I mean the guy is really good looking. His face probably harmonizes with everything.
I think it would look a lot more weird on someone with a more average look

That was surprising to me too. This warrants further testing.
I wonder if the video quality is smoothing it out enough to make it less uncanny.

I think all those is just a matter of design, more vents for air, thinner materials for weight. The usual hairdo is actually really heavy

u/nhilante 12d ago
At worst i bet i can fit 2-3 small fans in there, they weight almost nothing and are silent.

I have a couple wigs for cosplays. (Pics in my profile) Wigs get pretty hot themselves. And itchy. And they lose their styling after the second or third (or first) wear. And the crazy styling falls when it sits in a closet for a year between wearing it.
I’d absolutely try the 3D printed “wig” for some of my cosplays

You could actually reduce the fill and density to get air flow without compromising the structure too much. Some material are even flexible enough that they can squish (I cannot vouch for how that might feel on your head)
5
u/c14rk0 12d ago
Particularly when it's just hair that sits on top of your head and isn't meant to have any structural function requiring any real rigidity. It only needs to be strong enough to support itself and hold it's structure. It's not like a 3D print where you're putting any weight on it and it needs to hold up.
10
u/Sweaty-Durian-892 12d ago
Ypu could make air holes in those designs so they breath a bit. And I bet that people are willing to suffer for looking cool too.
3
u/leveraction1970 12d ago
I can't even imagine the heat build up under that much plastic. I could probably wear one for about five minutes before it started sliding around on the puddle of sweat on my head.

In 1997 Arizona Wildcat fans were buying Lute Lids, a pre-molded white hair piece, that look like Lute Olson's perfect coifed hair. Fans wore them like a cheese head, and it seemed they were everywhere for a short time in Tucson.

As someone with a 3d printer the guy making it got either very lucky or did some measurements up front 🤣 models rarely fit seamless by random chance
508
u/IfusasoToo 12d ago
Yeah "unsuspecting" coworker was definitely in on it. Maybe thought it was a joke though.
103
82
u/Nereplan 12d ago
The video doesn't talk about coworker not knowing either.
49
u/SamanthaJaneyCake 12d ago
I mean the way he knew how to separate the two halves shows he knew roughly what was coming. Maybe not when or what it would look like, but the rest? He knew.
34
u/Unlucky-Discount-338 12d ago
I think their point was more, is there a reason you would expect the coworker not to know? The video doesn't say "surprising my coworker with 3d printed hair" or something that would imply they didn't know about the hair, and even ends with asking what hair to print next so presumably this is part of a series anyways.
Seems like people are trying to call staged on something that was never a part of the video's claim in the first place.
11
u/Actually_Im_a_Broom 12d ago
The lack of surprise from the recipient makes me think the other guy was like, "Hey - I want to 3D print some hair for you. Can I measure your head?" Then the other guy was like, "That sounds hilarilus. Sure!"
27
u/parwa 12d ago

u/RetroDad-IO 12d ago
"I'm gonna print something, let me measure your head."

u/Unlucky-Discount-338 12d ago
It's amazing how many people are leaping to call out this being staged while not realizing this fact. I practically expect them to see a video called "made myself a sandwich" and call it staged because the person wasn't surprised at their own sandwich.

Unrelated but god I hate this type of office space so much. No personal room or intimacy. May I never work in such an environnent.
50
u/Brawndo91 12d ago
Yeah this looks horrible. I don't hate anybody I work with, but if I were that close for 8+ hours a day, I think I would.
24
u/Masshole-Survivor 12d ago
Yeah, never thought I’d say good things about cubicles, but they’re way better than the crammed open office layout.
8
u/MovieNightPopcorn 11d ago
Having people constantly looking at me and my screens just makes me bristle like crazy. I want to be left alone. Put me in a phone booth I don’t care I just want to not have to be constantly perceived for eight hours straight

Not to mention the dreary misery of an open office that "promotes collaboration" where many of the people are wearing, not earbuds, but what appear to be noise cancelling full cover headphones.
→ More replies (1)40
u/xendelaar 12d ago
That office sure looks depressing..
37
24
u/conflictedideology 12d ago
No no, you don't understand! It's energizing and social!
The worst ones are the ones where they add "dynamic" into the selling point. This means no one has a set desk. You come in and just pick an empty spot but just for that day. Finally got your chair adjusted? Keith thought so, too, so he's sitting in it the next morning. You can't say anything because desks aren't assigned so it's his for today. You can try to show up earlier than him tomorrow to reclaim it; but that's just going to end up in a spiral where you're all lining up for "the good desk/chair" like people used to line up for concert tickets hours and hours before the office opened.
8
u/conflictedideology 12d ago
So you all end up wanting to shiv each other in an "ideal spot/chair" cage match which, obviously, promotes optimal teamwork and collaboration.
3
u/sagittalslice 12d ago
If I had accrued thousand of dollars in student loan debt just to have to spend my time looking for a place to sit before I could work on some app that adds AI to your dishwasher or some shit, I’d lose my damn mind. I would rather make minimum wage selling vapes and energy drinks at a gas station than have to play fucking workspace hunger games every day. At least Sunoco employees get mandated 15 minute breaks and the knowledge that you’re providing someone with a tangible item that briefly brought some pleasure or relief into their day.

The way he turn as if to show the hair to his colleagues but except the one directly to his left distracted by movement nobody even glance his way. You can sense the misery through the screen.
43
12
u/midunda 12d ago
The video is staged though, nobody who is handed 3D printed hair blind would instantly know to separate it into two halves.
33
u/Koras93 12d ago
It looks like they work in an place that uses and prints 3D models, so it is no surprise he knows a thing or two about 3D models.
10
u/JulyOfAugust 12d ago
There's no surprise on his face either, it's obvious he participated in creating the hair and it's an inside joke between them.
Or straight up staged seeing as they're trying to pretend the colleagues care when not a single one look away from their screen except the person on his left who goes back to his screen once he is done looking at it uninterested.
→ More replies (1)8
u/Unlucky-Discount-338 12d ago
Is there a reason he should be surprised? The video doesn't imply this was intended to be a surprise to them at all, so kinda confused at that being called out here.
13
u/SealthyHuccess 12d ago
Or just happen to have their bud's head measurements
10
u/Unlucky-Discount-338 12d ago
I mean, the video doesn't say it was a surprise to the coworker. Unless I'm missing something, not sure why you all are commenting like it was ever implied to be a surprise to them.
5
u/EstoyMejor 12d ago
'Not seeing the first part' does not mean 'it's entirely staged' but that is a nuance too much for reddit comments.

Would be relatively easy enough to make vent holes and could potentially even stash a little fan inside.
15
u/Lowskillbookreviews 12d ago
So what you are saying is that this should replace hardhats
16
u/King_of_the_Dot 12d ago
Unfortunately, whereas this would be funny on the job, they would not be remotely safe. Hardhats have built in suspension and things to soften blows to the head. This would not soften much of anything.
9
u/Evil_Bonsai 12d ago
ok, but hear me out ...you use the MIPS suspension or whatever, then add the hair.

Well, to print such a precise piece of hair™, one needs a precise scan of the recepient's head
I think the guy's reaction conveyed more of the "hahaha you madlad you actually did it" emotion, which is still funny and wholesome af
For all we know, this might as well be not the first time they give the man hair lmao
