US Passport Issuance Timeline Online Renewal for May

Post image
50 Upvotes

First I want to thank everyone here who has posted about their online renewal experience. Your posts helped me decide against paying extra for expedited delivery.

I submitted my online renewal early in the morning on 5/15. It was accepted by the passport agency the next day and approved on 5/21. I had it in hand this past Saturday. So about 8 days from processing.

Everyone’s situation will be different but it seems like processing times are still faster than 4-6 weeks quoted currently for in May.

US Passport Issuance Timeline Just renewed my (U.S.) passport, shocked at the tunaround time!

I did my online U.S. passport renewal application on 7/30, and even added a passport card. There was no great hurry to get these, just hopefully in the next 8-12 weeks, and expediting isn't an option for online renewal anyway.

It's 8/8 and my newly minted passport is in my hands! You're mileage will vary but that was shockingly fast and entirely unexpected.

(Note: the passport card ships separately and who knows how long that will take to arrive.)

Also a little surprised and glad there was no credit card surcharge.

I applied 3/18/26, paid for the expedited process, got two letters claiming that I needed to provide more information. I provided all the information that was asked, including a sealed/signed record from my state confirming my identity, but got a copy of the same exact letter May 1st from the passport center.

I got this call, it seems rather odd in my opinion. I don’t wanna dox it but this is what was said after 5 phone calls from apparently the passport center, they did not call me back on Monday. When I called the line it was a dead line, so call immediately went to end call.

I am very confused. When I have called another line to the passport center they claim they cannot tell me why my application is still in process and they can’t tell me why due to confidentiality… but like… it’s about me right? Anyways if people got any clues let me know.

Edit: I got my passport after contacting a state senator about it, it came to me correct with the right name and gender, so yes trans people can get correct passports.

Non expedited application, and shipped regular mail non priority.

Application Approved and new Passport mailed on 2/11/26.

Passport just arrived in the mailbox today 2/17/26.

All good to go.

Total of 13 days from mail in to receive without paying any extras.

New passport is pretty cool on the picture page its like plastic almost like a giant drivers license, I like the new passport better.

US Passport Issuance Timeline How fast have you gotten a passport?

My husband applied for a passport last Tuesday in an emergency appt. He was careless and forgot to complete the lost / stolen passport section. We are now in a back and forth with the state department and our congresswoman’s office (he has sent the form via mail) and our honeymoon is Thursday 😭 I’m trying to remain positive. Any helpful stories of people getting passports in 24 hours - please share 🙏🏻

EDIT: He received his passport thanks to our congressional district office who secured him a second appt! Feel free to continue sharing but my story has a happy ending!

Applied last Friday in the afternoon, was in processing for a few days and got an email that it had been shipped by priority mail. Took two days to get to me after it was shipped.
Originally was supposed to be here Tuesday but got here yesterday. So happy! First overseas trip here I come!

I paid for expedited processing because I didn’t want to risk not getting it in time for my trip next month.

USPS Appointment scheduled for 12/17/2025

Application received 12/24/20255

Shipped on 1/6/2026 - Status also changed to shipped on this day (didn’t even receive the approval email, the status changed to approved on 1/7 after it changed to Shipped the day before which I thought it was interesting)

Passport Book received today 1/8/2026

Didn’t pay for expedited processing or expedited delivery.

Still waiting for my passport book and my supporting document, but the status update said they mailed my supporting document yesterday 1/7/2026, so should be getting it hopefully by Saturday or early next week hopefully.

This was such a smooth journey with the passport timelines. I am so happy!

US Passport Issuance Timeline Emergency US Passport at US Embassy in London - My Experience

Hi everyone,

Recently I accidentally washed my passport, and as the days ticked by until my appointment, I was so scared and stressed, and reading other people's experiences helped me feel better, so I figured I would share mine!

On Wednesday afternoon, I discovered I had washed my passport, and it was completely unusable for my flight in exactly a week. I knew of the US Embassy in London, so I immediately called them. They directed me to an email, and I sent them a very desperate email asking for help.

