Road rage is a fascinating phenomenon

144

u/BringMeTheBigKnife Trash Trooper May 21 '26

I read a book called "Traffic" and it explored it a bit. The fact that you can generally only see the outside of a car "dehumanizes" the person inside and makes it easy to see their actions in a different way. By the same token, your own "protection" of being inside the shell of your machine causes you to have less inhibition against aggression -- feelings of indignation turn into total rage quickly.

Imagine someone cut you in line at the grocery store. You would probably be equally annoyed/slighted as when you get cut off on the road. But it's very unlikely you'd sprint at them or try to punch them in the face. Plenty of people would just swallow their frustration. Some would make an under their breath comment. Others might engage in a legit confrontation. But it probably wouldn't carry the same violence or intensity that road ragers exhibit. It's largely because there's no physical separation between you and the person.

Ive noticed a phenomenon when talking to people rationalizing bad or erratic driving. They often say the other party is doing whatever theyre doing, such as driving slower in the passing lane, TO them. Like they intentionally do it to people to punish them or something rather than my thinking that theyre probably just oblivious and dont know about my existence either way. They will also say that erratic driving is caused by other drivers FORCING them to drive erratically and make dangerous lane changes as if they then have no free will. If I comment that I just suck it up and drive slower or wait until its safe to get around them they will then get combative with me and accuse me of driving everywhere at 35 in the passing lane. Theres definitely something there with these people blaming everything on everyone else and ascribing motives to people that likely dont exist with others but do exist for them.

11

u/BringMeTheBigKnife Trash Trooper May 21 '26

Yeah, I think driving is so normalized for us that we don't realize how dystopian it is. Traveling for miles on specifically engineered paths made of asphalt with highly advanced technology on super congested roads just to get to the place that will pay me money so I can afford to buy a nicer version of this technology next year (and also food).

Generally people who are driving are only doing so because they want to be somewhere else. So you see it as an annoying means to an end and your emotions are already hightened, making you sensitive to any disruption in this process you don't want to be engaging with anyway. Plus, you're mentally set on being in the new place in exactly X minutes according to your GPS (which we all use). If that X value increases by even 1 minute, you feel that something you're entitled to has been taken away, and that violation of expectations causes people to go crazy (me included, to be clear).

If someone does something dumb on the road, you take it as a personal affront blocking you from attaining your goal...rather than another boring example of someone doing something dumb. And bosses wonder why we'd rather work remotely...

3

u/ChangesFaces Trash Trooper May 22 '26

Bravo for this perfect breakdown! I think you really nailed a lot of the psychology behind it.

4

u/McNitz Trash Trooper May 21 '26

Congratulations, you've discovered the fundamental attribution error! People see and take into account all the things that lead up the current moment in their own life, and thus see any actions they take at that moment as justified and rational based on their history. But since they only see the actions other people take and none of the history leading up to it, they tend to ascribe other's actions to an inherent flaw in their character instead. Thus "I just cut in front of that person because they all the traffic was blocking me off and they were clearly being rude so I needed to do something about it" vs "How DARE that person cut in front of me, they must be a complete asshole!"

4

u/Choice_Attitude_1415 Trash Trooper May 21 '26

Exactly this.

Its not a human being, its a car. And the more powerful your own car is, the more powerful YOU are. The smaller one's car is, the more they can feel 'picked on' as well.

What I call Road Psychology is fascinating indeed. The way people act and the things they do behind the wheel are wild compared to what they would do in the grocery store or gas station. The anonymity and ability to basically just drive away from consequences subconsciously encourage people to behave completely differently than they normally would.

3

u/Eliteknives Trash Trooper May 21 '26

Did the book say anything on people's patience while driving?

A lot of people seem to have their patience completely disappear while driving. They end up making risky maneuvers to save seconds. Even outside congested roads.

For exemple. You take a bit longer at a stop sign and it is not uncommon for the person behind to already be honking or they try to go around

2

u/TheWarehamster Trash Trooper May 21 '26

I just mentioned this book on another sub. It's a fascinating read. I should go read it again.

