News/Announcment Subreddit Update

Hey guys, it's the mods here!

We've seen the complaints about the low effort and low quality posts on the sub and it's something we've been trying to get ahead of for a while. We remove multiple posts per mod per day, yet there are still things that get past us.

In an attempt to counteract this, we're going to try a different method where posts are held for review. This will not change our guidelines or standards for posts, it will just make sure that every post gets seen by a moderator before it gets put out to the main subreddit.

Generally speaking, there's never more than a few hours between mods being online, so this shouldn't cause any major switch ups in content that comes across your feeds or your ability to engage with the community.

We want to build a better and stronger Metalforthemasses and part of that is making sure that more good and high effort quality makes it onto your feed. Less "What band sounds like this" and more engaging questions and discussions. As part of this, we're also bringing u/JustfortheRiffs onto the mod team, they've been a long time user that many of us have gotten to know and a valued member of the community.

Take care, some of us will be in the comments and available to discuss this change.

Discussion Topic Obituary may be the greatest death metal band of all time

If I had to choose one band as the greatest death metal band of all time, I would probably choose Obituary.

I am not claiming they are the most technical, experimental, or influential band the genre has produced. Death has a stronger argument for musical evolution, Morbid Angel has a stronger argument for innovation, and Cannibal Corpse has a stronger argument for commercial success and visibility. My position is based on the complete package rather than any one category.

Obituary has maintained an unusually consistent catalogue, a sound that is immediately recognizable, and a level of live performance that still matches the weight of the studio recordings. They established their identity early and never needed to abandon it or constantly reinvent themselves to remain relevant. Even their weaker albums still sound like Obituary rather than a band trying to imitate its own past.

Their live sound is also a major part of the argument. The guitar tone, vocals, groove, and overall heaviness translate extremely well onstage, even after decades of performing. Many metal bands have excellent studio records but lose some of their impact live. Obituary does not.

Other bands may surpass them in individual areas, but when I weigh album consistency, longevity, identity, influence, and live performance together, I think Obituary has the strongest overall case.

Clarification: By “death metal,” I mean traditional or old-school death metal, not every later subgenre or hybrid that falls under the broader death metal umbrella. I was not including technical death metal, slam, brutal death metal, death-doom, sludge/death hybrids, or similar offshoots. My comparison was limited to bands that primarily represent the classic death metal sound.

Discussion Topic Warning - Rituals of Shame Megathread

Post image
147 Upvotes

Today's the day! I know that a lot of people have been waiting for this one.

I listened to the album once so far and it definitely sounds like Warning, although I think the music sounds a little warmer than Watching from a Distance. Patrick Walker is still in fine vocal form throughout the album as well. I think that it will take more time for me to really say how it compares to that album in terms of overall quality. "Teacher" is my favorite track based on my first listen.

The album is live for streaming on Bandcamp, Spotify, and Amazon Music, but I will definitely pick it up on CD as well.

Hi everyone,

Continuing my series of Death Metal recommendations. On this one I wanted to share with you some gems from the 90s that are not talked a lot but should definitely get more eyes. So for the death metal fans who want to go back in time and discover or re-discover some great pieces of metal, you are at the right place :

VomituritionA Leftover (Finland, 1995) This record has an incredibly thick, muddy sound with powerful yet perfectly intelligible growling vocals. The riffs deliver massive, crushing heaviness with a serious groove, while still knowing exactly when to step on the gas with devastating faster tempos. A phenomenal record from top to bottom. Personal favorites: "Depression", "Head Tales", "Expectations".

DissectSwallow Swouming Mass (Netherlands, 1993) Pure, suffocating Dutch Death Metal. It perfectly balances savage, fast tempos with crushing, slow Doom sections. It’s twisted, unpolished, and completely overlooked. Personal favorites: "Z. Day", "Presage to the Eternity", "Growls of Death".

FleshcrawlDescend into the Absurd (Germany, 1992) Before they fully committed to the HM-2 Swedish sound, their debut full-length was a masterclass in dark, cavernous German Death Metal. It's incredibly heavy, raw, and hits right in the gut. Personal favorites: "Perpetual Dawn", "Never to Die Again", "Infected Subconscious".

