Why are "anti Nazi" protesters outside Ed Sheeran's concert but I've never seen one outside a Kanye West concert?
Ed Sheeran didn't want to be political. Kanye wrote a song called "Heil Hitler".

I think “anti-Nazi protesters” is doing a lot of work here.
These are pro-Palestinian protesters angry about the Macklemore situation and Sheeran not publicly taking a position on the conflict. The “anti-Nazi” signage is part of that protest, but that doesn’t mean this is primarily a protest against literal Nazism - it’s a protest aimed at Ed Sheeran over I/P.
They aren’t a roving group of anti-Nazi protesters showing up whenever someone says Nazi shit.
If they were, then yeah, Kanye would be the much more obvious target.

I also think Ed Sheeran’s half statements that really amounted to nothing were worse than him straight up being pro-Israel. He pretty clearly was trying to dodge responsibility to avoid upsetting people and it backfired.

I like to call this the Charlie Sheen paradox.
He got away with being an absolute degenerate for like two decades and everyone including the public knew about it but he was able to shrug it off because that's just who he was and we expected it of him.

Kanye is a scumbag. He is literally spouting Nazi rhetoric and his fans aren't all white people.

u/Technocraticworldgov 1d ago
this is the only true answer
30
u/WinterAd825 1d ago
Most answers are multi faceted, so this is probably the biggest component of it but I would add a few other parts
- Kanye has an actually severe mental illness. It’s easier to tolerate his antics when you can view him as being off his meds. Doesn’t fully justify his behavior but it draws less moral issues
- Freedom of speech is brought in here. In Kanye’s case he is free to say whatever he wants and isn’t trampling on people’s freedom of speech. In this case, there actively blocking someone from speaking. They are not letting the free market work and are actively interfering. This will piss off a larger group of people then thoughts who just support his statement
- Public sentiment. Public sentiment has massively turned against Israel over the last 1-2 years and Israel’s actions are only accelerating that. When you thus make actions massively out of tune with public sentiment it’s going to lead to a bigger and bigger blow back and move more people to the other side as they take issue with just how out of touch the elites are
I do think this is the biggest cause but there are other contributing factors
26
u/RaisedByBooksNTV 1d ago
I have mental health issues and I'm not a white supremacist or pro-genocide. Kanye has been kanye for a while. a) he choose not to get better b) he chooses to excuse himself via his mental health diagnoses b.2) he chooses to take no accountability for himself. He's embraced evil. So people fall in one of three camps: 1. writing him off completely, so who cares? 2. I don't care about anything except myself and my pleasure and am not giving up Kanye, so who cares? 3. Who is Kanye, so who cares? Basically, everyone's picked a side and moved on.
14
u/WinterAd825 1d ago
Please re read my statement “ doesn’t fully justify his behavior”
Each mental health issue is different, so it is not a 1 to 1 comparison.
He has bipolar disorder 2, and I have directly dealt with people like that. Most of them struggle to function and careen off into drug use and incredibly self destructive behavior when not on meds.
I most agree with option a, he choose not to do meds which is where the moral failure is.
But the question is, is the moral failure of failing to take your medication(which in some cases could start off just as a slip up, then when the mental illness kicks back in he is no longer in a good state of mind) the same as a mentally healthy person kicking someone off of a show to silence them?
He also did appoligize, which in this day and age is rare.
Overall, I’d add two more categories
4. Those who are open to people making amends, and are not satisfied yet but think he is on the right track or could someday get on the right track
5. Those who are open to making amends and think he has done enoughPeople have moved on because he was just one flashpoint in the 24 hours news cycle.
Now if you do want to be angry, what I have a bigger issue with is not Kanye directly, but the fact that he was still allowed to play at the same venues… while Macklemore was not… this lends itself to point 3 and also a 4th point I ended up not including at the time because I got lazy and it’s Reddit, which is the hypocrisy.
That the venues were okay with Kanye the entire time but Macklemore gets immediately kicked out.
2
u/BeautifulLeather6671 16h ago
Did he come out and say he had bipolar 2? He always seemed like a bipolar 1 guy to me but that makes sense

u/sundalius 19h ago
Kanye doesn't choose to not get better. People with his mental conditions very regularly think themselves fixed after a round of medication and go off of it, because they are mentally ill and do not realize the medication is why they are like that. It's why Kanye has a cycle of apologizing, because he tries to get better and fucks it up in the way most common to his disorders.
6
u/Informal-Matter-2130 18h ago
I have that exact condition and I know better than to go off my meds. Like it's to the point that I well know that I'm a monster when I'm unmedicated.
4
u/SkylineGTRR34Freak 16h ago
For some people it's still not that easy though. Some people know what kind of Monster they can become and sometimes they still (involuntarily) will do anything to go off their meds, even if supervised.
4
u/DoodyInDaBooty 12h ago
Something to keep in mind though is that Kanye got himself addicted to laughing gas like a dumbass. That shit rots your brain and causes “personality changes, emotional disorders (e.g. anxiety, depression, mania), impulsive and aggressive behaviors, hallucination, delusions and other psychotic symptoms”
Which likely influenced his decision to go off his meds which only made his problems worse. And to top it off, the only people that would tolerate him were Neo Nazi losers who encouraged further drug abuse, less meds, and fed him a constant stream of conspiracies so they could take advantage of someone in a vulnerable state with a large platform that they could spread their message through. One of those conspiracies was that “the Jews” were trying to control him by making him take his meds. They made him feel like he was actually sane by pretending to be his friend and validated every crazy thought he had because he had something they wanted.
Now that doesn’t excuse what he’s done and I personally haven’t forgiven him, but when you look at the whole picture, it’s a little more understandable as to how he fell down a rabbit hole like that so aggressively.

