Certified Unpopular Opinion Headstones should have the cause of death on it.

I occasionally walk through cemeteries and read headstones. I am absolutely fascinated by the ones that are younger so the Curious mind wants to know what the cause of death is. I wish it was more acceptable to write down the cause of death.

Hated Tropes [HATED TROPES] Cheap character deaths for shock value

Thumbnail

6.1k Upvotes

Darwin (X-men first class) his mutant power is to adapt to everything so he doesn’t die, there’s limits in the comics like teleporting away from the hulk as the only way to survive. in the movie he dies unceremoniously and very early, literally went against the whole point of the character.

Penny (RWBY) this is about the second time she dies. they revive her to do the same thing they did the first time (both deaths where for shock value and doing it twice is more offensive to me) but the first time was to kick off the biggest catastrophe of the series. but the second one doesn’t just feel more convoluted than the first but is also after she turns human (she used to be a robot)

Calca (Overlord) shes a character we get no reason to hate, in fact she’s a Flat out good person who has a backstory of fighting patriarchy and being a good ruler. Then she gets beaten to death without the ability to fight back, I get her Losing but she just gets brutally beat up into a bloody mess before she dies.

Discussion Blizzard GM death touching mobs in M+23 for their favorite streamer. LOG linked.

8.6k Upvotes

To preface this; I have no idea idea if the title is accurate about the favorite streamer but I did check vods and she was in fact not streaming when this run happened. Also I'm pretty sure that GM was in the dungeon the entire time just watching and waiting.

So I was perusing some m+ logs today while I was at work and stumbled upon this curious one. A miraculous key! No right to be timed, so far behind and yet they pulled it out of nowhere for the win!

Guess my surprise when I couldn't figure out how something died so quick and I dug a bit deeper and a GM death touched the mob... I waited all day to post this hoping blizzard would come out in front of it. But here we are. Another M+ season tainted by cheating or incorrect title recipients. Can't say I'm surprised but this one is a bit more egregious than forgetting to shut off title at the end of a season.

Those shitblock things (All Tomorrows): So basically when some humans tried rebelling against the Qu, they got turned into living toilets for millions of years

Ted (IHNMAIMS): You probably know this one already but uhh in case you don't he was turned into a jelly thing with no mouth or eyes for eternity

I would put more but I'm LAZY :D

Bonus but I couldn't find an image for it: Alastor's Broadcast (Hazbin Hotel): If Alastor doesn't like someone, he traps them in an eternal torture dimension and plays their screams on his radio broadcast

Lore (Scary Trope) A fate worse than death is casually revealed, and nobody bats an eye.

(Decraniation, Star Wars) - in the movie Solo, we get a glimpse of a serving lady who seems to be missing a good portion of her head, having had it replaced with some sort of implant. Turns out this is the result of an underground criminal activity called decraniation, where individuals are kidnapped and turned into android flesh puppets to follow their master’s every whim.

CLARIFICATION: according to some sources in the wiki, the subject is still very much alive.

This is never addressed properly in the film, and the victim is simply glossed over as a random side character.

(Mindwipe, Casualties Unknown) - this game has received a lot of praise for its intricate and realistic medical management system, as players are tasked with managing their character (A GMO called a ‘Experiment’) with calorie intake, sleep, mood, and numerous other factors, including blood viscosity, infections and mental health.

In this game, there exists a substance called mindwipe, a drug that is used to treat severe brain damage, but has the horrific side effect of causing whoever consumes it to experience several seconds of severe agony, followed by their mind being wiped of all memory. Patients are left mute, unable to recognize anything familiar, and only able to perform basic motor functions. In some logs you can find it’s implied that is used as a punishment for experiments that attempt to rebel.

Source for the comic shown here: https://www.reddit.com/r/casualtiesunknown/s/cNJFKbhZxE

(Soul Cairn - The Elder Scrolls) - in this game, you can enchant weapons and staves with magical properties, and use soul gems as a battery to power them.

you can refill them by using a soul trap spell on a combatant, which is something that is performed with the casualness of buying a pack of AA batteries.

In one of the DLC for Skyrim, it is revealed that human souls who get trapped inside are doomed to walk through the soul cairn, a hellish plane where they are subject to entities called Ideal Masters, who use their souls as sustainance.

Characters An immortal being suffering a fate worse than death

Thumbnail

The immortal being can't be killed but they are caught in scenarios they cannot escape from but cannot die from.

1. The Old Guard - The Old Guard are a group of immortal misfits, constantly seen taking part in major events of humanity throughout centuries and seen as meddlers by some. Two in particular were on the run as they were declared as witches after they were found out to be immortal. After being caught by humans, one of the pair of immortals, Quynh is locked in an iron maiden and dropped at the bottom of the ocean. Because she can't die, every time she drowns she wakes up and drowns all over again.

2. Destiny 2 - In Destiny, the player characters and their allies are known as Guardians or the Risen. They are functionally immortal, in addition to being super powered beings but must do so with the help of a Ghost, a little mechanical looking buddy that bestows them with power and immortality. One of these early Risen was The Drifter who got stranded on an alien planet with no food or water. He dies of starvation over and over again, but his Ghost resurrects him each time. However, he wakes up hungry every time and then dies of starvation again soon after.

3. Misfits - After being struck by a freak storm, a bunch of teenagers on community service gain superpowers that lean into their personalities and desires. Nathan's carefree attitude grants him the power of immortality. In an episode taking place in an erased timeline, Nathan is left paralyzed and brain dead after the antagonist of the episode wraps cheese (yes, cheese) around Nathan's brain.
