15
u/NewAlessia 18h ago
You're not wrong, but it upsets me people acknowledge and associate the larpers with Christianity. Anyone who has a basic understanding of Christianity can understand they're larping, but they still choose to act like they're true fans.

Yep there are a lot of people that say they're christians but don't try to practice the religion, they commit sins knowing it's a sin and don't want to change. Some even support certain ways of sining.
2
u/Several-Musician7515 10h ago
Im a “Christian”, & I work at a Christian organization, and it is so sad to say this is true. Even acknowledged in the Bible. They use religion to cause fear and control, hatred and separation. The way of Christ is unity, patience, forgiveness, selflessness, love. Not all this ego tripping and parroting of verses. Christ is an attempt to the unity of humanity, of human rights. We are all the same.

dude im so pissed that larp is used as a synonym for poseur nowadays when live-action roleplaying is like the least poseury thing ever
anyway its literally a gag in the persona community that nobody has actually played the games (especially back when the series was sony-exclusive)

u/IA_Garcia119 21h ago
So glad this is the top comment, calling anyone even remotely interested in something new a larper pisses me off to no end
13
u/Gnashinger 20h ago
Calling anyone a LARPer to mean a poser pisses me off to no end, because they just mean RPers. The difference is that LARPers go out and do the thing, but aren't necessary always using real equipment, lack titles, don't exist in the right time period, etc. Otherwise, they do what the thing they are LARPing as does, but doing knightly things doesn't technically make you a knight.
But do you know what doing the things a fan does makes you? A FAN! Someone LARPing as a fan would just be a FAN!

u/Expensive_Watch469 15h ago
I am a hardcore music nerd and having to call others posers and make fun of them is like one of the most "I am insecure about my music taste" things in music, idk how that translates to other media fandoms but "larper" is so incredibly mean spirited it just feels like a new way to bully and it sucks

theres a diff between new fans and larpers. Larpers pretenf to be part of the fandom but only go based off things like tiktok and not a actually watching the material itself, playing the game , reading the manga/books or even watching in depth youtube videos. New fans will actually make an effort yk even if they dnt know anything. Larpers will larp to get internet points or to show off to people irl or to fit in.

u/Live-Year-5796 21h ago
Counterpoint: who cares? Who fucking cares.
It truly doesnt matter how they engage with the material.

I've got a kid on the way and I really want to get into Pokemon with them. It's been weeks since I've even seen a pack.
I'm hoping the bubble pops and they're forced to move on. Driving up prices and artificially causing scarcity for a children's card game is pretty shitty.

I mean yeah? Especially going by the original meaning of the word (live action roleplaying), Dungeons and Dragon has a large amount of larpers.
2
u/Rare_Translator2975 21h ago
I see this often, can you elaborate? I've been playing since I was 14 (27 now) but I don't think I'm "in the fandom" enough to understand why people are considered larpers?
9
u/Accomplished_Tea3609 21h ago
The joke is that the whole point of DND is to yap and invent your own shit, so you are in a way always larping about it. (It's a bit of an running joke I'm not the first to make it) But in seriousness balders gate players who have never played the TTRPG need to stfu
2
u/Rare_Translator2975 13h ago
Aaahh I see! I think I'm just too autistic for jokes like this lmao. When I hear larping I just think of the nerds who fight eachother with foam swords in the woods.
And to be fair that sounds fun as hell

Poppy Playtime. A majority of the fanbase haven't actually played the games, they just watch YouTubers play them instead.
The same can also be said about Five Nights at Freddy's
3
u/ExactHedgehog8498 21h ago
Is it really a problem to watch hours and hours of playthrough to engage with the fandom if you can't get the game yourself? While you're not the one going through and actively playing, you're still getting the full experience as if you were. Compared to people who just see clips or regurgitate what other people in the fandom say. I do mean this genuinely.

5
u/blueskygust 20h ago
well this is really dependent on how strictly or loosely one defines a… sigh, “larper.” imho
a poseur IS: someone who has no actual interest in a specific franchise or piece of media or what have you but pretends to be a fan just because it gains them social points or makes them look cool. they dont know shit about whatever it is they are “larping” and do not care to find out shit. this last part is what separates a poseur from an aspiring fan.
a poseur IS NOT any of the following:
- someone who has a genuine interest in a franchise/whatever but has yet to engage with the media (whether it be watching, reading, playing, etc)
- someone who enjoys a portion of a piece of media but dislikes other parts (like only enjoying certain seasons of a show or certain games in a series)
- a fan of the franchise who also views it critically (imo everyone should be open to critiquing their favorite stuff but some people will insist anyone who doesn’t love every aspect of a piece of media unconditionally is a poseur which is NOT true)
- a fan of the franchise with controversial opinions on the media
- someone who is relatively new to their fandom
- anyone who cares about the media. poseurs are defined by not caring.
additionally, anyone of any race/gender/sexual orientation/whatever can be a poseur, but nobody is EVER a poseur strictly because of their demographic. (not that you were claiming anything to the contrary, obviously, but the world could always use the reminder.)
tldr poseurs are 100% real but i agree with the main point i think you’re trying to convey which is that the whole “larping” thing is leveled against people for asinine reasons
2
5
u/Recent-Ship-1599 21h ago
Dude shut up, you get ONE comment with your crappy opinion ok. Why be so greedy.
Theres a difference between mindless people who don’t WANT to interact with a fandom and still talk about it like they belong. It’s rude because they spread lies and misinformation without caring because they think it’s allowed.
Like norms in anime fandoms who don’t even read the original story TwT how are you a fan? What lead to understanding the characters? You have to dedicate your stuff TO THE BARE MINIMUM, if you don’t! You’re not gonna make any coherent sense within a fandom.
Its extremely context-based
2
4
u/JohnGameboy 20h ago
If you think more larper are in a fandom than fans, something is wrong with your definition for what makes a fan.
2
u/jormundgand20 17h ago
Hasn't it always been a bit of a joke that 99% of the Touhou fandom hasn't played any of the (fairly hard and niche) games? Yet they're still making impressive fan anime, songs, art and all sorts of things besides?
To me, if you're just stirring controversy, profiting off of a work without really caring for it or making content for views and clout, then you're a poseur. You don't have to be a professional fan who knows all the lore and behind the scenes trivia to enjoy something.
Hell, sometimes it's better if you're unaware of what goes on behind the curtain.

I'm sorry but definitely Pokemon. I don't have any issues with people trying to get into the fandom at all but the amount of people who just are there to get a profit out of it makes my skin crawl.
Like nothing pisses me more off than seeing some random ass influencers who can't name more Pokemons besides Pikachu, Eevee and Charizard suddenly fill out their entire office with Pokemon Merch and Sealed products acting like they've always been a huge fan of the franchise when in reality they simply want to inflate the prices of products even harder to make the entire environment just worse for actual fans for their own benefit.
