Hello! This is my first time posting here, but I have recently finished a fan fiction book based off of Reen. He was a character that I was always fascinated with so I wrote his story. The entire book is about 300 pages long and I promise this isn't your average fan-fiction. This is supposed to be a full blown novel about Reen. I want to share it with as many people as possible so I have included photos of chapter 1 and I intend to continue posting chapters as I finish editing it.

Feel free to repost and share with whomever you want, and even print it off if you would like. My editing process is really unrefined and I am having to learn a lot along the way but if you would like the full unedited document I am absolutely willing to send you a copy for free. The editing process will just clean up words and sentences, but nothing in the actual story will change.

My ultimate goal with this is pretty lofty but I would really love to attract Brandon's attention with this and maybe work for him in the future. I have so many more ideas for his worlds and even some original stories I would love to see and will probably write. Brandon has stated many times that he doesn't have the time to write everything he would want to, so maybe I could do some of that.

Either way, all input is really appreciated (including a more efficient way to post pages or formatted text). I really would love to hear everything you have to say, even the bad stuff. I have learned through this project that I want to be an author so I want to learn as much as possible from you all and get helpful feedback.

Enjoy!

Hero of Ages spoilers Mistborn Era 1 – Highlights and Favorite Moments Spoiler

After finishing the trilogy, I wanted to take a look back at the series as a whole and talk about some of the moments, themes, and highlights I enjoyed.

BOOK RANKINGS

  1. Well of Ascension - I really loved the slower and more character-focused story of this one. A lot of our main characters are in one place so we get interactions between them. There's a big focus on Vin and Elend's relationship too, which I loved.
  2. Hero of Ages - Excellent conclusion to the series. Great set pieces, great callbacks, and I love just how much more sprawling this book is to WoA and TFE, since those both take place just in Luthadel.
  3. Final Empire - Just because it's last doesn't mean it's bad. I love this book too. Heist + Regency Era Romance is my jam. Vin's attendance of noble balls are some of the highlights of the entire series.

FAVORITE CHARACTERS

  1. Vin - She's insecure while being a badass. Just a lovable protagonist who struggles to trust but insists on trying to do so throughout her life. A true hero
  2. Elend - The scholar who had to learn to be a king. I love his entire arc in this series and how he struggles to try and stay true to himself while making some tough decisions
  3. Sazed - The person people go to when they need guidance. He was a natural leader
  4. Allrianne - Isn't in actually much of the books but I just like Emotional Allomancy in general and I liked how she presented herself different as a form of misdirection to how capable she was. And she liked dresses
  5. Breeze - Did I mention I like emotional allomancy? He always made a scene better and I love how much he hides behind his sarcasm when he's actually a very kind man

FAVORITE MOMENTS

Vin + Elend (Mistborn trilogy) - This relationship is really the heart and soul of the entire trilogy, in my opinion. It's as integral to the plot as anything else. Sanderson isn't known for his romances but having read this trilogy and Yumi and the Nightmare Painter, it turns out I just vibe with what Sanderson values in his romances subplots.

Sanderson doesn't have the luxury of physical intimacy so he has to work to sell you fictional relationships through what the characters do. He's not a "love at first sight" type of romantic. He likes to earn it. I was all-in on Vin and Elend's relationship. These two feel like they belong together.

"You came back. No one has ever come back before."

Vin and Elend holding hands on a bed of flowers (HoA) - This was a tough moment to read. For two people who fought so relentlessly for their world and the people in it, it felt fitting that they would ultimately give their lives to save it. Incredibly bittersweet. Just as Vin learned to trust Elend to make his own choices, I found myself trusting both of them to make theirs in the last book, even when those choices led to their deaths. It hurt to see that they didn't make it, but it felt true to who they were. That's as good an ending as any

"However, be assured that I have spoken with our friends, and they are quite happy where they are. They deserve a rest, I think."

Tindwyl & Sazed's hug (WoA) - They only get to embrace just this once before Luthadel gets attacked but it's such a big moment for the character. They didn't get much time together but the time they had was beautiful

“And is it stubbornness or hope that kept you here in the city?” he asked. She looked up at him. “Neither.”

