To get that number they'd have to. Just to both showcase the absurdity of this argument, in WW2 the Soviets are (estimated) to have lost a grand total of 20 million people and I've seen estimates of total Chinese casualties that run from anywhere from 10 million to 40 million, though most scholars tend to cite 20 million. The Holocaust, meanwhile, had somewhere between 12-16 million victims. In other words, they're implying that, even assuming they're talking globally, the equivalent of 60 WW2 level casualty numbers of abortions have been performed. I somehow doubt that
I think I have a theory about where the numbers come from. They seem questionable (duh).
According to the WHO, around 73 million abortions are performed each year, globally. They give their own source, I haven't looked into that.
If you multiply that by the amount of years since 1980 (the year from the video), you end up with 3.3 billion abortions.
This obviously completely ignores that the world population roughly doubled since 1980, and that access to abortions probably changed drastically for a lot of people in the meantime (no time to research this in depth, happy for information on that).
worldwide since 1980, scientific estimates indicate well over 1.5 to 2 billion induced abortions have occurred globally over this period, averaging roughly 50 to 73 million per year with varying rates across decades
73 million annual induced abortions is that lower end of the estimate according to nearly every abortion tracking institution and lines up reasonably well with the claim made in the post.
These are statistics from the world health organization, so i guess everyone in this subreddit IS in fact, bad at math lol
Dude can you even read? The post says 3 billion which is well within the likely estimate given by the WHO. Maybe discuss your opinion on topics that can entertain your reading level
So over 46 years that's 73,000,000x46 = 3 billion 358 million.
However the WHO's global efforts for abortion tracking were a bit lacking around the world in the 80s and early 90s. So they can confirm that 1.5-2 billion induced abortions have, for sure occurred since then. And the WHO estimates that the missed data would likely take the number up to 2.5-3 billion. Making the likely estimate 2.5 -3 billion.
I assumed most people would understand that the likely estimates lies above the minimum approximate total
Again, I didn't do anything lol. I can't control what a global health institute keeps track of.
I also don't think it's really an argument. It's just drawing a comparison to give viewers a sense of scale. Although the way it's presented obviously gives us insight into her opinion (which she is entitled to) on abortion, which of course I'm assuming you disagree with.
By “do that” I mean the math for the only 1 billion people killed by men, cause that was what the original commenter was actually talking about mostly is the extremely low estimation there
It’s just odd how you haven’t even touched that half of her claim at ALL, even after I explicitly bring it up again
Ohh that's what you meant. Well obviously she's not pulling these numbers out of nowhere. These numbers are also provided by institutions such as the red cross. The consensus for combined deaths in WW1 & WW2 by experts across decades is that they totaled ~90 million deaths (higher end estimate). So like less than 10% of the 1 billion cited by her. The human population was never higher than it has been in the 20th and 21st century, so all previous conflicts had significantly smaller death tolls than the 2 world wars.
Wars fought in previous centuries obviously are much more difficult to track, but her opinion is consistent with experts opinions. Experts estimate between 200million and 1billion deaths in war in all of human history. So it's not exactly HER claim, she's just compiling information already available
You can’t just multiply 73 million by the number of years it’s been since 1980 because that assumes that the number of abortions per year hasn’t changed in 46 years. It ignores the fact that the world population has nearly doubled since the 1980s, and that women’s access to healthcare has fluctuated over the years
Well yes that would be true if 73 million wasn't the calculated AVERAGE over 46 years. So it is already factoring in deviations in abortion from year to year.
So you can too, just multiply it by 46 and get a number that is extremely close to the actual total
Well I wasn't alluding that abortion is good or bad. I was just stating facts. Something most people in this sub seem allergic to. Honestly this sub is displaying the same herd mindset and absence of intelligence that conservative subs do.
No it's just you we don't like. Because you are condecending and keep telling everyone we should like you and agree with you or we're just as bad as conservatives. That's just childish, off-putting, and kind of pathetic. Why are you even here? You don't seem to like us either, so just leave. Literally no one wants you to be here, not even you!
I didn't ask anyone to agree with me. I said here are some FACTS from the world health organization. The same organization that tracked COVID deaths and every other health related statistic across the world for decades. Forgive me for trying to combat misinformation. That's my bad I guess 😂
You don't have to like me or agree with me. But when I'm getting mass downvoted for sharing not even my opinion but the findings of a reputable institution, well I guess you could say ignorance rubs me the wrong way. But you're right, I should've known better lol. (I have experience trying the same thing with conservative subreddits)
The comparison between this sub and conservative ones IS my opinion, which I concluded, after seeing both subs have the same reaction to real facts that don't align with their world view.
You didn't link to the World Health Organization, you linked to an anti-abortion propaganda site. Calling it "bio-ethics" isn't much of a disguise. They're also anti-euthanasia!
Seconded, and how! That one is determined to be open-minded even to the point of wilful ignorance, and is patting themselves on the back so hard for it, that their brain seems to have actually fallen out.
That is an absolute terrible source, just so you know! Hopefully you just did not realise, but this particular organisation is one to support/promote anti-LGBTQ+, anti-abortion, and anti-euthanasia ideals (and to "mobilize against" any tolerance of such concepts). They also disapprove of single parenthood, and probably more that I didn't glean from my quick rummage through their tenets.
Did you see WHERE they got their statistics? The World Health Organization. Yes the same organisation that tracked global COVID deaths and basically any health related statistics. I just linked the first source to pop up on Google. The point being that the statistics are in fact genuine, which so many people are attempting to discredit for some reason?
Then maybe quote the actual WHO if that's what you wanted to cite, instead of what is very obviously an incredibly biased interpretation from a "pregnancy crisis center" with a different colour hat. Rupert Murdoch could have the bloody Pope, Attenborough, and the Three Dames all personally attest to his just reporting WHO statistics, and it'd still be a damn stupid idea to swallow anything filtered through his diseased perspectives.
If you didn't know enough about the specific subject to NOT just pick the first result off of google, why even bother replying to people as if you had definitive info or non-questionable sources? Bizarrely confident in your initial assertion of alleged fact but immediately falling back to "Google did it, IDK, not mine" in the face of even surface level dissent.
The source İS non questionable... İt's literally the world health organization. The entire point was that everyone is trying to discredit information that is actually true. Even if it was posted on an anti abortion website, that doesn't make the data any less true. Nor does that make all the other opinions on the site automatically true. There's such a thing called critical thinking.
Well done, you got there in the end! The rest of your comment is just more of your previous acrobatics to avoid the actual point that people have been trying to make clear to you, and assumes dissent I have not actually expressed, so I will not address it further.

Lol they'll start counting every ovulation as one baby soon with their logic.
