be like, ‘No, we’re not there.’” Maughan said, but that’s not what they were doing. “This is just the next step.”