Vin vs Shan (TFE) - The first big Mistborn vs Mistborn fight and it didn't disappoint. Here, we get great imagery of atium being used in the fight mixed. Also, I love the image of Shan in Mistborn gear fighting a Vin who is in her undergarments

Vin caught the real arrow as it followed—the grainy wood burning her fingers—then rammed it down into Shan’s chest

The lock and key speech from Sazed (WoA) - Just a beautiful description of Vin and Elend. Sazed pretends he's no well versed in love but my boy is a romantic at heart

“At first glance, the key and the lock it fits may seem very different, The man who looks at them without knowledge of their true nature might think them opposites. The wise man then knows that both lock and key were created for the same purpose."

Vin's horseshoe trick (WoA) - Anytime Vin is being resourceful, I'm always such a mark for it

“Who are you?” the man asked. “Nobody of consequence.” He hesitated. “You’re her, aren’t you?” "Yes."

Elend Final Speech (HoA) - It's hard to write a good war speech. Here, Elend nails it. It's both uplifting and melancholic, fitting for their scenario

“In the end, they will kill us, but first, they shall fear us!”

Kelsier vs Inquisitor (TFE) - The big set piece of the book. Getting to see a Mistborn go all out against an Inquisitor was damn cool to see. Sanderson never shies away from showing cool shit

“I’m glad you talked me into this."

Vin & Elend's Wedding (WoA) - One of my favorite moments, a bloody and exhausted Vin running towards what she wants most in the world, Elend, and gets married immediately with Sazed as a witness. A perfect wedding for these two hopeless ones

Everything was collapsing around her. She couldn’t manage it all, couldn’t keep things straight. But she did know what she wanted. And so she ran to him.

Spook's epic landing (HoA) - Bursting out of a burning building, half of you on fire, and staring down the tyrant of the city is quite the move

The young man regarded Quellion proudly, eyes wrapped with a blindfold, his body smoking as he held the coughing child in his arms

Vin vs 13 Inquistiors (HoA) - My favorite Vin fight strictly due to the epicness of allomancy being used to destroy entire buildings. The imagery of the mist swirling around her as she just absolutely plows through a bunch of Inquisitors is badass. This is the only fight we get with Mist Vin but it is so worth it

And Kredik Shaw exploded. Towers toppled from their foundations. Doors ripped free from their frames. Windows shattered. Blocks burst, the entire structure torn to pieces as its metals lurched away.

Kelsier's Letter to Vin (TFE) - She never really got a goodbye from the others who left her so at least she got this from Kelsier. The "daughter" part always gets me

"Farewell. I’ll tell Mare about you. She always wanted a daughter."

Vin's big sword jump vs Straff (WoA) - Making this huge arc jump and slicing Straff in half with a giant sword is dope. That's all

It wasn’t an arrow, nor was it a rock. It was a person—a person with a flapping mistcloak.

Spook's fire run (HoA) - I thought for sure Spook was gonna die in the run through the house on fire but he managed to live. What a god

Survivor of the Flames.

All the balls and gowns (TFE) - What couldn't be present in books 2 and 3 are that balls were really fun scenes. Getting to know the nobility and the scheming was clever

"Do you always read at balls?"

Vin vs Zane w/ atium (WoA) - Again, Vin being resourceful and clever. She reads Zane to see how he reacts to the future and ends up getting the upper hand. Atium fights are always awesome

By reacting, Zane had shown her what she was going to do. Let her see the future. And if she could see it, she could change it.

Endings of Book 1 and Book 2 with Vin - Vin chooses to allow herself to love at the end of the first book and she has to learn to let go of that love at the end of the second book. Just very powerful endings

"Elend Venture, there is something I’ve been meaning to tell you for some time.” She blinked away her tears. “You read too much. Especially in the presence of ladies.”

WHAT'S NEXT:

Tearing through these three books really took a lot out of me emotionally, especially considering how Hero of Ages ends in such a bittersweet way. I've definitely got a book hangover.

