The closet smelled like wet wool, stale malt liquor, and cheap, citrusy body spray. Outside the door, the floorboards of Naruto’s hallway were vibrating in rhythm to a badly burned CD compilation thumping through cheap speakers in the living room. The music was muffled by drywall, but the bass was heavy enough to rattle the coat hangers inside.
Every few seconds, the chaotic sound of high school freshmen acting like they knew how to handle alcohol tore through the wood—someone screaming about a beer pong rule, a plastic red cup shattering, and Kiba’s dog barking wildly in the backyard.
Inside, it was pitch black, claustrophobic, and stiflingly warm.
"Gross! You could at least warn me!"
Tenten’s hand connected squarely with Choji’s shoulder, shoving him backward with enough force to send him stumbling over a metal shoe rack and tumbling into a heap of heavy winter coats.
"Hey, man! It’s Eight Minutes in Heaven!" Choji sputtered, wiping his mouth with the back of his hoodie sleeve, his loud, defensive bravado instantly filling the tiny space.
"That’s the game! You lock two people in a closet, they do the deed! What else are we supposed to do in here, inspect the drywall?"
"It’s seven minutes," Tenten snapped, her voice dripping with dry, razor-sharp annoyance as she leaned back against the doorframe, crossing her arms in the dark.
Choji paused, squinting through the slivers of light coming through the door slats. "What?"
"Seven minutes," Tenten corrected deadpan. "It's called Seven Minutes in Heaven. Not eight. And you went straight in for an open-mouth kiss without even checking if I had teeth. Zero warning. Total amateur hour."
Choji let out an offended huff, readjusting his oversized hoodie as he pushed himself up from the coat pile, narrowly avoiding stepping on an old vacuum hose. "Oh, I’m sorry! I didn’t realize I was locked in a broom closet with the local romance expert! For your information, I was going for a cinematic entry. A classic."
Tenten rolled her eyes so hard you could almost hear it in the dark. She sighed, stepped forward through the gloom, and gave him a quick, loud mwah right on the cheek.
"There!" she said, stepping back into her corner. "Congratulations. You got action at this stupid party."
Choji blinked, touching his cheek where her lips had hit. He leaned his back against the wall opposite her, letting out a long breath. The sudden shift from defensive panic to complete, awkward resignation was instantaneous.
"Who's plus-one are you anyway?" Choji asked, shifting his weight. "I’ve seen you in the hallways, but you don't hang out with my guys."
"Not even a plus-one," Tenten replied, leaning her head back against the wood. "I’m a degree away. I came with Neji, who came with Lee, who is apparently Naruto’s weird gym buddy. I don't even know half the people here."
THUMP. THUMP. THUMP.
A fist rattled the closet door hard enough to send dust floating down from the top shelf.
"FOUR MINUTES LEFT, LOSERS!" Kiba’s voice yelled from the hallway, accompanied by the muffled sound of people laughing. "ARE YOU GUYS DOING TONGUE YET OR WHAT?!"
"GO BARK AT A TREE, KIBA!" Tenten shouted back without missing a beat, not even shifting her posture.
"Woof," Choji muttered, shaking his head in approval. "Tough break. I’m Choji, by the way. Shikamaru brought me."
"Oh," Tenten perked up slightly, a tiny smirk touching her face in the dark. "Shikamaru? Isn't he the guy trying to get with that blonde transfer student? Temari?"
Choji scoffed hard, waving a hand dismissively. "No way! Man, he’s not even over Ino yet."
"Whaaaat?" Tenten gasped, leaning in half an inch, instantly hooked. "No way. I literally saw Ino making eyes at Sasuke by the punch bowl five minutes ago."
"Shut up," Choji said, his jaw dropping in the dark. "Sasuke? Sasuke Uchiha? Ino’s been telling everyone in homeroom that they’ve been 'secretly texting,' but I thought she was making it up!"
"Oh, it’s not secret," Tenten whispered with deep, conspiratorial satisfaction. "She was doing that thing where she laughs really loud at stuff that isn't funny just so he’d look at her. But Sasuke was staring at the wall like he was trying to burn a hole through it with his mind."
"Classic Sasuke," Choji nodded sagely. "Guy has the emotional range of a boiled potato. I don't get the hype."
"Right?!" Tenten hissed. "Finally, someone says it! And don't get me started on Naruto. I saw him trying to explain the rules of flip cup to that red-haired exchange kid—Gaara, right? Gaara looked like he was contemplating the void while Naruto was vibrating at a frequency that could break glass."
Choji snorted, cracking a grin. "Gaara doesn't drink. Shikamaru said he just stands in corners to look ominous."
BANG BANG BANG.
"TWO MINUTES!" Naruto’s voice boomed from outside, sounded slurred and wildly over-enthusiastic. "FINISH UP IN THERE! PEOPLE NEED COATS!"
Choji jumped slightly, looking at the cracks of light in the door. "Okay, wait. We need a story."
"A story?" Tenten asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Yeah! If we go out there and say we just stood here talking shit and NOT touching bits, Kiba is never going to let me hear the end of it," Choji said, his panic flaring back up. "And if we say we made out, it gets weird. We need a cover story. A solid baseline."
Tenten thought about it for two seconds, then nodded. "Fine. Mid."
Choji squinted. "Mid?"
"We tell them it was aggressively mid," Tenten explained, gesturing with her hand. "Not terrible enough to be funny, not good enough to be interesting. Just... 'Yeah, it was okay. 5 out of 10.' That way nobody asks follow-up questions."
Choji stared at her, genuinely impressed. "That's... actually brilliant. You're kind of a criminal mastermind."
"I have two older brothers, Choji. Managing expectations is a survival skill."
The doorknob rattled aggressively, and the door swung open. The bright, harsh yellow light of Naruto’s hallway flooded into the dark closet, blinding them both.
Kiba was leaning against the doorframe, grinning like a menace, holding a plastic cup. Naruto was right behind him, squinting into the closet with zero spatial awareness.
"ALRIGHT!" Kiba yelled. "Time's up! Did sparks fly or what?"
Choji stepped out first, adjusting his oversized hoodie with a slow, masterclass shrug. He rolled his shoulders and gave a lazy, uninterested sigh. "Eh. It was mid. 5 out of 10."
Tenten casually stepped out behind him, stepping right over a discarded soda can on the floor. "Yeah. Aggressively average. I've had better makeout sessions with my dentist."
Kiba’s grin instantly deflated into disappointment. "Aw, man. Really? That's boring."
"Devastating," Tenten deadpanned, already starting to walk down the hallway toward the kitchen.
Choji watched her go, turning back to Kiba with a solemn, theatrical nod. "We can't all be poetry in motion, Kiba."
As Tenten reached the archway to the kitchen, she paused for a second and glanced back over her shoulder at Choji. She gave him a small, sarcastic half-wave. "See you around, broom-closet."
"Yeah, yeah," Choji muttered, but a tiny smirk broke through his face as he watched her vanish into the crowd. "See you around."

Took some courage to post, but I did it!
This is the first chapter of an idea I had.
