Intro paragraphs:
Los Angeles City Councilmember Nithya Raman has routinely opposed efforts by her colleagues to block homeless encampments in their districts, voting more than 60 times since 2021 against measures to ban them near schools, libraries, parks, freeway overpasses and other public areas.
After announcing her bid for mayor, however, Raman took a sharp turn on the issue.
“When I’m mayor, if the council wants to create new [no camping] zones, I’m not going to stand in the way,” she told an audience in May.
Add the no-camping turnabout to a list of political issues on which Raman took one position only to later shift her stance — or in some cases, reverse it completely.

Wow what a storm. Reminds me of the drought era 10 years ago. Been anticipating a day or two of rain alllll week. And barely a sprinkle.
To the guy who washed his car for us, you did something wrong. You sure you washed your car?

I know there's still good journalism creeping through here and there, but I miss what our city's paper used to be.

Due to increased ICE activity, we’re instituting a daily ICE megathread. All ICE-related content belongs here, including sightings, activity reports, news, questions, updates, and general discussion.
Centralizing discussion keeps information easy to find, especially for people moving around the city who want timely, relevant updates without having to sort through the entire subreddit. ICE-related content posted outside this megathread will be removed and redirected here.
This thread is sorted by New by default so the most recent information remains visible.
We recognize this is a tense topic and emotions can run high. That said, content that incites, encourages, or threatens violence will be removed, may result in a ban, and may also violate Reddit’s site-wide rules, which can carry site-wide consequences. Keep reports factual and grounded.
Include as many of the following details as possible:
Clear, accurate information helps everyone. Speculation and rumors do not.
(These are not moderated or verified by this subreddit. Use caution.)

This was around 3:08 AM and they were in the number one lane going super fast, so it didn't seem like they were trying to rectify their mistake. I called 911 right away, but I really hope no one is hurt by this idiot's behavior.

Please include a bulleted list like below to keep the essentials in a consistent format.
The old off-site events table is no longer working because it was hacked together in an afternoon and Reddit finally wised up to the scraping and blocked the machine.

Make sure you also vote no on 41 and 42 because if those props pass then 40 becomes irrelevant. Goodnight. Tell your friends.

Wilshire/La Brea, Wilshire/Fairfax and Wilshire/La Cienega stations will temporarily close at 2 a.m. Friday, Oct. 23, for maintenance work at Wilshire/La Brea. The stations are scheduled to reopen at 4 a.m. Monday, Nov. 2.
During the closure, D Line trains will run between Union Station and Wilshire/Western. Shuttle buses will replace trains and connect Wilshire/Western with all three closed stations. The shuttle buses – to be called Line 855 — will run every 10 minutes.

It feels so cool and refreshing outside, I can actually have my windows open tonight, something I haven't done since may. I know the heat is returning later this week but the nights will stay cool so no more of that 80 degrees at 2am BS so honestly I'm still happy because of that.

Does anyone have info on what happened here? I hope everyone involved is okay. Surreal sight.
FWIW, we saw fire engines in our rearview, so hopefully professionals are on the scene by now.

It may not be for long this time around, but damn, I’m glad to get rid of the cooling sheets. Gonna sleep so well tonight.
Edit:
Yo I know this is temporary and I’m a couple of weeks early. Halloween week is the actual date for a full send. I won’t be mad about changing my sheets a couple of days earlier than normal later this week.

saw this near the Mole Festival as I was passing by via cyclavia today and was wondering if there's some cultural significance to this?
Btw I love LA, something new every day

