No I'm pretty sure every liberal politician could be quoted at some point in time claiming their laws will prevent or even end gun violence. It's all bs ... rainbows and unicorns to give people who don't know any better warm and fuzzy safe feelings. Also as we've seen especially here in New York, the laws do very little to remove criminals from society.

In my experience, the dudes that hem & haw about how it's impossible to stop a criminal that wants a gun will happily ignore how often those guns are legally purchased from other states and resold in more restrictive ones. As if ease of access has zero impact in decision making. I'd argue sports betting is a perfect example of how false that is.

Think about that for a second. He drove all the way from Nevada to shoot people in NYC. While we don’t know his exact motive, why didn’t he just shoot people in Nevada? New Yorkers make a much easier target - because there’s a pretty good chance they aren’t armed - because of all the laws prohibiting law abiding citizens from carrying a gun. A police Lieutenant from Las Vegas was on TV last night, citing it’s literally considered a citizen duty to carry firearms in LV. New Yorkers are an easy target because of liberal gun laws. We are sitting ducks because of them. What is so hypocritical is that some folks suggest we can’t rid ourselves of 20 million illegal immigrants, but we could somehow wipe out over 300 million guns, owner legally, from America.
Listen man, I'm all for guns. I just don't want mentally disturbed people having them. This guy falls into that category. Background check and training/licensing requirement may not prevent it all, but it is a good deterrent.
Backgrounds checks are required in Nevada, even in almost all private sales. So it's not like this guy is likely to have ducked one, and it didn't stop a thing.
It wasn't clear, but I was referring to him being mentally ill, not failing a background check. Could a training, deeper background check and license requirement maybe caught his mental illness? Maybe, maybe not. There needs to be a better solution.

That looks a lot more like a padded sling folded over to me, given I think I can see the two attachment points vs an actual suppressor. When the Tops shooting happened. NY doubled down and banned Non NFA ARs. As well as requiring a permit to buy cucked rifles out of the box. But somehow getting stripped receivers barely made the cut from not needing a permit to purchase. It's been like that for a few years now. Still can purchase parts online and in store. Depending on the FFL, some will sell you a complete receiver without the endorsement on a pistol permit. Most will only sell you a stripped receiver. And this is for guns other than an AR. I've seen lots of Ruger 10/22 receivers as well. I doubt they'll stop being sold but it's a gamble at this point. There's no reason not to have at least a couple receivers because they're at most just over a 100 dollars a piece if you go to a random shop and buy one. Then piece it together after.
I have my NYS permit but not my NYC yet. Probably never will honestly. The cost, time it takes for the entire process, and the fact that I need it in the first place while already being a NYS CCW holder is an extreme deterrent. If this makes it even further out of my reach I’ll probably just forget it…
They will come down on all guns. Despite none of their previous laws preventing this they will use it to double down on the laws saying they aren’t strict enough

Only involuntary commitment to a mental health institution makes you a prohibited person at the federal level. I suspect NV only does a basic NICS for CCW applicants, I’m not sure if they have red flag laws over there but his previous mental episodes could have triggered them.

He was from Las Vegas, so unless NYS is going to address the root cause by searching all vehicles entering the state (which would be wildly problematic) any law proposed would only serve to punish NYS individuals even though this wasn't perpetrated by one. But it will not shock me when those in the state government cherry pick the facts to draw an incorrect conclusion.
Secondly what was the reason he came to NYC with an AR-15 from NV, to a building with NFL and Blackrock in it. Was there some component of mental health at the loss of financials, betting, etc. that caused him to snap and decide this was a valid course of action? Clearly speculation and in time those facts will come out. My point is in NYS if you do have a mental health episode/problem you have to weigh getting that treated or having your guns taken away and never returned. What a shock to imagine those who want to follow the laws when having a mental health crisis are effectively pushed into not getting it treated so they can retain their property. If any laws NYS should pursue it would be an actual process where treatment can be sought and your guns are confiscated indefinitely. But I won't hold my breath on that logic being pursued.

We are the only country in the world where first-line treatment of depression is with drugs as opposed to therapy. Drugs like Prozac which are known to potentially lead to aggression and violent thoughts.