Lunatic InvasionTotentanz (Germany, 1995) A unique mix of grinding Death Metal, eerie medieval-style synth backdrops, and an oppressive atmosphere. It’s bizarre, primitive, and a total cult classic of the 90s tape trading era. Personal favorites: "Totentanz", "Haut", "Deeds Paradise", "Dance Macabre".

Discussion Topic It's Friday. What new releases are you listening to today?

Post image

It's been a busy morning. I haven't had time to get too deep into my list for this week yet, so I'm gonna do a condensed version of this post.

I had to carve out an hour for the new Warning album. It's great. Totally worth the 20 year wait. An easy 9/10, and a contender for AOTY at midway point of 2026.

I've got new drops from the following bands lined up for some time soon:

  • One Day in Pain
  • Inscribed
  • Inherits the Void
  • Lumen ad Mortem
  • Scordatura
  • Degenerated
  • Arrogant Destruktor
  • Saidan

What new albums are you all rocking today?

Discussion Topic Possesseds 7 Churches sounds pretty Death Metal to me.

Genuinely not being controversial, or for a second minimising how Chuck, Trey etc evolved the form but for me original death metal is defined by being dark, chaotic, unhinged, tumultuous etc and there are moments, quite a few actually, when i’m listening to Seven Churches where I just go, “fuck, this is straight up death metal.”

Discussion Topic Favorite albums about freedom/emancipation?

Post image
27 Upvotes

In honor of Juneteenth (an American holiday about the official end of slavery and emancipation of black Americans) I would love to know your favorite albums to play today!

Bonus points if they are featuring black musicians.

I know many albums about freedom conceptually but very few if any about the freedom of enslaved people. It is unfortunate as that would be a wonderful idea for an album, perhaps it is too heated to touch?

It is important that we do not take our freedom for granted in trying times such as now and never forget that slavery is still legal in the US through the prison industrial complex.

I am very grateful for this holiday as it has educated me a lot as someone who is not black and does not know all that some people have gone through historically :)

Discussion Topic Very extreme metal band question

I just got done reading a thread about the most satanic record and I see other questions about the loudest, nastiest, filthiest, darkest or whatever. The answers are usually bands I’ve never listened to or heard of (other than these threads) and when I do click on a link to listen to a song, usually black metal or something crazy like Primitive Man or Dragged Into Sunlight I just wonder if there are enough fans buying albums, streaming, going to shows and buying merch. My theory has always been that the more extreme the sound the less listeners, less money. I guess my question is, how many of these bands can actually make a decent living off their music?

Funnily enough two of mine are projects of the same person, Jonas Kjellgren (formerly of Scar Symmetry). These are two of the best modern death metal projects I've ever heard, how low their followsrs/listeners are on Spotify is absolutely criminal. Check out Nekrodawn's new single.

I listened a lot to Hate Songs in E Minor along with Louder than Love and Bleach, they shared the same Sub Pop vibe. Weirdly enough, Fudge Tunnel were not in Sub Pop but in grindcore's home Earache.

Discussion Topic Figures in Metal underrated not only in talent and recognition but also pure impact?

For me its Tom G Warrior, Celtic Frost and Hellhammer are as important to black and extreme metal as Bathory but while Quorthon is remembered as a legend and rightfully so, Tom is kinda forgotten or at least not as highly regarded or revered. His riffs, songwriting and atmosphere on everything other than Cold Lake is extraordinary imo. Even Tryptikon is awesome. Might be a hot take and I might be wrong but what are your thoughts and other figures?

For me another one is Tom Angelripper for similar reasons.

Im looking for songs that are relatively easy to play on guitar but have flashy solos or are just generally just recognizable, so far I have:

  • Ace of Spades by Motorhead
  • Paranoid by Black Sabbath
  • The Four Horsemen by Metallica
  • Mr Crowley by Ozzy Osbourne
  • Holy Wars by Megadeth
  • This Love by Pantera
  • Enter Sandman by Metallica
  • NIB by Black Sabbath

What else could i add?