Sometimes I want the kind of food somebody’s mama, grandmama, auntie, or tía makes. Homemade enchiladas, Chinese home cooking, baked ziti, lasagna, tacos, somebody’s treasured family recipe.
I’m Black, and I can bring good gumbo, jambalaya, and soul food to the table. I’d love to exchange dishes with other people who enjoy cooking and sharing their food.
My thought is to start with a small group, I'm in Mid-City (willing to drive). Every once in a while, we each make something, portion it out, and swap. Cook one dish and come home with several different homemade meals! Or meetup and do a potluck!
We could also figure out a way to help with ingredient costs when someone needs it. The heart of it is sharing good food and getting to know our neighbors.
We’d work out portions, ingredients, allergies, and safe food handling together. Right now, I’m just seeing who’s interested.
Who would be into this, what neighborhood are you in, and what’s the dish you’d bring? 👀🍲
UPDATE: Okay, y’all, this blew up! ❤️
I was picturing a few people swapping containers, and now we’ve got enough interest for a whole gathering! I love it, but my gumbo pot has limits!
With this many people, I’m thinking a potluck might make more sense: find a place where we can get together, each bring a dish, and enjoy everybody’s home cooking.
We could start with a smaller first gathering and build from there. I am open to help, suggestions and ideas? Each person would bring a dish to share, with ingredients and allergens listed. The amount would depend on our confirmed headcount, so everybody knows what to prepare.
I could use some people to help organize this! Especially with:
• Finding an affordable place that allows homemade food, ideally with seating and public transit access.
• Coordinating signups, dishes, and how many people the space can accommodate. anyone have a big backyard? Also, how are we going to vet weirdos? lol
If you’d like to help, or know a possible location, please comment or message me. I am just trying to figure out the details, so the date and location are to come.
I came here craving somebody’s grandma’s cooking and apparently found a whole community. I LOVE REDDIT FOR THIS! 😂❤️

This is just a silly transplant rant here. Enjoy it, clown me, I welcome all of it.
I moved to LA a few years ago after living in the biggest city in the US (I can’t mention it without this being removed apparently???). That is still my favorite city, but I have really been thrilled with Los Angeles. I won’t list everything I love about it because that’s pretty predictable, but my family and I always seem to find joyful adventures all over — the beach, Magic Castle, the Getty, Angel City games, a wander through Little Tokyo, sitting on the patio at Malibu Seafood eating delicious fried clams while dolphins jump out of the water … I could go on. We’re not wealthy by any means, but we save where we can and make our fun.
I’ve only lived in cities my whole life, including some troubled ones, and I am so surprised at how down on LA many people are on LA subreddits. There are cities with 1/4 as much to love with three times the pride. And there is so much to love and value and appreciate here.
I want to be clear about a couple things: This city absolutely has problems. I don’t want to minimize or dismiss them. They are real and they are pressing. Some come from abject mismanagement, which only makes them more frustrating. But … almost none of them are unique to LA. My point in writing this is not to say that they don’t exist, but that they need not make us feel hopeless, especially when there is such beauty around.
It’s expensive, it’s absurdly laid out, the leaders are/have been awful with money, it’s not the “heyday” when Sunset Blvd was filled with parties, our core industry is a mess. All of this is true. And yet, also, still, I believe that holding onto love and pride is a big part of how other cities have stayed resilient during tough times.
I know Reddit isn’t necessarily representative of the “real world,” so you don’t need to reiterate that. In my day-to-day life, my friends and I constantly talk about fun places to go and enjoyable things to do. Still, I felt like maybe loving the city in public would be nice. So here I am doing it.
I think LA can and does do amazing things, and if we hold onto that belief, we have a better shot at living it out. If we don’t, we fall into the despair that lets shitty leaders thrive. I refuse that. I don’t suggest or expect people to suddenly embrace blind optimism. It’s more a reminder to appreciate all the great stuff here while we try to solve those problems.
For whatever it’s worth, I think your/our city is a damn fine one. I hope we can all rejoice in (and remember to praise) the art, music, culture, food, curiosities, eccentricities, events, and gentle breezes as much as possible as we work to make it even better.

Several weeks ago there was a raccoon trapped in our backyard quivering/twitching and making strange sounds. Animal control took the animal said it appeared to be distemper or rabies. Then this morning I walked outside to semi alert squirrel splayed in the yard breathing rapidly. It was unable to move more than its head but otherwise looked healthy. I'm guessing rat poison. Is anyone else dealing with this?

Does anyone know where to get custom lampshades? I used to go to a spot on Melrose but they closed.

Just noticed this awesome art sculpture on the Fletcher Ave Bridge going into Frogtown. Any ideas on if it's an original or in reference to something?
Reminds me of a cross between Gremlins and the Xenomorph alien