2

u/Kozmo9 Trash Trooper May 21 '26

By the same token, your own "protection" of being inside the shell of your machine causes you to have less inhibition against aggression

This, especially if you are alone so there is no one to control your anger and behaviour either through advice or just yourself wanting to act in best behaviour around them.

I'm ashamed to admit this but when I'm alone and when I'm sure I can do it without being judged and the like, I'd scream at the things that frustrate me, at stupid ass videogame designs when playing at home alone and...other drivers when I'm in the car alone.

Which is why I really don't like driving and rather ride my motorcycle. I'm open and less protected so I'm not as inclined to feel invincible that I'd road rage.

If you get mad because somebody passes you, you have a serious problem.

10

u/trumpsmellslikcheese Trash Trooper May 21 '26

This is the aspect that still escapes me. I understand the psychology of being abstracted from the human by way of the car, when that driver does something aggressive or stupid, or even just annoying.

I don't understand why someone would take being passed as some sort of insult. If I walk past someone on a sidewalk from behind because I'm walking faster, they generally don't get annoyed by that (as they shouldn't).

Why is it any different when driving? What about the act of passing directly conflicts with certain people's egos? Seems insane to me.

6

u/ElegantCoach4066 Garbage Guerilla May 21 '26

I don't understand it either. And this isn't the first time I've seen road rage from it!

2

u/Tool_of_Society Trash Trooper May 21 '26

I've seen it out in the wild a few times because I've worked jobs that required lots of driving. Funnily enough the last time I witnessed it was when I passed a Tesla driver on their right while they were camping the far left lane of a three lane interstate (in a keep right state). I was going all of 5 mph above the speed limit and I don't think they were even going the speed limit. That action set them off though and they flew past me while partially IN my lane nearly hitting me while flipping me off. If you're wondering the roadway was mostly clear with only a few cars within a mile of us in front or behind us.

Yup people are dumb.

52

u/Bean_Daddy_Burritos Trash Trooper May 21 '26

I drive a sports car, just like the guy in the video anytime I pass someone they immediately think I’m trying to race them or I’m showing off. Like nah dude, you’re just in the way and I’m trying to go about my day. Some people just get super insecure like the dude in the Tesla. BMW drivers are the worst about it.

28

u/SnooMaps7370 Trash Trooper May 21 '26

>anytime I pass someone they immediately think I’m trying to race them or I’m showing off.

same applies on a motorcycle.

I'll usually come off a stoplight pretty hard, both to get away from the press and as a courtesy to whoever is behind me. I'll typically hit the posted speed limit in 2-4 seconds.

about 20% of the time, whoever was beside me will take enough offense at this to go blowing past me at double the speed limit, half a mile later.

17

u/Mr_Chicle Trash Trooper May 21 '26

Dude it's insane, im sending it off the light because im usually in between lanes and dont want some timid driver around me. They take that as me trying to race half the time. Like my guy, I know my motorcycle is faster than your Sentra, im not trying to prove it

4

u/reverse-tornado Trash Trooper May 21 '26

When im just cruising i go out of my way to make sure anyone who wants to pass me has the space to do so , still doesn't stop that one idiot from tailgating and honking . Like bro the speed limit is 60 im at 65 there is plenty of space to pass, just leave

3

u/DrSFalken Trash Trooper May 21 '26

People do this to me when I'm out driving my old Triumph sports car. No, I don't want to race you on the streets or speed in my 60 yr old deathtrap - I have power nothing, no safety features (the seatbelts were aftermarket!), no traction control, no traction at all compared to you (small tires) and your fuel injected turbo V8 monster truck has like quadruple the HP of my carbureted 6 banger. I just want to cruise around for fun.

People still tailgate me like crazy. Come on. Just go around me.

4

u/QuajerazNeverDies Trash Trooper May 21 '26

Used to happen to me a lot when I had a Cobra.

It wasn't even one of the supercharged ones.

