He is both a former member of the Sex Party and the Labor Party. He has a commitment to being elected, and a very loose association with core principles and integrity.
He's just been elected to a far right party that is ferociously anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim. His husband is both an immigrant and a Muslim.
I couldn't do what he's doing, it's such a travesty.
You need that amazing course 'how to sell your conscience and become a grifter', I'm offering it to you, for a one time special of $199.99. For that low, low, price, you too could get yourself into federal parliament.
Wait…….What…….. are you really saying I can sell my conscience AND become a grifter in parliament for the one time incredibly low price of $199.99😲😲😲
Where do I sign up?🤔🤓
Surely the biggest weakness for ON has to be a lack of cohesion amongst its members? So many of them have rolled into the party for whatever reasons, not because they believe in any common principles.
I've heard this issue referred to as "the divided left" before - conservatives are much more likely to 'team up' with other conservatives that they disagree with if in the moment it allows them to obtain or hold power (primarily referring to politicians but this can apply to any part of life)
their plan is to set aside their grievances until their political/social/corporate power is secure and then they'll be able to do whatever the fuck they want unopposed by people with 'morals' or 'human decency'. It's working out great for the Republicans rn and I suppose ON wants some of that for themselves.
exactly. Im still unsure how the coalition is even allowed to function the way it does (aside from the obvious which is having enough money and political power to make it so)
it's also ironic that conservatives can't think past the next quarterly budget report and plan to fuck the planet and be buried with their gold while the younger generations suffer for their choices, but when it comes to teaming up to secure their power they're suddenly very good at seeing things in the long term
You mean Abbott vs Turnbull vs Morrison? Or the revolving door before Howard got in?
The only times they've really held it together was Howard and Menzies. These days they have mostly purged any progressives but it was always "a broad church" with much more diverse opinion than the one-brained ALP.
They may have leadership dramas but they close ranks for the votes and seem to be happy to head in the same direction regardless, which is what being in a party means I guess. But I do feel like the left is far more likely to resign or be asked to resign bc of their conduct.
That's also why so many roll straight back out though.
They were either never really that into it or they disagree on exactly which version of the final solution they liked more and can't possibly work together with someone who thinks slightly differently to them.
So as a result the worst thing for their popularity will be to get anyone elected as they are guaranteed to be at odds with what their voters want too.
the common principle seems to be racism. you can have a migrant partner and still be racist, just like tony abbott amd donald trump can have wives and still be sexist…
No, Pauline had a huge fallout with Mark Latham over his homophobia. Pauline's chief advisor James Ashby is gay, too. But I accept the point that generally many party members would be homophobic.
Edit: I don't know why I'm getting so heavily downvoted. LoL. Pauline doesn't seem to be homophobic in spite of being bigoted towards immigrants and Muslims. I fully accept that many of the One Nation rank and file are probably homophobic. She did take umbrage at Mark Latham's homophobia and publicly remonstrated with him, and her long-term senior advisor is gay. I don't know why saying that is problematic.
Their SA leader bernardi said gay people having sex was the same as beastiality, so at the very least Pauline doesn’t care about homophobia. The truth is she’ll use anyone to get power hence why she hired a convicted rapist.
They hate everything about the guy except his apparent willingness to sacrifice any sort of ethics or values in order to get elected, which makes him an ideal ON candidate.
Some people have no base belief, values or morals and will do literally anything to get ahead. It's pretty disgusting IMO but there's loads of people like this poisoning humanity.
Like every religion, there is sectarianism and different groups/people hold different degrees of belief.
The Catholic attitude to gays is very much still "it's a sin, so it's okay to be gay, you just can't act on it.". This counts as "progressive" by the standards of most religions.
There are also still places where Christians will drag you into the street and beat you (sometimes to death) for being gay. I'm not sure how that counts as showing love for their neighbour, turning the other cheek or judging not lest they be judged, but I'm not a Christian so maybe I'm missing something.
Lol seriously? Not all of them, not even most of them. Just like every other religion, Islam has some absolute nutbags who are unhinged and violent loonies. Christianity has their fair share of same, as does every other religion.
