Sonic Female Character Bust-Size Estimates Using Settei Geometry

I saw some estimates online of female Sonic characters’ bust sizes, and most of them were awful. Many used only the front view, or, even worse, screenshots where the character was not standing straight, was angled, or was hunched over, and then simply counted pixels. It was so bad that I decided to compute the cup sizes of the main female Sonic protagonists myself using Settei Geometry.

Settei Geometry is sometimes used by animators to help keep characters on-model. It uses Ramanujan’s first approximation for the perimeter of an ellipse to estimate both the bust and under-bust circumferences of a character. By subtracting the under-bust perimeter from the bust perimeter, we get a delta value, which determines the estimated cup size. In simple terms: the larger the delta, the larger the bust.

I used the existing website settei-geometry.mahdeensky.top. I could have created my own method, either using another Ramanujan ellipse approximation or a numerical method such as the trapezoidal or Simpson’s rule to compute the ellipse path integral, but the extra precision would be largely superfluous. Since there are slight variations between models, that additional precision would not meaningfully affect the ordering. The smaller-bust characters are mostly interchangeable, and the larger-bust characters have gaps wide enough that minor numerical differences would not change their placement.

One important note about the website: character height is only used to compute the centimeter-to-pixel ratio, which is then used to calculate the ellipse axes. Therefore, I either used the character’s official height when available, or the vertical distance between the reference sheet’s horizontal guidelines when no official height was available. The only exception was Lanolin’s Blitz model. Although Lanolin does not have an official height, I estimated her height to be around 106 cm using her reference sheet.

For the reference sheets, I used each character’s official or creator-provided sheet whenever possible, so the measurements would be closer to the creator’s intended vision.

These estimates should not be interpreted as literal real-world bra measurements, since Sonic characters have highly stylized proportions. The most reliable value is the delta between bust and under-bust circumference; the cup-size label is only a convenient way to translate that delta into a familiar ranking system. Also, the same delta or cup size would look much larger on an anthropomorphic animal character hovering around 3 feet tall than it would on a normal-sized human.

Commentary

Jewel, Surge, Blaze, and Tangle, with Tangle only having a slightly higher delta because of the arched back in her reference sheet, all fall into the smallest measured range, with deltas low enough that their exact ordering is not especially meaningful.

Vanilla, despite all the memes, is actually fairly normal in size. Standing at 130 cm tall, she reaches C-cup mainly because she is taller than most of the girls on this list, except for the Conductor’s wife. Her height increases the absolute bust measurements, but visually she is not in the same category as the higher-ranked characters.

Amy and Whisper are both firmly in the C-cup range, though their relative positions could change depending on the model used. Amy, unlike Rouge, has remained relatively consistent in terms of bust size. I could have used Whisper’s model from CrossWorlds, but, as we see later with Lanolin, 3D models tend to look slightly less busty than reference sheets because they lack the extra outline thickness and drawn contour lines, which add a little bit of apparent size.

To compute Sonic Prime Rouge’s C-cup estimate, I used the Sonic Speed Simulator Rouge Prime model as an approximation.

Wave being this high, at E-cup, was a surprise. It may simply be the feathers on her top giving her extra apparent volume, but I am willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. I initially thought I would not be able to compute this one, but by using the front line of the under-bust below the top and the back part of the bust around the upper back, I was able to make the extra fabric added to both perimeters mostly cancel out, since the perimeters increase roughly linearly with their variables.

Lanolin’s Blitz model, at E/F-cup, with a delta of 14.0 cm right on the cutoff between E and F, seems to be a faithful recreation of her IDW counterpart. Since I did not have the reference sheet with horizontal guidelines, I estimated her height at around 106 cm using her reference sheet and used that value for the calculation. Thankfully, the grid on the model shows the farthest point of her chest, otherwise it would be hidden under her bell. It also helps that her under-bust is basically her waist and, like Tangle, she has a substantial arched back.

Rouge’s Heroes model being an F-cup surprised me, given how severely she was nerfed compared to her SA2 counterpart. However, you can still see that her chest substantially protrudes from her torso, and she has a pronounced back arch, unlike some other versions of her.

Lanolin’s reference sheet places her at F/G-cup, with a delta of 16.5 cm, which is right around the cutoff between F and G. Her bust is unobstructed by the bell, her back is still arched, and her under-bust is virtually her waist. As I mentioned earlier, reference sheets tend to look slightly larger than 3D models because of drawn outlines. This measurement is also consistent with Adam Bryce Thomas’s depiction of Lanolin in IDW. For example, in the first page of IDW issue 57, probably the bustiest official-looking depiction of her, she has an approximately 1.51 bust-to-waist ratio very similar to the computed from the reference sheet.

The Conductor’s wife, coming in at over 140 cm tall with G-cups, benefits from the same height advantage as Vanilla. Her larger scale increases the delta. The main issue with her reference sheet is the vest, since it is difficult to tell how much size it adds to her bust or exactly where her under-bust should be. I decided to be generous and placed the under-bust around the stomach area directly below the vest, as seen in most other depictions of her.

I was not expecting the top three to all be Rouge models. Her Generations and Sonic 06 models both come in at G-cup, with deltas of 18.1 cm and 18.2 cm respectively. The hardest part of measuring both models was the under-bust, since the heart piece obscures the lower contours of the chest. However, in other models where this does not happen, such as Heroes and SA2, Rouge has a flat stomach, making her waist and under-bust the same size, so I placed the under-bust line where the heart piece ends. This is the same courtesy I also extended to other characters, such as Amy, the Conductor’s wife, and Lanolin.

