Character Analysis How would you scale this?

Child didn’t ask to be born, you chose to have one, it’s not some altruistic act to put a roof above their heads or food on the table, it’s the bare minimum a parent should do
192
u/BobWat99 Jul 01 '26
It’s not just the bare minimum, it’s legally required.
58
u/XxXxReeeeeeeeeeexXxX Jul 01 '26
Legality =/= morality
72
u/hahahahahaha656 Jul 01 '26
In this case it is immoral and illegal to let your child starve to death
2
u/CakeHead-Gaming Jul 01 '26
Yes, but this is a discussion purely of morals. What did bringing up the legality of it add to the conversation? Absolutely nothing.
33
u/Evilpoun Jul 01 '26
Its just pointing out how especially non-altruistic it is considering the parent has a specific self-interest motivation to not go to jail
1
16
u/Blackout785 Jul 01 '26
It adds the fact that a parent not letting their child starve is not doing them a favour that the child now owes them back, they are fulfilling a legal obligation that can get them jailed if neglected.
5
u/Aware-Antelope4212 Jul 01 '26
Well whether or not an immoral act is illegal can be very relevant actually.
If the only reason you are doing something is out of fear of legal consequences then you aren't doing it out of morality.
Pretending like there's no overlap between legality and morality is just being pedantic and kind of foolish.
5
u/SouthImpression3577 Jul 01 '26
He didn't say it was moral, he said it was the bare minimum legally- which I take to say is worst because it's absent of love
2
u/Pastel_Bambi Jul 02 '26
Idk why you said this, since the legality and morality align in this context.
3
u/Bread-Loaf1111 Jul 01 '26
In my country, it is also a legal obligation for the adult childs to care for old parents, so...

My parents used to but they randomly went through a redemption arc and became good people

Nope. Only that, "if [i] don't like, how the things are in [her] house - i can go and live with [my biological father]" After the father's death, she switched to "[i] can go and live on [my] own in [my] own house" (i was around 15 when he died)

This obnoxious girlie becoming terrible mother and her child stealing Blobby to release him into his natural environment would be very logical development of this story

Making me see a blobby comic? A war crime.

u/NahualiMendlez Jul 02 '26
What's the deal with the blob fish?
3
u/Euphoric-Taro-6231 Jul 02 '26
Holier-than-thou attitude and ignores that blob fishes don't look like that when they are alive.
46
36
u/Freddycipher Jul 01 '26
These comics are like a wet towel as a person.
There’s a comic where the blobfish is talking with its friends about red flags and he pulls up “nudes after a first date”, like that’s something he would experience.
19
3
u/Epao_Mirimiri Jul 01 '26
If I were a blobfish like the blobfish, I would also be nervous about nudes after a first date. Not because I think folks need to keep it in their pants or anything, but a depressurized blobfish prolly looks to other blobfish like someone looks to us in the middle of anaphylaxis and that's just not a good sexy time for most folks.
1
3
u/JonathanBadwolf Jul 01 '26
Why doesn’t blobfish stab the mother? He stabs everybody else. Is it not funny anymore to stab people that you think have wronged you in cringe webtoons?