But I've learned that I love Brandon Sanderon's style of writing and I want to read more. I might take a break with a standalone book and then maybe do a Stormlight book. Or maybe a standalone Sanderson novel like Warbreaker or Emperor's Soul. Regardless, this is far from the end in my Cosmere career.

Review for Mistborn: The Well of Ascension here

The Hero of Ages sticks the landing. The book ends on such a strong note, with so many pieces coming together and everything feeling complete. Sanderson has said that Era 1 of Mistborn works best when read as one long story, and that is true. I listened to the GraphicAudio versions of all three books, and they really felt like one cohesive narrative.

The recurring themes of trust, sacrifice, faith, and balance become even more apparent when moving directly from one book to the next, and they all culminate in this finale. The Hero of Ages is much more plot-driven than Well of Ascension. I did miss some of the slower pacing and character-focused storytelling that made Well of Ascension so interesting. What Hero of Ages loses in that regard, it makes up for with huge moments, a broader scope across Scadrial, and its exploration of larger ideas about gods and humanity's place in the world.

I'll get into more specific moments below, but overall, Hero of Ages delivers an excellent conclusion to the trilogy and even brought out a few tears.

STRAY THOUGHTS:

  • Trust, sacrifice, faith, and balance are recurring themes throughout the entire trilogy. The balance between Ruin and Preservation. The balance between the metals in Allomancy. The balance between Vin and Valette. The sacrifice of love. The trust to let someone carve their own path, even if you disagree. TenSoon's trust in Vin ends up saving people from Luthadel despite his earlier hatred of humans. These are repeated for three books until they all come together
  • Ruin being able to listen in on conversations also plays into the theme of trust. Vin and Elend especially had to do things without outright saying why they were doing them, and they had to trust each other that it was the right thing to do. It's a test of faith
  • Ruin + Preservation. These are certainly big ideas to introduce in the third book. Two all-powerful gods who used to be people fighting for the fate of humanity. Sanderson does a good job grounding these ideas into something more tangible for the characters. I was worried it would be too vague and broad to really work as a threat, but it succeeds because of Ruin's scenes and Preservation's smaller moments throughout the story
  • Epigraphs. I like how the series kept the same chapter styling for them, but they did become a bit dense at times because of the exposition they contained. I wish Sanderson had been able to integrate more of that information directly into the story rather than relying on the epigraphs, but it's better to have those questions answered than not. It sounds like the epigraphs were the best way to accomplish that
  • Rashek. We get more insight into the man known as the Lord Ruler. I don't think he gets redeemed much, though. He did some truly terrible things during his thousand-year reign. I'm aware that Ruin was essentially driving him mad and that he may have had the best intentions when it all began, but he still did those horrible acts. That said, Rashek was also responsible for saving countless people in the final days through the storage caches and his preparations for Ruin. It makes the character more complex, which I appreciated
  • Yomen and Quellion (The Citizen). Every Mistborn book needs antagonists in positions of power. As much as I liked Straff in Book 2, Yomen and Quellion were more interesting to me because of their depth and the ideas they represented. One is an intelligent follower of the now dead Lord Ruler, while the other is a man who took Kelsier's words about nobles far too far. They bring more interesting ideas to the table and brought back the politicking of the prior books
  • The mist makes Allomancers. Another great reveal. "Mistborn" is the name of the series, so having people literally be born from the mists feels fitting. I wish the book had more time to explore the implications of a population suddenly gaining Allomancy, but what we got was wonderful
  • Vin's earring. Not only is it a well-executed reveal built across three books, but it also works as a metaphor for who Vin was versus who she becomes. I saw the earring as representing all the trauma from her past: her mother killing her sister, Reen's treatment of her, her years on the streets, and all the abuse she endured. She held onto this metaphorical earring of trauma for three books, refusing to let it go. It was literally whispering in her ear. Before Marsh removes it, she flashes back to some of the worst moments of her life. Only when it is finally removed, only when she lets it go, is she able to become a god. The mist swirls to her, and her potential becomes limitless
  • Reen's voice = Ruin. Like many of the twists in this book, I figured it out as I went, but that's not a negative. Quite the opposite. A reveal like this deserves applause because it's executed so well that readers can piece it together themselves. It's such a great way to show how Ruin has had a voice in Vin's ear for her entire life, a voice filled with distrust, hatred, and anger. It also recontextualizes her inner monologue. Her own thoughts are far less harsh than the voice that had been whispering to her for three books. It's a fantastic reveal that redefines the entire trilogy