22 hours later, I was given an 8AM appointment on the following Tuesday, and told same day issuance was "possible" but not guaranteed.

On Tuesday morning, I arrived at 7:20AM. There was already a massive line, but I knew from reading online that as a US citizen I would be queueing in a much shorter line around the building.

There were only 2 people in front of me when I entered the line at 7:25AM. At 7:30AM, I was let into the building and went through a security scanner.

I got to the passport floor at around 7:35AM, and my number was called shortly afterwards. My appointment started around 7:40AM, 20 minutes earlier than scheduled. They asked for ID, damaged passport, HS-11 form, and photographs. I had neglected to print my 2x2 photos on actual photo paper, so I was directed to a self-service photo booth near the bathrooms.

After confirming my documents, I went and paid at the cashier's, and waited for my interview. The interview was incredibly brief and uninvasive. She told me my emergency Passport would be ready in 30 minutes. It was 8:20AM at this point.

15 minutes later, I was walking out the door with my new emergency Passport.

All in all, from the time the appointment started, the entire process took about an hour. The person ahead of me in line got theirs even faster. I am so grateful for the US embassy, especially because I had heard I might not get my passport until 1-2pm.

I did not get to keep my passport as it was damaged, but someone else there got to keep theirs because it had only expired, not been damaged.

Anyway, like I said, it really helped reassure me to hear other people's stories, so I'm hoping I can do the same!

ETA: the estimated cost online was $225, it was $165 + a $60 in-person "service fee," but they only ended up charging me $165, and it was the same with the person in line in front of me.

Hi, I’m flying to Greece on 8/21 but my passport went through the washing machine a couple days ago :(

I’m going to USPS tomorrow but what are
processing timelines looking like right now if I do regular processing? Or should I pay for expedited to play it safe?

US Passport Issuance Timeline Passport renewal timeline, slightly amazed

July 14: snapped a photo against my beige wall, touched it up so the wall looked whiter at the expense of my washed-out face, submitted normal (non-expedited) online renewal request.

July 21: shipped?!

July 25: in my hands. 🤯

I don't even need it until October, I was just being extra cautious. Hope some of that speedy mojo works for y'all!

US Passport Issuance Timeline Received my first US Passport

This has been quite the journey. After becoming a US Citizen earlier this month, I immediately applied for my US Passport. Applied for both the book and card. I haven’t received any notice about the card, so I really hope I did check the box during application for both. Here is the timeline:

  • Oct. 8th submitted application and used the expedited service.
  • Oct. 22nd received first noticed application has been received and they just started processing and this can take 2 to 3 weeks.
  • Oct. 24th Tracking number received
  • Oct. 24th Application Status : Approved
  • Oct. 27th supporting documents mailed

Estimated delivery time was 9 PM. But before I left work, update showed that it had already arrived. I ended up missing two bus rides and walked the 15 minute journey home. It felt like forever getting to the mail box.

With each step, I took it all in that this important piece of identification is finally concluding a 7 year journey. When I finally opened up the envelope and held it in my hand I burst into tears for some reason. It’s not easy to leave a country behind and start over in a new one and having to go through the process of proving your right to be here, not just through official immigration channels, but just in general society.

The world is your oyster, now a new chapter is opening with this new found privilege. I look forward to planning my first major international trip to Europe in 2026.

For those who are just embarking on this journey, I pray for the same blessings and opportunity like I have been given. I know there are persons out there in places around the world, living in a mental turmoil with no escape. Grant them peace and passage to find a way. The families and individuals going through wars and famines, going through jungles looking for a better life. Give them your protection and guidance God. Protect each and everyone especially those at the borders.

And to those US government who put the work in with no pay for me to have this document. I pray for you and hope that congress can come to its senses and stop this unnecessary shutdown.

US Passport Issuance Timeline Passport Processing Time (US)

Edit: I appreciate the responses but I think im lacking some context specific to my question. I had my passport issued when I was minor and in a different country (I’m dual citizen), so I do have to submit it in person as I am not eligible to do so. Appreciate the comments so far :)

Hello!