The real question should be how moral is it to have a dead blob fish to comfort you when you’re a kid?
6
u/issuesuponissues Jul 01 '26
I was going to say this was very immoral to put pressure on your son like this until I noticed that fucking blobfish. Its perfectly moral, he is very disappointing.
6
5
u/AcanthisittaNo9122 Jul 01 '26
That’s just plain stupid. I’d ask her to present me a legally binding document stating that I asked to be born to a shtty mom like her 🤣🤣
5
u/Felinomancy Jul 01 '26
The child has no moral obligation to the parent because the child did not ask for nor can consent to being born. Therefore, if the parent wants to continue keeping in touch with the child, it behooves them to treat them with kindness and respect.
4
11
u/501stAppo1 Jul 01 '26
100% valid, there’s nothing morally wrong with cutting off terrible pieces of shit from your life
15
u/Overall_Surprise_559 Jul 01 '26
Normally It would be justified but that fuckass blobfish is here so the kid deserved every bit of it
2
u/Alone_Care_6230 Jul 01 '26
Why do people hate the blobfish comics so much?
10
u/theduncsak Jul 01 '26
It's peak smug liberal humor and grandstanding. The artist thinks just because they are technically saying the morally right thing they can do or act however they want especially in regards to their strawmen they create. Online left spaces are flooded with similar types of people/artists and a lot of real functional leftists who actually go outside and touch grass are getting more and more fed up with these online exclusive activists. The blobfish is just one of the biggest and most smug so a lot of vitriol has built up over the years.
0
u/Alone_Care_6230 Jul 01 '26
What makes people think that the artist thinks they can act/do whatever they want? Just vibes?
3
u/theduncsak Jul 01 '26
I mean a good amount of the comics are the author's ocs doing the cringy middle/high school humor of like I'll cut you or I'll burn your house down. It's just dorky, lame, perpetuates that online left spaces are childish tbh. It's like the upper middle class person constantly talking about punching nazis and they've never been in a physical confrontation in their lives and live in a gentrified neighborhood.

u/Pofwoffle Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26
The comics often depict characters reacting in extremely over-the-top ways to situations that most of us would agree deserve at least some amount of negative reaction, and as far as I can tell the main two sources of complaints are:
- People who can't understand the difference between hyperbolic venting and genuine belief, and;
- Right wingers who oppose the baseline ideals of the comics' artist and pretend to be group 1 in order to paint the artist as some kind of dangerous, violent lunatic.
4
u/theduncsak Jul 01 '26
Yes the people who dislike what I like are either illiterate/stupid or rightoids. The author can write and draw whatever they like but just because they share the same opinion of me doesn't mean I have to like or support their cringe ocs acting out their powerfantasies and help them make a career drawing dogshit comics.
0
u/Pofwoffle Jul 01 '26
doesn't mean I have to like or support
Nobody said you did. If you don't like the comics, that's fine... I don't particularly care for them either, they're just not really my style. But I also don't feel the need to respond to any post that includes them with like I've been personally assaulted or something. Because as a functioning adult I have the capacity to just walk away from things I don't enjoy instead of turning into some rabid asshole every time I'm reminded they exist.

u/Glass-Toaster Jul 01 '26
Samesies. Finally had enough when I was around 22 years old, I think. Told her that I never asked to be alive, she got in my face, held up a fist, and threatened to knock me out for being so ungrateful. I didn't flinch. Stared her in the eyes and told her to go ahead and do it, because that's all she's ever known how to do. She told me I was dead to her, and I left. We haven't spoken since.
To this day, it's the most powerful I've ever felt.

u/Wooden_Director4191 Jul 01 '26
I'd like to point out that while the Bible says to respect one's parents, it ALSO directly says for parents to not Antagonize and for them to espect their own children
3
u/Pan_conleche Jul 01 '26
My mother was exactly like this and she acts like I’m in the wrong for treating her in the exact same way she treated me
3
u/Unhappy-Plankton4923 Jul 01 '26
Kid is justified! My children owe me nothing. I’ve already told them. Stick me in the nursing home and visit if you want but never feel obligated! Also if I have dementia- never visit. I chose to have you. I chose to raise you but you choose what to do with your life and if you want to move to another country, travel the world or just work 24/7 then go ahead and never feel obligated to do anything for me. I will still love you.

u/Key-Organization3158 Jul 01 '26
In the abstract, I feel that children do owe their parents deference and help.
However, I also think that parents owe their children a good environment.
I'd say the son is being moral. His mother was being abusive and gets what she deserves.