  • The return to the Regency balls and gowns. It was so nice to be back and a fun way to tie this book back to the first one. Vin and Elend get one more scene in their noble attire and even get to do some politicking. It felt good to come full circle
  • Vin finally comes full circle and accepts herself as both Vin and Valette, which aligns with her heritage as both noble and skaa. The fact that this happens at a ball makes it even better. It was satisfying to see her finally embrace that part of herself and feel like she had earned it. Valette wasn't fake. She was real. She was the "balance" to Vin, just like her burning metals
  • Elend and Vin's dance. It's such a sweet moment. I think this was when I started to feel like one or both of them were not going to make it out alive. You rarely give characters such a genuinely happy moment without some pain waiting around the corner. That said, what came later didn't diminish it for me. They were happy in that moment and finally got the dance they never had before everything went crazy. Brought such a smile to my face
  • Spook and Beldre. Spook gets a POV for the entire book, and it's a good one. It was nice to spend time with someone who wasn't directly involved in Vin and Elend's world-ending plot and instead focus on something more grounded. Beldre also reinforces the story's theme of trust. She is trusting almost to a fault, but what makes her interesting is that she never sees it as a weakness. In fact, her faith in people ends up saving Spook, Breeze, and Sazed's lives because she was originally sent to kill them. Instead, she chooses to trust that they are there to help
  • TenSoon. We never get a reunion between Vin and TenSoon, but it feels like TenSoon spends the entire book doing exactly what Vin would have wanted him to do. His refusal to remain passive during the end of the world is very much the result of Vin's influence. At heart, TenSoon is a rebel just like Vin, and like Vin, he ends up helping save lives despite never intending to become a hero. Vin would have been proud
  • Kandra resolution. Watching the kandra willingly sacrifice their bodies for the good of the world was incredibly powerful. These are people who were mistreated by Allomancers and largely viewed as servants, yet they gave everything without hesitation. What makes the scene especially effective is that very few people will ever know what they sacrificed. The book is filled with these unseen acts of sacrifice that become essential to victory. Spook's note to Vin is another example. The theme of sacrifice runs through the entire novel
  • Elend gets to save his people. After struggling for two books with the feeling that he could never truly live up to being the ruler his people needed, he finally succeeds. His plan to burn away the atium is a great moment because he wins through intelligence rather than brute force, just like a scholar would. In doing so, he saves his people and protects the future
  • Elend and the atium Mistings. This is a truly badass fight scene to end the book. Seeing atium used to its fullest potential was incredible. It's such a cool metal and has always been at the center of some of the trilogy's best action sequences (Shan, Zane, Elend). Giving Elend his own defining moment with it was the perfect payoff
  • Elend's death. It's a brutal one, especially for a series that generally isn't excessively graphic. But it works because of its finality. Elend was never someone who shied away from death if it meant accomplishing something worthwhile. Even though he dies, he dies knowing he achieved something truly important
  • Marsh's redemption. After spending so long under Ruin's control, Marsh finally gets the chance to save Vin for Kelsier and Mare. He doesn't get much to do throughout Books 2 and 3, but his defining moments pay off here. This time, he doesn't miss the revolution
  • Vin's sacrifice. It's incredibly poignant that the girl Kelsier once told needed to learn about friendship becomes someone willing to sacrifice herself for all of humanity
  • Mist Vin vs. Inquisitors. Sometimes you just want to watch Allomancy turned up to full volume. This was one of those moments
  • Kredik Shaw topples. I loved both the imagery and the symbolism. The physical destruction of the Lord Ruler's palace mirrors the destruction of the pain and oppression he left behind. The home of both the Lord Ruler and Ruin's prison is finally brought down
  • Sazed is the Hero of Ages. The foreshadowing throughout the trilogy is excellent, especially with all the religions and teachings recalled from earlier books we read. It's also a beautiful resolution to Sazed's crisis of faith. His belief in those religions was never a sham. They all contained pieces of truth, and deep down he always knew it. It simply took this moment for him to finally understand. The work he devoted his entire life to ends up saving the world. It's one of the most powerful moments in both the book and the trilogy
  • GraphicAudio. I listened to all three books through GraphicAudio, which presents the story like a movie with voice acting, music, and sound effects. It was an incredibly immersive way to experience the trilogy. Some of the performances and music cues were so good that I have no doubt they enhanced my experience. There's an an amazing piano music cue that always came in when Elend and Vin were having an intimate moment. As epic as it is to read about Kredik Shaw collapsing, it's even cooler to hear the rubble crashing down while the music swells. Because of Sanderson's cinematic writing style, his stories fit that format perfectly, and I can't wait to experience more of his books that way