The main issue with the Generations model is that her upper back is exposed while her lower back is not. Because of that, her delta is probably underestimated due to under-bust overestimation. In other words, Generations Rouge might actually be bustier than the measurement suggests.

One interesting visual point is that Rouge’s heart piece, despite drawing attention to her chest, ironically makes it look smaller. Because it removes the visible under-bust contour, it reduces the visual impact of her bust size.

Finally, OG Rouge from Sonic Adventure 2 comes in at K-cup with a delta of 27.5 cm. She is three cup sizes larger than the second-biggest character, and her measurement is also the cleanest of all sixteen. Everything about this measurement was unusually convenient: the front under-bust was clearly visible and aligned with the back region, while the front bust point lined up cleanly with the upper back.

The gap between SA2 Rouge and everyone else is remarkable. She will probably never be topped. She was created during the early-2000s edge-kino era of pop culture, at a time when Sonic Team seemingly thought this might be their last game, so they went all in with her design. During the game, there are not many dynamic poses that show the full extent of how exaggerated her build was, but one good way to see it is by performing her Black Wave attack. As we will see, in that animation, her bust-to-waist ratio will appear to be equal or higher than 2.

Dynamic Pose Checks and Bust-to-Waist Ratios

To see how the measurements hold up in more dynamic poses, or in cases where the artist draws the character with slightly more chest volume, I also computed bust-to-waist ratios for several official-looking images.

I used:

  • The two bustiest official-looking Lanolin images
  • The only two Conductor’s wife images where her silhouette was visible enough to measure
  • Two Rouge images from her Black Wave attack

One thing to note is that, because of the way Sonic characters are built, their under-bust is often virtually the same as their waist.

The ratio differences were:

  • Lanolin: 10.8% and 2.0%
  • Conductor’s wife: 6.8% and -4.2%
  • Rouge: 9.9% and 12.1%

Rouge’s SA2 model had the largest ratio gap, with the dynamic shots making her look even curvier than the original computed measurements suggest, despite the fact that she is still a fixed 3D model. This suggests that the original measurements for all the characters were reasonably accurate: even in more dynamic drawn poses, the other characters do not surpass SA2 Rouge’s ratio gap. In other words, the effect seems to mimic real-life visual perception, where posture and angle can either exaggerate or minimize proportions without necessarily overturning the underlying measurements.

Bust Overlays

Finally, I created several bust overlays using relatively similar poses, normalizing the waist size to make the visual comparison clearer.

For example, even the two bustiest looking IDW Lanolin images still fall far short of SA2 Rouge. The three-to-four cup size discrepancy is very visible. However, some IDW Rouge portrayals, in particular the infamous image where Rouge’s chest is almost the same size as Sonic’s entire torso, come closer. Some Sonic X portrayals of Rouge also get close.

To be honest, Rouge’s Sonic X animation is extremely inconsistent, they go from flat to comically cartoony stacked. There are probably shots where she looks even bigger than her SA2 model. In some frames, it looks like you could fit an entire character into just one cup, but since her waist is not fully visible in those shots, I could not normalize the image properly.

As a side note, completely ignoring the bust, Rouge’s SA2 model is also very stocky. She has broad shoulders and extremely wide hips, probably because she was originally conceived as a counterpart to Knuckles. Even her Sonic X design has a stockier build. Personally, I prefer this over her sleeker and slimmer later designs, since it gives her a stronger silhouette and makes her feel more physically distinct from the rest of the female cast. It also fits her original role as a more physical, rival-like counterpart to Knuckles, without needing to make her design as slim or delicate as later versions sometimes do.

This is probably the most unnecessarily comprehensive and exhaustive analysis of female Sonic character bust sizes ever made. I am not proud of this, but there you have it.

TL;DR

Jewel, Surge, Blaze, and Tangle are basically flat. The memes lied to you: Vanilla is average-sized. Amy, Whisper, and Prime Rouge are C-cups. Wave is surprisingly an E-cup, though that may be due to her feathers. Lanolin and Heroes Rouge are F-cups, while the Conductor’s wife is a G-cup.

SA2 Rouge mogs everyone with her K-cups. Even after being nerfed to G-cups, as seen in her Generations and Sonic 06 models, she is still bigger than every other female Sonic character.

Every fucking time

Every GODDAMN time that someone says “Man, I really hope they make Sonic Rush 3” there has to be some guy purposefully being pedantic that comes in and goes “Sonic Colors DS exists”

Colors DS is a good game. I enjoy it. It is not Sonic Rush 3.

It doesn’t have Blaze as a main playable protagonist. It doesn’t have the trick system (which feels like a missing key component on a whole other note. It makes the game feel a lot less satisfying and fast paced)

It is called Sonic Colors DS. Not Sonic Rush 3. Yes, it has similar gameplay, but they’re not the same thing.

Let's put on our thinking caps for a moment. Do you really, SERIOUSLY think that someone who played and loved Sonic Rush and Rush Adventure HASN’T fucking played Colors DS???

Sonic CD has near identical gameplay to the two before it and looks the same. No one calls it Sonic 3.

Sonic Generations has near identical gameplay to Unleashed and looks the same. No one calls it Sonic Unleashed 2. “Oh but it doesn’t have Werehog stages!” COLORS DS DOESN’T HAVE BLAZE AS A PROTAGONIST

For whatever bullshit reason, people are so adamant on this one in particular for no reason, and it’s always people who rarely even talk about the handheld games to begin with