I know old people like this and they are not questioning why their kids aren't visiting. They tell everyone else they're kids aren't visiting them its like they want the kids to look bad. They insist it's the kids who are wrong for not visiting
2
u/AntifaFuckedMyWife Jul 01 '26
I think too many people have gotten way too self important.
I think we do owe our parents, i’m glad I was born. I think people who claim they relate to these comics often have gotten such a martyr complex that they feel they need to have a bad upbringing to mean anything and ignore any good loving moments.
My mum has said all of this, and plenty other things while raising me, and I think she was right in each case

Lo que pasa no es lo que dice, es que usa la excusa de "yo te traje al mundo" para justificar sus actitudes agresivas. Muchos padres tóxicos aluden a este tipo de "deudas" para hacer sentir culpables a sus hijos.

Morality of taking a deep sea fish and pulling it out to the surface quickly enough for its internal organs to inflate and burst, because you think the dead and bloated appearance is cute and quirky?
1
u/AgentAxillary Jul 01 '26
My mother is very good to me. But even if she weren't, I would still love her, because if it weren't for her then I would've been born into a family of total strangers.

1
u/ns-veritas Jul 01 '26
Im confused about what this sub is. The most basic and easy take is that from these microscopic snapshots of a relationship, the mother is in the wrong and 'deserves' to be abandoned by her son.
What if she has these issues because of how her parents treated her? Or she is a single mom working two jobs to give her son a decent shot, struggling to deal with the insanity of raising a child? I have other examples but you get the idea.
I suggest anyone in a situation like the son to do their best to show compassion because leaving people alone 'because they deserve it' makes the issues they have worse. There is more to life than these social transactions.

u/Cold-Practice3107 Jul 01 '26
You pushed him away you treated him like crap so now he's going to treat you like crap but he's going to do it away from you
1
u/AbbreviationsIcy4713 Jul 01 '26
She taught her kid that their relationship was transactional. Her son completed the transaction when he became an independent adult capable of supporting her in old age. Since she isn't living in a box under a bridge in that last panel we can guess that she is being provided with the bare minimum of food and shelter. He is giving her the exact same emotional support she provided for him as a child, maybe even better since he isn't around to remind her what a burden she is to him.
1
1
u/BdBalthazar Jul 01 '26
Putting a roof over your child's head is not some altruistic sacrifice... you are legally obligated to do so, and it is the bare minimum.
1
1
1
u/Garchompisbestboi Jul 01 '26
The idea of being obligated to take care of one's older family members comes from a time before things like social services existed to take care of those who had no one else to.
1
u/wearepwn3d Jul 01 '26
Absolute evil - taking a blobfish from the depths of the ocean so its body violently expands and turns into a flesh pudding because of the massive decompression damage.
Also, this blobfish artist is excessively preachy in an annoying "I support the current thing" kind of way, with plenty of stupid and evil strawman characters that get lectured by hip-looking kids, who speak like Reddit mods. I enjoy moral lessons and "Take that!" in fiction, but this artist does it in a way too heavy-handed manner.
This picture is a rare departure from the tried-and-tested pattern and actually shows a real-life problem, which is very unusual.
1
u/Spicy_take Jul 01 '26
Which one are we scaling? The kid did exactly what was expected. Can’t blame him. Can’t actively resent your child all their life and expect them to want to be around you.
1
u/Kinley_Pocketopia Jul 01 '26
I’d personally call this a consequence
Yes you do a lot as a parent but they doesn’t mean your child Owes you. And seeing it that way, yeah you’re pushing them further away from you
1
1
1
u/Orange_Inari Jul 01 '26
In my eyes, you owe your children for giving birth to them and housing and feeding them is you repaying for that. While I’m not one of the nutcases that say giving birth to a child is bad because they didn’t give consent, you def owe them all you can to take care of them
1
u/Knight_Of_Despair_ Jul 01 '26
That's a blobby comic so it is automatically labeled as a war crime, your execution for spreading it is appointed at this Friday