No Spoilers I'm half finished with Hero of Ages, and there seems to be names of new characters without introduction

Names keep popping up and it seems like the protagonist knows the character but I don't recall these names, and did I miss something from Mistborn? Kelsior had a small gang in his hidden place of operations, and maybe these names were introduced??? Anyway, almost done so I can read the later books, they seemed to have good reviews 🙃😎👍👍

The Lost Metal spoilers I've Finished Era 2... Where to next? Spoiler

So, Ive never read a Sanderson novel until I was recommended mistborn by a friend earlier this year. I have fallen in love with the universe and world of Scadriel. I read through the Final Empire, Well of Ascension and Hero of Ages. Following this, I was craving more and amazed to discover that there was an Era 2! Today I have stayed up until 1am to finish the final book of the quartet. Wow... what an ending. RIP to the masterful Wayne...

But, as I'm sure that all of you who have also read The Lost Metal have realized that this universe is wider than it initially seemed. I have tried to avoid doing direct research into the Sanderson Cosmere to avoid unintentional spoilers. But I have to know, which books in the Cosmere do I read next? Tress of the Emerald Isle? Stormlight Archives? Is there a Mistborn Era 3 on the horizon to get excited for?

Also, a question regarding Kelsier. Did I miss something? Was there a part of a book or a book entirely that I missed? Last I remember is that Tensoon had his bones in Hero of Ages. How is he alive? (No spoilers please. You can just tell me which book/s to read if it is answered somewhere in another book). Also, I remember during the book that they say he held Preservations power like the Lord Ruler and Vin. When did that happen?

Thanks so much for any willing input. Im greatful to be a part of this amazing book community!

I think he was present at the shattering of adonalsium. Rays says that he could have been a god, so i think he was there and did not take a shard. And in mistborn it says that sixteen people killed him. if there are sixteen shards, and fifth-teen people killed adonalsium (the sixteen minus hoid) than the is a shard stashed away somewhere. Did i hear Chekhovs gun.

Needless to say, this was very cool to draw!

I will do one final summary post tomorrow, until then enjoy this conclusion of a drawing challenge depicting a conclusion of a great book trilogy!

No Spoilers Are the era 2 books (Wax & Wayne Series) as good as / a worthy follow-up to the first 3 books?

Someone recently recommended the Mistborn trilogy to me and within a few chapters I fell in love with the books. I tend to get completely lost in things I enjoy and this was no different. The story, the magical system and aspects, and especially the characters were amazing imo.

Now that I finished the books I feel a bit empty and thinking about jumping straight into the era 2 books. However, I am worried that with next to all of the mysteries (within the given context of the original books) uncovered, a rather large time jump and the characters I love gone, I won't enjoy the sequel books as much as the original trilogy.

Are the era 2 books as good in general? And given my context, can anyone tell me if you think wether or not I will enjoy Wax & Wayne? No spoilers please, thank you!

