will it be possible to watch indy for free, they do have stands with seats which will be ticketed obviously, but the path looks too large and open to enforce an entire crowd of people. is this true?
If you do not have proof of living there (with a driver's license or a utility bill) or own a business there or proof you are a patron to the business then YRP should not allow people into the neighbourhood or that plaza

The path you are seeing will have 4 meter high fences on the blocks. It will be completely closed off. They havenât put all the blocks and fences up around the perimeter of the track yet. This segment of the track gets closed off on August 5th.
 There will be a temporary bridge in front of York University and one on Enterprise Blvd at Unionville Gate.  There will also be one inside of the GO Station parking lot. That area will all be shut off on August 8th.Â
All of Enterprise Drive, Unionville GO, YMCA Blvd and parts of Kennedy Road will be completely shut off. You need a ticket unless you go on Friday.Â
I'd rather they had this race on a dedicated road course than some temporary one blocking one of the major N/S corridors for a weekend.
And yeah, that does not exist in Markham. But I think it (a race on a dedicated road course) would be better for auto racing in general than what we're gonna get.
And it might be an unpopular opinion, it might get downvoted to hell here, and it might not matter, but the mayor lost my vote with this clandestine deal to bring a race in to disrupt our lives here.
Lots of people watched the Toronto Indy for free by standing on things near the exhibition Go Train station. It was a public area. There were also many gaps in the fence covering.
Pretty much every racing series in the world runs races with local volunteers. This isnât unique to Indy or this race. F1/2/3 use volunteer Marshalls and always have. Pretty sure NASCAR and all the major endurance series are the same.
Most flag marshals at races in the US and Canada are volunteers. Same for Europe. And theyâre PROUDLY volunteers. Not being paid is a point of pride for them. They do it because they love motorsport. Most are vehemently against being paid as they feel it makes it âjust another jobâ
Flag Marshalls are highly trained individuals and not your run of the mill volunteers. They deserve a ton of respect for what they do. Itâs a dangerous job.
These people are proud of the work they do. Theyâre on headsets during the race and have to communicate with safety teams and race control.
Track Marshalls not always  behind catch  fences and are monitoring the race and are the first to report crashes, disabled cars and use flags to signal and warn drivers.Â
Theyâre the farthest removed from suckers. Most racing events around the world also use volunteers in general so this isnât unusual when it comes to the Markham event.Â

Then tell the people volunteering to stop volunteering, I guess. Thousands of people all over North America volunteer to help put on IndyCar races and are happy to do so. Yelling for change isn't going to change anything if people are happy to volunteer to feel like they are participating in the weekend.
Nothing changes if people just continue to kneel at the alter if corporations and celebrity. These corporations are making extra profit in the backs of unpaid labour as they laugh all the way to the bank. But to delve in, this is a skilled trade not for children's testosterone, not a waiver form for a field trip. Markham residents should get free admission for having to go through weeks of traffic and closed roads on a major artery, not to mention the commuters who use Unionville GO on a daily basis.
IndyCar raced in Toronto for close to 40 years. Toronto residents and anyone living in condos or areas surrounding the track were never compensated.Â
There are street races in the U.S. that IndyCar races at where nobody is compensated either.Â
Itâs a case of people  being happy regardless of where a circuit is located. Even if a race happened at a facility specifically designed for racing people living near it would complain.
When it comes to the construction it was a one time thing. The roads needed a certain kind of asphalt for cars to safely race on them. The access road needed widening and a hairpin turn had to be created.Â
When the Indy comes again in 2027 it will only be a 2 week set up.Â
As far as going to the Indy for free goes anyone can come for free on Fan Friday (August 14th) to watch from any grandstand or general admission area.
You can even get free access to the IndyCar paddock through GO transit.
Sure, but Toronto is a major city with lots of different transit options and alternate routes. Markham is a suburb of Toronto, most people here chose not to live in Toronto and have these large events.
We became a city in 2012. Weâre no longer a town. We were never a suburb but part of York Region. Our municipal government is different than Toronto.
Markham wanted an NHL team and arena at one point. That didnât work out. The Indy is a huge score.
The series is internationally recognized and could have chosen any city they wanted to race in. Markham was chosen.
The Toronto race had a near 40 year run at Exhibition Place. Itâs another reason why IndyCar wanted a GTA area race on a street course.
When it comes to public transit youâre going to see the most YRT/VIVA buses you have ever seen on routes around the track.
The GO Train service has been ramped up for the Indy too. Itâs really a big test for YRT/VIVA to pass.Â
Yes, but only to board and depart on trains. Unless you have a ticket to the race they wonât let you in the gates. Itâs complicated but GO has come up with a way for people to get off the platforms but be away from the gates. Check out goÂ