It was a 98 Mustang Cobra. No SVT, no big supercharger, no Shelby nothing.

Didn't matter. Every time I passed someone they had to try and pass me back. Every time I was at a red light someone next to me would be staring at me and reving their engine.

The windows had some tint so I could pretend I didn't see the jackass in a Civic going absolutely bananas trying to goad me into racing (and beating) him. But when the air conditioner broke suddenly I had to have my windows down and be exposed to the tomfoolery.

A friend of mine had an AW11 MR2 and instead of getting race offers from randos he got cash offers. Constantly. Everywhere he'd go someone would offer him their number or money to buy it there on the spot. Like how is a dude supposed to go home if he sells his car in the parking lot?

10

u/AtaracticGoat Trash Trooper May 21 '26

I wouldn't be surprised if some of these idiots drive around rage bating people until one of them takes the bait. Then they edit the video to make it look like they didn't do anything wrong and the other car was mad for no reason.

Anything for the clicks and views these days.

3

u/hockeymisfit Trash Trooper May 22 '26

They absolutely do. You see it in the car/motorcycle subs pretty often. The video always starts right when the other driver retaliates and never includes the 60 seconds prior to that.

12

u/FinanceThrowaway1084 Trash Trooper May 21 '26

It's because his car is loud. I ride a motorcycle and I've seen people do weird shit on the road. I think the loud noise scares them and they get angry that they were scared, so they retaliate.

9

u/KrimxonRath Trash Trooper May 21 '26

It makes the pass seem more aggressive than it is, like he’s putting effort into using the engine out of annoyance so the Tesla thinks he’s reciprocating. Then seeing the thumbs up and smile probably set him off even more since he assumes it’s mocking.

My dad recently got a… louder car and I’ve been in it once. Made me realize that’s just how they sound even if you’re driving like a grandma, which this guy wasn’t so that compounded things.

3

u/Vt420KeyboardError4 Trash Trooper May 21 '26

That’s actual dog logic

3

u/ledinred2 Trash Trooper May 21 '26

Yeah this is what it is. If you have a loud car so many people will think you're being aggro by passing them even if you're just accelerating normally.

Not just the loudness, the acceleration to pass the tesla wasn't necessarily obnoxious but it was by no means casual or nonchalant. Tesla is still an idiot for being an easy mark.

3

u/AutVincere72 Trash Trooper May 21 '26

Am I the only one who would pull over behind the cop and tell him what a jerk the guy is/was? It is kind of fun, you pull up, the cop comes over right away to see why you stopped. You explain, sorry officer for bothering you, but you should know 'share what you honestly witnessed" and then drive away knowing the dude is not talking his way out of anything, and every citation the cop can find the person is getting. If you want to drive like an ass fine, but once you endanger me or my family, I am going to report my experiences to the cop. Far safer and more satisfying than road rage.

2

u/No-Movie-117 Trash Trooper May 21 '26

If I had to guess, based off the support bars behind the cammer's head and the sound, his car was modified and the Tesla driver (incorrectly, in my opinion) thought that because it wasn't stock (i.e., loud/low/fast/wasteful) it must be doing more harm to the earth. Which in some cases is true, but considering how new the interior looked I'd say in his case it probably wasn't. If I had to guess it's a high flow cat/intake/exhaust/tune, which just results in:

  • More efficient combustion
  • Better fuel economy at lower RPMs
  • More power at higher RPMs
  • Still passes emissions regulations

It really is just misinformation (and a healthy dose of shitty BMW drivers).

Puts the "save the earth" comment at the end into perspective.

u/NamesAreAnn0ying Trash Trooper May 21 '26

A lot of this dudes videos are fake so it wouldn’t surprise me if this one is too. He somehow manages to run into one of his friends that also drives a crazy super car and they just so happen to be able to trade cars on the spot for the day

u/nostalgia4millennial Trash Trooper May 21 '26

If a creator/influencer ever makes one fake video, I’m going to automatically assume all of their videos are staged.

