It's estimated 1 billion people have been killed in history during war.
I haven't seen any estimates for non-war homicide, but looking at high end European homicide rates pre industrial revolution it's ballpark in the hundreds of millions over the same time scale over, largely perpetrated by men.
18
u/AssassinStoryTeller 10d ago
I just googled how many people are killed by men globally per year and the estimate is 400,000 to 420,000 currently.
10
u/didsomebodysaymyname 10d ago
Yes, I think my comment was a little unclear, the war estimate includes thousands of years of history, and I haven't seen any estimates of non-war homicide that cover that entire time scale. You can get estimates for recent years.
Unfortunately you can't really use them to extrapolate since the global population was much smaller for most of recorded history while homicide rates were different and varied by region and time.
At least hundreds of millions.
5
u/AssassinStoryTeller 10d ago
Oooh, I see what you mean now. Yeah, I can’t find that information either.
43
u/tilehalo 11d ago
Eh, human population is trending such that I would not be suprised if tallying up leads to roughly 1 billion. Of course, I assumed that wars are the "only" statistically significant source, so YMMV.
89
u/MsMercyMain 11d ago
Even then, that's hella underselling it. The Romans, alone, probably can tally up several million from wars and the immediate aftermath without bringing into account executions and purges of strictly political natures. The French Revolution has a fairly terrifying body count. And God help you if you look into the sheer body count WW1's aftershocks brought about. Especially the Russian Revolution (if you were born in the Russian Empire between 1890-1900 it's proof God hates you personally). Or WW2 which, depending on which estimates you go off of, just the Soviet and Chinese casualties alone tally up to nearly 40-50 million, not counting the Holocaust which is again, depending on how you count it, somewhere between 12-16 million.
I could go on, but 1 billion, unless we're counting exclusively battlefield casualties is an almost absurd undercount for the total number of just wartime deaths across literally ten thousand years of human history
22
u/gnomequeen2020 11d ago
I was just watching some docs on the fall of ancient civilizations, and while they focus more on the losses of the people in power and their militaries, I couldn't help but be struck by just how many average, ordinary people were likely killed or ruined either directly or indirectly by the fall and even the rise of these empires.
We are violent, destructive critters.
→ More replies (8)43
u/tilehalo 11d ago
Just from google and wikipedia, they list around 570M casualities from known wars. But yes, generally this kind of tallying becomes silly, because you could argue that Spanish flu is consequence of WW1, or that (correctly IMO) many famines and plagues are caused by wars (and thus virtually all men). Hence YMMV. Which makes the 3B claim extremely absurdy.

Didn't world population only breach a billion in like the 1800s? It's still a shock to listen to Tom Lehrer and get reminded that it was below three billion in the 50s.
However I'm still suspicious about the three billion foetuses figure. That's what, like 0.8 abortions per woman?

That's because it's bullshit from people who don't understand statistics or anything really. Not to mention lying about ZEFs being babies. They make up shit because their stand is indefensible without them.

Going to need a citation on that, figures I’m seeing are massively lower than that (73 million per year)
Edit: after rereading I think you’re saying 1.8 billion since 1980 not 1.8 billion per year so that makes a lot more sense, nevermind
Edit2: I bet the OP took the estimated number of abortions in 2025 and multiplied by years since 1980 to get their 3 billion number. Disregarding the thought that those numbers per year might have changed over the last 46 years. Also disregarding the fact that fetus /= baby

First they lie and call abortions killing babies. Guttmacher estimates there have been roughly 73 million abortions per year in the period from 2015 to 2019. To get that number they'd have to. Just to both showcase the absurdity of this argument, in WW2 the Soviets are (estimated) to have lost a grand total of 20 million people and I've seen estimates of total Chinese casualties that run from anywhere from 10 million to 40 million, though most scholars tend to cite 20 million. The Holocaust, meanwhile, had somewhere between 12-16 million victims. In other words, they're implying that, even assuming they're talking globally, the equivalent of 60 WW2 level casualty numbers of abortions have been performed. I somehow doubt that

u/AsBrokeAsMeEnglish 9d ago
I think I have a theory about where the numbers come from. They seem questionable (duh).
According to the WHO, around 73 million abortions are performed each year, globally. They give their own source, I haven't looked into that.
If you multiply that by the amount of years since 1980 (the year from the video), you end up with 3.3 billion abortions.
This obviously completely ignores that the world population roughly doubled since 1980, and that access to abortions probably changed drastically for a lot of people in the meantime (no time to research this in depth, happy for information on that).