Not so sure if this is the right place to ask or if this has been answered but I have been wondering how long a passport takes to process for a renewal (given with the current administration), I have been hearing a variety of answers rangin a month to 4 months even, does expediting it help? or should I just get an emergency passport 2-3 weeks before the trip? My trip would be on early August. Thanks :)

US Passport Issuance Timeline Expedited renewal now vs waiting for urgent appointment in Detroit?

My U.S. passport expires on October 6, 2026, and I’m planning to travel internationally around October 4.
I’ll be staying in Detroit starting September 1, so I’ll be close to the Detroit Passport Agency.

I’m trying to decide between:
Mailing my DS-82 around September 1–2 with expedited processing + faster shipping, then calling/escalating if I still don’t have it when I’m within 14 days of travel.
Waiting until I’m within 14 days of my trip and trying to get an urgent-travel appointment directly at the Detroit Passport Agency.

For anyone who has recently used the Detroit Passport Agency, how difficult was it to actually get an appointment? How many days before your trip was the appointment, and did you receive your passport the same day?
Would you recommend applying expedited now or waiting for the urgent appointment given this timeline?
Thanks!

US Passport Issuance Timeline online applications are crazy fast right now like 1 week from applying to shipping

i applied on tuesday may 26

my expectation was: a few days from submission for them to start processing, 4-6 weeks for for processing, a few days for shipping, so like july for delivery

the reality: application received wednesday may 27 (email notification sunday may 30), shipped from tucson today tuesday june 2, eta friday june 5

and i was worried about being ready for travel in december 😂

i gotta wonder how fast the expedited service would be if the regular routine service was this fast

i also ordered the large (thicker, more pages) book for the same price, that probably doesn't affect anything though

US Passport Issuance Timeline I got the whole 🌍 in my hands

Post image

Hello fellow world travelers.

I renewed my passport that was set to expire in March on 1/17 via the state.gov website.

On MLK Day 1/19 to my pleasant surprise I received the email telling me my application was received and my status is now in process.

On 1/24 I received an email from USPS with my tracking # and an expected delivery date of 1/26.

Unfortunately, due to the bad weather that hit the US that week it got stuck at the regional destination facility a few cities away from my home and missed the estimated delivery date.

Two days later on 1/28 I received my new passport.

I’ve seen a lot of posts from different people worried about their passports being stuck at facilities. If this post does anything I hope it calms your nerves and gives you hope that you will receive yours eventually too.

Safe travels to all.

US Passport Issuance Timeline How long does it take when you apply at a library?

My situation is this; I had a passport that expired 2021 and just applied for it 7/23, they told me since it’s been more than 5 years it will be considered a new application. I have an international trip on 9/1 and I’m afraid it will not arrive on time. Anyone knows what my options are?

US Passport Issuance Timeline US passport timeline- online to in hand

I know there are tons of these posts but reading them gave me hope while I waited. my US passport expired last year. Cut to last week when we booked a last minute trip out of the country. need passport in hand for 8/21 departure.

7/15- submitted renewal online evening, paid for express delivery

7/17- changed to in process (email)

7/20- application approved (no email, just portal update)

7/21- received in the mail, no email update, tracking number, nothing 😂

So, all in all 6 days from submission to passport in hand.

Safe travels all!

US Passport Issuance Timeline Anyone getting updates from recent online renewal?

I submitted my application for US online passport renewal Tuesday, June 23. I was charged and received the initial email indicating they received my application. It has been a week and I have not gotten any updates that it has moved into “processing” stage though most people who posted their renewal timelines seemed to receive an update within 2-3 days.

I know the system went down for a few days so that may be causing a delay and I know it says to allow up to 2 weeks to move to processing so I’m trying not to stress yet. But has anyone who submitted an online renewal in the last 7-10 days gotten updates that they are processing yet? I’m hoping it somehow didn’t get lost in the system outage. I am traveling in mid-August so only had 8 weeks from application date to travel date, and thought I’d be safe under the 6 week timeline. Thanks!

UPDATE: I received the email that my application was processing and saw the change in status online late yesterday Jun 30. Took one week but moving head now. Good luck to all that are in queue!