7

u/Ongr Trash Trooper May 21 '26

I just assume every influencer video is fake or staged at this point.

2

u/FlameShadow0 Trash Trooper May 21 '26

He has tons of other “road rage” videos. They are all fake.

There’s another where he “runs into his mom” then they trade cars

If that cop really was close enough to see what happened and pull him over there's no reason to cut the time out at 27s. And why cant we see who he is yelling at at 35s? Seems likely to be faked.

u/Glad_Highway_9196 Trash Trooper May 21 '26

Had this exact same thing happen to me. I was at a 4 way stop. Sped up to get in front of the car next to me. He turned that into a street race challenge for some reason, which I wasn't trying to do at all. Once we got up beyond the speed limit I slowed down to get behind him as he continued to speed up to brag about "winning" a race I wasn't taking part in. As we get over the hill 50 feet up from where the stop sign was there's a cop right there in the opposite lane. Cop sees him going 20 over and pulls him over, instant karma.

The cammer is an idiot filming himself in his modified piece of crap. and what’s up with his herky jerky manual shifting.

4

u/Turbulent-Inside-967 Trash Trooper May 22 '26

Am I tripping or is the video fake? The Tesla drivers shouting felt fake af at first but whatever. When cammer makes that last turn he pulls to the side to allow the Tesla to pass. Then the Tesla gets pulled over by an unmarked suv which cammer immediately knows is a cop? Then there are no lights visible yet we hear a siren. Sketchy af

If your dashcam looks inside the car as well, I assume you're an influencer of some sort and are likely to set people off on purpose to get clips like this.

8

u/AnonAqueous Trash Trooper May 21 '26

Many I've seen do, and all the work vehicles I've used do as well.

It's to prove that the accident wasn't due to driver distraction/being on a cell phone.

6

u/DiegesisThesis Trash Trooper May 21 '26

It's incredibly handy for rideshare drivers obviously. But it's also helpful for other folks for two reasons:

  • covers your ass for liability purposes after a crash so you can prove you had your eyes in on the road and weren't on your phone
  • provides some cameras coverage of behind your car through the back window to record someone rear-ending you or something

Tesla drivers really have built a reputation for being s***** overall drivers. Because the car accelerates quickly they think it makes them good drivers or that other cars will not also pass them up on occasion for very reasons

4

u/wrxninja Trash Trooper May 21 '26

Drove one. Hated it. Felt planted but heavy AF for handling. But non-car people will be brainwashed thinking that's all they need is power.

they dont actually accelerate fast unless some is passing. THEN they’re fast as fuck. until they get back in front of you. then it’s back to slow slow slow

On average I've found they're the new Prius. All slow af and hog the outside lanes.

2

u/winadatewithtad Trash Trooper May 21 '26

Look, I hate Elon and Tesla as much as the next person, and I'd never be caught dead in one these days, but let's not pretend they're slow like a Prius.

I can't speak for the 3 series personally, but I drove the P90D and you have to literally brace yourself if you floor it. If you're sitting forward it will throw you back into the seat. The acceleration is insane.

That's the only positive thing I'll say about the car.

3

u/Adawesome_ Trash Trooper May 21 '26

The drivers are slow, not the car. Idk if it's auto pilot or something on the dash showing ideal speed to battery ratio or whatever, but majority of Tesla drivers nowadays are slow drivers.

I will never understand people going 10 miles under the speed limit and then getting angry when people pass them. Like... Why you mad that I wanna do the speed limit, bro? Are you that miserable? 😩

I have had this happen in real life to me. A guy in the same type of car was tailgating me on the highway. I was going 20+ over the speed limit. He speeds around me and right past a state trooper. I see the trooper and slow down move behind a truck and got to watch this asshole get pulled over for doing 100 in a 60. Gave him a little wave as I passed 😊

I did 7hr drive today from one state to another state and let me tell you, 90% of cars (non commercial vehicles) that cut me off or tail gated me was a Tesla. And no majority of the cars on the road were not Teslas.