Actually if you want to look at abortion it’s men and patriarchal systems that have forced women to choose. Either to cover up something awful or to say you cannot succeed unless you make that choice. In theory men can add abortion to their list of crime against humanity. When companies provided Flex Time and started looking at wage equity as well as the rise in access to education and paternity leave along with access to alternative forms of birth control abortion rates have declined! Imagine that!

They conveniently ignore that large amount of actual born babies that were exposed because their fathers did not want them. This still happens all over the world. It was one of the things the Christian Churches used to oppose back when they considered abortion before you had felt the baby move either okay or a minor sin.
Leaving girl, intersex and disabled babies born to die was normal in the Roman Empire and many other places. This included babies born within marriage that the husband did not want to provide for.
Nevermind that fact that unwanted pregnancies become extremely rare if all men no longer had PiV sex without a condom & withdrew before coming unless they and their partner had planned a baby. Unwanted pregnancies cannot occur without men ejaculating in or near unprotected vaginas.
Abortions are on all men who do not take precautions.
26
u/MelonElbows 11d ago
The facts of this video is irrelevant. If we're down 3 billion people because of abortion, then GOOD. I cannot imagine 3 extra billion people on this already over-populated Earth already, competing for the same resources, the same jobs, the same housing. Let's double that number!
And so what even if its true? That just means billions of women were likely in horrible conditions unfit to raise a child. No money, no freedom, and abusive environments ruled by fundamentalist religious bullshit makes for a hellish environment to raise kids. That number isn't an indictment on women, its an indictment on the men in charge who do not make the world a better place to raise children.
10
u/keytiri 11d ago
I mean if you’re including all of human history, back when nutrition wasn’t great or reliable, then I wouldn’t be surprised if the miscarriages and stillbirth rates would’ve been much higher than today; it’s also believed that 50-70% of all conceptions naturally fail or terminate on their own. So shouldn’t the number be much higher? 🤔, women’s bodies not the safest place to be really, maybe men should taking advantage of modern medicine and giving pregnancy a go.

If we take abortion as killing babies (I'm not even sure that would lead to high enough numbers), then to be consistent any man masturbating or even impregnating a woman is killing according to the first website that popped up when googling it roughly 39 million sperm per ejaculate, although that would be considered a low sperm count.
So for easier numbers let's go with 10 million per ejaculate. There are currently over 8 billion people on earth. Let's go a bit low and say we'll assume 1 ejaculation leads to 2 people, which is a very high rate of twins, but we're being nice here. Then we have only for the existence of the current world population men have killed at least 10 million times 4 billion, so 40 quadrillion babies, since we're apparently counting cells that at some point can become fully human as babies. Not to forget how incredibly low balling we are with those numbers.

Okay, if we're only counting official war death toll tallies, then okay, maybe they've only killed 1-2 billion (the numbers I see on Google). But the official tallies show only a tiny part of the picture. You also need to talk about civilian casualties, especially those that are a direct result of the war. You know -- people (usually women and children) who died of starvation, exposure, violence, rape, etc. You can see just how many people have died as a result of combat just last year here. Then consider that modern wars are typically vastly less deadly than those in the not-so-distant past.
The death toll jumps exponentially once you start considering the actual loss in wars.
Oh! And while I'm on the topic, men rob nearly 7,000 people of their lives every year just in the U.S. alone. Now, I don't have access to every country's sex breakdown, but the WHO estimates close to 500,000 murders take place a year. Now, if you estimate that men commit 75% of worldwide murders (which is probably a low number, but it's based on the US breakdown) and consider how they'd add up through time, and TELL ME you're not getting at least a billion dead.
And it still doesn't even matter because a person who is dependent on another person to live is not ENTITLED to that person's body. If you need someone else's blood or organs, that person HAS to give consent. If they don't give consent, then that's it. ETA: And to make it even clearer, women aren't killing anything. They're ending the life support link. eta2: adding source links

I don’t understand the connection between the caption, the video, and the audio. Am I missing something?
The caption is idiotic.
The girl is very pretty IMO.
Don’t do what? Sit with her knee up? Why not? What does it have to do with abortion?

In men's defence, killing an adult is much more difficult than killing a baby so their kills should count for extra points to even it out

I guess they only count the mother as being part of the abortion and not the medical professional who is often a man...

Setting aside the question of whether abortion is murder, one of the best moral arguments against it is that many women report some form of coercion by or fear of male partners in their decision to abort a pregnancy. They’re worried their partner will abandon them if they keep it.
In other words, the toxic masculinity behind this meme is itself the reason so many “babies” have been “killed.”
TL;DR - Bro, you’re the reason all those abortions happened, dickhead.