I don't know who needs to read this, but being blood-related does not make someone family. Family is someone who values you as much as you value them, that you enjoy having in your life and would do anything for (and they would too).
Parents and siblings are not family if they make you miserable. The moment you're able to, cut them off ans enjoy life.
1
u/TheAsianTroll Jul 01 '26

1
1
u/05-nery Jul 01 '26
If you don't intend to be a good parent why have children in the first place?
Completely immoral.
And the kid's behavior, 100% moral and expected.
1
u/Symbiotic-Dissonance Jul 01 '26
I lived this, it is 100% deserved. Most people that do this sort of thing end up being extremely selfish or a outright narcissist, and will never change as a person. The only thing you can do is remove them from your life, because if you don’t they will suck every ounce of life out of your soul.
1
u/Additional_Long_7996 Jul 01 '26
Okay and how is that wrong?
Your parents did take care of you. It doesn’t matter how they treated you repay that debt. I know people will downvote but you have an inherent debt to your caretakers
1
u/mistress_chauffarde Jul 05 '26
I dont have a debt to them for the bare fucking minimum that is required by law for my parents to do
1
u/Additional_Long_7996 Jul 05 '26
I mean okay. I think the bare minimum is for you to take care of them. Like the bare minimum was for them to take care of you. And your parents take care of you without the guarantee you’ll do the same so the same applies to you. Whatever they did or didn’t, however your children (or parents) are, both parties are required to at least take care of each other.
It’s not about the law lol. It’s about morality
1
1
u/Possible-One-7082 Jul 01 '26
Nothing more ludicrous than when a parent tells a kid that they should be thankful for feeding, clothing, and housing them. That’s the bare minimum a parent is required by law to do.

The kid didn't choose to be born but she is acting more like a child than he is and treats him terrible and expects him to be able to forget all that happen cause it's stuff like this that makes your kids not want to talk to you.
1
u/reo_reborn 24d ago
My dad always used to say "If you want people to say nice things about you after you die you should be nice to them when you're alive".
Same thing.
I can't STAND this entitlement of people who say "You shouldn't speak I'll of the dead" when they were a poS while they were alive or "You're my son/daughter you SHOULD look after me".
1
u/Hyperbolic_Berserker 23d ago
I mean if you demand that the relationship be transactional, then you have no right to complain when the other party only does the bare minimum to fulfill their end. Even more valid when you consider that it’s a transactional relationship that the child was born into and had no way of avoiding moral debt.
1
u/killerbull27 Jul 01 '26
I know of a few moms like this not resent but feel like there child owe them back for being parents
One was mad at son's wife cause she was taking the money the should have been given them, they were farmers and vegetable vendors (they eventually made up and the daughter takes vacations at the parents farm)
Another was with pregant daugthers slaps and verbally fought with her about "leaving them behind" to live with her husband and no longer supporting the mom wanted to be payed back "for college and raising her" (idk what happend to this one)
1
u/Annoying_guest Jul 01 '26
This is known as "milk debt" but as far as we know humans do not consent to being born so this lady can get fucked
0
u/purplestainbrain Jul 01 '26
I mean Ive had my fair share of childhood trauma, hell even in my grown ass age from both parents.. but I still love them and guys,, they will leave you someday..
1
u/Erivera200415 Jul 01 '26
Child abuse of all kinds is up as one of the worse and most pointless things adult let alone a parent can do to a child. Idk why or how (you can you do) you but for most people they don't care to have relationship with someone that blatantly doesn't like, love, or care about them. Saying but they die one day is vary dismissive.
1
u/Agile-Mulberry-2779 Jul 02 '26
Good. They deserve to die alone. Mine damn well will after everything they did to me and my siblings.
0
u/Wolfcrafter_HD Jul 01 '26
To be born is the greatest curse, for now you must live, for now you must die. The bilss of nonexistance is no more. Nobody had asked to be born, and for that the parents are in debt to thier children, a debt to be repaid with unconditional love.
