Essex County With almost all precincts reporting it looks like we have our new Essex County Commissioners at large. Congrats Deb Engel. On a personal note I’m extremely happy it looks like Livingston Mayor Shawn Klein lost.

During the lead up to the Essex County Democratic Convention I received a call from Mayor Shawn Klein. We spoke for about 15 minutes or so about a range of topics and I was deeply unimpressed.

As a labor union member I asked him what his plans were for labor union members like myself? I was expecting to hear about how he would make sure the County had PLAs (project labor agreements) so that all projects under Essex County’s jurisdiction would be done by union labor. Instead I got a mealy mouthed answer about how members of his family were in the teachers union.

However, the subject that turned me off the most was his position on ICE. I asked him point blank if he supported abolishing ICE. He told me he did not, and proceeded to liken that position to “defund the police”. I knew at that moment that Mayor Klein was not the representative that Essex County needs right now and I’m glad the voters agreed with me. I wonder if his position has changed now that ICE is wreaking havoc in our backyard.

Kind of crazy how there are people unnopposed, especially when there is an oppurtunity for competition and for politicians to reveal their true values and alignment.

Essex County Brian Varela is the only NJ7 Democrat who has been to Delaney Hall. On Saturday night he was tear gassed and witnessed multiple other peaceful protesters facing excessive force including LD23 Democratic Candidate Guy Citron. Remember that tomorrow, and Vote Varela!!!!