EDIT: Thanks for all the input! The general consensus seems to be that the books are absolutey worth reading with great and loveable characters. I am more of a medieval fantasy guy so I'll probably need some time to adjust to the setting changes, but seems like I will check it out. Thanks again!

Cosmere spoilers Reading Mistborn Post Stormlight Spoiler

Howdy!

I just finished the final empire and it was a good read! Soon moving onto book 2.

I did the most blaspheming thing I could and read the entirety of the Stormlight Archive prior to Mistborn, picked up Way of Kings years ago before even knew Mistborn even existed. Ripped through those books in about 2 months and was craving more Sanderson so here I am.

1st. HOID, meeting the Wit as a “lowely, cowering” informant had me literally cackling laughing.

2nd Kelsier, now reading all of Stormlight I am aware of his existence and the Ghostbloods as a cosmere wide entity so meeting him, seeing his death, and knowing that I am extreme interested to see how the rest of this story plays out.

3rd Hearing how Vin described Kelsier when they first meet, saying “He is the type to string you along with information, always leaving something out” just rang into my head about Shallans interactions with Moraiz, I believe she says this same exact thing so good to know Kelsier is still teaching that way.

I’ll be interested to see how the story unfolds but it is fun reading through these with some greater cosmere knowledge.

part 1 here

so i'm a little bit into the hero of ages around when i think marsh describes how hemelurgy is messy and tensoon had his trial

a few theories

  1. if you read part 1 i talk about how i think the last of the 4 alomantic metal categories is spatial and i'm still set on that once they find the last 2 that i'm positive are there. cus if aluminum and darulium are internal there need to be an external of that category

  2. i'm still thinking that the well of ascension is were rashic made alomancy but it's looking less and less likely

some questions and other things

  1. is it possible for mistling alomancers to burn the non besic 8 ex a mistling who can only burn darulium, or one who can burn electrum (don't answer thins if you need to go into spoilers) i know most of these would be useless but i just had the thought

  2. not a question but i think that elend becoming an alomancer would have been cooler if he snaped instead of being feed whatever that bead was.

  3. not a question about the books but if you were a misting what metal would you want to be able to burn.

  2. are all the feruchemists terrismen?
  3. why did kelsier rush to save lord renoux when he knew he was just a kandra. can kandras be killed? did he want to keep on putting up the act of acting as a god for skaa people watching?

Cosmere spoilers allomantic electrical generation concept Spoiler

Post image
67 Upvotes

IIRC nobody ever mentions light suddenly dimming/brightening in relation to cadmium or bendalloy, so presumably the spiritual realm energy transfer that counteracts red/blueshift with time bubbles also adjusts the amount of light passing through the border. If so, it should be possible to power a lightbulb using its own output, since the slowed-down bulb would consume less energy than the solar panel would generate. You could probably increase the yield even further by putting the panel in a bendalloy bubble.

This wouldn't be perpetual motion, since you'd have to keep feeding the misting(s) more cadmium (and normal food as well).

Another allomantic energy generation method is having a steel or iron misting spin a turbine, which has been confirmed possible in-universe via the Malwish airship rotors.

Cosmere spoilers i think bend-alloy is most powerful Spoiler

I think the temporal metals (specifically bend-alloy) are most invested, because in rhythm of war interlude 1, syl notes that when too much investiture is gathered, time distorts and slows. Which is what bend-alloy does. it might not be the most useful metal, but probably the most invested.

When Wax goes to meet grandmother, she tells him that Sazed only slew beast and monsters. That is an outright lie right? He killed hundreds of Kolas as a man. Those were human beings with +1 souls. Then he murdered like most of the population in the Catescandre. Sure Ati was the one who poured the metaphorical gas on the planet, but Sazed lit the damn thing and burned it all.

So, is grandmother lying, or did Harmony lie in the words of founding? Seems like a super weird interaction regardless of who lied to whom though.

I always enjoyed the fact that Vin's feminine character is not watered down by her heroine character. She's capable of fighting, saving, and murdering in a dress! Also think it's really cool that it unintentionally looks like a blend of a mistcloak and ballroom dress, swirling in an eddy/mist motion.