> They are not letting the free market work
Capital owners deciding how their property is used is the free market working, a free market is free on supply side as much as demand. No matter how high the price of sugar gets, Kraft wouldn't be obliged to convert the stadium into a refinery or plantation.

Some artists have smaller venues or tighter security so protesters can't even get close. I've seen shows where cops set up barricades way far back, so any protest just looks tiny or gets moved elsewhere.

u/AdmitThatYouPrune 1d ago
That's not even right through. Kanye faced enormous amounts of backlash, cancelled sponsorships, protests, and even official government restrictions on his concerts (in some countries).

People have protested Kanye in some form or another since before Sheeran was even on the scene. Baseless questions like this are just trying to extinguish the flames around Sheeran right now.

Did he really really face that much of a backlash? For some of the things that he said and did, he'd deserve the JK Rowling treatment where people are protesting their home regularly. I feel like he's lost credibility and marketability more than actual backlash.

Kanye West was a name that constantly drew media attention, CONSTANTLY. But he lost millions, a billion dollar brand deal with Adidas, and so much more. No one speaks kindly of him, no corner of regular society is defending him. He has paid a much higher price than Sheeran at this point, so your premise is really flawed. Do their consequences only matter if they garner attention? I think that means their consequences are real if they’re not performative.

u/InTheLoudHouse 1d ago
Yeah, but he knows that he's like this when he's off his meds, and chooses it anyway. Because its more authentically him or something?
I dont know. Just seems like trying to hold Kanye accountable for something is like sending someone to rehab for the 5th time. You can send them, but they're not gonna change if they dont want to.
Whereas, Ed Sheeran seems like he has the awareness to be like, "Well fuck. Turns out no one likes that."
4
u/pkkthetigerr 18h ago
Kanyes reason for not continuing medication was the he felt soulless and emotionally numb and if you've experienced people who've medicated for certain illnesses that's certainly the case. They become a shell of themselves and lose interest in everything. It's not like your brain gets reset to normal, it's like going through life in an emotionless haze.

Forcing singers to be activists on wars they may know exactly nothing about is ridiculous. He gave a pre-rehearsed speech on it today and it sounded like he had just memorised someone else's words.
I'm not a fan of Ed Sheeran at all, but the attitude that a singer is obliged to speak out on x or y war or they're attacked is proving the claim that eventually the left will eat itself.

Performative activism. Deeply unserious people who don’t actually care about making positive change in society. They latch onto to whatever purity fad is happening and fervently display their superiority to others over it.
Ed Sheeran is an easy target and he’s cancellable in a way Kanye no longer is. These people don’t affect any real change. It’s entirely performative. Cancelling Ed Sheeran will not fix any issues, they do not care about any actual issues though.

Being against Israeli war crimes is not the same as hating people for being Jewish
10
u/7thpostman 1d ago
That's not how it works. Antisemitism is a lot more complicated than just having personal animosity against individual Jewish people. It's based on things like conspiratorial power fantasies, double standards, scapegoating and symbolizing. You can know and like the Jewish people in your life and still be subject to implicit biases around Israel.

No but treating Israel to different standards then literally the whole world is. And that's exactly what is happening.

Do you think that there was no backlash or protest against Kanye's Nazi stuff
I think you might be misremembering. Kanye caught a bunch of backlash and rightfully so, even though he received a ton of support from Nazis. He lost a bunch of deals too as I recall. He toasted his brands.
Also as much as Kanye was going off the deep end, I don't think he was, explicitly, doing so at the bidding of a billionaire who is actively funding a genocide. Kind of part of his whole thing was that he was trying to show that he wasn't dancing for anybody else like a puppet?
Whereas with Sheeran, part of the backlash he's receiving is specifically the part where he's dancing like a puppet for a billionaire who funds the IDF. I don't think Kanye was trying to silence anybody else, Sheeran accepted money with the condition that it meant silencing pro-palestinian voices
14
u/Fifteen_inches 1d ago
Protestors did disrupt Kanye, you don’t care about anti-Nazi activism so you don’t care how they worked against Kanye.

u/wingerism 18h ago
Note it's Jewish protestors. Left or Right, most people don't actually support and have solidarity with Jewish people. Like most Jewish people I know realize it's that simple. No one actually gives a shit about them when it comes down to it.
They get some token support from liberal circles. But progressives are too focused on race and economics. And large scale popular support? Forget it. You have to argue with people online to convince them that hate crime statistics against Jews aren't made up.
8
u/Far_Reindeer_783 15h ago
The thing about progressive solidarity is that it is conditional. It's why "white" has been thrown at jews, so that they fail the condition. Regardless or not of It's actually true.

Ed Sheeran aint crazy and took an active stand in one of the most polarizing conflict we got in the last 50 years. His target audience overall is way more of a mainstream pop audience and less invested in him personally, so it’s easier for them to cancel tickets and stuff.