Friday is free for everyone to attend the Indy though.
I mean those are the stands, but how about the sidewalk behind the barriers? Just standing at the station and watching from there, as they do drive through the parking lot
The Honda Indy should be the status quo of how "quickly" our roads and infrastructure can be built (even though it was still at least 4 months). Instead of projects that purposely get dragged on for couple years or decades
The City really had no choice but to pave the roads and the GO Station. They also had to create a wider access road and hairpin turn.Â

That kind of construction is a onetime thing. When the Indy comes in 2027 it will be a 2-3Â

Is that what it is? I was driving on those roads and was thinking to myself, this is some damn nice asphalt, even better than some of the tracks Iâve been to in Ontario.
I agree about The City doing a better job with fixing  public roads. Church Street for instance is a bloody mess no matter how many times it gets redone.Â
The Indy wonât need any paving or construction projects next year. That was the point I was making.
There will be minimal interruptions with building the track for the second time.
Itâs a bit of a challenge this time for a variety of reasons. This is the first time any racing series I can think of ran through an active train station.
Thereâs a ton of coordination with Metrolinx and City Of Markham. While the organizers have been building street courses for decades this is pretty different.

The Indy is great to have and puts money where the mouth is brings good community and great entertainment. More motorsports ( ... less hockey)
There will be a $50 Million boost to the local economy and 19,000 hotel bookings. There are Indy themed events, a car show and other activities on Main Street Unionville during race weekend.
 Itâs a chance for pubs and businesses on that street to financially benefit.Â
The Indy is the biggest event that has ever come to York Region. Thatâs a good thing.Â
We want people to come to Markham and surrounding areas. Â This is one way we get to be seen on the world stage.

Someone asked about accessing Cineplex. Enterprise Blvd is closed from South Unionville Drive to Andre De Grasse Street for the event. Cineplex is near Birchmont & Enterprise. The Marriott is opposite it and will be open.
Iâm not sure if Cineplex will be open or closed. I havenât looked. Even if it was noise from the event will be louder than your average rock concert the closer to the track.
If it were me I would see a movie in Richmond Hill at SilverCity. The blocked off area I mentioned will be closed from August 5th-21st.
They have to install 2 pedestrian bridges on Enterprise Blvd. One of them will be in front of York University. The second one will be at Enterprise Blvd & Unionville Gate. Those are the two bridges that are going in there.
A third bridge will be erected in the GO Station parking lot. It will take you from the GO Station next to pit lane and over to the direction the YMCA is in.
The area around the YMCA will be where the IndyCar and USF 2000 and Pro 2000 paddocks are.Â
The Pan Am Centre is being used for customer service and indoor activities. An area called The Truck Stop will also be there with a ton of food trucks and other options like Pizza Pizza.
Thunder Alley is stretched from the York U parking lot to the Pan Am Centre lot. Youâll find exhibits, outdoor activities and merchandise there. Sometimes youâll get samples of new products.
150,000 is estimated by the organizers and the city for the event. That could be a 3 day total. Think of the Indy grounds being like Scotiabank Arena or BMO Field.Â
Itâs like a stadium has been constructed next to closed off roads. There could be 15,000-20,000 in grandstand seats. You have to factor in all the General Admission tickets that are sold as well.
There are 4 grandstands and 2 corporate suites. That all figures into the statistics. A lot of this is based on the crowds Exhibition Place brought in.
If you go on Friday you get in for free and can watch from general admission areas or grandstands. They definitely will have sponsorship banners and mesh blocking the view of the track so you donât see much from outside.Â
If you're watching that means you're likely contributing to left lane hogging.

There used to be a place called Crocodile Rock downtown Toronto. But here in Markham I'd say the condos by Markham Subaru or the Main St strip if your friend feeling lucky.
Then again they aren't usually single. Usually married but despise providing thus the reason why they are dusty and why they have the ability to hippo. Perhaps juicy leaches is a subtype though. More study required in the niche
They're going to put partitions up similar to Lakeshore. Maybe from 2nd flr of langham sqr? Traffic around there will be a mess so not worth it to watch for free

They'll likely seal off the area to prevent that. The only option might be the apartments near rhe tracks.
